To The Men Who Continue To Be Great Role Models An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring those they come in contact with to help them grow in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle, a brother or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us when we don't necessarily see it ourselves, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us by their story and perseverance, we can recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. Looking back, we are all probably able to attribute a bit of ourselves and our success stories partly to those above in our lives. This month we are honoring all the men and their contributions to the betterment of Gallatin, our neighbors and our community. We are highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud and thank you. The lasting impact has a ripple effect that ensures us that it is worth it, even when we cannot see it. As we move into the summer months, take the time to recognize the men in your life and around our community who have made a difference and strive to do the same for others; there's no better reward.

CAN YOU POINT TO A MOMENT WHEN YOU KNEW THAT YOU WANTED TO GET INTO MEDICINE? I come from a family of doctors but I didn’t want to go into medicine. My grandfather was in a severe house fire so I spent several weeks with him after my first semester in college in a burn ICU and saw the impact physicians can have on people. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSION, WHAT WOULD IT BE AND WHY? A long-haul truck driver, being out on the road, listening to music, podcasts and getting lost in my thoughts. America is such a beautiful country and nothing is more meditative than a long drive.

WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN A PROPER WORK-LIFE BALANCE AND HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT OR DECOMPRESS? I have five kids so the drive to and from work allows me to put on and take off the physician hat so when I’m home, I’m dad and that’s the most important thing. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU’VE LEARNED RECENTLY THAT’S TOTALLY SURPRISED YOU? How hard it is to start a small business. I’ve done fairly difficult things in life, but hands down, starting my own business is by far the most difficult thing. WHAT’S ONE FUN FACT THAT NO ONE KNOWS OR WOULD BELIEVE ABOUT YOU? I have been ground shocked by lightning about a half a dozen times. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHARITIES OR ORGANIZATIONS THAT YOU SUPPORT OR WORK CLOSELY WITH? The Miracle League in Gallatin that we are sponsors of, as well as the Parks and Recreation Department in Sumner County. WHEN AND HOW DID YOU BEGIN WORKING IN DIGITAL FORENSICS AND CYBER SECURITY? When I was deployed in Iraq in 2003 - 2004. We were kicking in doors, performing door to door raids, catching bad guys, and during the process, we would find cell phones and computers and take them for forensics. I knew this would eventually come to the consumer market. Then, throughout law school, I continued to learn and developed my first digital forensics firm. HOW DID YOUR MILITARY CAREER PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR CURRENT PROFESSION? My time in the US Army gave me the ability to “stay the course” regardless of how hard it gets and in the way that I am prepared, relentless, and willing to go the extra mile. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO OTHER PASSIONS YOU HAVE IN LIFE? I believe work is life and life is a work in progress. I love what I do which drives my passion and cybersecurity and digital forensics have become my way of life. WHAT’S ONE FUN FACT THAT NO ONE KNOWS OR WOULD BELIEVE ABOUT YOU? I listen to Smooth Operator by Sade to get hyped up when I am working out or about to give a speech. WHAT’S ONE PIECE OF ADVICE OR MANTRA YOU TRY TO LIVE BY? Fortitude, will and grit: these are the fundamentals that will carry you throughout life. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHARITIES OR ORGANIZATIONS THAT YOU SUPPORT OR WORK CLOSELY WITH? I have a laundry list: The USO, Fulton Films, Packt Cyber security, over 100 various podcasts and I’m a contributor for TickerNEWs–one of the world’s biggest news outlets/media platforms as a cyber security expert.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH THE SUMNER COUNTY MUSEUM? I thought I wanted to teach history in grade school. I ended up with a degree in Sports and Tourism. It just so happened that when I graduated from MTSU that the museum was hiring a director. The rest is well, history. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO OTHER PASSIONS YOU HAVE IN LIFE? I like to travel and explore other small towns in the south and check out their downtown squares and other historic sites. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? I love to hunt, fish, camp and just about anything on the water or outdoors. I also love going to concerts and music and art festivals with my wife, Kim. I have really enjoyed coaching both of my children in soccer and my son in basketball.

WHAT CHARITIES OR OTHER ORGANIZATIONS DO YOU WORK CLOSELY WITH? Most of the historic sites in Sumner County, the Gallatin Chamber of Commerce and Sumner County Tourism. WHAT’S ONE THING THAT NO ONE WOULD BELIEVE ABOUT YOU? I am a pretty good rapper. Anything 90’s or early 2000’s is my jam. WHAT’S SOMETHING INTERESTING YOU’VE LEARNED RECENTLY THAT SURPRISED YOU? I recently learned that all the golf tees that go in the triangle game at Cracker Barrel are made right here in Gallatin. TELL US A FUN FACT OR STORY ABOUT YOURSELF. This June will mark the 10th year that I have attended Bonnaroo. For a week, Manchester becomes the 5th largest city in Tennessee.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED WITH YOUNG LIFE? I had a Young Life leader show up in my life when I was in high school. In college, I began volunteering as a leader to high school students because I wanted to help students the way Young Life had helped me. DID YOU ALWAYS KNOW YOU WOULD BE WORKING IN THIS FIELD? I was a business major in college and always thought I would be in sales. HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN WORK-LIFE BALANCE? One perk of my job is that I make my own schedule, but it’s also one of the burdens. I’ve had to learn to plan downtime with my family on a weekly basis. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? College football is my favorite thing. My other hobbies are golf, Crossfit and snowboarding. WHAT’S A PIECE OF ADVICE OR A MANTRA YOU LIVE BY? Celebrate the temporary. WHAT’S ON THE HORIZON FOR YOUNG LIFE IN GALLATIN? Young Life at Gallatin High School is starting in August. Our hope is that Young Life becomes part of the fabric of the school and the community for years to come.

