ADVENTURE CANINE TRAINING
Whether it’s nature adventures, public events, or simple walks around the neighborhood, many dog owners don’t realize that teaching obedience behaviors is only a small portion of what goes into training a dog for the real world. Relationship and Play make up the foundation of our training program. Our primary goal is to help owners understand their dog’s biological needs and genetic tendencies and to educate them on how to motivate and mold each individual dog into the best versions of themselves.
Our board and train program comes with additional private sessions and access to our monthly group training and Pack Walks. It’s about educating the owners once the dogs have a solid foundation. On top of learning, the dogs get to explore woods and creeks every day! They all have an absolute blast with us.

Beginnings Start from the
Inside Out at the Fitzgerald Manor
GALLATIN COUPLE AND THEIR CALLING TO CULTIVATE AND EMPOWER LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES.
For Jeff and Heather Brigstock, breathing new life into the historic Gallatin Fitzgerald Manor was no small task. However, their impact of breathing life into existing small businesses in Gallatin has proven to be even more rewarding. Built in the late 1860s by an Irish immigrant, Henry Fitzgerald, who settled in Gallatin, the Fitzgerald Manor still stands at the corner of South Water Avenue and Factory Street. Unique and ornate 19th century period pieces still set this home apart, such as award-winning intricate wood designs, bricks made on-site to erect the home, and the original spiral staircase that leads to the third floor watchtower, or "belvedere" lookout. It's even believed that the Fitzgerald Manor was the first home in Sumner County to have indoor plumbing. In the 160-year history of the home, the Brigstocks became only the fourth owners of the manor. They bought it with a vision not only to breathe new life into a building but to connect people and small businesses in Gallatin. Here, Inside Out Markets serves as an incubator CONTINUED >

marketplace for those businesses to grow and eventually set out on their own. While the Brigstocks officially opened Inside Out Markets at the Fitzgerald Manor in 2020, the story for them started five years earlier. "In 2015, we began selling Wayfair furniture in an old tobacco warehouse here in Gallatin. We've always believed that everyone should be able to have a beautiful home without having to mortgage the farm," Heather reminisces. In 2018, after volume increased and their concept gained even more traction, they quickly realized they needed more space and purchased what Heather affectionately describes as, "the ugliest self-storage building in Hendersonville!" It was there that they saw even more demand and gained more attention for their model of bringing quality products at affordable prices to the local public. They continued to partner with local artisans and area small businesses to become a hub for local products and items. In 2020, they quickly realized they were in need of more space and set out to find the perfect, permanent home for what would become Inside Out Markets. After a beautiful remodel of the Fitzgerald Manor, Inside Out Markets officially opened its doors in October 2020 and has continued to flourish while helping other small businesses grow. "Partnering with local artisans and helping them develop their products, taking them and creating a plan to grow their business as we grow ours is also a critical part of what we do," says Heather. In addition to featuring over 45 local businesses, makers and artisans, and hundreds of local products, Inside Out Markets also boasts a coffee shop (The Klatch) and a bakery/cafe (MaryElla’s, which has the best sourdough around!). "Creating a space where people can do life together, celebrate milestones, and have a community touchpoint has always been an important aspect of what we do," says Heather. For some, growing a business internally is a measure of success. For the Brigstocks, seeing local products and vendors they work with become successful and eventually venturing out on their own, is how success is defined--a truly unique measure from the inside out.

ONCE THREATENED BY PROGRESS, THIS ICONIC GALLATIN HOME NOW ANCHORS AN ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD. When locals Josh and Jennifer Peyton bought the 10,000 sqft home in the Carellton neighborhood in 2019, they had big expectations and an even bigger desire to restore the home to its deserved glory of years before. The house that locals knew as "The Carellton Mansion" and "The Big House on the Hill" carries quite the history and local lore itself. The estate home, originally 1826 Long Hollow Pike, was built in 1993 by one of Tennessee's most influential businessmen and restauranteurs of his time, David Watchel, Jr. The stately home was fit for
a restaurant king, who at the time, had a hand in founding, ownership or management in many local and national eateries and chains, including O'Charleys, Shoney's, Logan's Roadhouse, Uncle Bud's, Santa Fe Cattle Company and Western Sizzlin. After Watchel's death in 2001, the home changed hands a few times throughout the years and eventually sat vacant while becoming part of a 400+ acre new residential development that later became the Carellton neighborhood. Developers initially had plans of tearing down the home that, while an

