Happy Holidays from Gaithersburg City Lifestyle

The holiday season is here, bringing with it the sights, sounds, and traditions that make this time of year so magical. For many of us, the holidays are a chance to rediscover the joy we felt as children, whether it’s the glow of festive lights, the aroma of fresh-baked cookies, or cherished family rituals passed down through generations.

In my family, one tradition we hold dear is gathering for our annual Christmas photo in front of the fireplace. My mom always makes her famous shortbread, a recipe that fills the house with warmth and the unmistakable scent of the holidays and we end the night with our Secret Santa exchange. These simple moments remind me of what this season is truly about: love, laughter, and the memories we create together.

This issue captures that same spirit, from our cover story on Chouquette Chocolate’s founder, Sarah Dwyer, whose whimsical chocolate puzzles bring sweetness to every celebration, to a magical holiday escape at The Greenbrier, where timeless traditions come alive. We’re also sharing local ways to celebrate right here at home: festive happenings in Around Town , cozy dining destinations in our Holiday Eats Roundup, and even a DIY ornament project to add a personal touch to your décor.

While this time of year brings joy to many, it can also be challenging for those who are grieving, lonely, or in need. In the true spirit of the season, let’s come together as a community to extend kindness, compassion, and care to those around us. Whether it’s donating to a local charity, volunteering your time, or simply checking in on a neighbor, every gesture of generosity matters.

Wishing you a holiday season filled with love, peace, and the joy of giving.

CHOUQUETTE CHOCOLATES & CONFECTIONS

From corporate America to caramels, she’s crafting confections inspired by Paris.

For Sarah Dwyer, life’s sweetest moments have always started in the kitchen.

Growing up near Annapolis, she spent hours baking gingerbread cookies and building houses with her mom, Regina, and making chocolate chip cookies with friends. By high school, Dwyer was whipping up Julia Child’s Cambridge chocolate cake for fun.

After a decade in banking, at 38 Dwyer enrolled in Le Cordon Bleu’s Patisserie Program in Paris. Back in Maryland, she couldn’t find chocolate caramels as delicious as the ones she’d enjoyed in France. So, she made her own, minus the artificial ingredients in many U.S. caramels. When demand for her treats from family and friends soared, she opened Chouquette Chocolates and Confections in Gaithersburg, MD.

“I would risk almost life and limb for a chocolate-covered caramel,” says Dwyer, who, as a kid, pressed her thumbs into every chocolate in the box, hunting for the caramels. “When people wanted to buy my chocolates, I thought, maybe this isn’t a hobby, maybe it’s my next career. I really think your first love is the thing you should do for life.”

Dwyer’s fair-trade handcrafted chocolate-covered caramels in mouthwatering flavors like raspberry, coffee, peanut butter—and the more adventurous balsamic, 7-spice, and rosemary—are screen printed with whimsical, bright designs and catchy

sayings and made with natural food coloring like goldenrod for yellow and beetroot for red. Her 10-person team is mostly hired from Cornerstone Montgomery and Sunflower Bakery, and includes neuro-diverse staff who bring unique skills to the business.

Chocolate sets include cherry blossoms, “Maryland Pride” (with a Bay Spice caramel), “Phenomenal Women” featuring Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Taylor Swift, and “DC Monuments.” Some 1,500 retail stores carry her creations, including the U.S. Senate gift shop and Empire State Building store. She clearly identifies flavors so people “don’t have to play chocolate roulette.” Almost all chocolate-caramels are gluten free, with dairy-free and nut-free options, too.

Customers can pay a $125 setup fee, then place custom orders that include a one-color logo and up to five unique designs. “Anything you can put on a T-shirt or a hat I can put on a chocolate,” Dwyer says. “We tell your story on the chocolate.”

Six months ago, Dwyer hit a major milestone when she opened her first retail shop in Gaithersburg. It’s become a go-to spot for buying the best handmade chocolates for birthdays and holiday gifts. Her store is one of a handful of shops exclusively selling handcrafted chocolates in the DMV. Chocolate caramel fans can pop in from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday to build their own custom box.

Dwyer also sells emergency desk chocolate: “twig” chocolate sticks for $10 in flavors like Regina’s Toffee, named after her mom. For the holidays, she has a chocolate-caramels pie set, holiday drinks collection, holiday movies set, and collection for Chanukah and Kwanzaa. On Small Business Saturday, customers can make customized Advent Calendars. Once a month, she runs a truffle-making classes where participants create a box of 16 chocolates for $65. Every Friday and Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. for $5 people can make a personalized chocolate bar in the store.

Her signature creation are her customizable 16-piece chocolate puzzles, which she spent over a year developing, then patented. Her favorite is the gingerbread house puzzle, which uses her mother’s spice mix and evokes a Christmassy scent. “It smells like holiday baking and Christmas, and brings me right back to being in the kitchen with my family,” Dwyer says.

