ello Frisco! My name is Kristi Anderson and I am your Frisco Life editor. I was born and raised in the DFW area and wouldn’t have it any other way. Frisco, Texas, the place that I call home now, as will be explained in this launch issue, is quickly becoming one of the highest desired cities in the country and has grown at a rapid rate, and still growing strong! Frisco is family oriented with the abundance of different schools, parks and recreation all around. It is becoming appealing to the younger business crowds with new businesses moving their headquarters to this sought after city.
All you have to do is drive around the area a few minutes and you will find the housing in Frisco is growing as well. The sprawling new developments going up such as Hollyhock play homage to the lifestyle Frisco provides with community pools, playgrounds, and gorgeous homes. In Frisco, you can even become “star struck” as you are likely to see one of our famous Dallas Cowboys players around in the area, as the new Dallas Cowboys Training facility The Star comes home to Frisco as part of the 5 Billion Mile project discussed in this issue. That’s right. We have America’s Team in America’s city. (It’ll catch on). There is no lack of shopping whether you prefer shopping at the mall with department stores, or if smaller niche boutiques are more your go-to, downtown Frisco is the place to be. I am excited to watch this community continue to grow and flourish. It is our commitment to make this publication yours. As you explore each issue, you very well could be reading about your next door neighbor. he summer July firework displays may be completed, but Frisco Texas continues to BOOM! Frisco, Texas is one of the fastest growing communities in Texas. Nestled between both Denton and Collin counties, Frisco is located 25 minutes north of Dallas and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport. Frisco is quickly being recognized as the most sought after cities in the United States. It is known for its family-oriented communities with esteemed schools, beautiful neighborhoods with sprawling homes, people from everywhere around the US continue to migrate towards. The population has grown considerably year after year, making it one of the fastest growing cities in the United States to date. Frisco has some of the most sought after housing in the DFW area. Many businesses are relocating their headquarters such as, California’s prominent, Jamba Juice. Frisco will also soon be the home of the only 5 Billion Mile. Within a miles radius, stretching along the Dallas North Tollway and Warren Parkway to the North side of Lebanon Road, The 5 Billion Mile will have 4 different mixed-use developments, worth more than $5 billion in capital investment. These include the much anticipated retail/business space Wade Park that will include an I-Pic Theatre, Pinstripes Bowling, Hotel ZaZa, just to name a few. The Gate will be a large development holding hotels, business offices as well as retail space. Frisco Station will also hold retail and business space alongside residential units and restaurants. And last, but certainly not least… Are you ready to be “star struck”, Frisco? The Dallas Cowboys have arrived to Frisco! That’s right; the fifth development to make up the 5 Billion Mile will be the newly built 435,000 square foot extravagant facility, The Star. This is home to the Dallas Cowboys business headquarters as well as their training facilities. And it doesn’t stop there. There will be no shortage of shopping, restaurants and other recreation spaces within The Star. It is located off of the North Dallas Tollway and Gaylord Parkway. Frisco Life was invited to attend The Star’s ribbon cutting Grand Opening event. The goal of The Star is to not only make this home of The Cowboys training, but have this facility be used and enjoyed by the entire community. There will be numerous High School football games played at The Star as well as other events. On opening weekend in fact, 4 High School games were held at a successful opening night. We can’t wait to see all of the Frisco stars shine!

f you live in Frisco, chances are, you have had the pleasure of enjoying an FC Dallas game at Toyota Stadium. If not, or you are just in for a visit, you won’t be disappointed in this experience. We all know that behind every great success, are great people. Frisco’s Dan Hunt is one of them. He is partnered with his brother, Clark Hunt, (who also happens to be the owner of the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs), in ownership of FC Dallas. Dan is involved with anything FC Dallas related, be it, negotiating player’s contracts to assisting with marketing ticket sales. Dan has an everyday presence at FC Dallas and is a driving force to its success.
Along with the wild success of FC Dallas, Dan Hunt is also a prominent player in the City of Frisco. He owns a Oil & Gas Company in Frisco Square, he holds a direct partnership with Frisco ISD that allows the Frisco high schools to hold their football games in Toyota Stadium. He is also responsible for the National Soccer League (NSL) Hall of Fame being brought to the FC Dallas venue soon. Dan explained, they plan to have an induction ceremony, a concert and FC Dallas game occurring during the Grand Opening of the NSL Hall of Fame. He expects the economic impact to double with this great addition. Wherever you may find him, Dan is a busy leader in our great city. Dan and his brother Clark were both soccer players in their youth. They became so active in the sport, that their parents would drive them across the country to participate in games. Moving closer to current times, Dan and Clark’s Father saw a newspaper article in a Dallas publication, regarding the Rough Riders coming to Frisco. Upon reading that article, they all went to meet with the powers at be, did some negotiating, and just like that, FC Dallas was born! FC Dallas games are played in the nation’s 3rd soccer specific stadium, Toyota Stadium. You can also enjoy a variety of concerts and other events there throughout the year. Dan resides in Frisco and is married to his wife, Toni and they are proud parents to their 14 month old daughter, Darlington. They arrived at that name due to both Dan and Toni’s name being found in their daughter’s name. (clever, right?). Dan shared with me that he and his brother's mother, Norma, happens to be an avid FC Dallas fan herself. A fun fact about Mrs. Hunt is she has attended every Super Bowl game to date. Now that is impressive! When you are enjoying an FC Dallas game, a concert, or even a Frisco High School football game at Toyota Stadium, the driving force behind it is the Hunt family. The city of Frisco is excited to see what the future holds with the addition of the NSL Hall of Fame as well as the continued commitment that Dan Hunt and family have in Frisco. The sky is the limit with this family.

