Recognizing Frisco Community Volunteers Volunteers are the heart of Frisco. In support of this generous community, we’re spotlighting some of Frisco’s finest volunteers on a monthly basis. These are volunteers who exhibit passion, reliability, integrity, teamwork, positivity and energy. We salute their contributions of time, effort and talent to Frisco’s needs, causes or missions without personal financial gain.

April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, so be sure to let volunteers know they’re appreciated!

FLEAS – IN THIS CASE, IT’S A WONDERFUL, WELCOMED THING! THIS ACRONYM STANDS FOR ‘FRIENDS OF THE LITTLE ELM ANIMAL SHELTER.’ One of the founding principles of Friends of the Little Elm Animal Shelter is to better the lives of surrendered, stray or abandoned shelter animals through enrichment toys, treats, training and socialization programs, including play groups. Volunteers even formed a sewing circle through which they repurpose donated quilts, blankets and fabric panels into dog and cat beds for the animals. Efforts to get the animals into ‘furever’ homes incorporate inspiring social media visibility and working with local rescue organizations. These pet advocates also collaborate with corporate community partners, such as Hollywood Feed, Kroger, Pet Supplies Plus and Craft Pies Pizza Company. For example, at Christmas, an angel tree at Pet Supplies Plus in Frisco was a big hit, and each shelter animal received gifts donated by community residents. FLEAS volunteers raise funds to provide resources for training programs, veterinary costs and responsible pet ownership promotions throughout the Little Elm/Frisco community. Equally important, they network and drive awareness through pet adoption events. As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization, all gifts to FLEAS are tax-deductible. Monetary donations can be submitted online at FriendsOfTheLittleElmAnimalShelter. org/Donate. The group also has an Amazon wish list for items that directly aid shelter animals. FLEAS can be selected as a nonprofit of choice [charity IJ266] for the Kroger Community Rewards Program, too. A great way to show visible support is to purchase a ‘Peace, Love, Rescue T-shirt’ for $12 each, with 65% of the purchase going straight to supporting programs and the shelter. The shirt design is unique only to FLEAS, and can be secured via VENMO. Ultimately, FLEAS’ leaders invite other pet enthusiasts to sign up to volunteer and share kindness to animals who truly need a helping paw.

Getting In The Swing Of Spring It helps to leave somewhere familiar to go exploring, trying new places and experiences, even getting lost once in a while. It’s those unstructured and open-ended times during which the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built. Adventures and explorations don’t have to always be something huge and crazy, though. They can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or going out to find a fun cookie place we’ve never been to before in a different part of town. Our hope is that this edition encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself at a dog park with your best buddy or in a novel. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for things that matter most to you, but often come last on the calendar. Experience Lone Star-true country life close to home via a tempting Texas vineyard, plentiful wines from locally grown grapes as well as from the Texas High Plains, horses, donkeys, split-rail fences and a rustic barn for popular, live music events. Now throw in food trucks, open fires and s’mores, and it's a perfect outing. "We host ticketed tribute or cover band events on weekends and family-friendly ‘Sip & Shops’ with Texas wine and local vendors once a month," says BarnHill co-owner Steven Neuner. Given that Texas helped popularize country music throughout the world with the state's rich and varied traditions stemming from the Outlaw country movement of the 1960s and 1970s, it's particularly befitting to enjoy this bluesy, rocking type of music outside, under the stars.

Corey Neuner, co-owner and Steven's spouse, adds, "We're also open on select Saturdays noon to 4 p.m. for tastings of wine flights." After co-owners Dean and Joy Dickschat started BarnHill in 2016, it became a premier date night destination on Fridays and Saturdays. The Dickschats say they loved their working farm being referenced as: 'So much country so close to home.' They're now in the process of selling their ownership percentages to the Neuners. Full property ownership is expected to conclude before this year's end. Texas has at least 2,500 varietals. A wine varietal is a wine made with one variety of grapes, such as Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In the United States, a wine qualifies as a varietal if the single grape variety makes up at least 75 percent of the wine. "We appreciate not only the beauty of the fruit and vines, but the effect Mother Nature has on them. We're essentially grape farmers, and we enjoy sharing that with visitors in our special way," says Dean. He says they partner with some of the best Texas winemakers who have vast knowledge and experience in wine making. He adds that they always seek out new flavors in hopes of discovering which Texas wine suits various guests' tastes. Examples of the BarnHill wines include a full-bodied red, such as Sweet Sunsets; a medium-bodied, black-fruit driven Montepulciano; an earth mixed with plum and black cherry Malbec; the red plum and smoky thyme, allspice and cracked pepper tasting Alicante Bouschet; a dry white Roussanne; and a Sweet Moscato Blend. Specialty wines include ruby red Cabernet infused with dark chocolate, as well as Peach Tree Lane made from Moscato grapes with a hint of peach. CONTINUED >

