Better Plants Better Process Better CBD

Straight Hemp makes superior CBD products. The Plants and Process make a difference in crafting superior CBD formulas. To make a better CBD product, the selection of plants and the processes used make all the difference. It all starts with the plants. Lots of hemp used in inferior products is bred and grown for fiber in giant fields, subjected to harsh farming and harvesting conditions, dried in the fields, and mechanically harvested. That works great if you’re trying to make rope or sandals. It doesn’t work so well to produce a high-quality hemp oil for human consumption. The plants Straight Hemp uses are specially bred and grown in Colorado, Oregon, and Vermont to produce the highest-quality oil. Higher-quality plants produce higher-quality oil which allows us to create a better product. But it’s not just the plants, that’s an important first step, but it is just that, a first step. How you process both the plants and the oil makes a difference as well.

The Process Makes a Difference To get the highest quality hemp terpenes, Straight Hemp uses a steam-extraction process that takes freshly harvested, single-source hemp plants and pulls the essential oils out while they’re still fresh. This produces higher-quality terpenes and maximizes all the naturally occurring benefits of the hemp plant. Our base hemp oil is processed through CO2 extraction. Where many cheaper CBD products get their hemp oil from an alcohol extraction process, we’ve found that a dual CO2 extraction process has the ability to produce a lighter, more consistent, higher-quality oil that maximizes the retention of the qualities of the original plant. We then blend the hemp oil with our specifically selected mix of essential oil terpenes to maximize its effectiveness. All of the specific hemp terpenes in Straight Hemp’s products come from a single-source farm and processor in Willamette Valley of Oregon.

Hemp Terpenes Make a Difference The specific terpene blend of a CBD product makes a difference. It is one of the main differentiators between products and can be a significant factor in determining an individual product’s character. Most of our research and development when creating Straight Hemp’s CBD products was focused on getting the right blend of terpenes. If you have questions about a product, a dead giveaway can be the presence of Myrcene, which is often indicative of a good product. If you’re not sure, you can find the terpene levels on the lab report that every reputable supplier is required to have. So Much To Be Thankful For In this season of giving thanks, we often find ourselves reflecting on the many blessings in our lives. My biggest thank you at this moment is that for the most part here in North Central Florida, we were spared the wrath of Hurricane Ian. Our hearts and prayers go out to the millions of people who were impacted by this very serious storm and were not so fortunate. The true spirit of Thanksgiving embodies thankfulness and gratitude. Its focus is spending time with those you love and encourages giving back in a meaningful way. While ambition, competition and staying on top of our goals is very important, let’s not forget the importance of being present, enjoying the ride, and appreciating those around us who have helped us along in our journey. True contentment comes from within and from fulfilling who we were made to be. I am so very fortunate to have many blessings in my life and so many things to be thankful for – my family, my husband, my friends, my health, and of course this wonderful community that I am grateful to be a part of and the many residents here who continue to support this magazine. To all of you and for all of this, thank you. Our November issue is dedicated to stories of gathering, gratefulness and giving back to our community. We are thankful for our veterans who gave so much, and for the residents and businesses in our community who support so many wonderful organizations and help make our city the vibrant community that it is. “Christmas is a pretty big deal for us, and we pretty much make it a month-long extravaganza all the way up to New Year’s. It’s a good excuse for all of us to basically act like kids for a few weeks, and we make the most of it. There are two non-negotiable, absolutely required activities that must be observed each year without fail: One, we pile into the car some night and go driving around looking at neighborhood Christmas lights and decorations. It’s fun to see what people have created in their front yards and on their houses, and the themes are really entertaining. Some of them go way over the top, too, with lights, music, strobes – you name it. We always have a blast doing that. “The second required activity is cookie baking and watching Christmas movies. There’s lots of baking and many, many, many cookies. My favorites are the little starburst cookies with sprinkles on top. You can eat one in just a bite, which makes it all too easy to devour half a plate of them before you know what happened. Then we’ll pile into the living room and watch Christmas with the Kranks, Elf, All I Want for Christmas, and The Sound of Music, or we’ll have them playing in the background while we bake and eat cookies. I look forward to it every year.”

