t’s that time of year again, where we gather around the table and eat 2nd (okay 3rd) helpings of our Thanksgiving feast, watch football and most importantly, give thanks to all of our blessings in our lives. In this edition, you will learn some history about Thanksgiving, view some exquisite Thanksgiving table settings as well as hear about some delicate wines that could be served during the holiday, to name just a few. I hope this holiday, as you are happily filling your bellies with Mom’s delicious Thanksgiving turkey and mashed potatoes, that you stop to remember what the holiday is all about. It is about giving thanks to those blessings around you. It’s all too often, especially these days, where we all get so caught up in the hustle and bustle that life brings us, we can sometimes lose sight on what’s really important. Thanksgiving is a time to remind us all what truly enriches our lives. I would like to give a special thank you to all of the Frisconians, for being a part of this new publication. rowing up in a small town we were often compared to the beautiful paintings of American artist Norman Rockwall reflecting small town life. I would have to agree, and one of my favorite paintings is his iconic “Freedom from Want.” Also known as “The Thanksgiving Picture” or “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” it was the third of the Four Freedoms series of four oil paintings by Mr. Rockwell. The works were inspired by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 State of the Union Address, known as Four Freedoms. The painting was created in November 1942 and published in the March 6, 1943, issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Interestingly enough, all of the people in the picture were friends and family of Rockwell in Arlington, Vermont, who were photographed individually and painted into the scene. The work depicts a group of people gathered around a dinner table for a holiday meal, much like the families of Frisco this Thanksgiving. May you enjoy the blessings of the season for you and your family!

2016 Cadillac ATS-V Not Quite There Yet

hen I think of Cadillac, I picture two things: One, a blue-haired grandmother, sitting two inches from the steering wheel of her Seville driving below the minimum speed limit, on her way to the beauty salon. And two, a hip hop artist with chrome, twenty two inch rims on his Escalade, ghost riding the whip, while blasting his latest album at top volume capacity. Neither example is a desirable stereotype for General Motors’ luxury brand. So, it’s no surprise that in the last ten years Cadillac has transitioned from a luxury brand for grandmas and rappers, to a performance luxury brand catering to the sophisticated consumer with a lead foot. This desire for a shift in brand perception is evident by Cadillac's driving experience tours and new, Cadillac V-Performance Academy at Spring Mountain Motor Resort and Country Club. Once open, the school will utilize the CTS-V and ATS-V, Cadillac's race inspired performance vehicles. Until then, you will have to take these mentioned race track worthy rides for your own test drive, which is exactly what I was lucky enough to do. For a luxury, performance vehicle, it’s only apropos to take it for a city drive and track test. When running about town, the ATS-V Coupe drives like you would expect, a comfortable ride made even more comfortable by the upgraded, 16-way adjustable RECARO seat. I have never seen so many variables in a seat before. Perhaps one might need to adjust their seat to accommodate their empty wallet and inflated ego after purchasing such an upgrade; impressive but unnecessary. Nestled into my seat, I took my new chariot to dinner in Dallas. On the way there, the ATS-V got to stretch its legs. The car is completely comfortable and stable while cruising at 95 mph. The best part is that if your lead foot causes you to creep past the triple digits, there is plenty of torque to plant you in your seat. With my travel time cut almost in half, I quickly arrived in the Knox/Henderson district. The valet, who sees a plethora of exotic vehicles on any given evening exclaimed, “Why did you pick this car?” “Because it’s fast!” I replied. He laughed and said, “It’s beautiful, I’ll park it up front.” If this car can earn the respect of a man used to luxury vehicles, I knew I was off to a good start. While the ATS-V doesn’t cause “double takes” like an exotic would, it has a respectable stature. Behind the classic, Cadillac grill is a 3.6 L, 464 horsepower twin turbo engine. That, combined with its 8-speed automatic transmission, gives it a 0 to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds. This comes in handy while merging on and off Texas’ endless tollways. For the true gear head, the ATS-V is available in a 6-speed manual transmission. Yes, you read that correctly. A car manufacturer has decided to produce a manual transmission and not sell out to the paddle shifting, dual clutch loving, lazy-bone drivers of today. Unfortunately for me, the manual was not made available for my review. But, with the confident, approving nod of the valet, I knew it was time to put this self-proclaimed “track capable” coupe to the test. And so it began, I enjoyed a morning of fun at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson; a 1.7 mile road course, most popular with the Porsche and MX-5 crowd. The ATS-V starts track ready with Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (a favorite among racers). Yet, the most important feature for a car that weighs 3,803 lbs is the stability control. According to Cadillac, CONTINUED > 28