Dean says their Tempranillo has significant red fruit flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberry, along with a hint of fig and notes of tobacco, leather, cedar and spice due to being aged in oak barrels. "This is a Texas standard," he adds. A new BarnHill fan favorite is Sweet Hazel wine, named in memory of the farm's miniature donkey, Hazel, who passed on last fall. At press time, team members were visiting rescues in search of another miniature donkey to be a companion to Daisy. Live events at the vineyard always start off with playing the National Anthem. Those 16 and older are allowed on-site, but must be accompanied by an adult at all times and have purchased a ticket. Any children under the age of 16 will not be permitted to enter the event. Corey says friendly dogs on leashes and birthday cakes are allowed, too. "The future is bright at BarnHill, the road is full of joy, and the great Texas wine is flowing," assures Joy. In addition to scheduled events, BarnHill is available for private and corporate rentals on Sundays.

Levi says the local real estate market is still active and maintaining steam, citing the housing appreciation rate was up 9.8% within Collin County in January 2023 to January 2022 comparison. "Sellers are still getting multiple offers on homes that are reasonably priced. Cash and the highest prices still get most of the attention in offers, however, some are equally interested in selling to a military veteran or having their home go to a good family," he states.

"We show how a home really looks, and we showcase it looking its best. We found these videos are truly appreciated by those who get emotionally attached to their houses, because they save them as remembrance pieces," he adds. A third LIDT video component that gets attention is their map-driven ones, during which they provide personal updates to locations or traffic-related elements that have changed since the last time online maps were corrected. Once housing closures occur, Levi says they check with clients at 30-, 60- and 90-day intervals. WHAT HAS YOUR CAREER PATH BEEN TO BECOME A FRANCHISE EXPERT? I spent 20 years as a mortgage banker. When the recession hit in 2007, I lost my income overnight, and I found myself wondering what was next. I threw myself into research and at the end of 2007, I became an independent franchise consultant. In 2013, I joined FranNet as a franchise specialist. I believe having walked a mile in my clients’ shoes, I’m uniquely positioned to help others navigate the same type of career transition and outcome.

WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS A FRANCHISE EXPERT? I'm a matchmaker. I have a portfolio of approximately 200 vetted franchises. I get to know my clients via an entrepreneur profile and by helping them build a business model. Once I understand their skill sets, interests, experience, finances and goals, I then match them to franchises I feel are a good fit on both sides. Franchises are not purchased; they are awarded. A franchise company will be just as selective on its end. We usually start with four different franchises, and 10 to 15 hours per week we'll engage and learn more about each franchise. I make sure the client is getting all their questions answered. From these discussions, we use a process of elimination. I coach my clients to gather enough information to be able to make informed decisions. It's a very in-depth process that typically takes 30 to 90 days. This needs to be a head-heart-and-gut decision, not one based on pure emotion.

Many of these franchises start as home-based businesses, allowing for a smaller initial investment.

WHO ARE YOUR CLIENTS AND HOW HAS FRANCHISING EVOLVED OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS? I have a diverse group of clients. I work with transitioning or laid-off executives, the underemployed and those unhappy with their corporate environment. I'm seeing more teachers who are looking for a change. I specialize in helping military veterans looking to transition from the service to being their own boss. Many clients come to me seeking an exit strategy from their previous career paths or looking to diversify their income. I'm working with more people nearing retirement who want to have something they can do after they retire from their current careers. I'm seeing spouses who gave up their careers who are looking for something to do or to bring in some extra money. Whether it’s an existing business owner, investor or someone currently employed, I can help them find a franchising solution. I've seen the franchising industry evolve, especially since the pandemic. I'm working with more women and seeing a wider range of ages. Multigenerational families are becoming more popular. Franchising is a perfect way to leave a legacy.

