DRIVE DIFFERENT Here’s to those who think differently. The ones who think that a car dealership’s first priority should be the guest. Such a candid idea could only come from Ourisman. Because we’re forward thinking, just like the communities we serve. Individuals who won’t be constrained by how things “have always been done.” Who instead strive to do things “how they could be done” and “how they SHOULD be done.” It’s a philosophy we have infused into every fabric of our dealerships, from the bottom up, in every department, and in every Ourisman team member. Changing the way we all think about car buying is just the beginning. Visit Ourisman Motors of Frederick today. And Drive Different.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

New Year, New You!

January 2023 PUBLISHER

Amber Smith | Amber.Smith@CityLifestyle.com EDITOR

Kristen Wojdan | Kristen.Wojdan@CityLifestyle.com

For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement and hope. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. It’s possible those failed attempts were not tied to a lack of willpower but to systems and programs that rarely lead to lasting success. In our preparation for this Health & Wellness edition, we discovered sustainable changes often come to those who take the road less traveled. By nature, we are all drawn to what’s comfortable and convenient and are easily pulled back to old habits if they provide instant gratification. But what would our lives look like if we took the road less traveled? What if we did break free from those detrimental habits that keep us from living to our full potential and really experienced true health? Well, we talked to some local professionals who know a thing or two about this. You’ll see some common threads in the pages ahead about health, getting to the root source of problems, how making small changes lead to big results and more. From the power of personalized care and sustainable wellness plans to life changing nutrition, we hope you feel inspired and empowered to take a step or two in the right direction. It’s also our utmost pleasure to formally introduce you to Dr. Kevin Oakes, a world-renowned Board Certified Prosthodontist right here in Frederick. With combined specialities only a small number in his field hold, Dr. Oakes knows all about taking the road less traveled. Hard work pays off! His many years of experience and expertise coupled with his kindness and care make him standout tremendously. We cannot wait for you to get to know him better. Remember this: when it comes to anything in life—business, finances, food or personal health—it’s not what you do some days that move the needle, it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! Join the gym AND eat that slice of cake. Save the money AND go on that epic vacation. Work hard AND have fun!

DENTAL ARTS OF FREDERICK Meet Dr. Kevin Oakes: the Prosthodontist In Town Taking Dental Care in Frederick to a New Level

There are a lot of dental offices in Frederick—many with great backstories and wonderful people behind the scenes, but there are so many that it can be easy to go on unaware of the incredible experts we have access to in our backyard. Lucky us, we’ve gotten to know one of these experts who are newer to town–and we’re excited to introduce him to you. Meet Dr. Kevin Oakes, the internationally-renowned prosthodontist taking dental care and experience to a whole new level for the Frederick community. For Dr. Oakes, Frederick has not been home for a long time. In fact, “home” was quite a different concept for him until he moved to the area in 2008. Raised in a military family, home had many zip codes from various assignments in Germany and throughout the United States. Eventually, his father's military duties landed his family in Northern Virginia. Dr. Oakes pursued his undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech before continuing his academic endeavors at the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry. Upon graduation from Dental School he decided to follow his father's Army footsteps and became an Officer in

the Dental Corp. “...I have to say my dad was definitely an impact…he was a huge impact in my whole upbringing,” he recalled. After serving as a general dentist for several years he was accepted into the rigorous three-year Prosthodontics residency program at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in D.C. He graduated with honors and continued to serve as a Prosthodontist and Instructor for General Dentists prior to being awarded a fellowship in maxillofacial prosthetics at the Bethesda Naval Hospital. During this fellowship, his focus was on patients requiring head and neck reconstruction, working with cancer patients and trauma victims. Dr. Oakes finished out his service as the Officer in Charge of the Walter Reed Hospital Dental Clinic and decided it was finally time to retire—but that meant something different for him. While Dr. Oakes was ready to retire from dentistry in the military, he was far from ready to be finished with his dedication to patients requiring prosthodontic care. His 24 years of service as a soldier and dentist were more than just faithful duty—they were passionate investment. The more he served and

