LMS offers an authentic Montessori program from early childhood through high school, adhering to principles and scientific methods for your child’s development.
The elementary learning environment (grades 1-6) fosters independence and focus through individual or small group work, natural lighting, soft colors, and organized, accessible materials. New students quickly adapt to Montessori’s hands-on, interest-driven teaching. The classroom is a vibrant, happy community where students explore, create, and reflect, with teachers offering support and introducing new material as needed. Clear expectations are balanced with openended opportunities, promoting both comfort and inspiration for learning.
Our Secondary Montessori program serves 7th - 10th grade with expansion of grade levels each year.
We integrate rigorous academics with purposeful work, preparing students to become selfconfident, contributing adults. Our approach addresses adolescents’ physical, emotional, social, and cognitive growth, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and independence. Beyond challenging their intellect, compassion, diplomacy and collaboration are developed through personally experiencing human and nature interdependence. Students also learn business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on participation in real economic activity provided by Laniakea’s micro-economy program.
We are accepting 3 new students to join our Secondary program. Students must have a strong work ethic with a positive behavior record.

It’s hard to believe we’re wrapping up 2025, and time sure does fly by when you’re having this much fun sharing all the wonderful stories and events that make up our Gainesville community.

But here we are at the end of the year, with the holidays and the spirit of the season upon us. This is the time to try to enjoy the real spirit of the holidays – being with loved ones, reaching out to long lost friends and family, and helping those in need. And while this season is joyful for many, it can also be difficult for those who are grieving, lonely, or needing a helping hand. In the true spirit of the season, let’s come together as a community to extend kindness and compassion to those who may be struggling. Whether it’s donating to a local charity, volunteering your time, or simply checking in on a neighbor, every act of generosity makes a difference.
In this issue you’ll be able to read all about our very generous businesses who continue to give. You’ll find our City Scene pages where we’re out and about celebrating and supporting local businesses and associations, and our Love Local/ Local Favorites pages showcase local businesses and their products, selections, and services. Don’t forget to check out our calendar of events where we’re highlighting the best of what we have to offer during the holidays - from events and entertainment, to opportunities for giving back.
As this year comes to a close, we’d like to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to all of our readers, our partners and contributors, and to this wonderful community we call home. We wish you all a glorious, safe and fun holiday season, and we look forward to another great year ahead.
Holiday Blessings to you all, and see you around town!

PRESERVING THE LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

The Gainesville Woman’s Club (GWC), founded in 1903 with 45 charter members, has a proud legacy of promoting learning, social advancement and impactful community projects. Women could not vote and used their voices through letters to men who held the power to make change. In 1906, the Gainesville Sun published an article titled, “Spare the trees, says the Woman’s Club…” The City Commission subsequently voted to prohibit removal of shade trees from the city streets. In 1913 GWC contributed $500 to match city funds for the creation of Roper Park.
Gainesville’s public library was founded by GWC, accumulating 2,000 volumes and earning a Carnegie Library grant. In 1918 GWC celebrated the opening of the first library building. Members focused on social welfare, literary pursuits, music, fine arts and community beautification. GWC established kindergartens in our public schools and programs for military members.
In 1954 members purchased five acres on West University Avenue and built an iconic clubhouse, opening in 1961. This landmark facility continues to serve members and the community as a venue for meetings, receptions, fund-raisers, events. Since 2021 Preserving the Legacy Society provides the community an opportunity to financially support upgrades and renovations to this clubhouse, designated as a Florida Historic Site.
Today, GWC’s 230 members continue its legacy by providing women opportunities for personal enrichment through volunteerism and leadership. Annual special events provide financial support to Peaceful Paths, Guardian Angel Service Dogs, Caring and Sharing Learning School, Child Advocacy Center, Star Theatre, Guardian Ad Litem, Altrusa House, Girls Place and Camp Crystal among others.

