LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Explore Edition There’s something about July that makes everything feel a little lighter. The days stretch longer, the nights feel made for gathering and adventure suddenly feels just a bit more possible. This month, we’re embracing that sense of freedom and the joy of saying “yes” to something new. Personally, some of my favorite summer memories have come from the simplest choices: joining a Frederick Social Sports team without knowing a soul, hiking a new trail on a whim and turning an ordinary Saturday into a spontaneous day trip. What started as a way to get outside quickly became something much more—through FSS, I’ve met people who’ve become my weekly constants and unexpected anchors through each season. It’s proof that sometimes, showing up is all it takes for something good to begin. From local escapes to fresh ideas for summer entertaining, this issue is packed with inspiration to connect, explore and say yes to the unexpected. You’ll also find a full lineup of Fourth of July festivities and a sneak peek at S.H.E. Week 2025— where we shine a light on women moving our community forward with purpose. Here’s to a month of movement, summer magic and making the most of every sun-drenched moment.

In a world that urges us to go faster, be more and do it all—it’s rare to find a moment that invites pause, reflection and realignment. Yet each year, S.H.E. Week offers exactly that: a space not only to gather, but to grow. Now in its seventh year, S.H.E. Week 2025 builds on a powerful legacy of connection and courage—this time with a theme that propels us forward: Momentum. Organized by the Frederick County Chamber of Commerce, S.H.E. Week (August 4–8, 2025) is more than a conference—it’s a curated experience designed

to spark meaningful progress in the lives of women across industries, backgrounds and stages of life. From inspiring keynotes to powerful conversations and new connections, every moment is designed to spark ideas, build confidence and move you forward with purpose. This year’s programming kicks off with an energizing conference day, featuring powerhouse speakers like Nicole Sherry, Senior Director of Field Operations for the Baltimore Orioles and Amy DeLouise, award-winning multimedia expert and founder of #GALSNGEAR. Midweek brings S.H.E. Pitch—a live business competition where finalists present their ideas for a chance to win over $10,000 in prizes, plus the People’s Choice Award. The week closes with the SHERO Awards and Networking Night, celebrating those who exemplify Strength, Heart and Equality. It’s an unforgettable evening that sends you home inspired and ready to drive your journey with purpose. To make the most of the week, the Chamber’s Women in Business Committee offers five simple tips:

1. COME WITH INTENTION + CURIOSITY

Know your “why” for attending. Ask: What does momentum look like for me right now? Bring a strategic mindset, but stay open to surprises—you never know what (or who) might inspire your next move.

2. PACK WITH PURPOSE

Bring a planner or notebook for capturing insights, business cards for meaningful connections and anything else that helps you stay grounded and present.

3. ENGAGE WITH HEART

S.H.E. Week is built on strength, heart and equality. Come ready to cheer others on, share vulnerably and celebrate. The energy in the room is part of the magic.

“For any movement to gain momentum it must start with a small action.” 4. SAY YES TO THE UNEXPECTED

Growth often comes from surprising places. Ask a question, tell your story, try something new. Stepping outside your comfort zone is part of building momentum.

5. MAKE SPACE TO REFLECT + ACT

The week doesn’t end when the event does. Block time to process what you’ve heard. Revisit notes, follow up with new friends and take your next step forward—whatever that may be. Whether it’s your first S.H.E. Week or your seventh—this is your starting line. Visit FrederickChamber.org/SheWeek2025 for event details and registration. Let’s keep moving—together.

First, head to Maryland Heights Trail (Sunrise Hike) and kick off your day early with this iconic 4.5-mile out-and-back trail that rewards you with sweeping views of the Harpers Ferry townscape and the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Locals love it best at sunrise. Visit Jefferson Rock, a short walk from the lower town historic district, for a slice of history. Thomas Jefferson once stood here and described the scene as “worth a voyage across the Atlantic.” Then head to Harpers Ferry Adventure Center to cool off with a whitewater rafting trip or zipline canopy tour. This locally loved outfitter offers everything from tubing to aerial obstacle courses—perfect for thrill-seekers or families looking to mix it up. End your day at Harpers Ferry Brewing with a cold pint and jaw-dropping views of the river valley. With a large outdoor space, live music and a laid-back crowd, this brewery is where locals go to relax after a day on the water or trail.

Kick off your trip at Rehoboth Beach & Boardwalk with a mile-long walk lined with quirky shops, snacks and ocean views. Dip your toes in the Atlantic and don’t leave without a bucket of Thrasher’s French Fries, best enjoyed with a splash of vinegar and ocean breeze. It’s a scene straight out of a vintage postcard. Just north of town, Cape Henlopen State Park offers a peaceful beach experience with scenic trails, historic sites and dolphin-spotting opportunities. If you prefer to pedal, the Junction & Breakwater Trail is a laid-back 6-mile bike ride through coastal forests and wetlands between Rehoboth and Lewes.

