My name is Becka Corbitt, and I’m the new publisher for Frisco Life. In just four weeks of being entrenched in Frisco, I have made my way to meetings with business owners, attended networking events and walked into many wonderful businesses. I have been overwhelmed with the friendly, spirited, hospitable and kind citizens of Frisco. I told my husband just the other day, “I believe this is one of the friendliest towns I’ve ever experienced.” I’ve been involved in developing and working with many high-end publications throughout my career, and I am beyond thrilled to now have the opportunity to invest my time and energy into Frisco Life. Most importantly, I am excited to give the community of Frisco a voice through these pages. Everyone has a story, and I know there are many amazing stories right here inside the growing city of Frisco. The August issue is all about our kids and pets. Grab an iced tea or cold lemonade

MORE PLAY TIME FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR Frisco ISD elementary students will get an extra 10-15 minutes of play time in the upcoming school year. As part of a pilot program, all 42 FISD elementary campuses will schedule extra time within the school day to allow students to exercise their bodies and their brains, according to Christy Fiori, managing director of elementary schools, who presented the program to the board of trustees June 10. The structured "brain breaks" would last about 10-15 minutes and be in addition to the traditional 30-minute recess. The total play time will be divided into periods best suited to each school. Christy says brain breaks may be taken outdoors as appropriate.

CHILDHOOD DREAMS

ARTICLE KRISTI ANDERSON PHOTOGRAPHY GUY T PHILLIPS 12

Frisco Life | August 2019

MILESSA MURPHY STEWART IS A LOCAL MODERN IMPRESSIONIST ARTIST. She has completed more than 500 pieces and has traveled around the country featuring her creative masterpieces. The Dream-Makers collection was created as recently as last year. Milessa used cabinet cards from the late 1800s and early 1900s. She has combined images of children and her take on their future career endeavors. Here she describes her art and what it means to her. HOT AIR BALLOON Most of the time, it’s the little boys getting themselves into trouble. But these two, sisters from different mothers, have their hands full. They aren’t sure what to do. Looking around for some help or are they looking to see if anyone is watching? Being an only child, I found myself in predicaments similar to this, having to figure out how to get myself out of trouble or pay the consequence. Personally, I think they should run and jump into the balloon for the ride of a lifetime! Details: Size: 24-by-24, heavy-duty gallery-wrapped canvas Medium: Oil THE DENTIST During my recent visit to Florida, I saw the two beautifully carved totems that had been created in Austria. To go along with the current body of work, Dream-Makers, they seemed the perfect fit for the vintage little girl that I have been waiting to paint. I think she is going to be a fine dentist or oral surgeon. I’ll bet you didn’t know my husband is an oral surgeon! Details: Size: 24-by-24 canvas Medium: Oil

The practice of astrology recognizes four cardinal signs of the zodiac: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn—sometimes called reacting signs. It associates those people born “under” one of these with certain human behaviors and traits like being active, self-motivated, insightful and ambitious. Cardinal signs are the initiators of the zodiac, ready to forge ahead with plans and attract those that can support their efforts. Cardinal signs are leaders and tend to be outgoing because they’re engaged with the world in a dynamic way. They’re restless to start new projects and happiest when running the show. FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS With Texas, you can never be too prepared to have a backup plan for rainstorms or inclement weather. If your clients have the availability, a good sunny day before 11 a.m. has cooler weather which will make clients more comfortable. The more at ease they are, the bigger the smiles. You can also never go wrong with photographing during sunset hour. Keep in mind, the sun sets at various times throughout the year. Summer days are longer, so sessions can be as late as 7-8 p.m. Sunset lighting is beautiful in color and tones, and if you can frame the person just right, you can have a nice backlit warm glow around them! As a photographer, most clients will rely on you to have the best angle or spot for photos. If you can get there at least 15-20 minutes before your clients, scope out the area. Look around and see where you think will be best. Consider easy access points and safety— especially look for poisonous plants and animals! Allow time for interaction. Some children (or even adults), will find it hard to sit still in a single pose. Give your clients mini breaks to walk around and interact with nature. Even playing around and giving them things to do like walking together, hugging or holding hands can make for memorable pictures.

JONNY WADE’S LEGACY

ARTICLE KRISTI ANDERSON

WHEN LIFE THROWS US THE BIG “C” WORD, IT CAN BEGIN TO FEEL UNFAIR; THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR CHILDREN. Nearly 300,000 children worldwide are diagnosed with pediatric cancer every year. And sadly, only 4% of the National Cancer Institute budget is allotted to the pediatric cancer sector. With more than 100,000 children dying from this awful disease, it is time for changes to be made.

“I DON’T WANT ANY OTHER KID TO HAVE CANCER.”

A HERO ARISES The saying that “not all heroes wear capes” is a true sentiment—especially in the case of the little boy, Jonny Wade, who helped cultivate the foundation, Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer. Jonny’s life started out normal; he was active in sports, very social and testing at the fourth-grade level as a first grader. One week before Christmas, Jonny arrived home from school with a headache. After several doctor’s visits and scans, Jonny was diagnosed with having a malignant brain tumor. Due to complications throughout treatment, Jonny had to endure several surgeries, including partial tumor removal, eye surgeries, port and feeding tube insertions. He faced both physical and emotional battles that spanned across an entire year. Even though Jonny had struggles, he kept his spirits up. The sentiment he kept repeating in the hospital was, “I don’t want any other kid to have cancer.” He researched the topic and kept asking the important questions. When he discovered that only 4% of the cancer budget is given to pediatric cancer, he made a request to his fellow US Congressman Rodney Davis to have that changed. Jonny lost his battle with pediatric cancer on Christmas the following year. Having touched so many lives, Jonny’s funeral held more than two million people in attendance and was live-streamed for viewers across the globe. During the State of Union Address, President Obama designated the Wade family as a Hero Family. Jonny’s legacy built Kids Shouldn’t Have Cancer Foundation. With the help of Jonny’s mother, Kimberly, this foundation has raised more than $1 million towards Pediatric Cancer research through the course of three years. This past April, Kimberly introduced the Pediatric Cancer Research Act to Congress (HR2234). This is a $370 million fund, and it would help keep Jonny’s wish alive by changing the 4%. To help pass this important bill, please email or call your fellow state representative. In addition to her tireless work with getting bill HR2234 passed, Kimberly helps spearhead the annual fundraiser, including an annual gala held in St. Louis in September 2019 as well as the Annual Gold Party held in September 2019 in Frisco. The Annual Gold Party will hold raffles, live music and a speech from Jonny’s 12-year-old twin brother. For more information on where you can help, email Contact@KSHCF.com. August 2019 | Frisco Life
