December - Holidays and Giving The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child - whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. Growing up with my family in New Orleans, as a child, we had a tradition of opening of presents first thing in the morning, Christmas dinner, and then heading to the movie theater to see whatever the newest blockbuster being released that day was. Years later, the movie tradition faded away and we’d spend the day opening presents, relaxing, eating Christmas dinner and watching football or movies on tv. All very fond memories indeed. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share holiday traditions with you from some of our local residents and business owners. My hope for all of you this season is that you feel happiness and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love. TAXES... WHAT NOW? “Taxes are something I am only to worry about once a year.” Should this really be the case? Over the past few years, the United States Treasury Department has taken a much greater interest in the average household. This has been through the issuance of stimulus, child tax care credits and health care. It is important to stay up to date on what, how and, why you report certain things to the IRS. The two biggest items on the average household’s radar should be the mid-year change to the standard mileage deduction and how the IRS is going to be used to identify former students for student loan forgiveness. The standard mileage deduction is important because with “rampant inflation” the IRS has taken a rare measure to identify the additional cost to employers as well as employees. This measure comes in the form of a change to the deduction. This change took effect on July 1st, 2022 and is now 62.5 cent per mile up from 58.5 cents per mile. For the average individual this could be an additional deduction or reimbursement of $480. And certain student loans will be able to be forgiven based on your income being below a certain threshold. Many folks should note that if they are close to the threshold of not being

I was born and raised in Warsaw Poland. Christmas is a very special holiday, and it all revolves around cooking and family gatherings. We celebrate Christmas Eve with a traditional evening supper when the first stars appear in the sky. My family would have 12 dishes. Instead of meat there would be a variety of fish dishes and vegetables. From cold appetizers, to soup, pancakes, salad, cabbage dried fruits to the main dish, fish, best wishes for the holiday and incoming year are made for all at the dinner.

Santa hats and cookies are two constants at the holidays. Doesn’t everyone wear a Santa hat when decorating the tree? This has been a tradition since the boys were little, and the only thing that has changed is the size of the hats. And Christmas Eve, the boys decorate cookies. Decorating means eating half the dough, quickly icing, and adding sprinkles and eating many of what gets decorated as each one gets finished.

HOME M A DE VA NIL L A E X T R A C T Every household should have some quality vanilla extract on hand, and what’s greater quality than homemade with love? I prefer madagascar bourbon vanilla beans and online retailers offer great prices on glass bottles. Once you’ve gathered your bottles and vanilla beans, you need a quick trip to the liquor store for a bottle of 150+ proof grain alcohol. For an 8 oz bottle, I use 6-8 whole vanilla beans. I cut each end off and run a shallow slice though the outer skin of the bean before placing in the jar. Size cut depends on your jar. Pour the grain alcohol over the beans until the bottle is full. At North Florida Rehab and Chiropractic, we support and are grateful for the Scleroderma Research Foundation (SRF). This is dear to Dr. Laura’s heart as her mom lost her battle with this disease. Scleroderma is an autoimmune disorder—a rheumatic disease that causes inflammation in the skin and other areas of the body. The name scleroderma literally means “hard skin” because the inflammation triggers the body’s own immune system to make too much collagen, leading to the hardening and tightening of the skin and connective tissues (ie: fibrosis). In the most serious cases, there can be complications resulting in damage to the heart, lungs, and digestive system. As it has many facets, diagnosis and treatment are difficult, leaving those affected and their families lost for answers. Supporting SRF leads to much needed increases in awareness and knowledge among those living with scleroderma, the medical community, and the general public. Clients are provided with food monthly; supplemented with gift cards for supplies, personal hygiene products, pet food, gift baskets for the holidays, Christmas toys for children and school supplies.

That was my life for over 26 years! Even after I moved to Gainesville to be near my children and grandchildren I was once again surrounded with dance and the dance community, as the Director of Development/Marketing for Dance Alive National Ballet. Now I am a Diplomat for the Greater Gainesville Chamber of Commerce, Board Member for Alachua Hospitality Council, Seat on the Tourist Development Council, Cotton Club Museum and Cultural Club Advisory Board, Gainesville Woman’s Club… I LOVE this community! Learning so much about Gainesville and the people that live here, I knew it was time for me to take that leap of faith. Listening to our patients, has given us insight into anxiety and claustrophobia. Claustrophobia is fear of confined spaces. But to those who experience that anxiety, it’s much more. Patients affected experience symptoms such as sweating, trembling, hot or cold flushes, difficulty breathing, with rapid heartbeat, tightness in the chest, nausea, feeling faint, confusion, tinnitus, and panic attacks. Before having an MRI some people get strong feelings of anxiety that manifest in to physical symptoms, so it has made us reevaluate our strategy for a successful appointment. First and most importantly, it is critical that we realize, that claustrophobia is a real, and not a made up condition, that it’s more common than many may think. Acknowledging it, and addressing it directly in a friendly and understanding manor is key. While scheduling patients for their exam, we notice that they are used to people not listening or taking them seriously when they mention “mild claustrophobia”. We LISTEN! If severe claustrophobia is indicated, we may even open up on a weekend for a single patient, so that we can spend the needed time and TLC with the patient that needs more help to get through the MRI. Some of the techniques we use at our center, is first to acknowledge it and plan extra time to the appointment to help the patient prepare. We allow family member or friend to stay in the MRI suite with the patient for support during exam. We can reach out to the doctor before the appointment to request medication if needed for the patient. When we are able, we will enter the patient into our machine feet first, so that we can make the adjustment less traumatic. We offer aromatherapy, music, blindfold or prism glasses to help the patient see outside of the machine. We use positive reinforcement, and when patients successfully complete the MRI, we have a freezer full of ice cream to reward them with. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”

With the holidays right around the corner, now is the time to get the family sleigh ready for travel and gift-delivery duty. By taking care of simple maintenance checks now, you can help ensure stress-free driving all winter long. 1. Check and set tire pressure. One of the most forgotten items is tires. Be sure to set tire pressure - most vehicles should be set between 34-42psi. Set the tire pressure higher for long distance traveling as you will get slightly better gas mileage. Some local service shops will do this free of charge. Don’t forget your spare tire as it is often neglected until needed :) 2. Check oil and coolant level. These are basic and most vehicles will tell you when these are low. However, a quick check around the coolant tank and radiator for white crystallization (dried coolant) and verifying oil level add a sense of security to your drive. Our oil is rated for 10,000 miles, but most automotive shops service vehicles every 3,000 - 5,000 miles. Always keep track of where you are for your service interval. It may be a great time to get that oil & filter service completed if you are close to the end of the service interval. 3. Have a plan. Batteries fail randomly. Nails & screws occasionally fill the roadway. Some service stations in rural areas are 50-75 miles away. Having an extra gallon or two of gas, and jumper cables never failed. Additionally, you can buy a mobile jump box to jump your car on Amazon for anywhere between $25-50 that may provide an extra peace of mind. Always do this a week or two before your upcoming trip to allow adequate time for repairs on your vehicle if needed. Additionally, many service shops provide “Trip Checks” at little charge, that cover most safety items.
