LMS offers an authentic Montessori program from early childhood through high school, adhering to principles and scientific methods for your child’s development. The elementary learning environment (grades 1-6) fosters independence and focus through individual or small group work, natural lighting, soft colors, and organized, accessible materials. New students quickly adapt to Montessori’s hands-on, interest-driven teaching. The classroom is a vibrant, happy community where students explore, create, and reflect, with teachers offering support and introducing new material as needed. Clear expectations are balanced with openended opportunities, promoting both comfort and inspiration for learning. Our Secondary Montessori program serves 7th - 10th grade with expansion of grade levels each year. We integrate rigorous academics with purposeful work, preparing students to become selfconfident, contributing adults. Our approach addresses adolescents’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independence. Beyond challenging their intellect, compassion, diplomacy and collaboration are developed through personally experiencing human and nature interdependence. Students also learn business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on participation in real economic activity provided by Laniakea’s micro-economy program. We are accepting 3 new students to join our Secondary program. Students must have a strong work ethic with a positive behavior record.

Hard to believe it’s 2026 y’all! The New Year’s season is, and always has been, my very favorite time of the year. I’m not sure what it is, but there’s just something special about the feeling of that “new year” – that reset of hope and optimism and looking forward to great things ahead. And I’ve always loved the month of January. The weather here in Florida is cooler - but not too cold, the holidays are behind us so we can get back to business, and we’re filled with a sense of a new start and new goals to pursue. This month’s issue highlights Healthy Lifestyles and Wellness, and adopting and maintaining these healthy practices and habits. We hope you’ll enjoy our features on some of our local businesses who work hard to help us all stay fit and healthy. Whether it’s eating delicious and nutritious food from Gainesville’s newest restaurant The Rose and Flame, exploring some unique fitness practices, or keeping our bodies and souls healthy with therapies and services, you’ll find it all here. And as always, you’ll find great information about our events and our local businesses in our Business Monthly pages and our Calendar of Events section. We hope this new year brings to you good health, good times, and much success. Cheers to a fun, healthy, and happy 2026! And see you around town! RYNNI HENDERSON, PUBLISHER @GAINESVILLECITYLIFESTYLE

SWEET SERENDIPITY PHOTOGRAPHY

We spend so much time making sure our homes, cars, and businesses are protected — and that’s important — but how often do we stop to think about protecting ourselves? True wellness isn’t something you can buy or file a claim for; it’s something you build every day through small, intentional choices. Your mind is your most valuable asset. Guard it carefully. Step away from screens when you need to. Spend time in quiet, in prayer, or in reflection. Learn something new. Surround yourself with people and energy that bring peace, not stress. Your body is your foundation. You don’t have to be perfect — just consistent. Take a walk, drink more water, stretch, rest when you’re tired. These are the small “premium payments” that keep your physical health strong for the long term. And your soul — that’s where it all connects. Feed it with gratitude, kindness, and purpose. Slow down long enough to enjoy a sunrise, to check in on a friend, or to simply breathe deeply and be thankful for where you are. In insurance, we talk about “coverage that protects what matters most.” But no policy will ever be as powerful as the one you write for yourself — the one that keeps your heart open, your body moving, and your spirit grounded. So, this season, invest in your greatest asset — you. Because when your mind, body, and soul are in balance, everything else falls into place.

The Rose & Flame starts with a simple belief: healthy food should taste good, feel good, and be something you actually look forward to. Our dishes are made from real ingredients, cooked with care, and seasoned with intention—because we think eating well and enjoying yourself shouldn’t be opposites. But food is only part of why we’re here. For a long time, adults in Gainesville have wanted a place that feels a little more grown-up—a spot where you can have a good meal, a real conversation, a drink made with some thought behind it, and maybe even get up and dance when the mood hits. Nothing flashy. Nothing forced. Just a space that feels comfortable, warm, and alive. That’s what Kairos means to us: the right moment. The moment when everything feels aligned—good food, good company, the right energy in the room. At The Rose & Flame, we’re creating that moment on purpose. Come in, take your time, and settle in. Maybe you’re on a date. Maybe you’re out with friends. Maybe you just needed a break from the week. Either way, you’re welcome here.

