It's one of our favorite themes to cover each year: Kids and Pets. For many of us, they represent what's truly good with the world. Back to School already: Over this summer, Frisco ISD was seeking school supply donations for the 8,000 economically disadvantaged students. District representatives typically provide 8,500 students with school supply kits and backpacks for the upcoming school year. If you'd like to assist, call 469.633.6000 to determine what else is needed before school starts Aug. 10. We're also shining a spotlight on an event scheduled for Aug. 20: "Music on Main Frisco" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers indicate their objective is to "flood Main Street with incredible music to support the arts culture in the heart of Frisco." They are partnering with 10-plus businesses in The Rail District on Main Street and have nearly a dozen artists performing at these locations. They indicate they will conduct these events on third Saturday of each month for the rest of the year. Information regarding Music On Main can be located at Facebook and Instagram, or the website MusicOnMainFrisco.org. Here's to the dog (and cat) days of summer! New Bicycle Route Creates Pathway Between Frisco and The Colony
The Frisco Chamber of Commerce golf tournament, scheduled for Oct. 31 at Stonebriar Country Club, provides the opportunity for local businesses to build positive relationships within the business community, and to reward employees with a day out of the office. In addition to playing in the tournament, local businesses are participating as tent sponsors, banner sponsors, player gift bag donors and volunteers. Tumbles Frisco, a gymnastics center for youths, opened in Frisco at 7151 Preston Road, Ste. 141. The facility offers children’s gym classes, STEAM classes, parties and summer camps for ages 4 months to 12 years old. The summer camp is for youths 3 to 10 years of age. A new bike route was completed for southwest Frisco, extending for nearly 4 miles from The Colony to western limits of the Lone Star Ranch Neighborhood. The new bike route connects five Frisco parks, three schools and existing off-street trails. The route uses an existing bike lane on 4th Army Drive, and adds a new, buffered bike lane on Timber Ridge Drive. The route also uses wayfinding signs and lane markings on existing roadways.

Congratulations to Wakeland’s theatre students and directors who won Best Musical, Best Direction and Best Crew & Technical Execution for their production Curtains, the Musical, a production about a murder that occurred backstage. Notably, recent graduates Hayley Delich and Garrett Bohannan also were each awarded $2,500 college scholarships through Broadway Dallas.

New Camouflaged Telecommunications Tower Set For Frisco-McKinney-Frisco Border City council members approved a new telecommunications tower project to be established at 3109 S. Custer Road in McKinney. Referenced as a stealth bell tower, spokespeople state its primary carrier would be Verizon Wireless. Stealth towers are designed to hide their unappealing appearances by blending into surroundings.
Dinosaurs Live! Returns To The Heard From Sept. 3 through Feb. 20, 2023, children and those young-at-heart who visit Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney can let their imaginations run wild gazing at 11 life-size animatronic dinosaurs. During the 17th Annual "Dinosaurs Live! Life-Size Animatronic Dinosaurs" exhibit, these animatronic dinosaurs will move and roar. This exhibit will offer interesting facts about both herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs, and an outdoor hadrosaur fossil dig to inspire future paleontologists.

grand love Making A Difference To Encourage And Support Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Grandparents are increasingly assuming the role of raising their grandchildren due to families’ crises, including incarcerations, military deployments and other life-altering circumstances. When longtime Prosper community leaders, Ray and Lena Smith, saw the serious challenges encountered by grandparents on fixed incomes in these situations, they took action to assist by establishing the ‘Grand Love’ nonprofit in 2019. Lena says Grand Love raises funds to help grandparents who are unexpectedly handling delayed retirement, navigating school systems, bridging generational gaps, finding mental health resources and working through court systems -- all due to devoting themselves to parental responsibilities for grandchildren. Both of the Smiths fully understand how vital it is to have ample cash flow to raise children, as they personally experienced becoming parents all over again by adopting their grandsons. Ray serves as Farmers Bank president, and has been the mayor of Prosper for the past 15 years. Lena is an innovative North Texas real estate specialist who “believes nothing is impossible.” Shannon Mason, Grand Love director of operations, says the number of related family situations keeps surging as she highlights the following national US statistics: • More than 3 million grandparents are the sole providers for their grandchildren. • 8-10 million grandparents are primary providers.
• 1.7 million single grandmothers are the sole provider (49% are unemployed). • 25% of these heroes fall below the poverty line. • 25% of these grandparents are disabled. “For every child in the state foster programs, there are 25 being raised by grandparents or other relatives, saving taxpayers $6 billion per year in Texas alone,” says Shannon. Grand Love aids grandparents by providing food, utility assistance and holiday assistance. ‘Grand Summer’ is a program that assists with sending grandchildren to camps. ‘Grand Scholarships’ provide financial assistance to send grandchildren to college. ‘Grand Arts’ sponsors can ‘Adopt a Grand Family’ by providing a one-time or monthly support for grandchildren to pursue the arts through classes or camps, including music, dance, theater, drawing and painting. Shannon says the nonprofit also needs lawyers, therapists, tutors, doctors, dentists and orthodontists willing to bless these families with their volunteer expertise and services. Annually, Ray and Lena host a “Farms to Table” dinner and silent auction to raise money for Grand Love. This year’s event will be Sept. 10 from 5:30-8:30 pm. Inclusiveness, diversity and belonging provide well-rounded and inspiring outcomes, especially on screen. Despite growing up while combating mobility and speech challenges from cerebral palsy, Frisco teenager Surya Kasibhatla remembers wanting to be an actor. He says his family set about exploring those options.
Hailing from India, his family discovered through their network of friends and health specialists that a major film producer in Bollywood was seeking a teen with cerebral palsy to play a specific role. After casting calls and auditions, the then 13-year-old from Frisco found himself on a movie set in Mumbai alongside some of India's biggest film stars. "People like me can be confident, hopeful and motivated because it doesn't matter what you have. Any person can do anything," asserts 14-year-old Surya. The film, Jalsa, is the story of a hit-and-run incident that sets in motion the efforts of a journalist, a raging mother and a police department all caught in an ethical dilemma -- that the truth is rarely pure and never simple. The movie was released on Amazon Prime Video earlier this year. It's the first film originating from Bollywood to feature a disabled actor.

