2022 A New Beginning

January 2022 PUBLISHER

Brian Caspari | brian.caspari@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Julie Brown Patton | julie.patton@citylifestyle.com

It's a new year, and that means a fresh start. I always look at new beginnings as though my report card has straight "As." With how busy life becomes, it's a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we've been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what's truly a priority. I have learned that to achieve your goals or master your resolutions, you must first write them down and make them public. So here we go... • Be present when I am with others (in-person and virtually) • Live like there is no tomorrow • Continue volunteering with the organizations supporting those in career transition • Increase the intensity and quantity of my exercising and workouts • Continue to find fun and share with others Our January edition is dedicated to health and wellness in the New Year: eating right, physical fitness and purposeful connections. Our hope for you in this new year is one of wellness, improved health and personal satisfaction. If you don't already follow us on social media, please do and share any or all of your goals/resolutions for 2022. Here's to a safe, health and happy 2022!

Whether needing a physical exam, seeking family medicine natural remedies, recovering from an accident, healing from or contemplating a serious surgical procedure, or simply looking to improve overall flexibility, one Frisco therapeutic facility integrates physical medicine and medical services to derive lasting results. Wellness Solutions professionals incorporate and blend clinically proven treatments such as exercise rehabilitation, chiropractic, massage therapy, decompression and cold laser therapy to strengthen and condition body function. "Increasing mobility improves range of motion, which facilitates healing and protects the body from injury. We apply physical medicine methods to treat chronic back pain, knee pain, neck pain, shoulder issues, elbow pain, migraines, surgical recovery, sports rehabilitation, and strength and conditioning," explains Sandra Caldwell, M.D., and Wellness Solutions medical director. She emphasizes their patients also seek relief from non-injury conditions, such as painful ankles due to diabetes, as well as

trigger point injections, ultrasounds and medical weight loss, often with vitamins and supplement consultations. In fact, Dr. Caldwell says the Wellness Solutions mission is to offer the most thorough environment possible of medical treatments, rehabilitation therapy, chiropractic and wellness counseling. Staff resources include a director of rehabilitation, neurodiagnostic specialist, physicians assistant, nurse practitioner and physical therapist. They also provide telehealth services for ill patients and routine medical visits. For physical-related treatments, Dr. David Bowden, Wellness Solutions founder and clinical director, says they provide regenerative therapy, spinal decompression, physical therapy, sports rehabilitation, manual therapy and chiropractic care. "Many of our patients immediately ask, 'How quick can you fix me?'" says Alexis Pagan, certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist at Wellness Solutions. "But each person's injury or situation is different and we approach each in a custom way." CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / F R I S C O

Loren Hamby, Wellness Solutions operations manager, says their wellness services prior to the COVID-19 pandemic also included on-site workshops, corporate wellness outreach programs to provide health fairs and clinics for personnel health checks, and motivational classes in proper exercising and stress reduction. She adds that they hope to resume in-person community outreach and health support soon. Student athletes from throughout the Frisco Independent School District also are treated at the Wellness Solutions center. This is an area of special interest to Dr. Bowden, who graduated from Plano Senior High School with a firsthand understanding of the athlete mentality through his years of team sports, including playing football through the semi-pro level. He also competed in adventure races, strongman competitions and powerlifting. Drs. Kyle and Caitlyn Poupart

A DENTAL STARTUP OPENS WITH VISION OF BRINGING PATIENTS OUTSTANDING CARE EXPERIENCES ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON

It'll be challenging not to smile while at Texas Smile Co. That's the promise of Texas natives Drs. Kyle and Caitlyn Poupart, who are the owners and dentists of a new dentistry practice just launched in Frisco. Working with all ages of patients, Dr. Kyle says they are accustomed to seeing patients as young as six months of age. "Kids begin building familiarity of a dental office, and it gives us the chance to discuss teeth development with parents. We appreciate taking enough time to build trust and have relationships with patients so we all know each other personally. It also makes it nice to be able to discuss other things going on in our lives." Dr. Caitlyn says they handle practically every aspect of dental care, including cavity prevention, regular cleanings, clear-line braces, crowns, root canals, bridges, implants, dentures and sedation options to help reduce stress or anxiety. Both dentists have been practicing since 2015, after being accepted in a rigorous Early Admissions Dental Program that required them to complete their bachelor's degrees in biology in three years instead of the traditional four. Dr. Kyle earned his bachelor’s from Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, and Dr. Caitlyn earned hers from The University of Texas at San Antonio. They then both attended the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio for Dental School, which is where they met each other. After dental school, they intentionally moved back to the DFW area. Dentistry runs deep in this family. Dr. Caitlyn's mother is a dental hygienist, and Dr. Kyle's great uncle was a dentist. In the spirit of being dedicated community supporters, the Pouparts are working with the regional nonprofit, ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship, to donate CONTINUED >

The ManeGait group assists children and adults with disabilities, as well as military veterans, to move beyond their boundaries through the healing power of the horse and the dedication of a professional, caring community. ManeGait is located on 24 acres in Collin County. The Pouparts indicate they wanted to launch their own practice to create an environment that's built on personal relationships with patients. "We listen and take the time to hear your needs and work with you to select the right option for you and your family. This isn’t just a dental practice; this is a family, and we're honored to have you join us," says Dr. Kyle.