The music isn’t there to overwhelm you—it’s there to lift the night a little. The lighting isn’t dramatic—it’s just soft enough to make you feel at ease. And the space isn’t trying to be something it’s not—it’s simply a place built with adults in mind. You can eat clean without feeling restricted. You can enjoy yourself without feeling guilty. And if the mood strikes, you can move a little—because sometimes joy shows up that way. Gainesville finally has a place that understands the pace and the cravings of its grown community. Not a trend. Not a scene. Just something real. Welcome to The Rose & Flame. We’re glad you’re here. info@kairoseventsandcatering.com 352-776-8706 6 W. University Avenue, Gainesville Fl

Discover Your Personalized Skincare Routine

Expert-selected products. Results you can see and feel. At Gainesville Dermatology, our providers hand-select medical-grade skincare proven to deliver real results. Whether you’re focused on hydration, anti-aging, or repairing overall skin health, we’ll guide you to the routine that fits your skin perfectly. Our expert medical providers and aestheticians understand the importance of using the right products for your specific skin type. With targeted formulas backed by dermatology, we help you protect your skin from environmental damage, maintain a healthy barrier, and achieve long-lasting visible improvement.

The Importance of a Tailored Skincare Routine Your skin is the body’s largest and most visible organ, yet its care is often underestimated. Maintaining healthy, radiant skin requires more than occasional attention—it requires consistent, intentional care supported by clinically advanced formulations. Each day, the skin endures exposure to UV rays, environmental pollutants, and oxidative stress, all of which contribute to premature aging and long-term cellular damage. Once this damage occurs, it can be challenging to reverse. A personalized skincare routine, guided by expert recommendations and powered by medical-grade ingredients, provides the most effective defense against free radical damage while supporting optimal skin function and long-term rejuvenation. To schedule a FREE skincare consultation with one of our medical aestheticians, please contact our office. C UR B A P P E A L | HO ME + D E SIGN

As the owner of Corey Amira Custom Homes here in Gainesville, I’ve always believed a house should do more than look beautiful—it should actively support the health and well-being of the families who live in it. That belief drives ever y decision we make, from the materials we select to the way we design each space. One of the first things I focus on is natural light. In nearly all of our homes, we incorporate abundant windows and strategically placed exterior doors to let sunlight pour in. Not only does this create an uplifting environment, but it also supports healthier sleep cycles and overall mood. For evenings, we install dimmer switches in many areas so homeowners can soften the lighting at night and ease into a restful pace. Indoor air quality is equally important to me. That’s why we use SherwinWilliams Emerald paint throughout our builds. It’s a low-VOC product that helps

minimize chemical exposure and keeps the indoor environment fresh from day one. Paired with upgraded insulation in every home, we’re able to deliver energy-efficient, comfortable living spaces that promote long-term wellness. I also believe wellness should extend beyond the indoors. Many of our designs feature large porches—welcoming outdoor spaces that encourage families to step outside, relax, and breathe in the fresh Florida air. And because movement is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, we often build dedicated home gyms or workout rooms so staying active is both convenient and enjoyable. To me, a truly custom home is one that nurtures the people inside it. By blending thoughtful design with healthy materials and lifestyle-focused features, we create homes that support better living from the ground up. It’s a commitment I’m proud to bring to every project.

Sensei Pedro Alphonso Newberry, Florida At 84, Sensei Pedro A lphonso of Newberr y, Florida, embodies the art he teaches. Alphonso keeps his art and practice close to the traditional Japanese techniques developed on the island of Okinawa, by Gichin Funokoshi the founder of Shotokan Karate, and teaches his students with deep attention to this technique. Alphonso teaches that karate shapes character through courtesy, integrity, calmness, non-aggression, and lifelong learning, supporting life beyond technique. Shotokan’s training spirit values perseverance, strong basics, mindful kata, controlled kumite, and repetition for mastery, cultivating zanshin—continuous

awareness. Its powerful, efficient techniques and breath control develop not only physical precision but also inner strength, humility, resilience, and ethical living. Modern neuroscience highlights the deep link between physical movement and cognitive function. Karate has embodied this truth for generations. Every technique requires synchronization of intention, breath, and motion. This alignment strengthens the neural pathways that govern attention, memory, and sensory awareness. At its heart, karate promotes harmony— strength without aggression, confidence without ego. It offers a path that continues to evolve with the practitioner, supporting health, stability, and inner growth throughout life.