impressive estate, did not fit the aesthetics of the new development. Eventually, the developers decided to not only incorporate the home into the neighborhood but to make it an anchor and the rightful showpiece of the neighborhood that it should always have been. New streets and homes surrounding the once rolling hills and farmland began to encircle the property as the stately home watched on. Progress traveled along the Long Hollow countryside and soon hundreds of homes overtook the surrounding acreage. By this time, the Peytons who were living in Nashville were waiting for their opportunity. It was in 2019 that they received their chance after the developer finally listed the house for sale and a longtime friend called them the first day it was available to tell them about it. They went to see the home and it didn't take long to make a decision.
"We fell in love as we walked in the front door," remembers Jennifer. Shortly after that, they bought the home and moved into the big house on the hill in August of 2019. Immediately, Josh and Jennifer went to work restoring the Carellton Mansion and making it their own. Almost everything was replaced and made new: AC units, plumbing, sewer, windows, doors, fixtures, trim, paint and handles. Walls were taken down, bathrooms, playrooms and bedrooms were updated and a sunroom and rear patio were updated and added. Josh's favorite part of the home is the newly built, full bar on display on the main level, which has become the center for entertaining guests. Perhaps the biggest undertaking was creating an entirely separate home on the bottom level for Jennifer's parents, who moved into the home with them. There were many reasons for the move but it would actually mean spending the final two years with Jennifer's dad in the home, before he passed away unexpectedly in August 2021. "It was so important for us to ensure that they had everything to feel like a house and not an in-law suite," says Jennifer. Once completed, the downstairs space had a beautiful, traditional feel with 2,500 sqft of separate living space--truly a home within a home. While the Peytons continue to have ongoing projects within the home, having the majority of work completed means more time focusing on their three young children, the many civic groups and organizations they are a part of around the community and their Gallatin businesses that also allow them to give back to, and be a part of, the local community. In 2021, Josh and Jennifer opened Fitness 1440 Gallatin, a full-service fitness center on Goodview Way in GreenLea Commons, and in the summer of 2022, they will open Crown and Iris, a family lifestyle boutique that will be in the new Newman’s Crossing development (Long Hollow & Big Station Camp). They are also the owners of Covenant Building Services and continue to find ways to give back to this community they love. When asked how taking the leap and making such a large house their forever home impacted their lives, Jennifer sums it up quite succinctly, saying, "we will forever be grateful for the memories this home has already given us and we look forward to the years ahead as we continue to grow in this home and community!" A Sit Down with Mayor Paige Brown
Get to know Gallatin's 62nd mayor and why grace and gratitude are so important. ARTICLE BY NICOLE BELL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PLUM POPPY PHOTOGRAPHY
24
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE
Dating back over nine generations, Mayor Paige Brown's roots and family stories run deep in Gallatin. As she is currently serving her second term as Gallatin's mayor, Mayor Brown sits down with us to share a bit about herself, her favorite things about our city and what she's most excited for in the future. TELL US YOUR BACKGROUND AND STORY OF HOW YOU/YOUR FAMILY CAME TO GALLATIN. MAYOR: My ancestors actually came to Sumner County around 1800 and have been here ever since. I was raised in Gallatin, moved away, and returned. My past careers have been in television and non-profit management (Gallatin Area Chamber of Commerce), but I always had simultaneous projects/jobs/work in other areas, which has created a fun work history. HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN CITY GOVERNMENT? MAYOR: As I was immersed in the community in my chamber career, I realized the impact, both negative and positive, that local government has on quality of life, opportunity, success and prosperity. I submitted myself to serve on boards and committees and volunteered in various capacities, which mushroomed into even more chances to learn and engage. After years of consideration, education, exposure and engagement in the community, I ran for Mayor in 2014. I have had the honor of serving this amazing city since 2015. WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING MAYOR HERE IN GALLATIN? MAYOR: Helping people solve problems, realize their dreams and find opportunities. One of the most fun things I get to do is speak with kids! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT GALLATIN? MAYOR: Geographically, it’s our older areas. While the new ones are so nice and enticing, the old parts of Gallatin feel like home for me. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE LOCAL SPOTS IN GALLATIN? MAYOR: I LOVE the lake, our downtown and so many of our local restaurants.
WHAT'S THE ONE THING YOU WISH PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT GALLATIN? MAYOR: How rich it is – in history, beauty, opportunity, character and kindness. WHAT'S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACING GALLATIN RIGHT NOW? MAYOR: Absolutely, it is our growth. People are fleeing from other states that don’t offer the quality of life they want and they’re migrating to just a few states and putting a large burden on the Middle Tennessee area. The city is managing and planning well, but some citizens believe that we should stop the growth, which would have quite a detrimental impact. I joke that everyone wants to be the last one in and shut the door behind them. The change is so hard, especially for those of us who nostalgically remember, but we actually have much that is better because of the growth. I focus on the good and look forward to a slow down. WHAT'S A FUN FACT ABOUT GALLATIN THAT YOU CAN TELL US? MAYOR: Recently, artists Mickey Guyton (who sang the National Anthem at this year’s Super Bowl), Tenille Towns, Sam Hunt, Chris Young and Kane Brown have all featured Gallatin in their music videos WHAT'S THE ONE THING YOU WANT NEWCOMERS TO GALLATIN TO KNOW ABOUT OUR CITY? MAYOR: That we welcome you, hope you love Gallatin, welcome your engagement and investment in our city, but we don’t want you to want to change us to the place from which you come (said with a smile). READER'S DIGEST NAMED GALLATIN THE, "NICEST PLACE IN AMERICA." WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU AND WHY IS THAT DISTINCTION SO FITTING FOR GALLATIN? Mayor: While it is fitting for Gallatin, it is also a challenge. Our personality is a part of our livability, our texture and a core component of what makes us attractive for investments that translate into good jobs so it’s so important that we retain that character that is the essence of Gallatin. Big Trouble finds Gallatin
Brewery bucks the trends and embraces nostalgia. ARTICLE BY SCOT T BE LL | PHOTOG R APHY PROVIDE D