HAIR RESTORATION ENJOY A FULLER-HAIRED VISAGE STARING BACK IN THE MIRROR AND CONFIDENCEBOOSTING BENEFITS

26

H AIR CA R E | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

Hair loss is more common than one may think: approximately 50 million men and 30 million women in the United States are affected. But aesthetic advancements are making it a problem of the past. Jeff Nuziard, founder of Sexual Wellness Centers of Texas LLC, offers state-of-theart REGENhair treatment, which he says can safely, quickly and reliably replace lost hair, providing the life-transforming, confidence-boosting results.

HAIR LOSS CAUSES Family history, or heredity, seems to be a major factor, but the exact pattern is unclear. Other factors, such as nutritional deficiencies, stress, aging, hormonal fluctuations, drug use and certain biological issues (thyroid problems), also play a part.

A hormonal condition known as androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, is the primary cause of hair loss. It’s due to the increased action of androgens, or hormones, such as testosterone (and the highly hair-destructive dihydrotestosterone), that drive development of male characteristics. Androgenic alopecia progresses predictably, forming an “M” shape at the top of the forehead as the hairline recedes. It also involves a thinning/loss of hair at the crown of the head.

HAIR LOSS AFFECTS GROWTH CYCLE As each strand of hair emerges from the follicle, it begins a growth cycle that generally continues for several years. Next, it enters a resting phase, then eventually falls out during its shedding phase, with a new hair ready to take its place. But hair loss, like the type caused by an androgen imbalance, can wreak havoc with this process. It shortens the growth cycle and leads to progressively thinner, weaker strands of hair and, eventually, the death of the follicle.

REGENHAIR

Jeff Nuziard, SWC of Texas founder, in consultation. Photo by Brandi Richards

Jeff says REGENhair is a laser-based hair restoration technique and a viable alternative for hair transplant procedures. "Before treatment, we perform a thorough medical examination to identify the cause of hair loss and devise a personalized treatment plan. You will then receive a number of treatment sessions, each lasting between 45 and 60 minutes." "Even though patients generally experience no discomfort, we offer multiple anesthetic options, so you’re relaxed and comfortable throughout the treatment," he adds. REGENhair uses reinvigorating capabilities of photons, or light energy. Applying low-intensity light energy to the scalp stimulates a body’s natural regenerative powers, improving circulation and inducing the growth of new hairs that are up to four times thicker than the thinning strands. If necessary, they also can perform a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) treatment, which works with a patient's own blood that then injects the most nutritious, revitalizing platelets into scalp areas where hair is thinning. "You can expect to enjoy visible results within a month or two, with a hair-growing peak occurring between four to six months after your REGENhair treatment." info@swcoftexas.com 2955 Eldorado Parkway, Suite 120, Frisco 972.761.5333 SWCofTexas.com

The Cold Plunge

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition 32

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FI TNE S S

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. Mike and Ryan both previously owned their own flotation therapy centers. Early pioneers in that space, they discovered they shared many of the same values, business practices and interests. Therefore, the formulation of a business together became inevitable. With finding himself feeling sick on a consistent basis, Ryan found solace in cold plunging. With an engineering background and having built his own chest freezer, Mike found cold plunging tubs on the market unattainable. Together, they set out to create a more realistic solution for half the price. “Everything else on the market was $10k, and it’s not really achievable for a lot of people,” they say. But as the business began to set in, so did the 2020 pandemic, forcing both to shut down their primary businesses, which turned out to be a blessing. It offered time for Mike to begin designing the product that would look, feel and cost significantly different. In a short 12 months, The Cold Plunge quickly garnered attention as a result of organic growth, wellness influencers who embraced the product, and a pandemic that forced people to focus on their health and added time at home. It’s also worth noting that the likes of Tony Hawk and Kerri Walsh Jennings swear by their cold plunges for their athletic recovery. Everyone from homeowners to commercial businesses are hopping on the train to add these beautiful accessories into their space. Hot or cold environment, home or commercial studio—the tubs were built with design and longevity in mind. “The one thing I’m still bullish on is I know it works,” Ryan says. “Anyone who gets a unit from us, their true testimony is that this would go onto their top three things they would NOT give up for their health and wellness. Right now the cold plunge is “kind of trendy, it’s kind of cool, but it’s effective. Two to three minutes, or even 60 seconds a day—there are very few things out there that give you the return you get from this.” The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.” Ryan shares his sentiment on doing something uncomfortable first thing in the morning to make the biggest, most positive impact on your day. What you can expect to feel is, “I did something first thing in the morning that I didn’t want to do, but I know it is good for me.” Ryan also knows over the next one to two years they are going to learn so much about cold plunging. As more people do it, there will be more anecdotal data and validity to the practice.

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
