Cultivating compassion OUR MISSION To Guide Veterinary Students in the Development of Basic Clinical Skills Through Service Learning and Community Outreach
The Veterinary Community Outreach Program The Veterinary Community Outreach Program at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine was the first of its kind in the country when it began in 2003. Approximately 125 UF veterinary students each year receive training in basic medical and surgical procedures. They also learn the challenges of veterinary practice in both community and shelter environments. The program provides local rescue groups and sheltering organizations with access to veterinary care that might not otherwise be available.

LIFESTYLE LETTER
August – Celebrating our Families and the Pets We Love As summer begins to wind down and we’re thrust into back to school planning, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending more time adventuring is exchanged for busier school and sports routines and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. And here in Gainesville, even though summer’s coming to an end, we still have some hot days in store for us, but we know we have a great fall ahead to look forward to as well. Our August issue is dedicated to the cutest members of our community— our kids and our pets. They both have a way of making us feel special and their loyalty and sense of wonder is refreshing. In this issue, we take you into the lives of some of our local business owners, and the pets (and horses!) they cherish. As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to take some time to relax and spend time with your family and the fur babies you love. Happy August! And see you around town!

FOR THE LOVE OF HORSES “A LOVELY HORSE IS ALWAYS AN EXPERIENCE.... IT IS AN EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE OF THE KIND THAT IS SPOILED BY WORDS.” BERYL MARKHAM

P E T F R IE N D LY | SPORTS + RE CRE ATI ON
JENNIFER CASH AND HER DALES PONY ELLIE HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE COMMUNITY? I moved here in 1999 to attend UF. I obtained a degree in Animal Science with an equine specialization. I have been around and loved horses since I was a child and wanted a career in the horse industry. I did my internship at a local thoroughbred farm in Micanopy. I met my husband there and we built a life here in Micanopy // Gainesville.
HOW DID YOU LAND WITH AN INTEREST IN DALES PONIES? The farm across the road from us was for sale for a long time. A couple from England bought the farm and imported a small herd of Dales Ponies. I had never heard of the breed. I began riding her
Ellie & Jennie
Dales Ponies and instantly fell in love with the breed. They are a large drafty type pony that has a wonderful calm disposition and they are a great all-around horse. The couple has since sold the farm and moved back to England, but they left a small pocket of breeding ponies with a few of the locals who also grew to love the breed. I bought my mare as a foal and have had her for almost 5 years now.
FAVORITE STORY ABOUT YOUR PONIES. I was there the day Ellie (my mare) was bred. I rode her mom when she was pregnant with her and I saw her within 24 hours of her birth. I bought her when she was 2 months old, though I did not bring her home until 9 months at the time of her weaning from her mom. I have been around Ellie her whole life!
IS THERE A CONNECTION BETWEEN ORKIN AND YOUR LOVE FOR YOUR PONIES? I never could have imagined I would be running an Orkin Branch. I always pictured myself having a job in the horse industry, but Orkin is a family business and it has allowed me to have much more freedom (financially and otherwise) with my horses that I treasure.
IF SOMEONE WAS LOOKING TO GET A PONY, WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND? Do the research on the breed. Understand the breed. Get connected with the Dales Pony Society and with our local chapter here in the States, the Dales Pony Conservancy North America. Always register your horse with the Dales Pony Society. We are trying to breed these ponies and bring awareness to the breed. They are on the critically endangered list and there are a mere 300 ponies in the US and less than 3,000 worldwide.
QUOTE OR FAVORITE MESSAGE THAT YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE BY OR THAT EXPLAINS WHO YOU ARE AND YOUR JOURNEY. My love of horses has brought me to many different places and met some incredible people. I always say I met my favorite people in the Barn. (I met my 2 best friends as well as my husband in a barn). LOL!! The Dales pony is one of the United Kingdom's native mountain and moorland pony breeds. The breed is known for its strength, hardiness, stamina, courage, intelligence, and good disposition. With population numbers low the breed is considered "critical" by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust and "threatened" by The Livestock Conservancy. CONTINUED >

