Children + Pets = Unconditional Love

This edition is always one of my favorites of the year, because of the immense joy that children and pets bring to their families and the significant impact they make on their communities.

Children aren't merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they're the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Kids represent some of our hardest work and greatest investment.

Who could forget pets? The special kind of companionship with our fur kids can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, the opportunity to learn, grow and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. And who could ignore the bond between kids and their furry or feathery friends? The bond is often deep and meaningful, fostering qualities like empathy, responsibility and companionship.

I'm dedicating this edition to Rigby, my devoted furry sidekick (shown here).

Although children are of infinitely more value, what children and pets share in common is that they need us. Our care, attention and intention shapes how they're raised and who they become. We hope this edition inspires you to pour a little extra into the pets and children in your life this month.

Cheers!

UNIQUE POTENTIALS

THE GODDARD SCHOOL OF FRISCO OFFERS LEADING PRESCHOOL EDUCATION IN TWO LOCATIONS

ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Early childhood students learn best through play and exploration, asserts education specialists at The Goddard School of Frisco. Jamie Thompson and Chevelle Johnson, Goddard School local owners/ operators, state this early learning institution develops the social, emotional, physical and academic development of children from infancy to Pre-K.

CONTINUED >

This local Goddard School team now has two Frisco locations: Frisco (West) located at 3336 Main Street, and Frisco (East) more recently opened at 4915 Coit Road.

"Children are natural investigators. We embrace and encourage active exploration in all of our classrooms, from the littlest learners to Kindergarten superstars," confirms Jamie, who began working at Goddard during June 2017 and served as director of operations.

Jamie received her bachelor's degree with a focus on Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of North Texas. Before becoming director, she taught elementary school for eight years.

She says their classrooms and lessons are designed with children’s needs in mind so they grow through play-based activities and hands-on learning experiences, and are encouraged to explore, create and develop essential skills. "Our experienced teachers also provide personalized attention," she adds.

Jamie and Chevelle became on-site owners/operators of the Goddard Frisco West location during December 2022, and added the 14,000-square-foot Frisco East facility during October 2023.

"Little ones begin to transition to preschool routines and new conventions of play, supporting all areas of continuous

development. Engaging in creative play not only sparks their imagination but also supports cognitive and sensory development," states Chevelle.

Chevelle has worked at Goddard since October 2011. She has a bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Clark Atlanta University. “My favorite thing about working with children is that every day is different, and they always make me laugh," she declares.

Features of the Goddard school are playgrounds, STEAM, customized physical spaces, health and safety and life lesson library.

Chevelle says Goddard teachers help children grow into happy, healthy,

intelligent little humans who are ready to take on the world around them.

"For infants, we follow care schedules set by our families and use personal care moments to connect with and expand little one’s individual development. Our teachers also incorporate songs, finger play, books and sensory and physical exploration each day. Our busy toddlers flex their independence as they learn to walk, talk and safely explore the world around them. Their curiosity and interests drive the classroom structure," she says.

She adds that in their preschool and Pre-K classrooms, they add more school preparation and readiness by focusing on

academic skills as well as interpersonal and collaboration skills.

"Children learn how to ask and answer questions, work with others, navigate social situations and understand and communicate their own thoughts and feelings," she says.

Jamie says their experienced Goddard School teachers meet all state or local regulations and have access to continuous training provided by Texas and the group's own Goddard University. "We train teachers on a regular basis in health and safety regulations, education standards and more."

Tours of either Goddard Frisco location can be booked online, and done in-person or virtually. Registrations are completed electronically.

One local parent's testimony to the school is: "The Goddard School has been such a blessing to our family. Our son has grown leaps and bounds since starting and the staff treats us like family." Another parent indicated: "We have been so impressed with both the administrative and teaching staff. They are warm, welcoming and so communicative. Curriculum is purposeful, well communicated and fun!"

Goddard currently licenses more than 600 Goddard School franchises that serve more than 75,000 students in 37 states and Washington, D.C.

ESTATE PLANNING (WILLS & TRUSTS)

Our attorneys create customized estate plans based on your family structure, life plans, goals, values, principles, and vision. There is no such thing as one-size-fits-all estate planning.

PROBATE

The probate process helps to ensure that your deceased loved one’s estate is distributed according to their wishes. Mourning the loss of a loved one is difficult, and the thought of dealing with legal issues and piles of paperwork can make you feel overwhelmed.

GUARDIANSHIP & SPECIAL NEEDS

Appointing a guardian is necessary when a person can no longer make or communicate safe or sound decisions about his/her person and/or property or has become susceptible to fraud or undue influence. A special needs trust allows a person with a disability to have money put aside for their care.

TRUST ADMINISTRATION

Trust administration includes settling any debts, paying taxes, transferring property titles and other administrative tasks that must be handled to close out or settle the estate of the decedent.