Away from the neon lights and Broadway glam of downtown Nashville and away from the seemingly hundreds of breweries that continue to line the streets in every large city around us, Gallatin's own brewery has emerged as a local fan favorite that offers a unique twist on what a brewery in Tennessee is supposed to be. Big Trouble Brewing Company is the pride of owner Josiah Trandahl, a United States Marine veteran who has served since 2011 and was deployed to Afghanistan from 2018 to 2019. Josiah began brewing beer as a college kid out of necessity but always dreamt of opening his own brewery. While in Afghanistan and experiencing close, personal tragedies, Josiah made a decision that he would not wait any longer in pursuing his dream of owning a brewery and opening it to the public. When Josiah arrived home in 2019, he immediately went to work to find a suitable location and to assemble a team. Once a building was acquired, the official plan was put into motion and Josiah began a major overhaul of the building. Having to navigate several challenges, delays and frustrations due to the pandemic during 2020 and 2021, Josiah and his team finally opened the doors to the public in August 2021. Big Trouble Brewing Company boasts a unique, laid back and retro feel that is welcoming and a bit nostalgic. Josiah is an admitted super-fan of everything '80s and has made his space a place for others to enjoy time with friends and family. "We try to keep the vibe light, clean, and very retro. We are all fans of the 80's cinema, music, and pop culture, and a visit to the brewery will show this by a look around at the bar, posters, and memorabilia scattered throughout the space," raves Josiah. BTBC has a large indoor seating area, and when warmer weather hits, a small outdoor seating area, as well. But, they're not just a beer room as they try to ensure there is something for everyone. The unique, craft brews are a given, but BTBC even has a house-madecraft seltzer which customers can mix with up to a dozen flavors to create their own combinations (Mango-Coconut, anyone?). You won't see the normal "bar scene" and Josiah has been very intentional about this. What you will see is a family-friendly atmosphere with plenty of options, games and events that are held throughout the week for all to enjoy. Bingo on Wednesdays, trivia on Thursdays and a rotating schedule of comedy, music, and spoken word fill the calendar. They even serve up fancy hotdogs, pulled pork tacos and barbecue nachos on their food menu when the beer itself needs a chaser. Big Trouble Brewing Company brews its own beer and is classified as a 7BBL craft brewery, which means it can brew up to seven barrels of beer at a time (around 220 gallons). Seasonal brews and rotating selections make their way from the on-site brewing kettles to kegs and taps and finally into a pint glass in your hand (a rather neat life cycle all under one Gallatin roof). With all the offerings that BTBC boasts, it may simply be the eccentric and amazingly unique 80's themed items, details and decor that keeps regulars coming back and continues to bring in newcomers who want to experience the vibe for themselves. When asked about it, Josiah doesn't mince words. "We have a retro 80's theme because it is awesome," he says with a grin. And, after experiencing it firsthand, we couldn't agree more.
Local muralist, Bryan Deese created this custom mural for BTBC.

THERE'S MORE TO G A L L AT I N LIFESTYLE ARTICLE BY NICOLE BELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY PLUM POPPY PHOTOGRAPHY
Being a Part of a Strong Community and Serving Those Who Live and Work in the Community It wasn’t long after expanding Gallatin Lifestyle that my husband Scott and I quickly realized that in order to fully communicate to others what all Gallatin has to offer, we needed to immerse ourselves in the heart of it. Community in Gallatin is more than the traditional definition of community. Community in Gallatin is about the generosity and kindness of the people who live in it. It’s about businesses, large and small, new and existing, championing for each other and supporting locally. We live in Gallatin and it is important to us to be involved as much as possible to serve our community, help businesses grow and deliver the best to our readers. With community topof-mind, a space was needed to host events, meet with others and a space to bring people together. We had our eye on a vacant downtown space on S. Water Ave, a block off the square, and knew it was perfect for what we wanted to do. The location of our offices and social space was key to making all of this achievable. The 1500 sqft space has a large open reception/social area, two large offices, a kitchen and a breakroom. With fresh paint, new flooring, brightly colored furniture and even an ivy wall, Gallatin Lifestyle’s office and social space, just like our first publication, is here and open for business! We couldn't be more excited to share it with you!
