William Thomas | william.thomas@citylifestyle.com

For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement because it presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue, especially when it comes to our health. We planned this edition from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes for fitness by checking boxes for the short term but by valuing what's sustainable over the long run. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to everyone's physical, emotional and mental health. Industry analysts indicate the following health care trends are ones to especially monitor during 2024: generative artificial intelligence (AI), making it easier to implement and interpret results that generate personalized recommendations; convergence of mental and physical health care delivery; increasing virtual health care assistants; shift from reactive to proactive approaches in preventive health care; elderly care advancements; and 3D technology to print tools and devices, including surgical instruments, orthopedic or dental implants and prosthetics. Please join us in setting a beneficial course in wellness. Here’s to y'all! We’re rooting for you and everyone's good health.

Compassion, care and trust: As a comprehensive, patient-oriented practice, Centre for Diagnostic & Cosmetic Dentistry has been serving the Frisco area community since 1992. Regina Powe, D.D.S., leads the experienced team for this generational practice located at 8501 Wade Blvd, Ste. 1140. "The world of dentistry is an interesting science that's changing so much. Available technology improves our accuracy, and actually makes it fun to provide even more beneficial solutions. We do our absolute best to ensure our patients' mouths are as healthy as possible, and we even do smile makeovers for cosmetic concerns," states Dr. Powe. The Centre's specialists cover the variety of specific and age-appropriate services needed, such as general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, geriatric dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry and dental implants. General dental services there include cleanings, exams, night guards, occlusal adjustment, retainers, sleep apnea treatment, sports mouth guards and TMJ treatment. "We also handle popular dental treatments, such as Invisalign, teeth whitening, same-day crowns and veneers," adds Dr. Powe. She says same-day dental crowns are made using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing dental technology. Same-day dentistry eliminates the need for temporary crowns and guarantees instant smile transformation, she adds. "Some of our biggest compliments from patients come from people who said they never smiled before working with us. Making that kind of positive impact on someone's life makes it so worthwhile," she says. Furthermore, she says she values the people her team gets to meet. "While seeing each other every six months, we get to interact, share in each other's lives and catch up. We get to be part of various families' stories. Children that I saw decades ago are now in college or are having their own children and bringing them into the practice."

Regarding maintaining an understanding of new dental treatment options, Dr. Powe, who while in college originally considered becoming a geneticist, says she considers it a privilege to participate in continuing education. "In fact, our office always enjoys more than the required number of continuing education requirements." To that end, she says they remain in the top percent of dentists in the United States and Canada. "Only 5% of general dentistry practices have scanners, while we have three of them. Technology devices are expensive, but I've been blessed with a wonderful husband who understands it's a quality of patient care issue at our practice and he's always supported that investment. Our equipment adds such an important and vital layer to what we can do for patients." She predicts a dental breakthrough to monitor during 2024 is the connection between photography and CT scans. She explains that pictures of faces can be taken to see what's truly happening in the underlying bone structure. Whereas in the past, this process was a bit of guesswork, this new interface provides exact documentations. Dr. Powe is a member of the American and Texas Dental Associations, the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, the Academy of Laser Dentistry and the American Academy of Dental Implantology with completing qualifications as Fellow in 2022. She serves on the board of directors of the Dallas Chapter of the American Academy of General Dentistry. She also belongs to the local North Texas Dental Society, and is in the Junior League of Collin County. Additionally, she holds membership in the Collin County Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. "My greatest joy has been watching dentistry expand clinically and change practically. Our practice has enjoyed being on the front lines of that change. We've equipped our office with state-of-the-art digital equipment so our patients lack nothing that dentistry has to offer," states the dentist with nearly 30 years in practice. CONTINUED >

Dr. Powe says her team takes care of 2-year-olds as well as all their grandparents. Her attention to details is known as being very beneficial. She explains, "We have the capacity to see inside the recesses of your TMJ joints and straighten that one misaligned tooth." The Centre's staff offers $130 specials for new patients regarding dental cleanings, exams and X-rays and fluoride treatments. "Dentistry is fascinating, practical and advancing at rocket speed. I love the patients, the science and the

opportunities to serve," Dr. Powe concludes. "We've been blessed to grow up with each other's families to the point that we're all like extended family members brought together by a hometown-style dental practice." "I hope our patients feel like their dental needs are being taken care of by neighbors who also have the first-rate technology to assist with their best health," she adds. 972.427.5050 ReginaPoweDDS.com

Laughter Among Best Medicine Some Say Humor Makes Everything Better--Just Ask A Local Lawyer ARTICLE BY JULES MICHÈLLE

R O C K Y

D H I R :

"Let’s shake things up!"