“There is no first strike in Karate. We fight only for protection, guided by our deep training.” JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/GA I N E S V I L L E F L

Dr. Laura W. McChesney, Chiropractic Physician

Health is built through small choices, daily movement, and the courage to begin.

BEGIN TODAY, THRIVE TOMORROW ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY DR. LAURA W. MCCHESNEY

Taking ownership of your health is one of the most empowering choices you can make. Good health doesn’t just happen, it’s something we build through daily habits, movement, and mindful decisions. Yet, for many people, the hardest part of that journey is getting started. Especially making that first appointment with a healthcare professional. Instead, we convince ourselves to put our own health, our most precious asset, aside. Raise your hand if you’ve told yourself: “I’m too busy. It’s not that bad. It’ll go away. I’m just getting old.” Newsflash: putting yourself last doesn’t just hurt you, it affects your family, your friends, even your work. As a rehab chiropractor, I see firsthand how movement and proactive care can transform lives. Our bodies are designed to move, and when we move well, we live well. But when pain or stiffness sets in, it’s easy to ignore the signs and hope they go away. Over time, those small issues can become barriers that limit not only mobility but confidence and energy too. Movement supports every system in the body, from

38

H OU SE CA LL | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

our joints and muscles to our nervous and immune systems. Even our family/social life and finances. So why is making that first appointment so hard? Because it represents change, and change can be uncomfortable. There’s uncertainty about what to expect, fear of hearing bad news, and spiraling thoughts of what it will take to accomplish feeling well. But that first call, that first step, is where transformation begins. It’s a commitment to yourself and a statement that your well-being matters. Taking charge of your health isn’t about perfection; it’s about progress. It’s about learning how to move better, feel better, and live with more energy and confidence. Once you cross that initial threshold, you’ll often find that what felt intimidating becomes empowering. The first appointment isn’t just about getting help, it’s about reclaiming ownership of your health, your movement, and your life. So, are you ready to take that first step toward change? Or will New Year’s Day 2027 look the same as 2026? rehabandchiropractic.com

Wellness Inspired Fashion for Real Life

Fashion in 2026 is about freedom, feeling good, looking authentic, and living fully in what you wear. ARTICLE BY LEZA MUELLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADRIENNE FLETCHER PHOTOGRAPHY

40

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | S HOPPIN G

Fashion in 2026 is becoming a lifestyle choice, supporting your real life, wellness, and the way you move through your day. Clothing is part of a healthy routine. When your outfit feels good, fits well, and reflects who you are, your body relaxes, your confidence rises, and your mind feels clearer. The new standard of style blends comfort with intention. Soft, breathable fabrics, flexible waistbands, and wide-leg silhouettes allow natural movement, while structured pieces empower without restricting. Thoughtful details like pockets, adjustable features, and versatile layering make it easy to transition from morning routines to evening plans, or from work to social events, without a complete outfit change. Fashion should support your life, not complicate it, and your clothing should never cause stress, restrict movement, or make you feel like you’re portraying someone else’s version of yourself. The key to fashion is simple: your clothes should work for you. The most stylish people choose pieces that align with their routines, values, and confidence. When your wardrobe feels intentional, comfortable, and uniquely you, style becomes effortless, empowering, and enjoyable every single day. elizabethmueller.cabionline.com