PULSE AND POISE MEDICAL TEAM PROVIDES PERSONALIZED, INTEGRATED HEALTH CARE MODELS FOR PATIENTS

Preventing, optimizing and preserving patients' health and well-being is the mission of Pulse and Poise, says Shopana Ganpath, M.D., the clinic's medical director and owner. "We leverage a variety of solutions, medical and more, for the complete wellness of our patients," she asserts, committing unabashedly to trying to keep people out of hospitalizations. The clinic opened in Frisco during last October at 25663 Smotherman Road, Suite 204. "We combine integrated health treatments with world-class equipment, streamlined processes and digital tools, so we have more time to focus on helping patients feel better, and to connect them with resources to help them stay that way," says Dr. Ganpath. She says as she saw more patients for primary care, they asked her about how, without surgeries, they could bolster energy or renew certain aspects of their health, particularly as they aged. "I then trained in hormone and testosterone replacement therapies, and that opened my eyes to the whole world of proactive wellness.

Because no two people are built the same, she says her philosophy is "not to treat by the [statistical] numbers" but to "treat by individual patients and their individual health care needs." Pulse and Poise primary care services include annual physicals, diabetes management, hypertension management, lipid management, asthma/ COPD management, smoking cessation, preventive care, pap smears, mental health screenings, depression and anxiety management, infection screenings, geriatric care, COVID-19 testing/ management and other acute illnesses. Lifestyle medicine services there reflect weight loss treatments and nutritional support. Aesthetic services cover anti-wrinkle treatments, fillers, skin or hair rejuvenation and peels. Additionally, this medical staff provides three types of skin treatments for situations such as skin complexion improvement, reducing skin irregularities, removing unwanted hair and micro needling to treat scars, enlarged pores, wrinkles and stretch marks. They also offer IV infusion services at the clinic for treating conditions such as dehydration and pneumonia. Dr. Ganpath says their IV infusion therapy commonly includes vitamins (vitamins C, B1, B6, B12), minerals (calcium, magnesium), coenzymes (NAD+) and antioxidants. In addition to boosting overall health and wellness, she adds that IV therapy helps with improving fatigue, age-related muscle and joint pains and sleep, as well as reducing inflammation and allergies, strengthening immune system protection against cold and flus, improving energy and endurance without the side effects of stimulants or high-caffeine energy drinks, improving metabolic efficiency, speeding up healing and improving brain function and cognition. Dr. Ganpath is a board-certified internal medicine physician, with extensive training and experience in medicine, aesthetics and overall patient wellness over the past 15 years. Center’s Sinai Grace Hospital, a part of Wayne State University. She obtained her medical degree from Pondicherry University in India. She's a member of the American Board of Internal Medicine, the American College of Physicians, and the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. "I enjoy the opportunities from primary care and overall wellness care that allow me to form strong relationships with my patients, and to help them feel more self-confident. It's a win-win situation," she states. "It's fun and inspiring to see people so happy." Dr. Ganpath is a mother of two boys and a girl, and says she enjoys music, interior design and cooking. She shares that giving back to the community is also important to her. While she donates to UNICEF and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, she says she also plans to donate a percentage of future clinic proceeds to local charities focused on assisting children and U.S. military veterans. Bethany Gidney works at the clinic as a nurse practitioner. She and Dr. Ganpath say they manage patients' chronic illnesses, but also refer patients to other medical specialists when necessary. Regarding leading-edge treatment devices and equipment used at Pulse and Poise, Dr. Ganpath spotlights non-surgical procedures, such as the Morpheus8 handpiece that uses both radiofrequency and micro needling to remodel faces and bodies. "This treatment stimulates collagen production and resurfaces skin to reveal a younger looking you. Areas that can be treated include eyes, face, neck, abdomen, back and legs," she adds. cross-section of Frisco business professionals that comprised the review committee.