the more training he pursued, the more his love for serving others through the profession grew. It was about the soldiers he was serving. “...It’s easy to see the changes…you have a special type of dedicated patient, and you know you make a difference,” he recalled. Being able to see the impact he was having on those soldiers whom he was helping fed his joy. But it was also the artfulness of the trade itself that continued to entice him. “...the idea of building and recreating is what prosthodontics is…and when I wanted to be a dentist, it was all about doing something and creating something…prosthodontics is like the extension of that in dentistry..” he explained. And so, instead of retiring in the traditional way–into a career-free stage of life with no nine-tofive and less responsibility, Dr. Oakes had a different idea. His enjoyment of his profession had not diminished in the slightest, so why not open up his own private practice? In 2008, he did just that as he opened the doors to Dental Arts of Frederick on Thomas Johnson Drive–and he has been moving forward ever since. "I have the greatest job! I get to do what I love every day, and I have great people to do it with," he confessed. And as you can imagine, it is not your standard dental office. His love for the craft, passion for serving others and unique experience and training as a general dentist, prosthodontist and maxillofacial prosthodontist puts him on a whole different level. Not only is he uniquely qualified and committed to providing the highest level of care and service, but it is truly his joy to do so. Even still, he and the team at Dental Arts of Frederick continue searching for ways to improve and expand their offerings to better serve the community. The newest endeavor? Aesthetic procedures such as Botox, fillers and Inmode body contouring.

“This has been the first place to really have as a home…I feel I’m part of an entity…I like telling people I am from Frederick...This is a success for me.”

“...As a prosthodontist, my specialty has been rebuilding faces,...so that was just an easy evolution,” he explained. It’s like we said: there are so many dental offices in Frederick that it’s easy to put them all in the same category—but Dental Arts of Frederick is truly a hidden gem. With his passion for people and profession, his extensive experience and his unique offerings, Dr. Kevin Oakes has whipped up something special. In the meantime, he is continuing to make himself at home in Frederick and is unabashedly proud to be here. “This has been the first place to really have as a home…I feel I’m part of an entity…I like telling people I am from Frederick,” he shared. “...You know, you make choices in life and hope they are successful—this is a success for me." Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.

You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!

T I P S T O G E T S TA R T E D O N YO U R P L A N T- B A S E D J O U R N E Y:

1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. Plant based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies.

PLANT BASED EATING IS MORE OF A LIFESTYLE THAN A DIET. YOU ARE SIMPLY EATING MORE FOODS THAT ARE CLOSER TO THEIR HARVESTED STATE WITH MINIMAL PROCESSING. 32

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat-free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life. Claudia Martin-Ayoade is a registered dietitian, writer and public speaker who is passionate about educating people about nutrition and addressing food insecurity.

T H E VA L U E O F N U T R I T I O N RESPONSE TESTING® ARTICLE BY DR. THOMAS K. LO PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA MITCHELL

Dr. Lo Shares About the Impact of Nutrition on his Health Journey It all began on December 16, 2006. It was the holiday season and our office was very hectic. I had no time for lunch and just grabbed a bite to eat from whatever patients brought in; mainly, cookies and chocolates. On that Tuesday afternoon, I broke out into a cold sweat, felt shaky and experienced vertigo right as I was treating a patient. I ran to the bathroom to vomit and returned to finish treating the patient. This went on for about an hour and I finally could not do that anymore. We had to cancel all of

36

EAT R IGH T | FOOD + BEVE RAGE

the remaining patients. My blood pressure was 190/165, my pulse was 90 and temperature normal. My chiropractic assistant took me to my family doctor who tried to stop my vertigo and vomiting with pills and shots, but with no success. The medical doctor finally gave me a shot to knock me out and I was taken home. About a week before this event, I had bragged about never missing a day of work due to illness or injury. Now I had to miss two days in a row. For the next two months, I went