NEW YEAR, New You: DETOX FOR Vitality January is a great time to cleanse and reset your body ARTICLE BY LISA LOTHIAN: CERTIFIED TOXICITY AND DETOX SPECIALIST | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TYLER LABORDE: NAPS HAPPEN LLC January - time for a “clean slate.” Previous periods of indulgence can lead to diminished vitality. You periodically change the oil in your car. Consider how “clogged up” your detox pathways may be. Chemicals - including pesticides, plastics and fragrances affect every body system. Studies link toxins to rising rates of autism, disruption of hormones, digestion, brain function, sleep and metabolism. Here are three simple ways to help support your body’s natural detox pathways this month: • Hydrate deeply: Aim for half your body weight in ounces of filtered water daily. • Sweat regularly: Movement, sauna, or brisk walks help eliminate toxins through the skin. • Eat detox-friendly foods: Cruciferous vegetables (like broccoli), asparagus and garlic support cleansing. Sleep, energy, and weight regulation often improve when detox pathways are supported. Hormones rebalance. Clarity—mental and emotional—can follow. Depending on the severity of toxicity, you may notice improvement with a few adjustments. Simple, non-invasive assessments can determine what level of toxicity you may be facing. At my new office at Club Synergie, schedule a visit for your complimentary toxicity assessment and discover customized programs. And if you’re thinking of having a baby, consider a customized detox before you conceive. The rates of autism alone have gone from 1 in 1000 in 1980’s to 1 in 31 in 2022! Prioritize your wellbeing as much as your vehicles! Your body knows how to heal—sometimes it just needs a little help. Lisa Lothian, 561-703-2747

Sleep: The Foundation

of True Wellness We often hear that sleep is one of the pillars of health—alongside nutrition and exercise— but the truth is, sleep is the foundation that supports them all. Without it, even the best diet and fitness routine can’t deliver lasting results. Yet for many, quality sleep feels out of reach. According to the CDC, nearly one in seven adults in the United States struggles to fall asleep most nights, and almost one in five has trouble staying asleep. These restless nights aren’t just frustrating, they chip away at our mood, energy, focus, metabolism,

Dr. Dawn Smith

and immune function. Over time, chronic sleep loss raises the risk of anxiety, weight gain, heart disease, and cognitive decline. Deep, consistent sleep doesn’t just leave you feeling rested, it influences nearly every system in your body. During restorative sleep, your brain clears toxins that build up during the day, your muscles repair from daily stress, and your hormones rebalance to support metabolism and mood. Missing out on that process can quietly undermine health even when everything else appears “on track.” Many turn to sleep aids, sedatives, or melatonin for relief, but these can come with drawbacks. Some medications can alter natural sleep architecture or leave people groggy the next morning, while long-term use may create dependency. Even melatonin, though widely used, can disrupt the body’s hormonal rhythms when overused or mistimed. In recent years, sleep science has shifted toward understanding how the body can restore itself naturally, without heavy sedatives or dependency-forming aids. Instead of forcing the body to shut down, the goal is to help it return to its natural rhythm. This is where natural bioactive compounds, such as ingestible peptides, offer a new approach. These specialized nutrients work with the body’s own systems to help regulate stress hormones, support neurotransmitter balance, and encourage deeper, more restorative stages of sleep, helping people wake up feeling truly refreshed and rebalanced. Restorative sleep isn’t just about the number of hours you get; it’s about the quality of those hours and how deeply your body repairs, resets, and prepares for the next day. When you prioritize sleep, you invest in the foundation of your overall wellness. https://www.absolutewellnessandweightloss.com/

Why deep, restorative sleep fuels every aspect of health, balance, and long-term vitality. ARTICLE BY DAWN SMITH, MD

options, look to those that connect them to nature, or ask a smart speaker to count to ten while playing hide and seek, or show them items for searching with a scavenger hunt program. ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA MILLER OWNER/HEAD OF SCHOOL

Helping to prepare your child for life begins with a foundation of wellness practices that empowers their physical and emotional resilience. This helps them develop self-care and independence. Physical wellness consists of the care of the body with regards to nutrition, sleep, and regular physical activity which are major factors for intellectual growth. This helps to reduce anxiety. Emotional wellness is developed through slowing down long enough to notice what is going on around you. Children can learn to be very observant or can get in the habit of focusing on their devices and closing off the external world. Connecting to community and engaging with others in the community will foster social skills and build emotional wellness. The impacts of screen media impact both physical and emotional health and wellbeing. A sedentary lifestyle is not how children develop wellness. When offering your children technology and screen time
