"Rexy," a full-size T-Rex skeleton, will debut at the new Frisco Public Library this fall. Through a public contest, voters chose from among four names submitted. Why a dinosaur? The library's design team indicated they were looking for a unique item that presented a learning opportunity, was visually interesting, took advantage of the ceiling height and scale of the building, and was of particular interest to younger library guests. A dinosaur fit all the criteria.

Hotter 'n Firecrackers 5K & Glow Run will be held July 3 as part of Frisco Freedom Fest. Light up the night while runing through Frisco Square with flashing LED lights and fluorescent gear. Register online: RunSignUp.com/Race/TX/Frisco/ HotternFirecrackers. What more could be stated about barbecue that's been touted in O The Oprah Magazine, Forbes and the Food Network, as some of the best 'cue available in the United States? Why, it would be that those in the Frisco, McKinney and Prosper region are fabulously fortunate to have this Hutchins BBQ championship cuisine in their backyard. The word “barbecue” may come from the Caribbean word “barbacoa," but the Hutchins family has stamped Texas all over their tantalizing style of pitmastery. Texas barbecue has a number of influences, including the meat-smoking preservation techniques of 19th-century immigrants from Germany and Czechoslovakia who settled in the central part of the state. Those hard-working settlers then opened grocery stores and meat markets, such that their influences live on. Owners Tim and Trey Hutchins are setting new, current barbecue standards, however. In fact, when ADSN-TV visited Hutchins' Frisco location last fall regarding how the Dallas Cowboys fans fueled tailgate parties, the staff made a beeline to Hutchins BBQ because they said they were told it was "the best in Texas." Not bad, given the restaurant's more humble beginnings as smaller but staple barbecue locations of devoted diners in both McKinney and Frisco since the early 1990s.

PRIDE AND PERSEVERANCE A devastating fire in 2012 forced the Hutchins McKinney location to close for five months. Another fire swept through their smokehouse during 2021. But like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the close-knit, dedicated restaurant team

reopened, and in one fell swoop, was counted among Texas Monthly‘s Top 50 BBQ joints in the world. "Locally, the Texas Monthly list reflects the gold standard of barbecue. We're pleased and super happy to have had the honor of making this list three consecutive times [2013, 2017, 2021]. We're really proud of that, and believe it speaks to our ability to achieve quality and consistency at that highest level," shares Tim. Considering that the Texas Monthly 2021 list reportedly was compiled by 32 staffers and three freelancers spanning 411 barbecue joints, getting into the ranking is quite a feat -- especially when considering the list has been produced only once every four years since 1997. The publication's staff states they do not announce their visits ahead of time and that they pay for their own food. "Every few months, we honestly look up, feeling truly blessed by God with a successful business, and we credit our incredible team and the generous support of our local customers for it. Everyone's helped keep us going during setbacks and the pandemic," Trey says. Cooking Hutchins briskets is a 16to 18-hour process and labor of love, confirms Trey. Even with the tumultuous past couple of years prompted by unpredictable COVID-19 circumstances, this smoked meat mecca team prepared a combined 1.6 million to 1.8 million pounds of brisket for both locations. "That comes out to about 2,400 briskets each week, which enabled us to exceed our 2019 sales," he adds. Tim says they all take pride in hard work, remaining open seven days a week for up to 70 hours a week, to service customers. CONTINUED >

TALKING TEXAS TWINKIES Hutchins introduced Texas Twinkies in 2014 and has been selling thousands. They're now available to anyone in the entire U.S., a dozen for $65, along with all of Hutchins' smoked brisket, sausage, rubs and apparel. Shipments go out every Tuesday morning, with a two-day delivery zone from the ship date. They arrive at customers' doors, vacuum-sealed and semi-frozen, to be reheated. Jalapeño poppers are rumored to have been invented in Texas, many decades ago; wrapped in bacon or sausage, they went by the name "armadillo eggs." However, many locals credit Hutchins for putting them squarely on modern-day's popularity map. "We call ours the 'original' Texas Twinkies because, to our knowledge, we were the first to insert brisket inside the poppers," reveals Trey. "We now sell 7,000 to 8,000 Twinkies a week."

SNEAK PEEK AT NEW HUTCHINS PRODUCT LINE At press time, an innovative member of the Hutchins team was devoting a large portion of his workdays to developing fresh sausage options for new menu choices. Future flavors and combinations will be in addition to their existing Frito Chili pie sausage, original smoked sausage or jalapeño Cheddar sausage. "We want to take craft sausage to a whole other level. We'll likely sell these craft sausages on select days, with offering new options, such as Pepper Jack or Texas hot link sausage," announces Trey. Tim says they feel very solid as sought-after producers of the sacred Texas trinity (brisket, pork spareribs and sausage, served with potato salad, coleslaw and beans), and now are looking forward to showcasing more of their creative culinary skills. "One of our primary goals this year is to become one of the top North Texas restaurants for craft, in-house sausages, even to the point of introducing seasonal sausages," he adds. Adding that great barbecue sauce can complement meats in an important manner, Tim reminds us that their sauce also comes from an internal, proprietary recipe. Day-tripping drivers from throughout Texas and beyond reveal they make this Hutchins smoky sensation a must-see and must-taste on the list of ‘have-to-visit’ destinations. THESE UNIQUE ‘PARENT PARTNERS’ HELP BALANCE WORK/LIFE NEEDS FOR FAMILIES Hello, Nanny! co-owners Stephanie Fornaro (left) and Marie Mouat, with their own children.

