Summer Fun

I hope this letter finds you laying by the pool or a beach or a lake, and soaking in some much-needed Vitamin D. As the days grow longer and our hot summers sink in, I still find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of Summer. There's just something about this season that brings about a sense of excitement and adventure. Sure, Fall has my favorite flavors and scents, Winter has its cozy charms, and I can't deny the beauty of Spring. But when the Summer solstice rolls around, I’m more than ready for the long, languid days sitting by a pool, fishing, or hanging out on a boat. The pages in our Summer Fun issue will help you make the most of this season in the Gainesville area and beyond. And even if Summer doesn't mean three months of summer vacation anymore (because we're, you know, adults and most of us have to work!) we can still look forward to an adventure by crossing things off our ultimate Summer bucket list or relaxing with a new favorite beach read. (P.S. Teachers, you deserve this much-needed break!)

Just like this season has a way of bringing people together, we hope the pages inside this month’s issue will enrich and enliven your experiences this Summer. And let us not forget, July is also Independence Day, and be sure to check out our Calendar of Events for some fun July 4th activities! Have a blessed and fun Fourth of July, and see you around town!

SUBNOVII Plasma Pen: Technology That Delivers Results

Plasma technology takes advantage of the fine layer of plasma that exists along the surface of your skin. The device creates a tiny wound that delivers heat below the skin to begin fibroblast activity, which stimulates collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. The tip of the plasma device never actually touches the skin - it's the power of molecular physics that gives this treatment its magic.

COOKING WITH ERIC & FRIENDS

Join us this month for recipes from grilling lobster tails to smoking ribs

GRILLING LOBSTER TAILS RECIPE

• 4 (6 to 8-ounce) lobster tails, thawed if frozen

• 4 tablespoon (1/2 stick) unsalted butter

• 1/2 medium lemon

• 2 cloves garlic

• 1 tablespoon fresh parsley leaves

• 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided

• 1 teaspoon vegetable or olive oil

To grill the lobster tails, place them meatyside down on a really hot grill for a few minutes to get some grill marks. Once they release easily from the grill grates, flip them over and top with an easy-to-make garlic butter (the tails will finish cooking as the garlic butter melts). The total cook time depends on the size of the tail. You want the meat to be just cooked through, so aim for an internal temperature of 135 to 140F. Serve with lemon wedges for a nice bright pop of flavor to cut through the richness of the garlic butter and the sweetness of the lobster meat.

SMOKING RIBS RECIPE

Use the 2-2-1 method for smoking ribs.

2 hours unwrapped

2 hours wrapped in pink butcher paper

1 hour unwrapped

Always remove the membrane from the back of the ribs. Use a paper towel and butter knife to get under the membrane to pull it off.

Use your favorite rub and liberally apply to all sides.

Cook at 275 degrees (makes for a shorter cook time, also sets the sauce on the ribs)

Place rubbed ribs in the smoker for 2 hours.

After 2 hours, remove ribs from the smoker, apply your favorite bbq sauce and wrap in either foil or butcher paper.

Then place the wrapped ribs back in smoker.

After 2 hours, remove wrapped ribs from smoker. Unwrap and apply more of your favorite bbq sauce. Place back on the smoker for 1 hour unwrapped. This will help set the sauce on the ribs.

After 1 hour, pull the ribs and dig in!

MEET THE TADLOCKS

Dale Tadlock, owner and president of Tadlock Roofing, is a longtime resident of Florida. Dale’s father was an insurance representative who moved the family several times before returning them home to Florida. It was then that 8-year-old Dale realized he never wanted to leave again. “I love Florida,” he said, “and I’m grateful that I grew up here.”

Not long after high school, while working in the construction industry, Dale was given an opportunity to manage the production side of a roofing company. He immediately realized this line of work was perfectly suited to his personality, as he enjoys relating to customers, working outside and providing high-quality workmanship. In 1980 he founded Tadlock Roofing in Tallahassee and has since had the privilege of serving 7 additional communities in Florida, including Gainesville.

In 1980, he married the love of his life, Pamela, who serves as Vice President of Tadlock Roofing. Together they raised three girls –Jessica, Jena and Courtney – and then adopted two boys and two more girls. “Florida is a wonderful place to raise a family,” Pam said. “I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else.”

The Tadlocks’ journey through the adoption process led them to Crimea, Ukraine, where they adopted their two sons, Logan and Lukas. A few years later, they began the process of a Chinese adoption, during which they learned of a little girl in South Florida who had many special needs. They stopped the adoption process in China and added their daughter Isabella to the family. The medical road they have traveled with Isabella has been tough at times, but nothing compares to the joy she brings to everyone she meets. The Tadlocks adopted one more daughter, Elle, and then felt their family of seven children was complete.

The Tadlocks’ passion for adoption led them to be nominated as Angels in Adoption by U.S. Senator Bill Nelson in 2010, and they were presented the award by U.S. Senator Mary Landrieu at the 2010 Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute in Washington, D.C. Adoption advocacy has been and always will be a passion of Tadlock Roofing. tadlockroofing.com/free-estimate/ gainesville-location

Ready for a

Weekend Getaway?

Historic Fernandina Beach, where there is always something new to discover, whether its your first visit or your 20th.

Roughly 100 miles northeast of Gainesville is a seaport village called Fernandina Beach. Fernandina Beach is the northernmost town in east Florida on Amelia Island. It has over 2,450 acres of waterfront and miles of pristine beaches. Fernandina Beach was created to be the beginning of the first cross-state railroad, that went from Amelia Island to Tampa, but track could not be laid across marshes. So Fernandina Beach became home to pirates, bootleggers, millionaires and shrimpers.