“In our family, we start Christmas the day after Thanksgiving. Instead of going out into the melee of Black Friday, we use the day to put our tree up and decorate it, which is a lot more fun than struggling through a horde of people shopping – and sometimes wrestling each other, literally – for retail goodies. So we give ourselves a pat on the back for taking the saner option of spending the day together in a relaxing atmosphere, hanging bulbs on the tree and talking, cooking, baking, and eating. It’s a great way to start off the holidays. “Christmas Eve is spent, without fail, at my grandmother’s home in Williston, where she cooks an enormous dinner for all of us – including the great-grandchildren. She puts on a spread that would put a caterer to shame. After we eat, we open new pajama presents from Granny, and everyone puts them on – including most of us grandchildren now in our forties. Then we gather in the family room for an evening of board games – which get hilariously competitive. We don’t do Black Friday shopping, but we have a matching level of ruthlessness playing Settlers of Catan.” “But the highlight of the night is always, always Aunt Cathy doing her famous headstand – a now decades-old tradition. It’s not Christmas without that headstand.”

Florida Rottweiler Rescue Ranch & Sanctuary MARY LORENZI WORKING WITH DIFFERENT RESCUES THROUGHOUT THE STATE

The Florida Rottweiler Rescue Ranch & Sanctuary moved their location from Dover, FL to Alachua County in June of this year. Since they have been here, they have donated tons and tons of dog food, cat food, litter, etc. to Putnam, Bradford, Suwannee, Live Oak, Madison, and Lake City. They also donate food to pet food pantries and pet food drives including the American Legion in Bronson, Lokis Lunchbox in Keystone, Scruffy’s Snack Shack in Starke to name a few. The owner/ operator of the Florida Rottweiler Rescue Ranch is Joe Pimentel. Joe’s motto is “pay

it forward.” What an exceptional example of community involvement. I am Mary Lorenzi and I help transport animals from shelters to rescues. I've been involved with animal welfare/rescue for years. It is my passion. Sometimes I may be transporting animals from shelters to the University of Florida Community Outreach Program for vetting, spays and neuters. Or you may see me at the Humane Society of North Central Florida for the same. I bought the van in my picture in April of 2021 for the sole purpose of transporting animals.

I also work closely with Bradford and Levy County welfare/rescue facilities too. Luckily Alachua and Levy County facilities have access to vet care, but Bradford County does not. So, at least once, but mostly twice a week, I go to the Bradford shelter and take the animals that need vetting to either UF Community Outreach or the North Central Florida Humane Society. I transport animals for any rescue in Florida that needs my help. There are about twenty or more that I have worked with. Wherever there are rescues and animals in need, you will find me.

There is a specific scent, a nostalgia inducing blend of orange blossoms and high-octane racing fuel, that always brings me right back to my childhood. My family would camp at the races, visit all varieties of car shows, compete in autocrosses, and turn wrenches on our own cars. It was a great way to grow up and continues to shape my interests today. Now that I have a family of my own, I am enthusiastically sharing my passion for car culture with them. You can find us mingling with fellow enthusiasts at the monthly Gainesville Cars & Coffee event, meeting the Hesketh Racing crew to watch a Formula 1 race, or participating in a PCA (Porsche Club of America) event. Watching this passion for car culture and motorsport grow in my kids is profoundly rewarding, and for that I am thankful. B R IG A DE IR O S This Brazilian dessert (brigadeiros) is called chocolate fudge truffles here.