ASSET PROTECTION

Asset protection planning involves making prudent decisions today to protect yourself, your business, and your hard-earned assets from loss due to lawsuits, creditors or bankruptcies.

BUSINESS PLANNING

An effective business plan is not only a roadmap that outlines your goals, strategies, and potential hurdles, but also helps protect your business from death, divorce, or disability by preparing in advance.

Frisco Humane Society

Rescuing one pet at a time: Frisco Humane Society is an 100% volunteer-driven/all-foster homebased, 501(c)(3) nonprofit, no-kill animal rescue organization. FHS provides temporary foster care and medical attention for homeless animals until permanent homes can be found for them. This organization is funded by adoption fees, public donations and fundraising efforts.

Being a foster pet parent is a rewarding, unforgettable experience. However, adoptions open up spaces in foster homes to save other animals. Each pet adopted is spay/neutered, tested, vaccinated, has flea/tick/worm preventative and is microchipped.

Supporters can donate time for adoption events, fundraising activities or administrative duties. Financial donations provide for medical care and veterinary services.

Adopt-A-Pet events for cats are held every Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. in PetSmart at 3333 Preston Road (Stonebriar Centre) in Frisco. Both dog and cat 'Meet and Greets' and adoptions are available by appointment (pictures of adoptables online).

Help Change Lives Of Homeless, Abused Or Unwanted Animals

PLAYFUL Stories FOR TWEENS

Ryan Schreck is a rising Frisco freshman who loves to read, so much so, he's writing books for others to enjoy. To date, both of his works are entertaining children's adventure stories about talking animals.

"As a toddler, I always liked animals and used to line up stuffed animals. One of my favorite books when I was young was Charlotte’s Web," he recalls, adding he currently enjoys The Wind in the Willows

He says his intrigue with animals kept progressing after studying wildlife in his family's backyard.

Ryan is also an avid soccer player and says he relishes being around nature and wildlife. Some of his other interests include geography and history. He is homeschooled, taking classes either from his mother, Jamie Schreck, or THEO Christian Solutions teachers.

He was one of the authors who participated in the Frisco Book Fest during April at the Frisco Public Library. Here are synopses from his two books.

Frisco resident Ryan Schreck, 14, has self-published two books so far: The Adventures of Rodney and The Quest of the Mice. He says both novels, ideally geared for readers 9 to 12 years old, are inspired by interactions he had with animals in his own backyard. At press time, he was composing a third book about a squirrel named Scout.

But will they be too late? Featuring deadly traps, dastardly foes, daring escapes and dynamic characters, this story is sure to become a top choice on every bookshelf.

THE ADVENTURES OF RODNEY: A LITTLE RABBIT WITH A BIG HEART

At first glance, Rodney may seem like an ordinary rabbit. But when trouble arises and a dark evil lurks, this adventurous critter proves big heroes can come in small packages. Featuring a host of lovable (and not-so-lovable) characters you could find in your own backyard, this heartwarming tale of facing fears and learning to trust yourself is bound to become a family favorite.

"My books are about not judging someone else on surface levels and the importance of perseverance. Everyone's dealing with their own personal life battles," he states, saying he plans to add several more books to his series.

Ryan's books are available on Amazon: $8.99 paperback; $3.99 Kindle edition.

VOLUNTEER TO CARE FOR ANIMALS AWAITING

ADOPTION AT COLLIN COUNTY ANIMAL SHELTER

Note that pets shown here are examples of the local adoptables.

ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY COLLIN COUNTY ADOPTABLE PETS VOLUNTEERS

Within the heart of the Collin County Animal Shelter lies a linchpin  that nurtures and supports its most vulnerable residents: the foster program. From young animals in need of nurturing care to injured animals requiring specialized attention, fosters provide a safe haven for these animals to grow and thrive. Fosters not only play a crucial role in preparing these animals for adoption, they also help alleviate shelter overcrowding, creating space for more animals in need.

Lacy DeHorney, CCAS animal services manager, explains that placing pets in a

home setting enables the shelter team to gather valuable insights into their behaviors that may not be apparent within the shelter environment. "This information, including the animal's training status, interactions with various individuals, and response to common household sounds, is essential for ensuring pets are matched with suitable forever homes."

Prospective fosters need to fill out an application. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old, reside within a 50-mile radius of the shelter, have their resident pets spayed/neutered and current on rabies vaccinations, and have access to email. For individuals fostering a dog, a meeting with any resident dogs is necessary. Additionally, fosters play a

role in the adoption process by engaging with potential adopters to facilitate a successful match.

CCAS is always in need of more fosters, Lacy affirms. For those who cannot commit to full-time fostering, the shelter offers a Doggie Day Out Program. This initiative allows individuals to take a dog out for the day, providing a break from shelter life and offering valuable insights into the dog’s behavior. Individuals can apply and note their interest in this program specifically.

Participating as a foster home makes  life-saving differences for these animals. By fostering, Lacy says community members help create better futures for these deserving pets.
