In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. The true spirit of Thanksgiving encourages the conscious expression of gratitude. Our focus is spending time with those we love as time spent with those important people in our lives encourages us to give back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and slaying goals can be very healthy, forgetting to place importance on being present, enjoying the ride and appreciating those around us that have helped us along in our journey, can leave us missing out on what truly matters. Being where our feet are currently, in the moment, is the most important thing when we are meditating on those things and people who bring us joy. We’ll never be content if we look outside ourselves and at our possessions or titles to determine if we are fulfilled. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are so thankful for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. We are especially thankful for our partners who help bring this magazine to your doorstep each month. They are part of our vision and purpose of bringing inspiring stories and the good news of the community directly to you. November is National Healthy Skin Month and as we approach the new year, there is no better time than now to be reminded of how important it is to take care of our largest and most important organ of our body: our skin! While our skin and its healthy functions play such a vital role in our health, it is also the most vulnerable portion of our bodies and it takes intentional actions to actively protect it. Skin cancer is the most common form of all cancers worldwide. Genetics, time and sun exposure all play a role in our risk of developing an issue in our lifetime; however, there are certain steps that we can take to minimize some of those risks on our own. Dr. James Allred at Wellskin Dermatology & Aesthetics in Gallatin knows all too well the dangers of unhealthy skin and has dedicated his lifetime of professional work to helping people understand how to better take care of their skin as a way to take control of their entire wellness in the process. Dr. Allred says it’s from that balance of the skin being a window into the total wellness of an individual that the name Wellskin was born. Dr. Allred is also very intentional in making the distinction between someone’s health and his/her overall well-being. “Traditionally, health in the west has been viewed simply as the absence of disease--for example, a person is healthy if they don't have something like a broken bone or depression. While this is true, wellness takes things a step further and says not only do we want you to be disease-free, but we want your body,

mind and spirit to be at its peak and optimal state,” says Dr. Allred. Taking care of our skin is one of the most important things we can do for our overall health and wellness. While there are different risks in the summer months and the winter months, Dr. Allred says there are some things we can do year-round to minimize our risk factors, both in the summer and winter. There are also some common (and dangerous) misconceptions about the sun’s effect on our skin that we all need to know, as well. First, a base tan, and having that mindset, is actually quite dangerous and damaging. “We have found that the number of bad sunburns a person gets is the most important risk factor in developing skin cancers. Those intense burns are really dangerous, so I plead with my patients to avoid the myth of a healthy base tan because that is really just putting gasoline on the fire,” he says. That being said, Dr. Allred says that another misconception he sees is that many people delay being seen by a dermatologist when they have potential skin cancer because they believe that all skin cancers are a death sentence; but, that’s quite the contrary. “The good news is that the vast majority of skin cancers are really treatable in fairly simple ways, sometimes in just a few minutes. We should pay attention to our skin because skin cancer is dangerous and time is the most important variable. In the majority of cases, if we catch something early then the treatment is usually less invasive and more successful,” says Dr. Allred. CONTINUED >

While it’s true that sunburns mostly occur in the summer, the winter months pose a problem for vulnerable skin in a myriad of other ways, too. A number of conditions tend to flare in the winter, such as eczema, dry skin, and psoriasis, which all can lead to even more serious issues if not treated. While medications are sometimes indicated for a few of these chronic ailments, Dr. Allred says many times using a simple moisturizer like Eucerin or CeraVe (or virgin coconut oil for those who want to be more natural) can ward off or reduce the majority of these conditions. What about other tips that we can do to help ourselves? Sunscreen can be used daily both for protection and as a normal moisturizer. Next, a retinol or retinoid cream can