FAM ILY CA R E | LOCAL SERVI CE S

HELLO, NANNY! Qualified career nannies provide an all-important array of childcare and household benefits to families of various combinations, asserts Stephanie Fornaro, co-owner and family intake specialist of Hello, Nanny! -- a newly launched boutique nanny agency based in Plano. Stephanie and co-owner Marie Mouat, who also serves as nanny placement specialist, say they launched the agency to provide local parents with career nannies who are highly competent, thoroughly screened, compatible and tremendously reliable. "What differentiates our company is that our nannies have a wealth of skills they provide, oftentimes approaches that we haven't thought of ourselves as parents," says Stephanie, who says her nanny routinely got compliance from her son in ways that she, herself, didn't know to try. "Parents typically think they have to take on everything and do it all. With a nanny who does light housekeeping, such as children's sheets, and some meal prepping, I could come home and enjoy being a mom," she adds. "Hiring a nanny was one of the best decisions we ever made." She says advanced levels of interpersonal and child development techniques are what sets apart Hello, Nanny! representatives, especially from typical babysitters and childcare workers. "Nannies can be an especially

essential augmentation for single parents, and parents who travel for jobs," she adds. "Knowledgeable nannies bring so many helpful tips to the table. And our focus is on cultivating lasting relationships and providing value through these partnerships," asserts Stephanie. Parents being able to disconnect from 24/7 parenting safely and with peace of mind so they can focus on each other, themselves, or dating is an added bonus of nannies, she says. "Having children often leaves little time for moms and dads, but having a nanny changes that, it allows married couples to still date, too." Marie adds, "We have a streamlined approach to providing a successful matchmaking process that's less stressful than attempting the journey alone to find caregivers." In general, Marie says three in 10 resumes for their positions are forwarded to the next round, with one in three making a final cut to be considered. She outlines the nanny interview process as having at least five separate components. "Of course, it starts with someone's training and education, but we go far beyond resumes, references and background checks," she adds. Other considerations of the Hello, Nanny! proprietary process include elaborating on work experiences, verifying certifications or professional training. Marie says they also explore customized approaches to child care, CONTINUED >

such as favorite games, activities, educational practices, parenting styles and emergency procedures. Then she says lifestyle factors are discussed, such as a nanny's hobbies, willingness to cook or do laundry, ability to travel with families, affinity to sports or arts and use of social media tools. "Another area we explore is what job description and compensation someone is seeking," says Marie. "Along with their interest or ability to handle weekend or evening hours, overall availability, type of housework preferred and their personal transportation status." On the flipside, Stephanie says the potential match and offering with parents include ensuring that compensation, benefits, schedules, household responsibilities, parenting styles, start dates and employee status (W2 / private or hybrid) are rigorously discussed and agreed upon. Marie and Stephanie provide draft agreements and unique working trials once a match has been made. They offer three tiers of services: a 90-day program with a replacement guarantee; a 120-day guarantee; and a 1-year guarantee.

22

FAM ILY CA R E | LOCAL SERVI CE S

"Stay-at-home moms also can incorporate nannies because they, too, deserve lunch breaks, to be able to run errands, and showers," reminds Stephanie. In lieu of the costs of commercial daycare, Stephanie says hiring a nanny can be a big cost-savings, given the money saved in transportation and the benefits of children being able to stay in their own homes. "Nannies also come in handy on date nights or on vacations. While traveling, it's more relaxing to share child supervision, and you can have the best of both worlds," she suggests. She says parents who are the best candidates for Hello, Nanny! placements are ones who approach the arrangement with open hearts and minds, provide mutual love and respect, and treat nannies as extensions of the family. 844.26NANNY (844.266.2669) HelloNanny.com

‘AMERICAN SONG CONTEST’ TV CONTESTANT GRANT KNOCHE HAILS FROM FRISCO ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY NBC/AMERICAN SONG CONTEST Representing Texas in the NBC music reality competition television series 'American Song Contest' was Frisco native Grant Knoche. One contestant from all 50 U.S. states, five territories and Washington, D.C., competed for the title of Best Original Song. Grant confirms he was super enthused to represent his home state of Texas, although he currently resides in Los Angeles. Grant was one of the 10 talented finalists, finishing fourth in the competition. Grant, 19, confides that he taught himself to write and produce music in his childhood bedroom. He previously was a part of KIDZ BOP, an American children’s music group that produces family-friendly cover versions of pop songs and related media. Apart from being a singer, he is also a self-taught piano player, saying he learned how to play by watching YouTube tutorials online.

