June is here! The official month of Summer, and the month for celebrating Fathers. Have you ever wondered, “Do fathers and father figures matter? Let’s start with the simple answer — the importance of a father or father figure is tremendous! Fathers make countless differences in their homes and family. How much impact you decide to make as a dad is entirely up to you!
As I reflect on fatherhood this month, here are just a few of the ways dads can build up their homes:
• A father’s strength can be powerful
• A dad’s words can be fueling and inspirational
• Hugs from a dad can be deeply comforting
• A dad’s smile can instill joy and confidence
• Time with a dad can be fun and productive
• A dad’s guidance can be life-changing and foundational
• A father’s correction can be life-saving and life-giving
• Adventures with a dad can be exciting and memorable
As far as fathers go, I have been doubly blessed to have two fathers and my father-in-law (for many years), in my life for which I am so very grateful for. I also am thankful for my wonderful husband of almost 31 years and all of the amazing male family members in our lives, who all will be forever in our hearts.
This month we are honoring men and their contributions to the betterment of our community. We’re highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard, and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we appreciate you all so much and applaud you! The lasting impact that you’re making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.
Let your father or a father figure in your life know how much he matters to you. And if you are a dad, let us be the first to say - thank you. You are invaluable to the people who know and need you as well as the community around you. Happy Father’s Day! And see you around town!

1. HOW DID YOU LAND AT RED DOOR HOMES OF FLORIDA? I decided to open a (Red Door Homes of Florida) RDH location after many years in the custom home world and seeing a need for a much simpler way to build and buy new homes.
2. WHAT WAS THE DEFINING MOMENT WHEN YOU KNEW YOU WERE IN THE RIGHT BUSINESS?
I knew I was in the right business the first time I saw the smile of my first client as we did the final walkthrough of their dream home. I do what I do simply for a smile from our owners when their dream becomes real.
3. WHAT DRIVES YOU?
My duty for success as a husband, father, son, and business owner pushes me to never stop and continue to go above and beyond with is the expected norm in our society. When I’m not providing for my family or chasing my dreams, I am with the family which includes my wife and 3 young children. We are either serving on the softball/baseball fields or at our church.
4. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY LIFE?
I don’t do balance. I believe the notion of work/life balance is a recipe for failure. I just live my life. Let me explain, my family comes first, if there is an event that involves the family it doesn’t matter the time or day, that’s what I’m doing. Likewise, if something is needed for work I do it, regardless of the time or day.
My life is my life, it’s all one. If you try to separate these, I believe they all suffer because you feel guilty if you’re doing one or the other at a time when you think you should be doing another. Therefore, we begin to separate them, and they both suffer, and you’re not happy with either of them or yourself.
5. DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
Yes, I’ve had several mentors. I believe in having mentors as well as mentoring others in their journeys that you have experience in.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? “You only fail if you quit.”

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROST PHOTOGRAPHYsure to check the middle and inside of your tread. Any uneven wear should be addressed. If the middle of the tire is more worn than the inside/outside edges, reduce tire pressure. If inside/outside edges of tire are more worn, add air pressure.
2) Fluid check
While the heat of summer has not burdened us quite yet, Floridians are still preparing to pack up and hit the roads all summer long and escape the heat. In the chaos of preparation, there are basics you want to check.
1) Tire check.
a. Tire pressure – For passenger vehicles, we do not recommend inflating more than 40psi, generally we set our customer’s tires to 36-38psi. Anything more than 40psi will cause “roller skate” feeling while driving at highway speeds. Try not to let tire pressure go below 32psi. Mobile inflation devices that operate on battery are available on Amazon to make sure you always have access to an inflation tool if you catch a nail or screw to get to a service shop. For commercial vehicles, exceptions apply so pay attention to the tire sidewall for maximum psi.
b. Tread – do not trust the outside tread! Most of the weight of the vehicle is on the inside of the tire due to suspension engineering. Make
a. Oil – some modern vehicles do not have a dipstick, but do have an electronic oil indicator. If this is the case, scroll through your dash monitor and find the oil level. Always make sure to check the oil level once the vehicle is warm as fluids expand with heat. Ideally, the level should be right in the middle of the MIN and MAX on the dipstick.
b. Coolant – always check before turning on the vehicle as this gets to boiling temperature and can seriously hurt you. Most coolant tanks have a “stick” inside the tank to check fluid level. But just fill up with proper color coolant (blue/ pink/green/yellow). If you are low on coolant and do not have access to coolant. Water can work temporarily.
c. Wipers / Washer fluid – depending on where your travel plans are, washers and wipers can be a necessity to clean dust and pollen off the windshield, and make sure you keep your eyes on the road ahead. Not much worse than being in a bad rainstorm with bad wipers!
3) As always, if you notice anything off with drivability or any warning lights, we recommend scheduling a visit with a service professionals AT LEAST 1 WEEK PRIOR to your departure date to allow adequate time for you and the service center to take care of any urgent needs. Star Import .
June is when it’s just pleasant enough to enjoy subtropical, sunny glory – but not so hot as to send us hibernating to the AC vents (that comes in July). It’s the Season of the Backyard, the Time of Dads, Brothers and Beer Brethren in backyard kingdoms, and we have suggestions for adding extra sparkle.
For the passionate golfer, nothing’s better than a small (or large, depending on the level of devotion) practice green right outside. If you need a mental health break or just want to practice your swing, this is a perfect little corner to tuck into and enjoy. Plus, it adds a little extra character to brighten up the space.