be used to promote the healthy synthesis of new collagen which tightens skin, reduces blemishes and fades dark marks. And third, maintain a healthy and intentional skincare routine with high-quality products and procedures like regularly-scheduled hydrafacials and microneedling that help promote long-term skin health. These are some of the many plans and treatments that Wellskin helps with patients, as well. As Dr. Allred points out, “Wellskin is unique in that we are backed by a board-certified dermatologist, so skin is our only thing. I spent years training in dermatology, studying the skin even on a microscopic level, so we have a deep understanding of the skin and what treatments work. The main difference for us is what we

call "cosmedical" where we have the understanding of skin disease and medicines, but can also layer on the cosmetic procedures (like hydrafacials and chemical peels and injectables) that can help restore a patient to skin wellness.” Wellskin continues to shine as a leader in our area to help keep all of us safe, healthy and well. While being a local and privately-owned business in Gallatin, Dr. Allred and his staff continue to find ways to give back to our community and support a number of local organizations. In addition, they also support and sponsor multiple children to help send them

to Camp Discovery–a camp where kids with uncommon and/or severe skin diseases can meet and interact with kids with similar challenges. Dr. Allred was a camp counselor during his residency training and is still passionate to this day about helping kids meet their full potential. DANA FARLEY RECALLS HOW A FAMILY STORY FROM OVER FIFTY YEARS AGO STILL SPEAKS TO OUR GALLATIN VALUES

Gallatin holds so many stories that have shaped our local landscape and culture. Memorialized through various storytellers, passed down from generation to generation, painted on murals, preserved in books and individual memories, some of these stories deserve to be told over and over again. One of our local stories that deserves that distinction is that of Eddie Sherlin and Bill Ligon. Dana Farley, lifelong Sumner County resident, local Realtor and daughter of Eddie Sherlin, shares one of those stories that shaped her family, our area, and continues to be a testament to Gallatin. “Eddie and Bill grew up on opposite sides of the tracks in Gallatin, but their friendship from an early age and the love of basketball blurred the lines that society (at the time) had created. They attended different Gallatin schools in a difficult era: Eddie an all-white school (Gallatin High) and Bill an allblack school (Union High). They both were exceptional leaders on their basketball teams and in 1970 both teams made it to the district tournament finals where they squared off against each other. This was monumental for so many reasons, but one of the largest reasons was that the two Gallatin high schools were to desegregate the following year. This game would be the first (and the last) time that the schools would play each other. On the day of the game, the two teams battled hard, going back and forth until the fourth quarter when Eddie was seemingly unstoppable leading Gallatin High to victory. The gym erupted with cheers from Gallatin fans and the announcer soon began naming the all-tournament team. Eddie was called first; still crying from the win, he walked out to center court. Then, Bill's name was called next. It took Bill a moment but he started to walk toward Eddie. Eddie, seeing the pain in Bill’s eyes, began walking simultaneously toward his friend, Bill. The crowd that was roaring moments before was now completely silent. Eddie saw his childhood best friend hurting from a tough loss and embraced him. No one could believe what they saw: a white man and a black man embracing each other. Several minutes passed and other players began hugging, too. These two men made Gallatin history in more ways than one that day and so many years later, that moment is still memorialized with a beautiful Bryan Deese mural on the Gallatin Square.” CONTINUED >

A lot has changed in Gallatin since then but Dana still reminisces with a smile as she fondly tells the story of her father and what it ultimately meant to our area. As a proud daughter, the sentiment is expected. But, even more so as a proud local in our area and knowing what it signified, it is even more heartwarming. Now, more than 50 years after that historic and remarkable local tale, Dana carries on that legacy of Eddie and Bill by being relational and intentional in everything she does. Dana serves on the Board of Directors for the Literacy Council of Middle Tennessee which serves so many of our youth by giving them additional reading time during school hours and offering one-on-one tutoring outside of the school setting. Not only does the Literacy Council serve our children, but it also serves our adults to enhance their academic skills–all as a free service to our community (literacymidtn.org). As a local Realtor, she also makes it her mission to serve others and to walk hand-in-hand with them through whatever they need while navigating them through a daunting process. Dana says

