With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is America's most common cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Gainesville Dermatology experts recommend the daily use of a broadspectrum sunscreen, as this protects the skin against harmful UVA and UVB rays. With an SPF minimum rating of 35, you can protect against sunburn which reduces the risk of skin cancer, helps prevent photodamage and photoaging, or premature skin aging.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

June Gentlemen's Issue The month of June is many things – the official beginning of summer – yes, hard to fathom for us Floridians that summer is just now officially starting - family vacations and getaways for some of us, and of course, Father’s Day. An inspirational man has the incredible power and privilege of shaping and mentoring the young people in their lives to grow and mature in a multitude of ways. Whether they are a father, a coach, an uncle or a boss, being a role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, or someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but who inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives. As far as fathers go, I have been doubly blessed to have two fathers in my life for which I am so very grateful for. I also am thankful for my wonderful husband of almost 30 years, my two brothers, my son-in-law, nephews, many cousins, uncles, and a lot of male family members no longer with us but forever in our hearts. This month we are honoring men and their contributions to the betterment of our community. We’re highlighting men who put themselves second, work hard, and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we appreciate you all so much and applaud you! The lasting impact that you’re making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. As you read through these pages, you’ll find some great Man Cave ideas, and be sure to check out our Father’s Day Gift guide, complete with unique and thoughtful gift-giving suggestions for any man in your life, and in all different price ranges. Thank you to all the men who do so much for us personally and for this community. Enjoy and celebrate the men in your lives. Happy Father’s Day! And see you around town!

Chris Doering

DID YOU EVER IMAGINE HAVING SIMULTANEOUS CAREERS? No. After the NFL, I knew I wanted to return to Gainesville to raise my family, just wasn’t sure what was next professionally. The prospect of Chris Doering Mortgage presented itself and I ran with it. At the same time, I wanted to stay involved with sports so I worked in different broadcasting roles, which ultimately led to the opportunity with ESPN.

HOW DID THE MORTGAGE LENDING ROLE HAPPEN? A friend had a similiar business and convinced me it would be a great fit for me and Gainesville. The industry is challenging and competitive, attributes I enjoyed as an athlete. I opened in 2007 right before the market crash, so learned the industry when times were lean. In hindsight, it was a good thing.

WAS BEING A SPORTS COMMENTATOR A NATURAL FIT? My degree is Telecommunications from UF and sports background certainly helped prepare me. From there I tried to learn from all the amazing people I’ve been fortunate enough to work with and around.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY? I spend as much time as I can with my kids and family. We have busy lives but always make time to be together. The rest of my time is spent with my work family, which is just that, family. I couldn’t juggle both careers without all of them.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU LEARNED RECENTLY THAT SURPRISED YOU? That I don’t mind difficult conversations! Our industry presents challenges and deals with intimate details about people and their finances. By having honest conversations with our clients, we’re able to work together to solve problems.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE YOUR KIDS? Believe in yourself. Nothing I have accomplished, happened the way I would have planned. But I kept pushing, and ultimately achieved my goals. And because it wasn’t easy, it was so much more fulfilling.

Eric Godet

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO WORK FOR THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? I never saw myself in the roll of President/CEO of the Greater Gainesville Chamber. In August of 2018, when I was asked to step in as Interim President/CEO, I was excited to help. I realized not only was I drawn to what the Chamber was doing, I enjoyed working in the Chamber. I was excited to accept the position as President/CEO when asked in December 2018. DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER PASSIONS? My faith is a huge part of my life. As a small child I wanted to be a Priest. Meeting my lovely wife Yvette changed that, but my faith has never wavered. I serve on the Finance Committee at Queen of Peace Catholic Church and have served on many mission trips. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY LIFE? My family is very close. We plan family trips every year. COVID put a hold on things, but we went to

the Keys in late April. Family came from all over the US and the Bahamas. It was great to reconnect. I never take moments with family for granted. WHAT HAS HAPPENED RECENTLY THAT HAS RESTORED YOUR FAITH IN HUMANITY? Watching our health care workers over the last two years has been amazing. What an incredible level of commitment and service. They have selflessly given back to our families and our wonderful community. HOW DO YOU FIND TIME FOR ALL YOU DO? I maximize my day. I am up by 3 am and to the gym by 4 am. I take time for prayer. I protect my time in the morning and by the evening I am spent. I am blessed with good sleep. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE? Happy are those who dream dreams and are willing to pay the price to make them come true.