Who doesn’t love a good bonfire? Fire pits serve as a cozy inclusion to any backyard – and the good news is they don’t have to break the bank! With a variety of materials and sizes to consider, a fire pit adds a great gathering space with a modest amount of effort. It’s always wise to do your research before choosing materials, but we did find some great ideas for do-it-yourself fire pits to inspire!

While the image of a man at the grill may be a bit of a stereotype, that doesn’t mean it’s untrue. Backyard grilling is a staple of summer, and outdoor kitchens make it even easier and more fun to have a nosh in the great outdoors. Again, you might not relish the idea of dealing with a contractor, so you might find some more manageable options here:

Of The Things We Think, Say Or Do
ARTICLE BY VARIOUS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROST PHOTOGRAPHY
1. HOW DID YOU GET CONNECTED TO SUSTAINABLE CAMBODIA?
My wife, Susan Mastin, and I were co-founders, but our involvement included some serendipity. We were college-age during the Vietnam War era and aware of the Khmer Rouge genocide. So when a Gainesville friend started a small village school in Cambodia, we wanted to help. After a couple of years, it became clear that the families couldn’t keep their kids in school because of dysentery, malnutrition and the need for them to carry water and work in the fields. So we formally started the nonprofit and established our founding policy that we would have no international staff or overhead, relying solely on Cambodians to do the onsite work. We expanded the program to include village development, wells, latrines and sustainable agriculture. Then we got Rotary involved, and it grew from our Gainesville club to more than 100 Rotary clubs around the world. And now, 19 years later, more than 10,000 Cambodian families have changed their lives, creating a sustainable quality of life for their children and neighbors. It’s been quite a ride.
2. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE IN THE RIGHT PLACE?
I’d say that happens every time we’re onsite, where we’re surrounded by hundreds of enthusiastic, smiling children in our schools, all eager to learn. It doesn’t get any better than that.
3. DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
Maybe not what others would call a typical mentor. But my wife has boundlessly sweet and loving energy, which has helped guide my life. And the Rotary 4-Way
Test has been a guide for both of us. It goes like this: Of everything we think, say or do... 1) Is it the truth? 2) Is it fair to all concerned? 3) Will it build goodwill and better friendships? and 4) Will it be beneficial to all concerned? That guide has been instrumental every day, both in Sustainable Cambodia and in my business and personal life.
4. HOW HAS ROTARY IMPACTED YOU?
Of course, that 4-Way Test has been impactful. But being connected to all the Rotarians in our community, and so many thousands of Rotarians around the world, all of them focused on helping to create a better world for all… that’s been quite an inspiration.
5. DO YOU HAVE A SAYING OR INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE THAT YOU LEAD YOUR LIFE/ ORGANIZATION/SELF WITH?
I’ve always loved Ben Franklin’s guidance that “Well done is better than well said.” And Martin Luther King Jr’s “Life’s most urgent question: What are you doing for others?”
6. INSIGHTS FOR OTHERS THAT WANT TO SERVE OTHERS OR DO MORE IN OUR COMMUNITY AND AROUND THE WORLD?
Our Rotary logo is “Service Above Self”. But that doesn’t mean “selfless service”. What I’ve learned is that once you get engaged in helping others, you get as much or more out of it as do those you are helping. It’s easy to think, “I don’t have time for that right now. I’ll do it later.” But I would say don’t delay. Start now. The benefits far outweigh the investment of your time.