LEESBURG, VIRGINIA

Start your day at Lucketts Store exploring a part antique store, part design destination. This place is always full of surprises. Spend an hour or an afternoon browsing funky furniture, vintage décor and carefully curated treasures. Stop by Morven Park or Oatlands Historic House & Gardens, just minutes from the heart of Leesburg. These two historic estates offer a serene escape into Virginia’s rich past. Morven Park, once home to a Virginia governor, features grand architecture, scenic walking trails and equestrian roots. Just south, Oatlands enchants visitors with its impeccably preserved Greek Revival mansion, formal terraced gardens and quiet beauty—perfect for a thoughtful afternoon stroll. After, head to Vanish Brewery. Set on a scenic 62-acre farm, the laid-back atmosphere is perfect for sipping craft beer and indulging in amazing food. With over 20 rotating taps and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, it’s a go-to spot for live music, food trucks and unforgettable sunsets.

Start your day with a hike through towering hemlocks along the Youghiogheny River at Swallow Falls State Park. Muddy Creek Falls, a stunning 53-foot waterfall, is one of Maryland’s most photogenic natural wonders. Then head to Deep Creek Lake State Park. Whether you’re kayaking, paddleboarding or lounging lakeside, this is the heart of the Deep Creek experience. In summer, swim at the sandy beach. In fall, soak in vibrant foliage. Yearround, the views never disappoint. Grab lunch at Firewater Kitchen & Bar or MoonShadow and fuel up at one of the area’s local favorites. Firewater offers lakeside views while MoonShadow is known for creative eats and live music. Finish your day with a thrill at Wisp Resort. In winter, hit the slopes. In warmer months, try the mountain coaster, golf, scenic chairlift rides or ziplining. It’s a four-season playground packed with adventure.

ANNAPOLIS, MARYL AND

Start your day in the heart of downtown Annapolis, where brick-lined streets and colonial architecture set the scene. Pop into local shops along Main Street, then head to the Maryland State House—the oldest in continuous legislative use in the country. Walk the waterfront and watch sailboats glide through Spa Creek or book a short cruise for panoramic views of the Naval Academy and Chesapeake Bay. Stroll through the U.S. Naval Academy grounds (bring a photo ID for entry) or relax at Quiet Waters Park, a local gem offering trails, gardens and scenic overlooks. When you get hungry, try oysters and cocktails at Sailor Oyster Bar or for something more upscale, Chart House Prime won’t disappoint.

Pop into Lancaster Central Market, the oldest continuously operating public market in the U.S., packed with local produce, baked goods and globally inspired eats. Don’t leave without trying a whoopie pie or homemade soft pretzel. Gallery Row is just a few blocks of walkable downtown, bursting with local art, handmade goods and quirky boutiques. First Fridays are especially lively with open galleries and live music. The Demuth Museum & Lancaster Museum of Art offers a quiet but inspiring stop for those who appreciate fine art and the legacy of American modernist Charles Demuth. Stop in for Amish eats at Katie’s Kitchen, Amish-owned and operated, serving up cozy homestyle meals, sandwiches and baked goods made from traditional recipes. The day I finished With Love, Meghan on Netflix, I thought: “I want to host like that.” There’s something magical about the way Meghan Markle (now Meghan Sussex) brings warmth and ease to entertaining—it’s gracious, grounded and just the right amount of elevated. She makes guests feel seen, spoiled and totally at home. With the Fourth of July and golden-hour dinners just around the corner, now’s the perfect time to embrace that energy and host something special. But what really makes people feel comfortable in your space? Before you set the menu, ask: What small touch would make someone feel thought of? That’s where the magic begins. Here are a few easy, memorable ways to set the tone—before the first bite is even taken. Paired with the following fresh, summer-ready recipes, these tips will help you throw a gathering that’s just as chill as it is charming. Thoughtful Touches – On scorching days, set out chilled eucalyptus towels, a tray of sunscreen and bug spray, or handwritten drink tags so no one loses their cup. It’s like a resort, only better— because it’s yours.

DIY Rose Water – Cool down with a luxe (but easy!) spritz: Simmer 2 cups of chemical-free garden rose petals with 4 cups of water. Place an empty bowl inside the pot and cover it with an upside-down lid topped with 2 cups of ice. The condensation collects into fresh rose water—bottle and refrigerate up to a year. The Visual Element – Even store-bought lemonade looks luxe in a glass pitcher with floating lemon wheels. Add sprigs of rosemary, colorful linens or vintage glassware to set a sunny, styled tone. No Shame in the Thrift Game – LeAnn scored vintage blue goblets and glass bottles secondhand—a reminder that a stylish spread doesn’t need a big budget. It just takes heart (and maybe a good flea market find).