THE GREENBRIER

There’s a certain kind of magic that descends upon the Allegheny Mountains when winter arrives. The kind that makes twinkling lights sparkle a little brighter and fires crackle a little warmer. At The Greenbrier, that magic transforms America’s Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, into a holiday wonderland where traditions old and new come alive, inviting guests to truly come “Home for the Holidays.”

From the moment you step through the grand front entrance, festooned in garland and ribbons, the scent of pine and gingerbread fills the air. Every hallway glows with the warm light of chandeliers reflecting off crimson and emerald décor, and the energy of the season is unmistakable, joyous, elegant, and undeniably Greenbrier.

The celebration begins in December with Weekends With Santa, a beloved tradition that captures the spirit of the season for guests of all ages. Each weekend brings a carefully curated mix of classic fun and grown-up indulgence, from bourbon, cocktails and wine tastings, to gingerbread

house and wreath-making workshops. Families wander the resort grounds on festive scavenger hunts or gather for heartwarming photo opportunities beneath towering Christmas trees.

But the true highlight comes every December Saturday evening, when guests gather for the Tree Lighting Ceremony on the front lawn. Children squeal with delight as Santa himself arrives to give the command to“light up The Greenbrier,”and suddenly, the historic façade shines under thousands of sparkling bulbs. With carolers singing and cookies in hand, it’s a moment that captures the essence of holiday nostalgia; timeless, joyful and utterly enchanting.

When the week of Christmas finally arrives, The Greenbrier feels like something from a storybook. Time-honored traditions, including cookie and craft workshops, elegant dinners, cantatas and the ceremonial lighting of the yule log, fill the days with festive cheer. Guests who book the Christmas Package enjoy a daily breakfast buffet in the Main Dining Room,

where holiday music drifts through the same elegant space that has served generations of distinguished guests since 1913. A resort credit included in the package invites even more exploration, from fine dining and spa treatments to a long list of winter activities.

And when it comes to activities, The Greenbrier doesn’t disappoint. With more than 55 indoor and outdoor experiences, every guest can find their perfect way to celebrate the season. Lace up your skates for a spin under the stars at the outdoor rink, or bundle up for a carriage ride or sleigh ride, if the snow obliges, through 11,000 scenic acres. For thrill-seekers, off-road driving in a Jeep Rubicon or Polaris RZR offers an unforgettable winter adventure, while those seeking tranquility can cast a line along Howard’s Creek or unwind at the world-famous mineral spa. Indoors, families challenge one another in the bowling alley or tackle an escape room, while shooters stay warm at the heated 5-stand at The Greenbrier Gun Club.

Of course, the season wouldn’t be complete without a grand finale, and The Greenbrier has been welcoming the new year in style for more than a century. This year’s New Year’s celebration includes a performance of The Nutcracker Ballet, family pickleball tournaments, cocktail mixology classes, a festive fun run and an elegant dinner leading up to the Countdown to 2026. As the clock strikes midnight, guests raise their glasses, the band strikes up a lively tune, and the ballroom comes alive with laughter, music and memories that will last long after the final toast.

At The Greenbrier, the holidays aren’t just celebrated, they’re cherished. Whether you’re skating under the lights, sipping bourbon by the fire or watching Santa light the great tree, one thing is certain: there’s no place quite like“Home for the Holidays."

Restore damaged teeth or replace missing ones with our custom-made crowns and bridges. Crowns cover and protect weakened teeth, while bridges fill the gaps left by missing teeth.

For minor imperfections, dental bonding and contouring offer a quick and effective solution. Bonding uses tooth-colored resin to repair chips, close small gaps, or improve the shape of teeth. Contouring involves gently reshaping the enamel to improve the appearance of slightly misshapen teeth.

Our practice also specializes in dental crowns and bridges, tooth colored fillings, gum contouring, porcelain veneers, and orthodontic options. Your journey to optimal oral health begins in a setting where expertise meets elegance, and your comfort and satisfaction are always our ultimate goals.

CRAFTING CHEER: DIY WINTER CRAFTS

ARTICLE BY ERICA

ORNAMENT CLUSTERS

SUPPLIES

• 22 gauge wire

• Ornaments of at least 3 varying shades and sizes

• Wire snips

STEP 1

Cut desired length of wire for a cluster, about 24”

STEP 2

Add an ornament about 4” from one end of the wire and twist the wire around the top of the ornament to provide a base for your cluster. Twist about 5 times. You should still have about 4” of wire at the end; you will need it to tie onto your garland, tree, or wreath.

STEP 3

Continue adding ornaments to the wire, alternating sizes and colors until you have 4-6” of wire remaining.

STEP 4

Twist the remaining wire around the top of your final ornament 5 times to secure all of your ornaments in place. Making sure to leave at least 4” of wire in place at the end in order to tie onto garland, tree, or wreath.

STEP 5

Use the ends of the wire to attach to your holiday item of choice!!

Pro tip: Keep your clusters to the 24” length to keep from getting too heavy and/or having ornaments pop off. Ornaments will pop off at times, but they will still look gorgeous and you can always glue the ornament back onto to the top. Simple, gorgeous, and impactful!