1. HOW DID YOU GET CONNECTED TO THE SOUTHERN SUDAN HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATION (SSHCO)?
I am a “lost boy” from South Sudan. I was orphaned at 6 years old and spent 10 years in a refugee camp in Kenya. I had no formal education and lived my life off survival skills. In 2001, the Samaritas sponsored me and over 3,889 other Sudanese refugees to come to the United States. Me and two other “lost boys” landed in Michigan and in foster care. It was a new beginning for me. Once I settled in America, I started questioning myself. I had a home to stay at and ate 3 times a day, what is my purpose? I decided to educate myself, so then I could go back to South Sudan and help those who didn’t get a chance to come to the United States. I graduated high school and went to college. In 2008, while in college, I and a childhood friend and another “lost boy”, Lual Deng Awan formed the Southern Sudan Healthcare Organization (SSHCO).
2. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE IN THE RIGHT PLACE?
The moment I stepped off the plane in America.
3. HAVE YOU HAD MENTORS?
I have had so many mentors. Getting my Ph.D. in Environmental & Global Health at the University of Florida (UF) really taught me the importance of mentors. My foster mom, Jane White, is a great mentor. She was always there for me, supporting my goals, and providing a sense of connection. Other mentors, I feel, came into my life at different times and different seasons and helped me all along my path.
4. DO YOU HAVE A QUOTE THAT DIRECTS YOUR LIFE?
Mathew 6: 33: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
5. WHAT IMPACT HAS ROTARY HAD IN YOUR LIFE?
In 2020 a member of the Gainesville Rotary Club anonymously paid for my membership. I had a chance to see the impact of what they do, not only in our community but around the world. I then had an opportunity to go to the Rotary International Conference, in Houston, TX in 2022. I also had a chance to meet the President of Rotary International and I immediately knew my values aligned with Rotary’s 4 Way Test. In May 2023, I will be one of the keynote speakers at the Rotary District 6970 Conference & Training in St Augustine, Florida.
6. ANY INSIGHTS FOR OTHERS WHO WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THEIR COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD?
Know your calling, your purpose, your skill set. There are so many needs locally and globally, and if you can, travel and go somewhere, I promise when you do, you will never come back the same.
Dr. Jacob Atem, CEO and Co-Founder of SSHCO, leads an organization that takes a comprehensive approach to addressing the challenges faced by South Sudan. SSHCO’s six pillars, which encompass health, education, food security, economic development, community, and emergency response, form the basis of its holistic approach. If you are interested in learning more about SSHCO or becoming involved with its efforts, you can visit its website at https://sshco.org/.

1. HOW DID YOU LAND AT SISSET’S AND IN GAINESVILLE?
I’m originally from Gainesville and my parents live here. When I returned for visits we always made stops at Sisset’s.
2. DO YOU HAVE A “WHY” MOMENT? WHEN DID YOU KNOW THIS JOURNEY/BUSINESS WAS FOR YOU?
ARTICLE BY JAY MCGRIFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY PROST PHOTOGRAPHYWe had been trying to coordinate opening a second location for a few years. It was all put on hold with the virus. We were in town for a visit and went to Sisset’s. A short conversation on one of our regular trips to the store got the ball rolling. It was at a time when some things had changed for me professionally and I was trying to figure out the next steps in life. We love the store, love the products, and love the staff.
"Take one day at a time"
3. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY/PERSONAL LIFE?
It was a little rough at first, getting our feet wet, learning all the vendors, learning the ropes, and starting in the holidays. Now, with a few months under our belts, we’re doing better at a balance, trying to take time to get out and explore all the wonderful events, locations and restaurants Gainesville and the surrounding areas have to offer. We set aside 1-2 times a week to explore something new.
4. DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
My mentor in this experience is the person who made the store what it is. I’ve learned everything from Melissa who has made the store what it is. I brought my past customer service experience and applied it to Melissa’s philosophy in order to maintain the excellent customer service Sisset’s is known to offer the customers.
5. DO YOU HAVE A SAYING OR INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE THAT YOU LEAD YOUR LIFE/BUSINESS/SELF WITH?
I don’t have one that stands out strongly. I do like the saying “Take One day at a time” which I think most people are saying nowadays since the world has changed with COVID.