through a healing journey. First, I saw a Neurologist who could not find anything wrong with me. My blood pressure was back to normal with no medication and my brain MRI was also normal. Next, I visited the Ear/Nose/Throat specialist who discovered I had slight hearing loss in my left ear. All the blood work came back normal and he did not know what caused the vertigo. The next stop was the Urologist. The PSA was slightly high, but the digital exam and biopsy were normal. A scheduled visit to the GI doctor and a colonoscopy revealed twelve polyps, but none of them were cancerous. In the meantime, between medical doctor visits I was seeing three different chiropractic colleagues. They gave me a variety of treatments, including activator adjustment, manual manipulation, cold laser, nutrition and diet modification. While all medical testing could not find the cause of my vertigo, Nutritional Response Testing® revealed I had a virus in my ear, malfunctioning kidneys, parasites, adrenal fatigue and multiple food allergies. All of these came from eating too much sugar and my stressed-out body just could not handle it; resulting in immune system breakdown. I continued with some other natural remedies but they did not help my particular situation. While the cold laser helped to eliminate the symptom of vertigo, the diet change and nutrition support were the effective approach for handling the root cause of the problem. What is Nutritional Response Testing®? It is a noninvasive system of analyzing the body in order to determine the underlaying causes of ill health. When these are corrected through safe, natural, nutritional means, the body can repair itself in order to attain and maintain more optimum health. Through our analysis, we are testing the body’s neurological reflexes on the surface of the body. These reflexes are the body’s way to show what and how the nervous system is doing. It is the nervous system’s responsibility to regulate the body’s functions for each and every organ. In my practice, adrenal fatigue and hypothyroidism are the most common conditions we handle, followed by digestive issues, allergies and food sensitivity. We are also helping post-covid long haulers with autonomous nervous system dysfunction and patients with chronic ailments with their recovery. We are living in a polluted environment with chemicals and heavy metal toxicity, breathing in bad air, eating highly processed food, taking drugs with bad side effects and stress from listening to bad news and engaging in negative social media. Besides sleeping well, adequate exercise and mindfulness, nutrition is one of the four approaches to better health. DoctorLo.com

You may want to explore Nutritional Response Testing® if:

Summit Nurse Consulting: Healthcare With Its Heart Set Free Sophia Wilmot is the Nurse Practitioner Using Her Skills to Tend to Her Passion for People

ARTICLE BY ARLISS VELDHUIZEN PHOTOGRAPHY BY REBECCA MITCHELL PHOTOGRAPHY

Since the dawn of COVID-19, the world of healthcare has weathered some heavy blows and been faced with new challenges. Hospitals are overwhelmed, providers are under-resourced, and both families and individuals have struggled to get the care or answers they need. While the virus itself is no longer a stranger to us, it seems to have ushered in a whole new wave of sickness that’s left people flocking to the hospital and other types of health practices. As it often goes with pain and fear, many of us are tempted to look for someone to blame. But Nurse Practitioner Sophia Wilmot had another idea entirely–and the Frederick community is benefiting from it greatly. Meet Nurse Practitioner Sophia Wilmot, the head, heart, and hands behind Summit Nurse Consulting–a one-of-a-kind medical

practice with its heart set free. Summit Nurse Consulting is unique in every way, beginning with the fact that it’s an independent medical clinic–meaning that it’s completely independently run, being solely owned and operated by Practitioner Wilmot herself. Though she has a team of faithful, supportive friends and family members who volunteer to help her with various aspects of the business, Summit Nurse Consulting is a one-woman show. This is possible because unlike many other states in the U.S, Maryland allows nurse practitioners full-practice authority. As a result, she’s able to perform a variety of tasks without a doctor’s signature, from writing referrals, to ordering lab tests, to writing prescriptions–and with over 15 years of experience in a wide array of medical settings, she is more than qualified to do these things.

“I just care about people and the community, and I really want people to be getting the answers they need…it’s just not about medicine–it’s about people.”

As a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, Sophia has experience in a variety of medical settings, from the operating room, to the pediatric emergency department, to primary care, to outpatient care, and even to health and wellness clinic settings. Suffice it to say, she’s seen it all and she knows her stuff. Another aspect that classifies her practice as independent is the fact that it does not accept insurance, and though at first glance it may seem restrictive, it actually serves to enable the whole-hearted, personalized care that Sophia so eagerly and faithfully provides. Being free from the reins of the many rules enforced by insurance companies, Nurse Practitioner Sophia comes to her patients in the comfort of their own homes, allowing her to take the time each patient needs and offer the treatment she believes is best. There are no billing, time, or building restrictions to work around and she’s thus free to offer a higher level of individual care– no matter the circumstance. These things alone are enough to set Summit Nurse Consulting apart from the rest, but there’s one thing that really makes it unique–and that’s Sophia’s passion for people. By February of 2020, she was happily married to an incredible man and had just welcomed her third child. Little did she know that the COVID-19 pandemic was just around the corner–and with it, the birth of a brand new dream.