MY KELLY STORY
I
try to think of my life in chapters because there’s a sense of growth and momentum toward the future,
giving permission to different periods of my life so that they may have a beginning and an end. Not every chapter is as perfect, or as profound, or as difficult as the chapter before or after, but they transition into each other, and hopefully, like any chapters in a good book, they keep getting better. In one of the most recent chapters of my life, I was there when my friend Kelly got the news she had stage IV breast cancer and a week to live. I was there when she wanted to fight for her life. I was there through her final days. And in the end, I was there to celebrate her life with everyone who loved her—the only way we all knew how—with tons of laughter, tears, music, stories, and some good ole Texas fun. Kelly was as hilarious as she was talented and incredibly loyal. What Kelly and Gunner
was said in Kelly’s makeup chair stayed in Kelly’s chair. Guests to Kelly’s chair were greeted with a warm, cozy Kelly hug and a giggle, and chairtime always turned into whispered therapy sessions. Eventually, I didn’t even care about the hair and makeup. I just wanted to be around Kelly. A few months before Kelly’s passing, a motorist took the life of another dear friend of ours while he was out riding his bike. So many wonderful things were happening to honor him, and Kelly remarked that he would’ve loved to see it all—how much people loved him. Little did I know that I only had a few months left with my sweet Kelly, who only went to the hospital after she couldn’t shake that pesky flu. When Kelly was at the end of her journey, when the chemo treatments were doing more harm than helping, she finally made the decision to go to hospice. At first I wondered why she had to suffer those agonizing weeks, but as the hordes of flowers, cards, letters, and friends started spilling into the little Kindred Hospice in Fort Worth, I thought back to our conversation. Eventually, the nurses at the front stopped asking whom people were visiting. There was standing-room-only for Kelly, as she lay in bed and told stories. Her pride and joy, her four-year-old son, Gunner, could be heard running up and down the hallways, yelling about zombies and cockroaches. He didn’t understand why his momma who used to play with him and paint his face with scary makeup (as he requested) was now so tired and spending the night in a place filled with other tired people. As hard as it was to share this journey with Kelly, I had the honor of witnessing just how much she meant to so very many people and just how much love she had for others, and just how much her child could fill her heart up with light and joy. I’m forever changed by this experience, seeing my friend in ways I’d never seen her before. She couldn’t have been more beautiful. Most people would’ve given up when everyone, including a team of experts, had given up on them. But her dignity, integrity, and grace grew from her courage, and I’m renewed because of it. It was in this moment of strength and courage that a group of us started to come together. We wanted to do something to take care of this single mother’s pride and joy and create something that would remind Gunner just how truly special his mama

was to all of us. Their love for each other and for Halloween became our inspiration, and thus, Friscovania was born. A Polo Primer: How to be a savvy fan
Those of you who have tried explaining polo to the uninitiated will appreciate this guide to some of the sport’s more baffling customs, terminology and peculiarities. A horse that is 58 inches or less is considered a pony, regardless of its breeding. Originally, no horse higher than 13 hands and 2 inches (54 inches) was allowed in play. Today there is no limitation, but naturally the smaller horses perform better, provided they can carry the weight of the rider swiftly. The polo pony must be courageous, intelligent, sensitive (without being nervous or too high-strung), obedient, highly trained and must love the game. Polo ponies, after a little schooling, learn to follow the ball for themselves. Why do the players wear white pants? Like many polo traditions, this can be traced

back to 19th century India, where the game was played by nobility and later introduced

to British army officers stationed there. Competing in the intense heat, players preferred clothing that was light in weight and color. We know that jodhpurs, the tailored riding britches still worn by some players, took their name from the Indian state of Jodhpur, but how many also realize that Brooks Brothers developed the button-down collar specifically for polo players who wanted to keep their collar tabs from flapping in

their faces? Polo, it seems, has always been fashionable. What happened to the horses’ manes and tails? Free flowing manes and tails are dangerous in polo because they can become entangled with players’ mallets or the reins as the rider tries to control his horse. Therefore manes are shaved and the ponies’ tails are wrapped or braided to prevent tangling. Wrapping or braiding long ago replaced the crueler practice of docking – or amputating - the horse’s tail near the base so all that remained was a short stump. Can you use the same horse for an entire game? No. Polo ponies run the equivalent of one to two miles during a seven-and-ahalf-minute chukker, so they must rest frequently. At the high-goal level, players will ideally have a fresh horse every period. What is a score called and why do the teams change directions whenever there is one? Points scored in polo are called goals, which is much more straightforward than trying to explain why polo teams don’t change field directions by periods or halves like other sports. One theory is that the practice of changing after every goal scored originated in the days when many polo fields ran east to west (generally situated north to south now) and neither team wanted to play for extended periods of time with the sun or wind in their face. What are all the people doing out on the field at halftime? It’s customary to invite the public onto the field at halftime to tread in the divots kicked up by the horses. The custom has a practical as well as a public-relations value: the field is repaired for the teams by the time they begin the second half of play. To this day, we don’t know the name of the first enterprising club manager to realize he had an abundant and cheap grounds-keeping crew at his disposal. What do they call the opening play in polo? In hockey it’s a face-off, in basketball it’s the tip-off, but in polo it’s known as the throw-in. The umpire tosses the ball in between the two teams which are lined up parallel to one another. In earlier days, the custom was to place the ball in the middle of the field and have two opposing players charge it from opposite directions. Why are there no left-handed players? Lefties were officially banned from polo in the mid-1930s for safety reasons, but the restriction was relaxed after World War II when polo players of any persuasion were a scarce lot. The USPA reinstated the lefty ban again in 1974 and it stuck: there are no more left-handed polo players. To understand why, consider this: You’re driving merrily down the street when all of a sudden, coming Polo Gear

It's truly a sight to see. The artist, Leo Villareal, was hired to create this wonderful work of art.