Why
1. HOW DID YOU LAND AT MR. ROOTER/GAINESVILLE?
I was General Manager at Mr. Rooter in Tallahassee for 5-1/2 years. My wife is originally from Gainesville, and the territory was open for purchase. So we thought it was the perfect opportunity.
2. CAN YOU NAME ONE DEFINING MOMENT WHEN YOU KNEW YOU WERE IN THE RIGHT PLACE?
There are so many! But, to answer your question, it’s the Mr. Rooter system that got me hooked. The customer service is hands down the best I’ve ever seen in 25 years of plumbing.
3. WHAT ELSE DRIVES YOU? God, family and golf.
4. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY LIFE?
We try to have all our employees off on time daily for a great work/life balance.
5. DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
My cousin Brent was my mentor. I started as a plumbing helper with him when I was 14. I worked each summer of high school. I learned almost everything from him.

When people find out that Mitch Glaeser retired on September 17, 2017, they laugh. A man who declared to live life differently on that day moving forward definitely has, that’s for sure.
Removing computers, the internet, and even alarm clocks from home, he now lives a life of passion. Driven by seeing others thrive, he now focuses on building the world’s largest sustainable mixed-use development called San Felasco Tech City, with on-site production for on-site consumption of energy via solar.
In less than 4 years the 82-acre complex hosts over 50 companies to call home and is still growing rapidly. Every kind of ‘tech’ can be found at SFTC, including ancillary businesses Daft Cow Brewery, Beaker and Flask Wine Company, and Education Station Pre-School. This fall, an Okito America will be added for after-school care and Harvest Thyme Café in spring of 2024.
Boasting 270,000 square feet of space dedicated to ‘tech’ companies, it also will add over 250 homes as development continues, including community centers, basketball, volleyball, tennis court, walking trails. and a swimming pool.
If this is retirement, it sure has the makings of a very impressive chapter for a man following his passion.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY TOP HOG & FAMILY
"Whether we decide to do something or give into the fear of failure it's up to us."Photo 1: Mother’s Day with Mom, Carol Sheftic. Photo 2: Mom & Dad (Carole & Dan Sheftic) and Mike and the pups.
I accepted a position as the Kitchen Manager for Stonewood Grill about 20 years ago so that I could be closer to my family. I did some small BBQ catering events for friends and family, also. My close friend, Merrisa Eller, and I started brainstorming ideas for a restaurant that we could open together. Since our BBQ was such a hit, we focused on developing the Top Hog BBQ concept. When we found the Jonesville location, we knew it was meant to be our first restaurant. We knew we would be living there while we were building the business and it was close to where we lived and had a need for a BBQ restaurant.
2. DID YOU ANTICIPATE SO MUCH SUCCESS?
You always hope, right? My plan was always to expand and open multiple locations but that’s the optimist in me. We put our hearts and souls into Top Hog BBQ. We love and appreciate being allowed to be part of the community. Our guests have been very supportive and we would never have been able to do a second location in the midst of everything that was going on in the world if it wasn’t for the overwhelming support of the community.
3. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WERE IN THE RIGHT “PLACE”?
I joke that I started to cook because my Mom was a bad cook. In reality, I would say it was more that my Mom was very busy and had other passions. She is an artist and her arts and crafts business took all of her time and energy. Cooking was not a priority. But I always loved food. And my mother encouraged me to embrace that love. My parents would let me write ny own grocery list and cook whatever I
wanted for the family. I was brought up in an environment where I was encouraged to be independent and embrace my creativity. I learned at an early age to appreciate the great feeling that comes from knowing that I created a great meal for somebody. To this day I love cooking for people and seeing the expression on their faces as they eat something that I created for them.
4. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY/ PERSONAL LIFE?
That’s a great question. I don’t. My daughter is grown up and happily living her life with her family. My work is my family. Every one of my guests and employees are like family members. So Top Hog is very personal for me. When you own 2 restaurants it’s very hard to set aside any time for yourself without feeling like you’re neglecting your “baby”. I do try to take a day for myself every week to relax and reenergize but I’ve found that being in the restaurant when it is all flowing, all the employees are enjoying their jobs, and all the guests have smiles on their face is more revitalizing than anything else that I can think of.
5. DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