Frisco-based attorney Rocky Dhir sometimes speaks to other lawyers about clean comedy, what lawyers can learn from stand-up and how to get through bombing onstage. This CEO and president of Atlas Legal Research has performed live comedy since 2021. Lifestyle asked Rocky how comedy contributes to people's happiness, health and well-being.

DOES COMEDY IMPROVE LIFE?

"The obvious answer is comedy, when done well, makes us laugh, which releases endorphins, leading to feeling well. The less obvious answer is comedy makes us more empathetic. Comedy helps us see various ways in which others suffer (bad relationships, tough upbringings, financial struggles, mental health challenges) and how, even in adversity, we can see humor, laugh and derive joy. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of comedy is it makes us smarter. Unless there's a pie making contact with a face, comedy is about finding commonality between seemingly disjointed concepts. Good comedy makes you think and broaden your viewpoints."

BESIDES LOWERING BLOOD PRESSURE AND BURNING CALORIES, ISN'T IT GOOD FOR HEARTS TO LAUGH?

"I'm not a doctor, though I'd love to play one on TV if anyone wants to cast me. I'm therefore not qualified to give medical advice. That’s a good thing because doctors freak out if patients have enlarged hearts, so telling people laughter will give them big hearts might send the wrong message. Photo courtesy of Rocky Dhir.

18

B ACK STAGE | A RTS + C ULTURE

However, laughter can, and does, make our hearts fuller. As a lawyer, I must give a disclaimer ('cuz that’s what my kind does): laughter is most effective when we laugh WITH each other, when it comes from a place of love. Laughing AT another is usually counter-productive, unless you're laughing at me while I'm performing. Comedy and laughter can unite us. Whether laughing about airline travel, doctor visits, marriage or other topics, we typically laugh when we recognize a piece of our own ridiculousness. Humans are ultimately a bunch of adults with the means to cause the mischief we were denied as kids. When we realize that and learn to take ourselves less seriously, it can make not just our hearts, but our entire lives, fuller." CONTINUED >

WHY DID YOU GET INTO STAND-UP COMEDY?

"Every Indian mom dreams of her child becoming a doctor. But I lacked brains and discipline, so I ended up going to law school. Ultimately, I always wanted to heal people in some way, and I'm a huge ham onstage (ironically, I'm vegetarian, so I kinda' disapprove of myself). Growing up, I always noticed comedy and laughter had a tendency to disarm people and build bridges. When we laugh at ourselves, we notice we've more in common than we realize. Across gender, race, ethnicity and all things that can divide us, all of us are trying to make enough living to relax a little and just be ourselves. Stand-up helps us tap into that, and I wanted to learn the art form."

WHY IS WATCHING COMEDIANS 'GOOD MEDICINE'?

"When I'm onstage and the audience is laughing, I notice something magical: all pain disappears. For the 10, 20, 30 or however many minutes I'm performing, those in attendance get to forget their problems and worries. They're engrossed in the narrative and are too busy laughing to be thinking of the world outside. I love that feeling. And I love any comedian who puts their heart and soul into bringing happiness to their audiences. Comedians are living, breathing pain meds. You cannot overdose on us; you can (and should) mix us with alcohol; and your insurance doesn’t care if you see us because you pay out-of-pocket. It’s perfect." BR INGING SMILES TO LIFE Dual Board-Certif ied Douglas Jensen, D.D.S., MS, Of Jensen Orthodontic Arts, Addresses Top Dental Questions

HOW IMPORTANT/POPULAR ARE CLEAR BRACES AND ALIGNERS?

"Both traditional brackets and wires, as an orthodontic treatment option, as well as the removable clear aligner option play important roles in orthodontics. Regarding the time-tested brackets and wires, no longer does it have to be an all-metal setup. Materials science has improved the manufacturing of clear ceramic brackets where the actual brackets can be made as small and comfortable as regular metal brackets while still being adequately strong enough to withstand the rigors of tooth movement. These brackets don't stain or change colors.

