The Month of Love and Loving Local! I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn a bit between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday, and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season and eat lots of culinary confections! To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between, but if you’re looking for things to do this month, be sure to check out our Calendar of Events toward the back of the magazine. And regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you as we celebrate and highlight all that’s to love in our local community. While we hover between the “chill” of our true Winter (well for us anyway up here in North Central Florida), and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life - the ones in your home and on your street, in your neighborhood and in your community. “Love local” means our local residents, local businesses, those in our community whom we connect with - but it also means loving what and all who are near and dear to us - those right under our own roof especially. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. And we continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. Our hope is that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Happy February! What is MidiCi’s secret? We have imported two Mario Acunto Wood Fired ovens directly from Naples, Italy that cook between 950 and 1000 degrees. Cooking at this heat versus a lower temperature used by many other concepts greatly increases the skill needed to operate our ovens, but the high heat yields a far superior product, and stays true to our Neapolitan roots. Our menu has a variety of offerings, starters, fresh salads, specialty pizzas, handheld subs, and calzones. Vegetarian options range from pizza, calzones, subs, our salads, bruschetta, burrata caprese and our delicious garlic bread. We make two types of dough, regular or gluten-free, which are baked fresh daily, from scratch. And while we cannot divulge our “Gluten Free” recipe, we make it daily in house and never serve premade or frozen gluten free dough. “We’ve been told our gluten free dough is so good, guests can’t believe it’s actually gluten free.” In addition, all our pizzas are hand rolled which creates a “rustic” shape and look versus a normal pizza. Our ethos is to provide our guests with the best possible ingredients, made in house, and always fresh over frozen. Our concept has been called fast and fun, which is a great way to describe us. From time to time, you’ll see our kitchen team tossing pies to each other from across the kitchen, some can toss dough up to twenty feet in the air. While we don’t consider ourselves a “dinner and a show” concept, we do find many guests absorbed as they watch the kitchen work. It truly is a unique experience and a glimpse into a commercial kitchen that most never get to witness. Next time you stop in, feel free to bring your children and walk up to the kitchen and talk to our team. Most of them have been with us for three to four years and live and breathe pizza, and always enjoy sparking some joy with our younger guests. All Pizzas are not created equally!!! Making our products fresh daily combined with our Specialty Ovens provide our guests with a unique flavor profile that cannot be matched. CONTINUED >

The Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida is an oasis of calm, inspiration, and culture serving Gainesville since 1990. Its galleries highlight collections of Asian, African, modern and contemporary art and photography, creating an interactive, engaging public dialogue through education, exhibitions, and discussion. Developing and encouraging community involvement and participation is the mission of the museum – a multi-faceted local jewel waiting with open arms to be discovered. An ongoing installation is “Florida Impressions: Gift of Samuel H. and Roberta T. Vickers”, a celebration of one of the most comprehensive collections of Florida art and artists in the state. The more than fifty paintings cover themes ranging from scenic

Figuring out which colors work best on a skin tone can be a difficult business. Some professionals say to examine color by looking at your veins on your wrist. I promise it isn’t really that complicated. In fact, let me make it as simple as possible and nail down some specific colors that will flatter each skin tone.
DARK SKIN TONES: Try rich deep colors, like emerald greens, sapphire blues, royal purple, bright white and even pastels to look fabulous. Cobalt and bold colors look incredible against dark skin tones. Light yellows and pastels stand out too. Ruby and dark reds just sparkle, and you definitely get extra style points when you wear these colors. What about some olive green and khaki colors? Absolutely, and do not hold back on white. White is a fresh color that makes the skin glow. And for Spring 23? Try some bright pink because it couldn’t look better against dark skin tones! Just a hint, earth tones tend to be the least flattering colors.
MEDIUM SKIN TONES: Metallic, metallic, metallic. Medium skin tones can pull off metallic colors effortlessly. Shimmer from silver to copper. Want to continue that shimmer, try dove gray. If lighter skinned on the medium skin tone spectrum, opt for charcoal gray and for

darker tones try a very pale gray. Try some neon too. Neon is highlighter worthy and perfect for medium skin tones.

LIGHT & FAIR SKIN TONES: Baby blue, camel, and seafoam greens are amazing on light skin tones. Camel/tan creates an appealing contrast to light skin tones and the camel color always makes pieces look more expensive. Pale shades of green are just light enough to complement fair skin. Pale green also freshens up the look for spring, but don’t forget the white ankle boots to complete the look. The pale shade of blush also called millennial pink looks amazing on fair skin tones. What color is tailor made for fair skin tones? Lavender! In the end, the rule is that there are no rules to fashion, you can literally wear whatever colors you’d like, and I bet you’d look amazing in them. But, when we identify which colors flatter specific skin tones and brighten skin and hair, it will definitely help you feel more confident when getting ready for the day. And my greatest goal is for you to look vibrant, stand out in a crowd and radiate your beauty from the inside out.