He's also a dancer who's been performing since age 7, and notes that his favorite style is hip hop. The American Song Contest took place between March 21 and May 9, among the 56 top contestants. The live competition consisted of three rounds as the acts competed in a series of Qualifying Rounds, followed by Semi-Finals, and the ultimate Grand Final where one state’s/territory’s singer emerged victorious: Oklahoma. The hosts and executive producers of “American Song Contest" were Snoop Dogg and Kelly Clarkson. Snoop is a multi-platinum artist, actor and entertainment icon with three decades of experience in the music industry. Kelly, a talk show host and the first-ever winner of “American Idol,” officially joined the NBC family in 2018 as a coach on “The Voice,” winning the competition in Seasons 14, 15, 17 and 21.

HOW FANS KNOW GRANT Grant's synth-driven, deep bass and intimate pop songs have all been written and produced by him. On his way to gathering more than 900,000 followers, Grant has spent most of his life on the road performing more than 160 shows across America, including on "Today," at Radio City Music Hall, Woodstock and other locales.

GRANT QUALIFIED FOR SEMI-FINAL ROUND Grant opened the live round three qualifying show with his original song, "Mr. Independent." He says the song has a great message behind it that really represents Texas in a great way. Grant's debut EP, "Color Me Blue," was featured on multiple top playlists and he was recently called out by Ones to Watch as "One of today's finest rising pop stars." He competed on May 2 in the semifinals.

WHAT GRANT ENJOYED MOST ABOUT THE CONTEST "Honestly, one of the best parts of the experience was getting to meet all of the other wonderful talented artists in the competition! I’ve gotten to bond with and make so many new lifelong friends. Being with such amazing people throughout the process has really helped me soak in the experience even more. It’s been a great time."

MR. INDEPENDENT'S FUTURE PL ANS "As for future plans, I’m planning on releasing a ton more music. I have over 20 songs in my pocket at the moment, so I’m figuring out the release plan for all of them. The thought process is that I’ll release singles and build-up to the release of my second EP in mid/late 2022." CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / F R I S C O

FRISCO ROOTS “I’m so grateful to have grown up in Frisco,” says Grant. “I spent the majority of my childhood in Frisco, which shaped and molded me into the person I have become. Frisco is family-orientated, homey, real, and has provided me a strong foundation to pursue my passions.” Next Step Dance, Elevate Life Church, and Creativation are a couple of places that really inspired him to be independent, driven, and strong, he asserts. “I’m so blessed to have been raised in a city and state that’s so proud and independent, and I hope to share that with others through my song, MR. INDEPENDENT!” To follow Grant’s journey and music: Instagram @grantknoche Spotify verified artist Grant Knoche Apple Music artist/grant-knoche Twitter @GrantCKnoche Hoo.Be/GrantKnoche “American Song Contest” is a reality TV show based on the worldwide phenomenon “Eurovision Song Contest,” which has been a mega-hit overseas for the past six decades.

RESPONDER IMPACT ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

Donations Go Toward Supporting, Counseling And Spiritual Encouragement For First Responders

Servant leadership is in the DNA of first responders. However, the life expectancy of first responders is 15 years less than the general population. Randy Creech, founder and director of Responder Impact, provides the tools needed to engage, equip and empower local police, firefighters, paramedics and EMT ambulance crews, who face these types of unique emotional and spiritual challenges. Randy also is City of Frisco's fire and police chaplain. For 35 years, he served with a community ministry before launching Responder Impact as a nonprofit in 2011. "Responder Impact assists first responders who are in law enforcement, fire safety and emergency response services as they engage in serving their community. We support the needs of first responders through one-on-one spiritual mentoring, small group Bible studies, individual interaction and resources that assist with marriage and family relationships," Randy explains. Randy says national statistics indicate first responders are two to three times as likely to die from suicide than from accidents in the line of duty. Additionally, divorce rates are as high as 84% in some departments. On average, 10-30% of responders suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

28

H OM E TOWN H E R O | L IFE + CULTURE

"The majority of first responders love what they do and understand the cost of their unique vocation. But, over time, doing ‘what business requires’ will often affect their emotional and physical health, and the relationships that are most important to them," says Randy. "That's why we are there to listen and walk through life's challenges with them." Tax-deductible financial donations are received to provide support and counseling for Responder Impact participants. In-person support is provided by assisting in leading small group discussions or accompanying first responders on much-needed excursions, such as fishing activities. A six-week pre-marriage preparation opportunity also is offered for first responders and their partners, in addition to Responder Impact providing -- when finances are available -- the registration for first responders to attend the ‘Family Life Weekend to Remember’ marriage conference. Couples pay for their hotel expenses. "Building each other up for life's next battles is our mission," declares Randy. randy@responderimpact.org ResponderImpact.org
