LIFESTYLE LETTER
HOME & DESIGN
March 2022 PUBLISHER
Rynni Henderson | rynni.henderson@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Home. The very word conveys so much and can mean so many different things to everyone. It is meant to be a place of retreat, rest, love, and a shelter from the outside world—a place where you can let your guard down and just be. Some homes feel just like that, and some can be disorganized, disorderly, boring and make us feel not so great. The good news – it’s never too late to change the climate of our homes! Welcome to our March issue where we’re all about Home and Design. Creating a home that you want to spend all of your time in isn’t easy. The memories that are made within the walls of our home are what last regardless of if our home has the latest trends or if it hasn’t been updated in years. While it is fun to look at beautiful homes and dream about renovations, we all know that the love we share in our homes is truly what matters most. In this year’s Home issue, we take a peek inside an artist’s retreat in the Town of Tioga, get lots of advice from local interiors and style experts, and learn about current trends which are all about bright, vibrant color while creating organization, and staying organized! March is the month of Spring which means events and activities are all around us, and you’ll find a great lineup of stuff to do within these pages. You’ll also see the fun we always have on our City Scene pages including this magazine’s recent ribbon cutting event with the Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce. Happy beginning of Spring, from our home to yours. And see you around town!

Sisset's has endured through extraordinary times, yet we've not lost our passion to bring our customers extraordinary merchandise. Many customers shopped at Melissa's former shop, Patio Designs, also in Gainesville, years ago. These customers still have the furniture they purchased then and come in to select new cushions to freshen it up. A couple of Sisset's furniture manufacturers have been in business for over 100 years...still made in the USA! With the focus on unique pieces, one of a kind furniture designs, Sisset's brings the comfort of indoors outside. When you walk into Sisset's you sense being in a wonderful place to shop for home and patio décor including seasonal products such as pillows, candles, flags, doormats, paper products and custom floral arrangements. "We are passionate about bringing in quality merchandise that will last and bring smiles for years and years: Talented people! Fabulous items!", shares Sisset's Owner, Melissa Glikes.
ANIMAL RESCUE Melissa is passionate about helping homeless animals find their perfect homes. She was once the Director of the Alachua County Humane Society (now North Central Florida Humane Society) as well as a Supervisor at Alachua County Animal Care & Control. During this time, she was one of 4 grant writers that helped bring $3.7 million to be DIVIDED amongst local animal rescue groups including Operation Catnip at UF. This initial grant boosted Alachua County to be known as one of the most advanced areas in the country for animal rescue. Other areas of animal rescue for Melissa include working with Home Van Pet Care and St Francis Pet Care-2 groups based in Alachua County which promote helping low-income and homeless people keep their animals instead of having to give them up because they are having a tough time financially. These groups are responsible for making sure that the pets are spayed/neutered and that they have adequate food, flea and heartworm supplies. Don't be surprised to see Melissa talking to a homeless person on the side of the road IF that person has a pet!! Making sure the animals, usually dogs, are spayed or neutered and are properly cared for is her passion. Sisset's sponsors a senior animal every month at the North Central Florida Humane Society and donates to various animal rescue groups located in Alachua County. Melissa likes to keep it local and Sisset's accepts pet food and gently used or new cat and dog collars, leashes and harnesses. Melissa has 2 dogs, 2 cats and a pig. They are all rescues.

IT’S SPRING! Let us tell you about plants that thrive and flourish in Florida’s often challenging environment ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHOWCASE PROPERTIES OF NORTH CENTRAL FLORIDA
It’s Spring! You’re probably thinking of what you want to plant in the yard that will thrive and flourish in Florida’s often challenging environment. We’ve got some native plant suggestions that are absolute warriors at withstanding the steady sun, humidity, and drought of our home state, plus which have the added bonus of being incredibly self-sufficient, forgiving, and native to the region: Firebush - With bright flowers and bulletproof constitution, this plant attracts birds, butterflies and bees. Practically impervious to elemental challenge once it’s settled in. Flowers from late spring until frost. Beautyberry - Known as American Mulberry, it will bloom pale lavender flowers and vibrant purple fruits to attract birds. Coral Honeysuckle - Also known as Trumpet Honeysuckle, this gorgeous vine produces bright red tubular flowers through spring and summer and attracts hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies. Yucca - Tough and visually striking with beautiful white blossoms, the Yucca is great for accent or focus points with its dramatic, sturdy flair. Muhly Grass - This easily grown ornamental grass makes fluffy pink, purple, and white flower stalks up to 2-3 feet, with a feathery texture that produces a dreamy ambiance that adds depth and texture. Passion Flower - Unique and eye-catching, the deceptively delicate perennial can conquer even the driest Florida summer with flowering indigo and purple vines. Visit our blog for more details about these plants and how to choose and care for them: Showcase Ocala Native Florida Plants . Happy Spring and Happy Planting!

Marjorie & Wine Writer Tim Atkin in Provence
When you think about wine, what comes to mind? Perhaps Happy Hour with friends, a glass with dinner, or even a vacation of vineyards and tasting rooms. To me, wine is all those things, and so much more; wine is my career, my passion, and my hobby. Each time I pour a glass of wine, I am transported in my mind to a beautiful vineyard of grapes and vines. I’m horseback riding through vineyards in Argentina, traversing the rocky soil and marveling at the magnificent Andes. Or I’m hiking a steep vineyard in the South of France, mesmerized by the Rhone River and fields of sunflowers and lavender. Sometimes I reminisce about collecting red and green slate in the vineyards of some of Germany’s most famous Riesling producers. I hope wine evokes the same feelings of wonder for you. Savor each sip and enjoy with cherished friends and great food. Plan a vacation to your favorite wine region and be prepared to be swept away by the magic of wine. Cheers!