Imagine waking up on a Saturday morning, rounding up family and friends and heading to the local marina to hop on a boat for a full day of fun and sun on the water. You arrive to find your reserved pontoon, tritoon, deck boat, or wakeboard boat in the water, uncovered, gassed up, and ready to go as soon as you step on. Once you board, you stow your belongings and begin to distribute the snacks and drinks you’ve preordered for your friends and family. You cast off the ropes from the boats’ cleats, and you head to open waters seeking fun and memories to last a lifetime. Your hardest decisions now are who’s up first on the tube and in which cove are we dropping anchor for that first afternoon dip. As if that’s not enticing enough, you know when your day of family fun is over and you return to the marina, you’ll simply pull in, walk off and drive home. Cleaning, wiping down, securing, trailering, dry storage headaches, long ramp lines, maintenance issues and upkeep are no longer your responsibility. As the old saying goes, the two best days of a boat owner’s life are the day they buy a boat and the day they sell it! The time in between is peppered with headaches, financial stresses, transportation and maintenance issues, and a litany of other hassles that take so much joy out of the intended boating experience that people buy a boat for in the first place. Chad Matthews, owner of Cherokee Boat Club, knew there had to be a better way for a family or individual to enjoy time on the lake without all of the hoops and hindrances associated with boat ownership. While attending Auburn University, Chad entered his idea and concept into The Tiger Cage--Auburn’s version of Shark Tank. After finishing fourth in the competition, it became apparent to Chad that the idea of a boat club was a viable plan, had value and he was determined to make it a reality. “Unfortunately, the lakes of Alabama are roughly an hour and a half to two hours away from major cities. My search transitioned north to Nashville and I began going to every marina on Percy Priest and Old Hickory,” recalls Chad as he searched for the most suitable location. He was in luck. Perfectly centered between two of Tennessee’s fastest-growing counties (Sumner and Wilson), Chad found the perfect spot on Old Hickory Lake at Cherokee Marina. But, it wasn’t smooth sailing just yet. Chad moved to Nashville three days after the March 2020 tornado only to arrive with no power. With an opening date of March 15, 2020, he had to use a generator to power his computer and start the business. Opening weekend was cold with much interest from individuals and families but he wasn’t out of the woods yet. A national quarantine was set in place the very next day. “We held strong knowing that families would seek out ways to get out of the house and continue to enjoy their lives,” Chad expressed. Today, Cherokee Boat Club provides a unique experience to boating and as people continue to find ways to be outdoors and around family and friends, the boat club has seen unprecedented growth.

Unlike other boat clubs in the Nashville area, Cherokee Boat Club is the only independent club and provides more flexibility, options, and offers the most enjoyable boating experience in the area. Walk into any humidor and you’ll immediately be met by sweet aromas, rekindled nostalgia and a bit of enticement. However, if you’re not sure how to select a great cigar or know what you’re looking for, it may be a bit of an overwhelming moment, as well. Smokers Abbey, Gallatin’s full-service cigar lounge, shares with us how to select the perfect smoke and gives four recommendations for the everyday cigar aficionado and novice alike. “Look for proper humidification; cigars should be kept around 68-72% humidity. Sweet cigars are also an option when choosing a great cigar,” explains Josh. Josh also points out that there are a few other factors to consider when selecting a cigar and the associated experience you’ll enjoy from it. Things like medium or full body, dark, light or sweet, shape, size and how much time you’d like to spend with that cigar all factor into the unique experience you will have from a specific cigar. A few recommendations from Smokers Abbey: • Crowned Heads Court Serie E - full bodied Nicaraguan cigar with an Ecuadorian Habano-Oscuro wrapper with a dynamic blend of spice, pepper and earthy rich, sweet notes. • Roma Craft Aquitaine - medium bodied Nicaraguan cigar with an Ecuadorian wrapper, with natural tobacco tastes and notes of coffee and caramel, and a woody/cedar taste as the cigar progresses. • Aganorsa Leaf Connecticut - light-medium body Nicaraguan cigar with an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. This is a creamy tasting cigar with some spice and pepper and notes of earthiness and chocolate. • Deadwood Leather Rose by Drew Estate - an infused cigar with a Maduro wrapper with a sugar cane cap, boasting flavors of vanilla, cream and chocolate syrup along with notes of cedar and sweetened black coffee. Much like wine, bourbon and other fine spirit tasting, there is no right or wrong way to describe a like or dislike about a specific cigar. Multiple notes, flavors and tastes meld together to create an individualized experience. Even that experience may have different variations and changes throughout the entirety and enjoyment of a specific cigar. What matters is what you enjoy and your experience. While identifying the type of cigar to enjoy is a matter of trial, error, identification and repetition, likewise so is identifying which settings and surroundings add to your enjoyment. For some, it may be a back porch, paired with your favorite Tennessee Whiskey. For others, it may be while watching a classic movie or new release. And, for others, it may be with conversation and interacting with others in your local cigar lounge, like Smokers Abbey. This rocket uses the power of compressed air to launch. (Budding engineers take note: this is called pneumatics!)

MATERIALS NEEDED: One empty juice pouch, one flexible straw (comes with the pouch), one standard straw, colored cardstock and modeling clay

Snip off end of flexible straw. Insert pointed end of straw into the straw hole of juice pouch. Cut second straw in half. This will be your rocket.

Make three trapezoids from cardstock in the following dimensions: 3-inches (base), x 1-inch (height) x ¾-inches (top). Set two aside to be full fins. Cut last one in half vertically. Tape full fins on sides of straw. Don’t flatten. Tape one half-fin perpendicularly to each full fin. Roll small bit of clay into ball and add to top to seal straw completely. To launch the rocket, inflate pouch by blowing into the flexible straw. Bend flexible straw to aim and place the rocket straw over the end. Stomp hard for liftoff!