the suspension, including a magnetic ride control system, reacts to the road up to 1,000 times per second. As most vehicles today, the ATS-V offers five different driving modes: Wet, Dry, Sport 1, Sport 2, and Race. The magnetic ride control coupled with the track mode setting resulted in a car that did not drive like a Cadillac. It definitely surpassed my expectations for how grandma’s favorite car brand would perform on a race course. However, I came to realize, I was only impressed because it was breaking my perception of the brand, not because empirically it is impressive as a track car. Yes, the magnetic ride control prevented a lot of body roll. Yes, the Brembo brakes offered a lot of bite. Yes, the torque was impressive. And yes, race mode did help. But, even with all the technology and all of the race inspired performance parts, the car was still lethargic in challenging turns. The off camber chicane, deemed the “rattlesnake” was throwing the CPU for a loop. As the traction control cut power, I was forced to sluggishly accelerate out of the turn complex lap after lap. In the high speed turns the car performed beautifully. But try to force a low speed turn after a heavy braking zone and the car reacted with chirping understeer. It is worth noting that I was able to pass a Porsche 996 race car in the ATS-V. Although the 996 is much older, I found it remarkable that a street car could withstand me tossing it about in extreme Texas heat. That achievement brought a smile to my face, which is really what a performance vehicle is all about. In essence, the Cadillac ATS-V is like a little girl who put on her mother’s lipstick, pearls, and high heels. She’s dressed like a woman, but she’s still a little girl. The ATS-V tries really hard to be a sports car. The seats are modeled after race seats, with openings for a racing harness that’ll never be installed because there is no roll cage to attach it. The MOMO inspired steering wheel even has the thumb notches carved out. The cockpit is surrounded by carbon fiber finishes. And the “shoes,” Michelins, are the best of the best. Nevertheless, the ATS-V still feels like she’s playing dress up. She’s dressed like a track car, but she’s not quite there yet. November 2016 | Frisco Life

The first trend seen on the runways were ruffles. That's right, ladies. Put

those irons away for a bit and enjoy it while you can. Gorgeous blouses, flowing skirts, you name it. If it has ruffles, you're ready for fall. The second trend seen on the runway was shades of pink and yellow. Who says you have to put away those pastel colors after Easter? These could be dresses, skirts, or blouses and pants. Brighten your Fall days away. The third trend showcased were pantsuits. Now, we aren't talking about your boring, drab pantsuit. This is all about comfort meets style. When you pair these up with the perfect accessories, you will be a showstopper at any party. Another fall fashion piece this year is wearing gold metallics. This isn't suggesting to pull out shiny metallic M.C Hammer pants. This is more about dresses, or cute free flowing blouses that make a statement piece. This trend is asking to be a bit bolder, but give it a go! And lastly, we can't forget accessories to go along with our out on the town looks. Here we taste examples from Napa, Sonoma and Washington State They all have enough tannic backbone to stand up the meat and enough fruit to make them enjoyable to drink now. However, these wines are going to age well if you buy to cellar. We indicate how long next to each one. 2012 Mercer ‘Cavalie’ Reserve, Horse Heaven Hills, Washington. $42. The wines of Washington State have been quietly but unremittingly creeping up the quality ladder for over a decade. The quaintly named ‘Horse Heaven Hills’ AVA (American Viticultural Area) is in the vanguard. Mercer is located in Prosser, just outside the northern boundary. This blend of 52% merlot, 27% cabernet sauvignon with malbec and petit verdot making up the remainder, has a pronounced earthy, vegetal character in the nose. Blueberry flavors and a velvety mouthful. When we voted between these wines, those tasters who liked soft wines put this wine on top. 2012 Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, California. $75 Each year, venerated Sonoma winery Kenwood Vineyards selects the best of their cabernet sauvignon and reserves it for their ‘Artist 36