Brush and floss to remove plaque, and they'll remain virtually invisible and quite pleasant. They're so advanced, we offer this option as the best for those interested in obtaining excellent esthetic and functional results. The clear, traditional method is still the most efficient and cost-effective way to get the best results. These brackets are the esthetic answer to what clear aligners are trying to be: invisible. Clear aligners have their place as well. This treatment is popular for those not interested in fighting the clean-up battle, and are responsible enough to actually wear aligners of their own free will and choice (about 22 hours per day). WHAT IMPROVEMENTS ARE BEING MADE IN DENTAL IMPLANTS?

"Dental implants are used for a variety of purposes in dentistry such as to support a replacement tooth or a full set of teeth. They're also used as an anchor device to support orthodontic tooth movement. Some are even designed to be removed after use for orthodontics. Refinements in the implant design properties are ever-improving. What's important is that implants are chosen by the team based on the implant company’s research-verified quality of materials and availability of prosthetic options to restore teeth in different ways. As a prosthodontist, I work with specialists in that area to place implants where I need them according to the treatment plan. I then design and place teeth supported by implants."

WHAT STRIDES ARE IN DENTAL 3D PRINTING?

"3D printing is the modern way to create teeth models used for preparing restorations such as crowns, custom brackets and wires, or clear aligners. After creating a high-resolution intraoral scan of the teeth, the prosthetic teeth or appliances can be designed and printed in various materials. Advances are in the availability of better software to design, such as by allowing visualizations of a smile design. Other improvements are in the speed and accuracy of the printed models. We use this technology in our practice in conjunction with the labs that fabricate components designed for each patient. Lingual, or tongue-side orthodontic treatment, for example, is based on 3D scanning and modeling." CONTINUED >

24

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

IS ORTHODON TIC S FOR PEOPLE OF A LL AGE S?

Having an actual specialist in orthodontics to create and carry out the plan will ensure better results because the principles of esthetics and sound tooth movement don’t change just because it’s not braces. After a digital scan of the teeth, specialized software is used to align teeth virtually using sound biomechanical principles of tooth movement. With good treatment planning and a dedication to excellence, clear aligners can work quite nicely."

"It’s nice to get the job done early in life to reap the benefits of functionally well-aligned teeth and fantastic smiles. But it's not too late if you didn’t have the chance as a youngster. In many adult cases, it’s best to have orthodontics first as part of a comprehensive plan to replace missing teeth. Most adults have some wear on their teeth, which detracts from a youthful smile. Orthodontics, in conjunction with a well-conceived restorative plan, can create a smile that turns the clock back 20 years. We’ve treated people from 8 years old to 80 plus years."

WHAT ROLE DO MINIMALLY INVASIVE TECHNIQUES PLAY IN YOUR PRACTICE?

"We educate patients constantly about elements of pleasing smiles: 1) Teeth are in the right place within the framework of lips; 2) Gum lines are symmetrical, even, firm and expose the full length of the crown for best proportion; and 3) White teeth. Achieving all of this can be 'minimally invasive.' Orthodontics should be considered to get teeth in the right position. Next, any cleanup of un-esthetic gums should be addressed; this could require minor laser contouring, which is painless for the most part. Lastly, tooth whitening can really make the smile pop."

WHAT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCEDRIVEN TECHNIQUES OR DIAGNOSTICS WILL SHAPE FUTURE ORTHODONTICS?

"During our complimentary orthodontic exam, I evaluate patients' smiles and take a number of teeth measurements. I dictate a rather cryptic code of numbers and obscure words to my treatment coordinator who puts them in the computer. I often joke with patients that with all of that code, the computer will now tell me what to do. It turns out it really isn’t a joke after all. There are promising applications for AI in orthodontics, particularly in time savings. AI in daily clinical routines can be used as a quality-control procedure. It will probably not, however,

26

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

be able to replace the artistic component and professional experience of human experts."

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF ORTHODONTICS LOOK LIKE, ESPECIALLY IN PERSONALIZED TREATMENT PLANS?

"The future of orthodontics is in using modern tools to diagnose and treatment plan orthodontic care. These ever-improving tools allow for the upfront designing of more accurate appliances such as custom brackets and robotically bent wires, and better software and materials for aligning teeth with clear aligners. All of this improves patients' treatment experiences. Better tools allow for faster treatment in a shorter period of time, with more precise outcomes."

WHAT ELSE SHOULD LIFESTYLE READERS KNOW?