WHEN WAS STAR IMPORT SERVICES ESTABLISHED? Star Import Service began in 1983 when Frank McGeown left the Buick-Miller dealership in Gainesville after a disagreement with the Management and Service Writers regarding the Technician pay. Management was implementing a pay schedule that reduced commission to technicians while increasing service writers commission. Frank vehemently disagreed with commission pay. Frank knew that it would incentivize quick work and a dog-eat-dog mentality between technicians. So, Frank began working out of his garage using cigarette containers as parts storage in the front room at his house, until he moved into a building with vehicle lifts.
WHY A MERCEDES BENZ ONLY SERVICE PROVIDER? Frank had only worked for Mercedes-Benz dealerships from when he returned from Vietnam in 1968 through 1983, when he started Star Import Services. Frank was named Mercedes-Benz of America Technician of the Year in 1979 and 1980.
WHEN DID STAR IMPORT SERVICES MOVE TO 2219 NW 71ST PLACE IN GAINESVILLE? We started in a 3 bay garage just across US-12 in 1983 and stayed there until 1988 when our current building was constructed. We own the property, and our building style is the most unique of any auto shop in the area allowing open entry into the garage where work is performed.
WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO CONTINUE YOUR GRANDFATHER’S BUSINESS AND MAKE IT YOUR OWN? In 2017, after moving to Gainesville from Colorado, Frank and I decided it was time for me to start implementing new strategies to grow the business and over time take over the business. I had great success. Then after I graduated from the University of Florida with a Master’s in Accounting in May 2021,
I had an opportunity to go to work for Deloitte in Atlanta. I thought about taking that leap, but due to COVID, our revenues dropped over 60% from 2019 to 2020. I knew if I headed to Atlanta, I would have left the business struggling and it may not have survived. Again, I had worked hard from 2017 to 2020 to grow the customer base and implement strategies at the firm. So, I stayed and took over the business. In May 2021, new customers made up 30% of our transactions. I knew if we made it to when people were driving normally again, the firms performance would be better than pre-COVID. Through Dec 2022 this theory has proven true as we’ve had our best calendar year since 2007.
HOW DOES THE STAR IMPORT SERVICES TEAM FIT INTO THIS SUCCESS? Josh is the focal point of our team; without him our firm would likely shut down. He has been a technician for us for approximately 20 years, and our Master Tech for 4 years. Josh was trained by Rick Reynolds who had 34 years of experience at our firm before retiring. Eric has been with us 5 years and his father previously worked for us in the 1990s. Our team is mission focused and understands each other’s roles which allows for efficient workflow.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY LIFE? Only hang out with them outside of work on holidays. Joking aside, it’s not always easy. My grandfather and I are very similar but being that we are on different points on the timeline in life, I tend to be more risk-seeking and he tends to be risk-averse so when it comes to business decisions it’s nice having a differing perspective. Sometimes though that can make progress difficult. Many ideas I’ve implemented since 2017 I had to do so through insubordination and then asking for forgiveness. If I did not do so I would likely be in Atlanta pursuing other things. In other words, you need Patience and Forgiveness.

Patience because in a small business with limited resources, outcomes do not happen overnight and Forgiveness in the sense that you may be wrong and say things that you would not say to a regular coworker.
WHO IS YOUR MENTOR? My mentor is my mother. She had me shortly before turning 19 and worked extremely hard to get her degree in Accounting after having me, and then providing for my brother, sister, and myself for many years thereafter.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE BUSINESS? My favorite part is waking up on Monday morning and knowing I am in control of the week and can have a serious impact on the outcome of the firm, my life, my team, and my customers lives. At Star Import Services, I love that I have control over the outcome of my time, which is something I never experienced working for others.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
HOW DID THE PANDEMIC AFFECT YOUR BUSINESS? The pandemic nearly destroyed our business. We were coming off 50% revenue growth from 2017-2019 and so at the very end of 2019 we hired an employee, purchased, and upgraded a lot of equipment, and were making those Capex decisions with the understanding that

“things” and our firms growth was going to continue. The first 90 days revenue in 2020 were double 2019 first quarter, and April 2020 revenues were 10% of the total (yes, a 90% revenue decrease) from the prior year. We did not return to pre-COVID revenues until Oct 2021. However, this ended up being a blessing because despite the revenue loss, we were still seeing new customers and have doubled our customer book since March 2020. Now that economic behaviors have returned mostly to normal, we are seeing the benefit of this perseverance.
IS THERE A MOMENT WHEN YOU KNEW YOUR WHY? I knew my why during COVID. I was coming in every day and seeing the business at arguably its slowest level ever and on the edge of some difficult decisions. It forced my hand to decide if I wanted to commit to the business and grow it to what it was (our highest revenue years were 1990-2007 when Frank was actively involved). As the only grandchild and last generational family member in the firm, I could not let such a huge part of my childhood fail without me trying and so far, it’s working.