INGREDIENTS • One 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk • 1/4 cup cocoa powder • 1/4 tsp salt • 2 tablespoons butter

DIRECTIONS 1. Heat the first three ingredients in a skillet on low heat. Stir constantly until it thickens and pulls away from the bottom of the pan. (@15min) Remove from heat, and stir in butter. Set aside and let cool. 2. With buttered hands, roll into small balls and then roll them in sprinkles of your choice. Feel free to put cherries, nuts or other deliciousness in the center. Enjoy! 3. SPICY GREEN BE AN CASSEROLE INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup French-fried jalapenos: That's right, typically I order these online ahead of time, but they are sometimes available at Publix around the holidays • 1/2 cup French-fried onions: These you can find at any grocery store, at any time of year. • 2 drained cans of Green beans • A can of condensed cream of mushroom soup • 1 cup shredded Cheese: I use shredded pepper jack cheese but you can use any shredded cheese you like. • Optional ingredients: sauteed mushrooms, onions, garlic, or jalapenos, Crumbled bacon, Parmesan cheese, black pepper, chipotle powder, or green chile to taste

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix the beans and soup in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave until warm. 2. Stir in half the cheese. Microwave until melted and well-blended. 3. Transfer to a prepared baking dish. Top with fried onions, fried jalapenos and remaining cheese. 4. Bake in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and the onions are brown. In an oven preheated to 350 degrees F, this canned green bean casserole should be perfectly cooked in about 10 minutes. "We inherited a lot of holiday recipes from my great grandmother in New Mexico, but my personal favorite is her Spicy Green Bean Casserole." Jennifer Cassidy

FABULOUS BRINE FOR A PERFEC T T URKE Y INGREDIENTS • 14–16-pound turkey • 1 cup kosher salt • 2/3 cup light brown sugar • 1 gallon vegetable stock ( or chicken stock) • 1 tablespoon black peppercorns (or 1.5 teaspoons ground black pepper) • 1.5 teaspoons allspice berries • 1 tablespoon candied ginger • 1 gallon of ice-cold water

DIRECTIONS 1. 3 days before cooking, thaw turkey in refrigerator. 2. Combine vegetable/chicken stock, salt, brown sugar, peppercorns, allspice berries, and candied ginger in large stockpot over medium-high heat. Stir occasional, bring to a boil. After boiling for few minutes, remove from heat, reduce to room temperature. 3. Combine brine and ice water in container. Place thawed turkey (innards removed) breast side down in brine. Make sure turkey is fully immersed, cover, refrigerate for 24 hours, turning once. 4. Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Remove turkey from brine, rinse thoroughly with cold water. 5. Discard brine. 6. Place turkey on roasting rack in half sheet pan, pat dry. 7. Fit pads of butter, thin apple slices, and fresh rosemary sprigs directly under turkey skin. 8. On lowest rack, roast turkey at 500 degrees uncovered for 30 minutes, reduce temperature to 350 degrees, roasting until internal temperature is 161 degrees. 9. WHEN AND WHY DID THE WILLIE MAE STOKES COMMUNITY CENTER OPEN? Dec 2017. The Center was opened so I could provide a place for community resources and to meet the needs of our young people. To be the place where education and caring happens.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF THE MICANOPY COMMUNITY? I was born and raised in Micanopy and one of the major problems I encountered as a child was the limited activities. When I graduated from high school, I attended Santa Fe College and then I joined the Military. I vowed I would never come back to Micanopy. But I did return after my service, only to find my community having the same problems I encountered as a child: no recreation or community resources.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE COMMUNITY CENTER? My goal is for our center to be a model for rural communities on how to create resources and sustainable programs.

WHO WAS YOUR GREATEST MENTOR? My mother was my hero. She raised 9 kids, while working on a minimal income. She instilled in me a sense of pride and a love for family and community.

WORDS YOU LIVE BY. "I’m grateful." As a three-time cancer survivor, I have learned to value each day and I pass that thought to each of our young people.

Founded in 2019, our non-profit organization has been protecting the springs and inspiring the community by hosting underwater trash cleanups and filming short videos for social media. We’ve since progressed to an array of educational programming and restoration initiatives. Recently, we unveiled a fundraiser with First Magnitude Brewing Company called “Keep the Springs Glowing”. During this annual event, we