"Although treatment times are reduced and results are better, there's much more to it than that. If you get through braces or a complex treatment plan, and all you got was straight teeth, then I'd have to say we've failed. We want to educate you, get to know you, and be friends. We really listen to each patient's concerns, and closely look at teeth and smiles so we don’t miss anything. We want patients' experience with us to be money, time and effort well-spent." 3595 S. T H E R A PY d o g T R A I N I NG Think your canine has the right temperament to become a certified therapy dog? Then, this new year provides the perfect time to check out a fresh way to partner with your beloved pup. Typical therapy dog tasks include visiting hospitals, retirement centers, schools, colleges, airports, workplaces, rehab facilities, mental health institutions, cancer centers and hospice facilities to comfort and cheer up people. Canines who qualify to become therapy dogs act friendly with strangers, are used to high levels of distractions and honor personal boundaries, such as not jumping up, licking or mouthing folks without being invited. Research shows therapy dogs have positive effects on people's moods, stress and pain levels during facility visits. Therapy dogs provide social interaction with individuals who may not otherwise experience regular socialization. And in the cases of elderly centers, where residents used to have their own dogs, fill that void of loneliness from missing their former, personal furry companions. Therapy dogs offer unconditional love and nonjudgmental interaction while reducing people's anxiety and providing welcomed distractions to ailments. Alliance of Therapy Dogs staffers (TherapyDogs. com) can provide advocates with insurance as well as links to organizations eager to accept therapeutic dog visits.

Recognizing Frisco Community Volunteers Volunteers are the heart of Frisco and neighboring areas. In support of this generous community, we’re spotlighting some of Frisco’s finest volunteers on a monthly basis. These are volunteers who exhibit passion, reliability, integrity, teamwork, positivity and energy. We salute their contributions of time, effort and talent to Frisco’s needs, causes or missions without personal financial gain.

Help encircle critically ill children in the

security of homemade blankets. Project Linus is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated to comforting critically ill and traumatized infants or children with new, handmade security blankets. Volunteers for the Collin/Grayson/Rockwall County Project Linus Chapter distribute sewn, quilted, knitted or crocheted blankets. They deliver these blankets to hospitals and medical centers, including Centennial Baylor Scott & White, Frisco Baylor Scott & White and Texas Health Frisco. A shoutout of gratitude goes to Frisco Quilt Guild supporters, who recently provided a large donation of quilt tops for this initiative. In Frisco, volunteers may drop off handmade blankets for the group in a dedicated Project Linus bin at the JoAnn Fabric & Craft Store, 2930 Preston Road, #800. JoAnn’s in Frisco also accepts material donations for the group. Those wishing to donate fabric or yarn should email forthmar@msn.com or call 972.998.3378 to secure current needs. Regina Forthman, Project Linus Chapter coordinator, says they also accept JoAnn’s gift cards, which may be mailed to Project Linus, P.O. Box 187, Lavon, TX 75166.

Pulse And Poise Medical Team Offers Thorough Assistance, Treatment Plans

Diabetes care involves various strategies and techniques to keep blood sugar levels in check. Pulse and Poise Medical Director Shopana Ganpath, M.D., says her Frisco-based team at 4645 Wyndham Lane, Unit 220A, understands each person’s needs are unique, so they provide personalized care for specific situations.

HEALTHY DIET

The Pulse and Poise clinic offers comprehensive diabetes management plans encompassing different aspects of patients’ lifestyles. “We provide guidance on nutritious food choices, and work closely with each patient to create meal plans that suit their preferences while helping maintain stable blood sugar levels,” says Dr. Ganpath.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

Helping patients develop exercise routines that match fitness levels and interests also is a benefit of Pulse and Poise, states Dr. Ganpath. “Regular physical activity can improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar levels and contribute to overall well-being.”

MEDICATIONS

In addition to lifestyle modifications, these medical professionals may recommend medications or insulin therapy. “We also guide patients on monitoring blood sugar levels at home and interpreting results,” says Dr. Ganpath. 325.340.1649 PulseAndPoise.com

the BENEFITS OF PLANT-BASED EATING ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN AYOADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES

Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing.

EAT R IGH T | F OOD + BE VERAGE

Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows to you consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which mean you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meats but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats is said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!

TIPS TO GET STARTED ON YOUR PLANT-BASED JOURNEY: 1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. A plant-based diet does not mean boring! You can create a variety of dishes, including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant, including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.