Josh Elder

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FLOORING BUSINESS? My dad started Gainesville CarpetsPlus Colortile in 1978. I grew up around the business. I worked for my dad during the summers installing floors and literally worked from the ground up. After I attended the University of Florida and earned a degree in Economics, my dad asked me to join him. And in 2018, when my dad retired - I took over. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN AT YOUR CURRENT LOCATION AT 6510 NW 13TH STREET IN GAINESVILLE? No, we started off on Main Street, but by 2008 we had outgrown our space. We built the current building and have been growing every year since. WITH THE CHALLENGES OF THE LAST FEW YEARS, HAVE YOU MADE ANY CHANGES? None. We immediately applied to be an essential business and once approved we continued to work. We never closed, which is good because I am an office guy and can’t work from home. And my staff, they were right here with me.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STAFF? We work together, cover for each other, we are family. We recently had a team member retire after 38 years. Some of our subcontractors have worked for us for over 35 years. FAMILY SEEMS TO BE A CONSISTENT THEME. HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORK AND FAMILY LIFE? Family means everything to me. My boys are my priority, my business my second. I coach my sons’ JV Basketball Team at Queen of Peace. I never miss any event when it comes to my boys. ANY HOBBIES? Golf and Traveling. Both are great ways to get away. Walking the 18 holes at Hawkstone is a total pleasure. Traveling is my other hobby and passion. I love to travel with my kids, but also by myself. I love seeing and experiencing different places and cultures. WHAT IS THE BEST LIFE ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED? It’s okay to be successful, just don’t become greedy.

Proprietary seasoning blends and their own wine!

Boiled, fried and raw platters

“Mr. & Mrs. Crab, located in Butler Plaza Central, is not the only seafood boil house here in town, but they maintain a competitive edge by focusing on superb customer service, a great overall dining experience, and of course, delicious seafood with their own proprietary blend of seasonings and sauces that you can customize to your liking.” Gainesville is not the only location Mr. and Mrs. Crab has, but the company is very selective about where they open up, and chose to make this one of their other homes in May 2020 due to UF and their love of this community. Delayed from their original March grand opening due to the pandemic, they found themselves faced with the huge challenge of the unknown with opening their doors with no dine in allowed and take-out only. But like many others restaurants who survived this tough time, they not only survived, but thrived, and they attribute this to the great attitude and spirit of their employees and the tremendous community support. Mr. & Mrs. Crab, located in Butler Plaza Central, is not the only seafood boil house here in town, but they maintain a competitive edge by focusing on superb customer service, a great overall dining experience, and of course, delicious seafood with their own proprietary blend of seasonings and sauces that you can customize to your liking. Menu items include a wide variety of crabs - king, snow, Dungeness, and blue, as well as shrimp, lobster, scallops, oysters - steamed and raw, calamari, crawfish, clams, and mussels - both green and blue. Boil platters (especially the create-your-own combos) are the most popular and come with the usual accompaniments of potatoes, sausage and corn, and appetizers, soups and fried seafood items are also available, For the non-seafood lover, there are chicken wings! Take-out is still very popular here, but when dining in, be sure to ask about their Happy Hour and Weekly Specials, which are available every week. And if you're one of many who fall in love with their dried seasonings blend, you can take home a bottle with you, as they are for sale. Next time you're craving seafood, dig in and keep it crabby! C E L E B R AT I N G 60 YEARS W I T H 6 0 DAYS OF GIVING INVESTING IN THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR LOCALS HAS BEEN THE HALLMARK OF FIRST FEDERAL BANK SINCE 1962. ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY FIRST FEDERAL BANK United Way of North Central Florida

For six decades, First Federal Bank has stood as a proud community pillar – contributing to the stability of our local economies, and pouring back in to the lives of our neighbors and friends. Originally founded to offer savings accounts and make home loans to its neighbors, today First Federal is a community-based mutual savings bank offering consumer and business accounts, services, and loans throughout North Central Florida. “First Federal Bank is the only mutual bank chartered in the state of Florida and is committed to supporting local nonprofit organizations,” said John Medina, the bank’s President and CEO. “Recognizing and supporting the work of charities in our back yard strengthens our towns and underscores our commitment to remaining an active member of the community.” This year marks First Federal’s 60th anniversary of being a community bank. To celebrate, the bank is spearheading a 60 Days of Giving initiative. Sixty non-profit organizations will receive a donation over 60 days. The non-profits are being drawn from a list of local organizations who were nominated by bank employees at the beginning of the initiative. Each day during the 60 day period, a winner will receive a $1,000 donation. On the 60th day, a grand prize of $6,000 will be awarded to a non-profit to end the initiative. All said, $65,000 will be donated to organizations throughout the bank’s market areas. “You truly make my heart leap for joy. Thank you for helping to keep our families close to their hospitalized children. It is a priceless gift to give. We are so honored to celebrate your 60th anniversary with you!” said Sherry Houston, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities North Central Florida, recipient of one of the daily donations. The bank’s heart belongs to the communities, it donates time and funds to building playgrounds at elementary schools, funding computer labs, marching with our community in support of babies, supporting local youth and school sports teams, donating time and money to build affordable houses, providing places for youth and seniors to grow.