today more than ever, people are a bit apprehensive about the real estate market but also says that’s the perfect opportunity for her to demonstrate the caring value and passion she has for helping others. She has helped people navigate the markets through the industry's ups and downs and everything in between. “I love helping them to overcome that fear and showing them the joy that comes from home ownership or the joys of getting to take that next step toward their dream home. Thinking back to my earlier days, one of the most common complaints that people today have is that they wish they would have bought a home sooner,” she says. The same holds true today! Dana still calls Gallatin home where she resides with her husband and three children and she stays involved in the hometown she loves. Being thankful for our health is one of those things we may not think about every day, but it is arguably the most important daily item we have for which to be thankful. Doctors making house calls were always a staple in healthcare throughout history and had long been the primary way for a physician to see an ailing patient in many areas. However, as our time became (and continues to become) more of a valuable asset in our everyday lives, the way we did things changed, too–and so did our way of seeing our doctors and other professionals. Seeing that need around us, Dr. Dustin Webb and his wife Meagan began a journey to provide in-home and in-business chiropractical care to individuals, families and businesses as a way to better help serve people who need to balance busy schedules yet still need access to quality care that we should all be seeking and never neglect. Dr. Webb graduated from MTSU with a degree in Exercise Science and completed his doctorate of chiropractic at Life University in Marietta, GA. He worked in several traditional office settings including high-volume clinics and led his own team. But, through these ventures, he began to see that a need was there for a more practical approach to his passion for helping others. By seeing a need in the community and finding a solution to it, Chiropractical Mobile Wellness was born in 2020. “After working on several different practice models, our family desired to make preventative healthcare more convenient and practical for both the modern family and business professionals. We saw there was a missing link in the way we do healthcare. People often feel like a number and feel unseen and unheard and definitely don’t make time for preventative healthcare/selfcare,” Dr. Webb recalls when reflecting on the inception of his vision. The concept of mobile healthcare and individualized house calls is not new, but it is being revolutionized and perfected by the Webbs. Chiropractical Mobile Wellness allows a patient to schedule a house call (or a workplace call if someone desires treatment at their place of business). been a “game changer” for so many people in our area and that seeing corporate, office, studio and labor workers be able to attain specialized chiropractic care that works within their schedule to help them regain function really brings so much joy to the Webbs. Dr. Webb also provides prenatal and postpartum care, as well as specialized care for children, adolescents and to our senior population–bringing his table, equipment, treatment plans and anything else needed into a patient’s home or office to give them their time and health back! Dr. Webb is not only a skilled chiropractor but also has become a skilled carpenter! In addition to his innovative endeavor of service of bringing house (and workplace) calls back to our area, he has worked side by side with his wife Meagan and their three children in the renovation and preservation of various historic homes in

our area. Their latest undertaking is beautifully and accurately restoring and preserving a historic and iconic home in Gallatin named Wallspring, which was built in 1827 and is currently on the National Register of Historic Places. At 23, Meagan also graduated from MTSU with a degree in Interior Design and a minor in Construction Management. It wasn’t long after the couple was married in 2008 that they bought their first historic home and completely renovated, preserved and rescued the Spanish-style piece of Nashville history. They lived in the historic home during the entire renovation and Meagan teamed up with her mother to make the renovation a family affair. After seeing the rewarding progress and preservation of their first effort, they have since replicated their historic home renovating process 15 times! While Dr. Webb still

assists in his free time, the mother/daughter team, now known as the SheHabbers has developed a name for themselves taking area historic properties that most people run from and historically preserving them to their former glory. Curating designs to keep their historic charm but adding modern functionality and touches is how Meagan uses her design expertise even further to enhance the preservation efforts. “Continuing to rescue historic homes/commercial spaces in Gallatin is definitely a dream that we plan to continue to pursue. Gallatin is dreamy and oozing with the small-town feel that so many are longing for these days and I hope to help keep her that way,” says Meagan.
