Happiest of Holidays to You All! The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is upon us, it’s truly the time of year to try to enjoy the real spirit of the holidays – being with loved ones, helping those in need, and reaching out to long lost friends and family. Having worked most of my life in “Corporate America” where we were often busier during this time of year, I personally never had the luxury of slowing down or even actually having a lot of holidays. But I always still felt the magic in the air and that special feeling that only this time of year can bring. Many of you here grew up in Northern areas with white, snowy Decembers, or at least with cold weather. I, myself, grew up in New Orleans, where snow was rare, but there’s still a crispness and freshness in the air like no other time of year, and our senses get overloaded in a wonderful way! The smells of turkeys roasting, cookies baking, and pumpkin spice candles, and the holiday songs and festivities, all add to the magic of the season. This month, we highlight not only the magic of the season but also all the many shows and events our area has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer, including where to find all the beautiful and festive holiday lights around town. We’ve compiled our Local Favorites–Holiday Edition Guide to local business’ products and services, and be sure to check out our comprehensive Calendar of Events, making your holiday shopping easier while supporting our local businesses. And in the true spirit of the season, let’s not forget to take care of those people and businesses that need a little extra. Our neighbors to the West are still rebuilding and recovering from the wrath of Hurricane Idalia and can really use our help. Also, our City Lifestyle National Giving Campaign is once again in full swing and calling for nominations for those in our communities who can use that extra help as well. Please take a minute to check this out and see how you can nominate any person or family in need. My hope for us all this season is to feel joy, kindness, love and peace. Time for a Car Check-Up Service Making sure you are ready to travel for the holiday season! Winter travels are close ahead and it’s important to check a few items before heading out of town to see family.

Always keep track of where you are for your service interval. It may be a great time to get that oil & filter service completed if you are close to the end of the service interval.
THE MOST IMPORTANT ITEMS ARE AS FOLLOWS: 1. Check and set tire pressure. Cooler months cause the air pressure in your tires to decrease. Be sure to set tire pressure - most vehicles should be set between 34-42psi. Set the tire pressure higher for long distance traveling as you will get slightly better gas mileage. 2. Check oil and coolant level. These are basic and most vehicles will tell you when these are low. However, a quick check around the coolant tank and radiator for white crystallization (dried coolant) and verifying oil level add a sense of security to your drive. Our oil is rated for 10,000 miles, but most automotive shops service vehicles every 3,000 - 5,000 miles.
3. In addition to decreasing tire pressure, cooler months cause random battery failures and performance issues, particularly with vehicles that sleep in the Sunshine State most of their lives. Be sure to allow your vehicle a few extra minutes to warm up in the morning before leaving, especially with family in colder regions. This will provide a healthy warm up to the engine and its systems. Always do this a week or two before your upcoming trip to allow adequate time for repairs on your vehicle if needed. Additionally, many service shops provide “Trip Checks” at little charge, that cover most safety items. starimport.com

What is Ham Bread? Ham Bread is a special bread filled with ham, olives, and raisins that is prepared especially during the Christmas season. According to Rafael Cartay in his Dictionary of Venezuelan Cuisine, it is the typical Venezuelan Christmas bread. Its incorporation into the Christmas menu occurred gradually since the first decade of the 20th century, when, it was created in a bakery in the center of Caracas. Cartay establishes it was made for the first time around 1905 in a Caracas bakery run by foreigners. Little by little it became established as a traditional bread.

Flour 2 1/4 cup Water 8.5 fl oz Yeast 1/4 oz Butter 3/4 cup Sugar 3/4 cup Eggs 2 Salt 2 1/2 teaspoons Smoked Ham 1 pound Bacon 1/2 cup Raisins 3/4 cup Olives 3/4 cup
First mix in a bowl a little water, sugar, 2 tsp of flour, and the yeast, cover, and let it rest for one hour in order to activate the yeast until it forms bubbles. Then mix the rest of the water, melted butter, one egg, and the rest of the flour until it creates a smooth dough. Let it rest in a covered bowl for 15 min. The ingredients are for two breads, before extending the dough the dough has to be divided into two pieces. Now extend the dough flat with a rolling pin and add on top the rest of the ingredients (ham, bacon, raisins, and olives), roll the dough, and let it rest covered with a kitchen towel for 2 hours over a tray with wax paper. Should wait until it is raised twice or three times its size. Preheat the oven to 330 F for 20 minutes. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance.