Series’. This vintage features the work of photographic artist Nathan Wirth on the label. Inside, 81% of the wine is cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, and the remainder malbec and petit verdot. That is, same varieties but vastly different blend from the previous wine. The effect is profound. The soft textures are replaced by a firm structure with tannins that while not harsh, are clearly manifest. This wine is likely ageable for a decade and would improve as it is rather closed in right now. There is a bright ruby color and flavors of French oak and blackberries. 2012 Profile Red Wine. Merryvale Vineyards, Napa Valley, California. $200. Merryvale is an esteemed Napa wine producer and Profile is their flagship red wine. At 85% cabernet sauvignon and 15% petit verdot the blend is typical of cabernet-centric Napa Valley. Nose of blackcurrant, cigar box, and just enough greenness to exude breed. In the mouth, the dark fruit flavors are echoed but there is also thyme, oak and cocoa. This is a complex wine and it is frankly oenological infanticide to drink it this young. Put away a few bottles and try them every five years or so. It will evolve for at least a decade. Proof of this aging was shown by proprietor René Schlatter at a recent media/trade tasting in Dallas. He tasted through vintages back to the 1990s (1999, 1998, and 1996). This was an audience paid to be skeptical, if not downright grumpy, and they were won over by the wine’s development. Profile is Merryvale’s shot at the boutique Napa cabernet market and if you collect this coveted genre add it to your list. 2013 Robert Mondavi Winery, Maestro, Red Wine, California. $40. It hardly seems 50 years since Robert Mondavi split with the family to find his own winery in Oakville. And at the tender entrepreneur’s age of 52. The rest is history, as they say, and how fitting that this should be the wine to commemorate the winery’s first 50 years. What a wine. A quantum step up in the intensity stakes. The tannins envelop the tongue but are not harsh. Classic cabernet dark fruit nose with oak and greenness. Voluptuous in the mouth. It will age but is seductive even now. This selection is something of a bargain. 2013 Grassini Family Vineyards, ‘Articondo’ Red Wine, Happy Canyon, Santa Barbara, California. $45. A little known winery in Santa Barbara specializing in estate grown wines. This is their halo wine. Bordeaux blend. Classic cabernet nose of dark fruits, oak, mocha. Mouth is chewy tannins. Flavors of dark fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry). Aging potential. Complex interplay of flavors in the mouth. Forget the triviality that an AVA like ‘Happy Canyon’ seems to imply (is there a ‘Sad Canyon’? What about a ‘Sarcastic Canyon’?) These people are from California. Humor them. The important thing is, that this area is turning out some prodigious wines. These wines are available locally at Sigel’s and other fine wine stores, or online.

The History of The Thanksgiving Turkey GOBBLE, GOBBLE

s we gather around our tables this year, the traditional Thanksgiving feast we are used to, includes that of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green been casserole, and the list goes on. (who else is hungry now?) During the first Thanksgiving feast celebrated at the Plymouth Colony in 1621 by the Pilgrims and Wampanoag, the history of the Thanksgiving turkey began. During this time, there were slimmer pickings in terms of what was passed around the table. Traditionally, you would find, corn, grains, wildfowl including an assortment of birds, and shellfish. 42

Among all the changes throughout the centuries, whether it be adding cranberry or Grandma’s delicious Pecan pie, the one Thanksgiving food that has remained constant is, you guessed it, the turkey! Even though in the 17th century the turkey may not have been the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving feast as it is seen today, it was still enjoyed by many. Interesting enough, the preparation of the turkey, then, and now, still have a number of similarities. In 1621, the pilgrims would stuff their turkeys with onions and herbs, two

ingredients that can still be found today. The method of cooking turkeys was to either boil them first and then roast them, or vice versa. They believed the more you roasted them beforehand, the more caramelization would occur to make them darker. (sound familiar?). Enjoy those Turkey’s this year, my fellow Frisconians. As you pass the bird around, just think of where it all began. And most of all, lets all remember what this holiday is all about. Happy Thanksgiving! Don't forget to save room for Grandma’s Pecan pie.