VALERIE DAILEY WAS A YOUNGSTER IN KINDERGARTEN WHEN SHE GOT HER FIRST PONY IN A NEGOTIATED DEAL WITH HER PARENTS: IF SHE MADE STRAIGHT A’S, SHE COULD HAVE ONE. THAT WAS MOTIVATION ENOUGH FOR HER. “His name was Red,” she recalls. “And the most important thing I learned from him was how not to get scraped off the saddle. He loved running back to the barn and getting as close to the side of it as he could to try and literally rub me off his back.” She laughs about it now. “He was ornery, but staying in the saddle is a valuable lesson to learn.” Her second horse, Yankee Doodle Dandy, was a half-Arabian, half Quarter Horse who was much friendlier and more patient. “He really taught me the basics of riding and gave me confidence,” she says. “He was the first horse I showed at 4-H. He was my friend all the way from 3rd Grade to when I graduated from college. I have so many great memories of him.” As any horse person will tell you, there is nothing secret between a rider and a horse. These animals are much more than simply pets or breeding livestock. Humans have special bonds with our animal companions, and each one is unique and singular. What they share in common is that we come to see our animals as individuals in their own rights – they have intuition, empathy, and agency, regardless of the fact that they have four feet and fur; that part is irrelevant.

Valerie’s early love of horses evolved into an active commitment in helping facilitate and develop the equestrian industry; she’s been a knowledgeable thoroughbred breeder since 1992 and currently has 20 horses and 8 broodmares at her farm. Her dedication to the horse community and its ongoing improvement have seen her collaborate with other breeders, industry professionals and entrepreneurs, advocating for equine and agricultural development in the region, and just last year she was named the first female president of the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association. Winston Churchill once said that there was “something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a person”, and generally you’ll find most horse people agree with that. If you have a good relationship, a horse can teach you not only how to become a good rider – but in very real terms, they can teach lessons about motivation, commitment, trust – and even letting go. Just this past year, Valerie and her daughter Sam relocated Mel, a beloved 20 year-old Quarter Horse to the therapeutic riding program Stirrups n’ Strides, because they knew they wouldn’t be able to ride him as often as they used to. “We knew we would miss him, but it wasn’t about us.” Valerie explains. “It had to be about him and what he needed. Mel’s a people person; even at his age, he’s so smart and energetic and curious. We knew he’d be happy there. You do everything you can for a friend to make sure they’re happy.”

HarborChase of Ga i ne s v i l le Unvei l s New Renovat ion WITH A SIDE OF EXCEPTIONAL HOSPITALITY
The demand for quality senior living communities is growing exponentially. Beyond the expectations of excellent care, seniors today – our parents and grandparents – are also searching for communities that are tailor-made for their specific lifestyle. They want freedom and better choices for dining, events, and socialization. What they don’t want is to sacrifice a lifestyle they have become accustomed to – and rightfully so. Harbor Retirement Associates, the hospitality management company for all HarborChase communities, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The celebration included the renovation of HarborChase of Gainesville, revealing their continued commitment to the creation of exceptional senior living communities. Located on Fort Clarke Boulevard, a tangible spirit of warmth and hospitality is apparent the moment you enter the newly renovated lobby. Just off the main lobby is the new Counter-Offer, a casual bistro and delightful meeting place open 9am – 3pm daily, serving breakfast and lunch sandwiches, salads, and sweets. Residents, families, and guests are welcomed.