I’ve had several mentors throughout my career. The one thing that I think they all taught me was that you MUST enjoy what you do. Restaurants are hard businesses to run, with high turnover, long hours and short profits. You do not work in restaurants to get rich. For me it’s the pride of knowing that people want to eat the food that I’ve cooked and the feeling of accomplishment that comes from knowing that the business that I’ve created is employing so many people and helping make our community a better place.
“Fear is a choice. Life is tough and there are many things that can deter us from doing what we want to do. No success comes without the risk of failure.”
I grew up in Folkston, Georgia. A small town just across the Florida/Georgia Line. I met my wife while on active duty and she is a 3rd generation Gainesville Native. We discovered we were expecting and I transitioned from active duty to the Florida air national guard so we could be surrounded by family in Gainesville as we welcomed our firstborn Indy.
My uncle has been a roofer for 20 years and I jumped right into roofing full-time when I got to Gainesville. We launched True Force Roofing because we felt the need for a roofing contractor built to serve this community with the customer being the focus. True Force Roofing is a customer service company that provides roofing solutions.
I knew entrepreneurship was for me at an early age. I joined the Air Force to serve this beautiful country. My passion is to serve others. As a business owner, I not only get to continue to serve the community, but I also get the opportunity to serve my team and lead them as they elevate both their personal and professional lives. I believe joy is accomplished only by what we give, not by what we take.
Prior to launching True Force Roofing I sat my friends and family down and had a discussion about my vision and what my intentions were with this company. I wanted to build a brand not just a company. As far as work/life balance, I do my best to spend quality time with my loved ones. However, I believe
entrepreneurship is a lifestyle not a career. I am showered with support and my support system knows I find joy in providing service. In the early stages, there is a large amount of sacrifice required to complete the vision successfully. I am honored by the support from the community and my family. The sacrifices made are simply about perspective.
4. DO YOU HAVE A MENTOR?
I have a large list of mentors. I break the business down into departments and seek mentorship specific to that department. I also gather information from multiple sources and develop an opinion of my own usually mixing the ideas and direction from multiple sources.
I do not have one mentor to point to as I am trying to accomplish something that’s never been done before in this industry.
5. DO YOU HAVE A SAYING OR INSPIRATIONAL QUOTE THAT YOU LEAD YOUR LIFE AND BUSINESS WITH?
We have a few that all focus on one thing- Grace. “Love people” is hanging in our office in huge letters. It is typed into our family group chat daily. It’s a constant reminder to love people and give abundant grace to others. As people, we never know what others are going through and our act of kindness or understanding in a moment of adversity could be the only light that shines on that person for that moment. We have the opportunity to impact others through commerce and we consider it a privilege. As a team, we deliver the highest versions of ourselves when we are showing grace and loving people. We are also able to lift others to their highest version when we show grace and pour out positive energy.
“We are also able to lift others to their highest version when we show grace and pour out positive energy.”

In addition to Cryo Pain Relief and Infrared Sauna sessions, our members have their pick of compression therapy and vibration training to increase circulation, as well! We invite you to see what our Restore Membership is all about!

Tired of the same old date night options? Surprise your partner with a fun, romantic evening of ballroom dancing! Don’t worry if you don’t know how to dance! Jacqueline Valdez teaches easy choreography that will have you dancing the night away in no time.
Gliding around the dance floor with the rhythm of the beat, this heart-healthy exercise improves your mood, reduces stress and builds endurance. And while remembering the steps and executing them accurately, your brain gets a great mental workout too.
Ballroom dancing also strengthens communication and cooperation between partners. As the lead, the man learns to guide his partner using gentle, non-verbal cues indicating when to turn, twirl and/or blend steps. Working together to get the moves down, couples are drawn together through lots of giggles and smiles.
The process of learning with Jacqueline is entertaining and uplifting. Make this your perfect date night for both you and your partner**! Get your dancing shoes on and feel the energy– it’s magical!
Suitable for everyone - beginner to advanced – millennial to Boomer – contact the Jacqueline Valdez Studio to schedule today!