Edwin Duque shares the most common holiday insurance claims and practical tips to stay protected.
ARTICLE BY TAYLOR NOE: GREATFLORIDA INSURANCE OF GAINESVILLE
The holidays are a time to make wonderful memories with family and friends, but they also bring unique risks. Here are the top claims we see during the holidays and how to stay ahead of them.
Candles, overloaded outlets, and dry Christmas trees are frequent culprits. Real trees should be kept well-watered, and artificial ones should have a fire-resistant label. Keep open flames away from your tree and always turn off decorative lights when you leave or go to bed.
Burglaries often rise during the holidays, especially when families travel and packages stack up on porches. Keep your home well-lit, lock all windows and doors, and consider adding extra security measures.
Auto claims tend to spike in December, with holiday traffic and distracted drivers leading to more collisions. Make sure your policy is up to date and can handle potential damage if an accident occurs.
Kitchen burns, unattended food, and alcohol-related mishaps are common during holiday parties. Liability coverage becomes especially important when guests are involved.
Staying aware of seasonal risks can help protect your home, your guests, and your peace of mind. A little preparation now can save you time, stress, and money down the road.

Empower loved ones with confidence, comfort, and care through specialized pelvic health physical therapy.
The holidays are a season of giving — of gifts, gratitude, and togetherness. At Purely Pelvic, we embrace this spirit by celebrating one of the most meaningful gifts of all: the gift of health.
Pelvic health is often left out of the holiday conversation, but for many, it’s at the heart of their quality of life. Whether it’s healing after childbirth, addressing chronic pelvic pain, regaining confidence with bladder or bowel control, or reconnecting with their body after trauma — pelvic health matters. And, it’s a gift worth giving.
When you support someone’s journey to pelvic wellness, you’re giving more than physical relief — you’re giving them freedom, empowerment, and hope. You’re saying: “You deserve to feel whole again.“
This season, consider gifting a loved one the holistic treatment available at Purely Pelvic; it could change their life. Health doesn’t typically come wrapped in ribbons, but it lasts far longer than most gifts. It shows up in how we move, rest, connect, and thrive. And when someone feels good in their body again — especially after struggling in silence — it’s nothing short of transformative.
ARTICLE BY EVETTE D’AVY REED, PT, CHC
At Purely Pelvic, we’re honored to be part of that transformation. Every day, we see the strength it takes to seek help, and the power of compassionate care that makes a difference. This holiday season, we invite you to join us in giving the gift of healing — to yourself, your loved ones, and your community. Because the best gifts aren’t always found under the tree — sometimes, they begin with taking care of what’s within.
Happy & Healthy Holidays, Evette D’Avy Reed, PT, CHC Purely Pelvic LLC

GIVING YOUR NEW HOME THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO LAST GENERATIONS
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY COREY AMIRA
Amira Custom Homes designs and builds with longevity in mind. In Florida’s variable climate, stronger structure matters — that’s why we frame exterior walls with 2x6 studs or use CMU block. These heavier assemblies increase strength and improve resistance to wind loads.
Proper water management is another cornerstone. Every Amira home includes gutters because controlling roof runoff protects siding and foundations from prolonged moisture exposure. Directing water away from the home reduces rot, staining, and longterm structural damage.
Energy efficiency lowers operating costs and extends the life of mechanical systems. By optimizing insulation, air sealing, and HVAC sizing, we reduce strain on equipment and help systems perform reliably for years.
We also prefer premium materials in many applications. While initial costs can be higher, higher-quality windows, roofing, siding, and finishes often outlast entry-level alternatives, reducing repair and replacement cycles over the home’s lifetime.
Taken together, these choices — robust wall assemblies, thoughtful water management, energy-efficient design, and durable products — form a practical approach to building homes that stand the test of time. That’s our commitment: sensible, purposeful decisions that protect your investment and keep your home performing for decades.

Corey Amira

Amira Custom Homes , founded in 2015 by Corey Amira, has been building custom homes for Gainesvillearea clients and neighbors ever since. Based in Haile Village, we specialize in high-quality, unique residences tailored to each family’s needs and wants. Our focus on craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and long-lasting materials ensures homes that perform beautifully and reflect the personalities and lifestyles of the people who live in them.