Now the historic downtown has shops and restaurants along its quaint streets. Close by is the historic Fort Clinch State Park with its beautiful views and rich history and the 13 miles of beaches boast clear beautiful waters. Perfect for a weekend getaway.

SUMMER SKIN CARE

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SKIN DURING THE HOT SUMMER MONTHS

Maintaining your skin during the summer requires a comprehensive approach. Here are some additional steps to include in your skincare routine:

1. Cleanse and exfoliate: Start by cleansing your skin twice a day with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, sweat, and sunscreen residue. Regular exfoliation, using products like The SaltFacial, helps remove dead skin cells and promotes a more radiant complexion.

2. Apply sunscreen generously: Prior to sun exposure, apply a generous amount of Alastin HydraTint Pro Mineral Broad Spectrum Sunscreen to all exposed areas of your skin. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.

3. Hydrate your skin: Maintain optimal skin hydration by using lightweight moisturizers or serums suitable for your skin type. Alastin HA Immerse Serum is a fantastic choice as it provides intense hydration and helps plump and firm the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

4. Control Pigmentation: Incorporate Alastin A-Luminate Brightening Serum into your routine to address dark spots and achieve a more even skin tone. This serum contains powerful ingredients like tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate and bearberry extract to fade existing discoloration and prevent the formation of new spots.

5. Protect your lips: Don’t forget to shield your lips from the sun’s rays. Apply a lip balm with SPF regularly to prevent dryness, chapping, and sunburn.

6. Drink plenty of water, seek shade during peak sun hours, and wear protective clothing like wide-brimmed hats and lightweight, longsleeved shirts.

SUMMER SKINCARE ESSENTIALS:

Summer Splash and Safety

IT’S IMPORTANT TO KNOW AND MAINTAIN SOME BASIC SAFETY PRACTICES TO PROTECT EVERYONE’S WELL-BEING AND HEALTH, SO YOUR AFTERNOON DIPS ARE WORRY-FREE.

It’s important to know and maintain some basic safety practices to protect everyone’s well-being and health, so your afternoon dips are worry-free.

In a subtropical climate like Florida, a pool is a tool for survival. Summer heat is challenging enough, but add to that the cloying humidity that’s so close, you almost feel like you could squeeze water directly from the air in your fist. The solace of a sparkling pool can combat utter stupefaction and heat stroke, and part of the fun is keeping it safe:

DRAINS

The suction is strong; jewelry, hair, and even your swimsuit can get pulled in and trap a swimmer under the surface. Make a list of safety rules prohibiting jewelry and other items and be sure everyone understands them. Clean drains regularly and keep a pair of scissors where you can get to them quickly.

WATER CHEMICALS

Water quality is essential; improper chemical balance can cause earaches, skin irritations, and even burns. Learn how to properly measure and maintain the correct PH level, and store your chemicals in a safe place away from children and pets.

FIRST AID KIT

With all the fun of cavorting in the pool comes the occasional bump or scrape, so it’s always a good idea to have a kit stocked with necessities like bandages, calamine lotion, sunscreen, antiseptic wipes, and antibiotic ointment.

David Knight & Dryer Vent Wizard

HOW DID YOU LAND AT DRYER VENT WIZARD AND IN GAINESVILLE?

Like many, I spent the pandemic working from home. I was a white-collar crime investigator at that time. There came a breaking point where I simply could not take another day trapped inside, away from people. I decided to retire for the second time from law enforcement. I knew I wanted to work for myself, found a good franchise coach and we began vetting out opportunities. After much searching, I decided on Dryer Vent Wizard. With this company, I could do the work by myself to begin without the need for employees or a storefront.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR LIFE?

Thankfully, my schedule is very manageable and I have more time for my family than I’ve ever had.

DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?

I have several. One that made a large impact on my personal and business life is Ray Cappola. Ray trained me for DVW in Chattanooga, TN. He is a shining example of someone walking out the Christian faith and reflecting that in his work.

KITCHEN REMODEL BY KAELYN SCHMIDT DESIGN

White painted kitchen cabinetry will never go out of style; the crisp white color brightens any kitchen and the classic look will stand the test of time. A recent design trend can be seen as an accent color on the island cabinetry. The kitchen island is also getting larger as it is the heart of the kitchen where families tend to gather.

In this kitchen remodel, we enlarged the island by adding extra storage and changed the shape to fill the space and allow for more seating. The pop of blue makes a statement and creates a focal point while the white subway backsplash tile enhances the classic design.

Great reasons to go to the pool this summer

Summer and swimming pools go hand in hand and here are some great reasons why going to the pool in the summer is so great!

Swimming is great exercise. You get to have fun with your family and friends or make new friends by taking a swimming class to be safe for the summer. Swimming has a “low impact” on the body and the health benefits include, mobility, flexibility, and physical strength just to name a few. Being around a pool and water not only relaxes the body, but also the mind and studies show that regular aerobic exercise, like swimming, improves your sleep quality.

To make things even better our local community pools are affordable and offer discounted rates for memberships. So don’t miss out on the three local community pools that the City of Gainesville owns and operates: The Dwight

H. Hunter Pool (Northeast Pool),  H. Spurgeon Cherry Pool (formally Westside Pool, recently reopened) and Mickle Pool.

Pool passes, valid for six months, are available and are good at all three pool locations. To purchase a pass and learn pool hours, call the City of Gainesville Parks & Recreation at  352-334-5067, Mon.–Fri., 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