“During the pandemic, family and friends were asking me to help them because they weren't getting the answers they needed from primary care or urgent care,” she recalled. “I also recognized a lot of people were scared about the pandemic–a lot of people were nervous, hurting, [suffering] losses, in confusion…” And as she continued to see the needs of others rising, her desire to meet those needs rose to meet them. Why? It’s simple: she just loves people. “I just care about people and the community, and I really want people to be getting the answers they need…it’s just not about medicine–it’s about people.” This is the real secret sauce to what makes Summit Nurse Consulting different from the rest. It’s not just the natural progression in her career. It’s not simply an extension of her professional interest. It is the manifestation of her deep affection for people and caring for them–mind, body and soul–that drove her to blaze this trail and that fuels all that she does. So if you’re not sure whether to go to the ER or not, need a well-child visit conducted for a toddler, or have a sick loved one on your hands, Nurse Practitioner Sophia Wilmot is not only able to help, but is also truly joyful to help. In the meantime, you might spot her and her family of five at the Urbana Library, visiting the local shops of downtown Frederick or biking in pursuit of donuts around town. SummitNurse.com

Super Mom A Mom Who Emulates Greatness ARTICLE BY LOREAN JUSTMAN The term “supermom” has been frowned upon lately because it has been transformed from a woman who models wisdom, dignity and success to seen as unobtainable by those who may feel unsure of their own inner strengths. The truth is, we all can be an example of hard work and devotion to a purpose or calling on the inside, no matter what the downward spiral of comparison proclaims. Each of us has a unique variety of gifts and talents, some already perfected, and others waiting to be awakened and explored. Fear, or a toxic mindset, may get in the way of moving forward in these skills, hindering our daily achievements; but the victory comes when we turn the negative self-talk around and start over. Each day is a gift, and a new opportunity to start fresh in all areas of life. As we look toward the new year, many of us set goals or make new year’s resolutions with hope for a change, but without a plan to alter our character habits in how we think, feel and behave. A few weeks pass without results, so we give up and fall back into the comfort of mediocracy without realizing how close we were to developing the habits that need to be instilled in us before we conquer our goals. What we do consistently every day for the long run is what will help us achieve our ultimate desires and align us with the purpose of our life. For example, if we want to be a mom who emulates greatness to our kids, we show up every day with a spirit of love, peace and joy, while we stand alongside our husbands in support and encouragement as a loyal wife. We provide a home filled with warmth and comfort, while we approach our businesses or career with confidence and resilience. In our relationships, we empathetically listen with honesty and trustworthiness. When we commit to something, we follow through on our word with determination, while being understanding to those around us. We remain steadfast and focused day after day without fail.

H A P P Y H E A LT H Y Create an Annual Happiness & Health Plan with Holistic Health Associates

An “Annual Wellness Plan” can sound restrictive and daunting. An “Annual Happiness Plan,” on the other hand? That could be appealing. How do you make that plan? Pay attention to your body. When your head aches or your back hurts or your feet are killing you, you’re not happy. A healthy body makes a happier you. For a happier and healthier you, Frederick's Holistic Health Associates (HHA) encourages five focal areas: nutrition, movement, coordinated manual therapies and medical care, mindfulness and relationships, and some form of detox. HHAMD.com