A journey of love, resilience, faith, and service shaping one family’s legacy in Gainesville, Florida.
When Sean Taylor’s family left Brooklyn, New York, for Gainesville in 1978, the change was immediate. “It was a culture shock,” he remembers. Three years later, Kerry’s family arrived, and the two met in high school. Surrounded by a diverse circle of friends, their interracial relationship in the 1980s wasn’t always easy, but it became the foundation of a marriage that has lasted nearly 35 years.
Sean and Kerry raised four children in Gainesville. Each has pursued their own path in fields ranging from engineering to business ownership. Their daughter Gabrielle, born with Down Syndrome, underwent open-heart surgery as an infant and became their bridge to the special needs community. Her joy and love for law enforcement have made her a beloved presence at local events like the annual Tim Tebow Foundation’s Night to Shine Gala. Their life together hasn’t been without hardship. In the mid-2000s, their marriage nearly collapsed. “We came close to divorce,” Sean admits. “But choosing to fight for each other
changed us.” That turning point deepened their resilience, compassion, and shared commitment to serve others.
Sean, who felt called to ministry as a child, has spent three decades in leadership and service. “Leadership is never about titles,” he says. “It’s about people.”
That philosophy fuels their work with Bridge City Community Church, where they’re building a community rooted in practical service through food drives, kids’ initiatives, and family support.
Looking back, Sean and Kerry see Gainesville as the place that shaped their entire story—family, faith, friendships, and vision. “We’ve grown up with this city,” Kerry says. “Now our hope is to give back even more, to leave Gainesville better than we found it.”
Bridge City Community Church gathers Sundays at 10:30 AM at their ministry hub, located just beyond Sun Country Sports, across from Publix in Jonesville (14091 SW 3rd Blvd). Learn more about their community initiatives, including food drives and the Kid2Kid Closet, at bridgecitycc.org

It is no secret that our highly intellectual town is a beehive of innovation and invention. In a “college town” like Gainesville, we enjoy a unique concentration of thought leaders who continue to bring our “Gatortown” to national and global attention.
One such breakthrough comes from Surfplasma, Inc., founded by University of Florida Professor Dr. Subrata Roy. The company is pioneering research in activated plasma— the fourth state of matter—for sterilizing solid surfaces and water. Plasma generates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS), powerful agents that break down microbial cell walls, DNA, and biofilms.
ARTICLE BY TRISHA ROY:
As antibiotic resistance and infection control challenges rise, plasma-based sterilization offers a safe, non-chemical, low-temperature solution ideal for heat-sensitive instruments and PPE. Supported by NASA and the National Science Foundation, Roy’s team has developed a compact, plug-and-play sterilization device that uses standard power, produces no harmful gases, and delivers a 6-log (99.9999%) reduction in pathogens such as E. coli, Marsa and Staphylococcus aureus as well as the COVID 19 virus.
Bob Snyder, CEO of Proteois Technology, a beta tester, noted the device “surpassed our needs in cost, ease of use, and effectiveness.” Surfplasma is now inviting local clinics and surgical centers to join its next testing phase.

As the season for gift-giving approaches, a perfect opportunity arises to teach children the spirit of giving and the joy it brings. Children are in the natural position of receiving gifts but may not have much experience in gift-giving.
A good way to start is by having your child do a “toy audit” and letting them pick toys they no longer use or have outgrown. This can give the toys a new life, as well as allow them to gift to another child. Mention that this also gives your child space for new things, and creates a cycle of giving.
Include your children in preparing the toys by cleaning or repairing, and include all the necessary pieces, and have them be involved in dropping them off at a collection point in person. Take pictures and share with family and friends how your child is becoming a generous person. There are many donation centers and community groups that collect toys for the holidays. Fun4gatorkids.com has a list of places that accept donations for the holidays. Some that are listed include; Alachua and Tri-County US Marine Corps Toys for Tots, Partnership for Strong Families Wish Upon a Star, and Kimberly’s Christmas Festival and Toy Drive which includes an experience for children with bounce houses and vendors.
A blog from Mostt, at https://mostt.com, on letting go, describes a tradition of inviting your child to say “thank you” out loud for the toy as they put it in the collection bag. This can also be done with clothing and shoes for less fortunate children.
Daily Mom Magazine, https://dailymom.com, is another great resource that provides tips on holiday gifting. Karacarreo.com https://karacarreo.com, >Blog>Family lifestyle, describes a 4-step toy and game buyout hosted by parents every year.
The spirit of giving is a powerful experience that brings joy and teaches empathy, as well as provides your family with precious quality time.