Maya Menon (Vidya Balan) is a thoroughbred journalist who is presented as the face of truth by her digital channel. One night, a little indiscretion spirals into an accident that threatens to derail Maya’s career and life. Her life is her specially-abled son Ayush (Surya Kasibatla) who spends more time with the house-maid Rukhsana (Shefali Shah) and his grandmother Rukmini (Rohini Hattangadi) than with his busy and supposedly single mother. Ayush’s father Anand (Manav Kaul) is just a lively filler, perhaps somebody who could not keep up pace with Maya. Co-starring actor Shefali Shah stated that Surya's on-camera abilities represented "something you can't be taught; you're just born with it." CONTINUED >

Surya says people who have firm belief in confidence can conquer the world. The next goal on his list is to start a technology company that helps others with cerebral palsy. He says his long-term mission is to establish a company that develops an "open-source voice-based operating system." With his own YouTube channel, Surya is known for being a vegetarian foodie, piano player, music lover, cricket enthusiast and nifty coder. "I have cerebral palsy by birth, but I don't let that hinder my ability to learn new skills," he assures.

Freshly made pet food that's sourced locally and delivered quickly at its peak of freshness can be standard meals for beloved dogs and cats, vow Kim and Mike Caley, owners of Pet Wants Frisco. The Caleys say they offer fresh, high-quality pet food, treats and wellness products that are delivered for free, next day locally, directly to owners' homes. "Our products are 100% free of corn, wheat, soy, sugar, dye and by-products," says Mike. "We want to help pet owners with their pets be able to eat for health and vitality. We like to think of it as nutrition you can trust." Before the Caleys began operating this mobile business about three years ago, Mike says they saw area pets needing fresh, high-quality pet food, often for specific health reasons, and that pet parents needed resources to turn to with their pet nutrition questions.

"Dry food can end up sitting around for really long periods of time before it's ever purchased, and in those cases, the vitamins can disintegrate. Alternatively, our food, which is based on formulas developed by Kansas State University experts, contains whole ingredients with USDA-certified proteins," Mike explains. Mike says their line of pet food products mesh especially well with these types of pet situations: • Addressing pet allergies stemming from food. • Health-specific challenges, particularly working with veterinarians or veterinary nutritionists to identify customized solutions. • Picky eaters with sophisticated palates. • Overweight concerns or weight management plans. • Athletic dogs that need more calories and energy. • Sensitive stomach issues. "When you think about it, skin is the largest organ a pet has. And it's the last organ to receive nutrition from food consumed. Dogs and cats are carnivores by nature, and their diet should reflect their natural foods as closely as possible. We start with fresh food, like salmon, duck, whitefish and chicken as premium protein sources meant for consumption by your dog and/or cat. And we do it in small batches. The shorter the shelf life, the better the nutrition," Kim states. For cats, they offer an adult/kitten dry food version, one for lean cats and another that's grain free with duck/herring flavor. For dogs, the dry versions are the following options: salmon/brown rice; lamb/brown rice; chicken/brown rice; puppy; chicken/turkey grain free; white fish/ duck grain free; and senior/less active. Additionally, they have 19 types of dog chews, nearly 20 different high-value dog treats, 19 supplements -- some in oil forms, some as powders and some containing hemp. Pet Wants Frisco provides personal delivery to the Collin County area, including Frisco, McKinney, Prosper, Little Elm/The Colony, Celina, Addison and surrounding communities. Tips For At-Home Dog Training END TRAINING SESSIONS ON POSITIVE NOTES AND WAGGING TAILS Be sure to think through and decide on house rules, meaning what dogs can and can’t do. Are they allowed on beds or the furniture? Are parts of the house off limits? If rules are solidly determined, it can avoid confusion for everyone involved.

Play The Odds: Set dogs up for success by not asking too quickly for behaviors that aren't likely to happen.
Don’t Repeat Yourself: Repeating the same cue over and over in rapid succession can be counterproductive when training dogs. Change order of commands to ensure dogs are truly understanding them, not just an expected routine.
Be Generous With Rewards: The more difficult the request, the higher the 'paycheck.' Remember dogs decide what true rewards should be, whether that's food, praise, free run time, head pats, special toy or snuggles.

No Positive Punishment: Reward-based training has been scientifically proven to increase the rate of learning, encourages dogs to work harder for rewards, eliminates the need for forceful or aversive training tools, and fosters a human-canine bond built upon mutual trust and respect, rather than one on a dog’s desire to avoid fear, pain or punishment.
Give Pups Choices: People control learning conditions, but remember that behavior is conditional.
Train On Dog Time: Puppies and dogs live in the moment. Two minutes after they’ve done something, they’ve already forgotten it. So when a pup is doing something undesired, use the chosen training technique right away so they have a chance to associate between the behavior and the correction.