CREATIVE WAYS TO KEEP COOL

Race to Melt – Freeze small toys or coins inside large ice cubes and let kids (or fun adults) race to melt them. For a twist: last cube standing wins! Sponge Splash Battle – Cut sponges into strips, soak them and toss for a soft, reusable splash fight. Way less mess than water balloons and just as satisfying. Sprinkler Obstacle Course – Set up a backyard course with hula hoops, pool noodles and sprinklers for a chaotic, cooling good time. Hosting doesn’t have to be perfect to be unforgettable. With fresh flavors, thoughtful details and a little creativity, you can serve up a summer gathering that feels effortless and full of heart. So go on—light the citronella, fill the cooler, cue the playlist and bring your people together. GAME ON,

FREDERICK

38

AT H LE T E LIF E | FI TNES S

Truthfully, adulthood can be isolating. Between careers, responsibilities and the grind of daily life, genuine connection often slips through the cracks. The pickup games and spontaneous hangouts of our younger years fade—and with them, the easy joy of belonging. But the need for connection doesn’t disappear. In fact, nearly 1 in 2 U.S. adults report feeling lonely and prolonged isolation is now considered as harmful as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. Thankfully, Frederick Social Sports is changing that— one game at a time.

How Frederick Social Sports is Helping Adults Reconnect—One Game at a Time ARTICLE BY SIERRA MOORE PHOTOGRAPHY BY BELINDA PRATHER OF BJP PHOTOGRAPHY CONTINUED > JULY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / F R E D E R I C K

39

Founded in 2011 with a modest six-team dodgeball league, Frederick Social Sports has evolved into a thriving community that brings adults together through casual, inclusive recreation. Today, it offers a wide range of leagues year-round, including kickball, softball, volleyball, basketball, pickleball, darts, skeeball and even indoor golf. Whether you’re a seasoned player or someone who hasn’t touched the sport in a lifetime, there’s a place for you here. Laughter mid-game, high-fives between strangers and the easy camaraderie that comes from sharing the field is what makes it all feel a little less like exercise and a lot more like new friendships. It’s parents bringing their kids to cheer them on from the sidelines. It’s showing up for one game a week—or joining multiple teams if you’re looking for more. At its core, Frederick Social Sports is a reminder that it’s never too late to make new friends, try something new and play! “You’re already starting with something in common,” says founder Michelle Mott Salaum. “You’re on the same team, playing the same game—that breaks the ice instantly.” Beyond the leagues, Frederick Social Sports partners with local bars and restaurants to offer post-game hangouts, turning an average week night into something to look forward to. It also hosts four annual charity tournaments that give back to the Frederick community—extending its impact far beyond the field. Behind the scenes is a team of 15 passionate staff members who help keep the spirit of Frederick Social Sports alive. And with big dreams on the horizon—including a dedicated facility with indoor and outdoor spaces for yearround programming—the future looks just as energetic as the community it serves. For many, the league has been life-changing. “Some of the people I met through Frederick Social Sports stood beside me at my wedding,” Michelle shares. Because when you say yes to just one more game, you’re really saying yes to something more: friendship, movement, fun and a community that welcomes you exactly as you are.

GET IN THE GAME

Joining is easy. Head to FrederickSocialSports.com, pick your sport, and sign up solo, with a friend or as a full team. Free agents are matched with others and all skill levels are welcome. Come for the game. Stay for the people. You might just find exactly what you didn’t know you were missing.

A LEAGUE FOR EVERY INTEREST

No matter your speed or your skill—there’s something for everyone: • Kickball • Volleyball • Bowling • Cornhole • Dodgeball • Soccer • Basketball • Softball • Bocce • Pickleball • Darts • Skeeball • Indoor Golf • Football

WHY PLAYERS KEEP COMING BACK

“We signed up as a work team just to blow off some steam—and now it’s the best part of our week. It’s brought us closer as coworkers and friends.” “Our friend group started with one dodgeball season just for fun and now we sign up for every sport we can. It’s become our tradition.” “My partner and I joined to meet new people and ended up finding an entire community. We’ve even planned vacations with teammates!” “I had no idea what to expect, but the energy and connection on and off the field kept me coming back. Now, our whole friend group plays together and it’s something we all look forward to.” FrederickSocialSports.com CONTINUED >