Detox can be a scary idea. We envision a colonoscopy prep and think “No, not that!” Ryan Diener, CEO of HHA, explains “detox” is a way of giving the organs in our bodies a rest from their labors. For example, our livers stay busy cleaning our blood and optimizing nutrients in the blood to better serve us. Plastics, air and water pollutants and even pesticides in soil that infuse into our foods, are all ultimately sent to the liver for cleansing. Within only a few generations, our bodies have had to deal with over fifty additional toxic substances. Over time, toxins compound the work of our organs. “It’s like climbing a mountain carrying a suitcase and backpack,” Diener said. “When you take a week to mindfully reduce the processed, glutenous and sugar-laden foods, you’ve given your liver and other organs a breather.” It’s nothing harsh for your system. It just gives them time to empty the junk out of the suitcase, reorganize that backpack and rest a bit. While that’s a lighthearted way to describe the process, perhaps, after detoxing, it’ll be like climbing that mountain with a fanny pack and a much happier body. “A detox rest and reset will give you more energy, lower inflammatory markers and significantly improved organ functionality,” Diener says. “Do it at least once a year. It is helpful both physically and mentally.”

NEW YEAR! Nutrition guidelines abound. Choose one that keeps your diet appropriately balanced with your body’s needs and your lifestyle. Create a personal wellness plan based on levels of Good, Better and Best. For example: Good may be extra pieces of fruit, Better is natural sweeteners like local honey or pure maple syrup and Best is no sweeteners at all. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment and dejection by striving for perfection. Strive to follow a wellness plan 80% of the time and allow yourself to be flexible 20% of the time. The thought of supplements can be unsettling. Which ones? When? How much is enough or too much? Our soil now has decreased values of nutrients. Therefore, the food we eat has less nutritional value and our body has insufficient nutrients to function to the best of its ability. Food supplements (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, etc.) provide additional essential nutrients the average person needs. In keeping with the Good, Better, Best concept, the better and best supplements are those made with condensed, nutrient rich, naturally occurring resources.

nutrition & supplements

movement Movement adds significant value to long-term wellness. It doesn’t need to be high-intensity or 2-hour long runs. It could be simple, slow movement. “Tai Chi connects the body, mind and spirit in relaxing, low impact exercises for all levels of health and mobility,” says Frank Neely, with HHA. “Tai Chi enhances overall performance and life balance.” Your movement plan could start small with a focus on five minutes of movement this month. Add a bit daily and you may be moving twenty minutes in April and actively moving for forty-five by December.

coordinated manual therapies & medical care Manual therapies are additional practices that can help heal, restore and promote wellness. They enhance how your body operates. HHA engages a variety of therapies in the wellness plans they advocate. Diener specializes in acupuncture, a key component of traditional Chinese medicine. According to the Mayo Clinic, acupuncture is increasingly being used to treat pain and relieve discomfort of a variety of diseases and conditions from chemotherapy-induced nausea to tennis elbow. Massage therapy is no longer a mere luxury. It helps treat depression, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, headache, insomnia, postoperative care and soft tissue injuries. Kasey Cecchini, at HHA, agrees, “it can improve circulation, energy and alertness, lower heart rate and blood pressure and improve immune functions.” Aryn Bostian adds, “Reiki is an excellent modality to help assist with stress reduction and relaxation. From pregnancy to trauma to sleep difficulties or general wellness, reiki offers patients a safe space to focus on their healing journey.” “Reflexology is more than a foot massage,” says Norma Jean Hohman. “It can help with deep relaxation, pain management, anxiety, headache relief, plantar fasciitis, and provide an overall balance in energy.“ Michelle Clowe suggests an ancient form of Chinese energetic bodywork. Qigong Meridian Therapy (QMT) offers the benefits of acupuncture without the needles and massage without getting undressed. QMT fosters deep relaxation and healing, helps you release physical and emotional stress and pain and encourages wellness on every level.

mindfulness & relationships The brain is obviously a major component of our happiness. It also plays a major role in our overall health. In addition to food stressors, our bodies are also stressed by thoughts. Mindfulness is essential for good health. Your mindset is a choice The frequency of your positive thoughts will significantly impact your Annual Happiness and Health Plan. Not every day is great. That 80/20 approach can work for your attitude as it does for nutrition. Try a mental detox day, too. Choose your best relationships and strengthen them. “Phenomenal brain chemicals are released when we are engaged in good personal relationships,” says Diener. “Building positive moments and days will have a massive impact on your annual health results.”

LEGGINGS 3 WA Y S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

BRUNCH A FTER BA R R E Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. Don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist and added fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear.

Snag some of the key details of the outfits here!