O PE N H OU SE | A RTS + CULTURE
Additional renovations include The Chefs Studio for live cooking demonstrations and classes, Fusion Lounge offering beer, wine, and appetizers during happy hour each afternoon at 3pm, and Zest, the private dining room reserved for special celebrations and prixfixe, five-course gourmet dinners on select Friday and Saturday evenings by reservation only. The updated salon and spa is managed by a dedicated cosmetologist, a unique amenity for most other senior living communities. In true HarborChase style, the Gainesville community welcomed more than 150 guests last May for their grand re-opening and a Taste of HarborChase featuring culinary delicacies prepared by their Executive Chef, live music, cocktails, and personal tours of the renovations. For more information about HarborChase of Gainesville dining opportunities, or to schedule a personalized tour, call 352-332-4505 or visit HarborChase.com.

“A PORTION OF OUR PROFITS GOES TO ANIMAL RESCUE AND MY #1 PASSION REMAINS ANIMAL RESCUE.”
Melissa Glikes: The Heart of Sisset’s... A Fun Twist on the Home & Patio A homeless man and his very young pup stood in the median daily on the southwest part of town. I would see them as I was coming and going to and from the plaza, me handing out a pack of crackers that I had purposely put in the car for him. The puppy seemed happy, always playing, and tugging at his pants. I was somewhat comforted knowing that the puppy was with his person 24/7, but still how was he to pay for the puppy’s food. One afternoon after getting groceries, I drove past the median I noticed the puppy was lethargic and had lost hair on his tail specifically. I proceeded home, put by groceries away and got back in my car to head back to the plaza. I ended up sitting down with this man and his adorable puppy in the median, him in his ragged clothes, me in velvet pants and a wool sweater. He proceeded to tell me that he was going to California within the next few days and needed to find a home for Mikey. The rest is history as they say and I took home what was going to be THE best rescue dog of my life. I’ve lost count as to how many dogs I’ve brought home and kept or fostered over the years, but all have been wonderful and somehow seemed to know that they had been “saved”. They all came with a story and for me that story usually started with them

being cared for-or not-by a residentially challenged person whose trust I gained by giving out dog food, collars, leashes whatever was needed. I, and others besides me, have spent countless hours talking to people about their animals in Tent City (now defunct), in other wooded areas where homeless people may be camping at GRACE and even near bridges or intersections where they “fly a sign” asking for handouts. Making sure that the pets were spayed/ neutered, up to date on vaccinations and, most of all cared for was my absolute goal. I can’t thank the shelter medicine program at the University of Florida (now VCOP or Veterinary Community Outreach Program), Home Van Pet Care and St Francis Pet Clinic for all of their amazing help getting these hundreds of animals vetted and, at times, rehomed. Additionally, my experience with the area’s many rescue groups has been nothing less than humbling. My past also includes several years as the Director of the Alachua County Humane Society, working as a supervisor with Alachua County Animal Services, and working at the UF Shelter Medicine Program. Now that I have a business, Sisset’s A Fun Twist on the Home & Patio, my time is limited. That said, a portion of our profits goes to animal rescue and my number one passion remains animal rescue.

A NEW VENTURE IN SCENTHOUND
T H E P I Z Z U R R O F A M I LY F O U N D
Joseph and Kathryn Pizzurro
P E T CA R E | LOCAL SERV I CE S
ARTICLE BY KATHRYN PIZZURO
With an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania, 30 years of corporate business experience, and a childhood of caring for pets from dogs to horses, Joseph Pizzurro found a new venture in Scenthound. “For years, Kathryn and I spoke about starting a business together. We found Scenthound, and were drawn to its mission, and purpose, which we could not wait to bring to north-central Florida,” says Pizzurro. The couple shares a strong love of Gainesville and its surrounding neighborhoods. The vibrant, active community is filled with families, retirees, and
career-minded singles that share a common thread – they love their furry friends. “Certainly, the past few years have shown us how our pets bring us muchneeded love and happiness. Educating pet parents and helping them with routine, proactive care for their furry family members helps all of us stay healthy and happy as well.” Scenthound provides wellness-focused dog grooming services in their Haile location and will soon be opening a second in Millhopper. Ocala locations are planned for 2023.
