Although the holidays bring many special opportunities and joyous moments, it can be a hard season for some. Do you know anyone who is alone, recently lost a loved one or is struggling financially? The desire for togetherness and belonging is in each one of us. For me, celebrating the true meaning of Christmas brings a level of hope, joy and peace that is unparalleled. If I’m not careful, the hurry of this season can steal so much of the meaning and purpose right out from under me, leaving me exhausted and empty, not revived. I feel like the uncontainable Buddy the Elf watching our town transform into a winter wonderland. Pour me a bowl of maple syrup noodles, please! It was a lovely evening that included melodies from the 50’s to the 80’s by the entertaining, Silvertones Swing Band, a delicious buffet created by Ceresville Mansion and delectable delights by Maryland Bakes. Over $130,000 was raised at the 23rd Annual Mission of Mercy Gala. The Frederick Flying Cows is a new professional basketball team based in Frederick, Maryland. The organization will be joining The Basketball League (TBL), a nationwide league with over 50 teams. The Flying Cows’ regular season runs 24 games from March to May, with 12 home games played at Hood College. Look for their 12 Days of Giving which will start in December. Caboose Farm Offers Unique Opportunity for To g e t h e r n e s s VENUE ALLOWS GUESTS TO CREATE MULTIPLE-DAY EVENTS WITH THE CONVENIENCE OF SPACE AND BEAUTY OF NATURE

Nothing can replace time spent together, but it’s often hard to come by. For many people, time without distractions, obligations and outside noises is even harder to come by. Guests at Caboose Farm are lucky to experience the gift of uninterrupted time surrounded by nature’s beauty and awe-inspiring backdrop for events such as weddings, family reunions, corporate events, private parties and even holiday functions. Nestled in the mountains near Sabillasville, Maryland, the venue sits just outside Catoctin Mountain Park, a stone’s throw from Camp David and less than a five minute drive from Cunningham Falls State Park. “Guests are able to experience the beauty of the mountains and being outside,” said Colby Stouffer, who has been property manager of the site since 2013, and who had his own

wedding there in 2016. “I have seen it from both sides—helping to run events here and also getting married here. It truly is a beautiful and remarkable place.” Take a quick scroll through pictures of weddings held at Caboose Farm and it isn’t hard to see why so many couples choose this setting for their special day. With 215 acres, the property includes hiking trails, a pond, woods, a stream and vast fields. Couples can choose to hold their ceremony wherever they please, with the assurance that every spot is picture perfect. “It’s a jewel in the valley,” said Peter Fedak, whose family has owned and grown the property since 1971. “But I don’t want it to stay hidden—I want people to come and enjoy all it offers. The best thing I can do is share this experience with others.” Various features of the estate allow guests to “chill and relax” while also exploring the great outdoors and valuing each other’s company. “That is what this property has always been—even when I was a kid—a place to walk around with family, getaway to
the mountains and take time to reconnect,” Peter said, recalling nostalgic memories throughout the years with his own family and expressing his desire that others are able to do the same. The estate is fondly named after a caboose which was purchased by Peter’s father in 1974, and is now centrally located on the property as a welcoming symbol for all visitors. Across the road from the caboose is the event barn which includes three levels, each serving a variety of functions. The 2,600-squarefoot lower level is perfect for dinner and dancing. The barn’s main level features a family-heirloom antique bar and cash register, a seating area, movie theater and three outdoor decks. The upper level houses a game room, where guests can play foosball or lounge with a good book. In addition to the picturesque scenery and the event barn, Caboose Farm also features seven fully-furnished houses that are available for couples and guests to rent, giving the unique opportunity to make special events into multiple-day affairs. Mostly named after various presidents, each house holds between 10-16 people, with a total of 33 bedrooms across all seven rentals, allowing for about 100 people to stay on site. The oldest house was built in the late 1700s, two were built in the mid to late 1800s, and the remaining four were built in the 1950s and 1960s. The interior of each house has been newly renovated and features all of the amenities of modern living, including a full kitchen, sitting areas and

distinctive decor created and procured by Peter’s wife, Daniele, and her parents who are local visual artists. Nearby wineries, golf courses, national and state parks and other local attractions allow for a sort of “private vacation” for guests, while still being close to major cities and airports. “We are away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Instead, our guests can come here and really enjoy their time together,” Colby said, noting that his goal is to help guests feel at home and enable them to create an experience they will remember fondly. While the venue doesn’t have in-house catering at the moment, Colby works with

guests to build their perfect team of services and also gives recommendations when needed. “Colby and the staff are so easy to work with,” said Peter. “They really make it their mission to accommodate and make the entire experience stress free and enjoyable.” The serenity of the Caboose Farm property is not only a great spot for weddings; other events such as corporate team building, yoga retreats, writer workshops, family reunions, birthday parties, religious retreats and even Thanksgiving and New Year celebrations are among the gatherings that have been held there.

David Weigelt, and his wife, Stephanie, met while attending Linganore HS and both studied at McDaniel College. Years later, they reconnected, married, raised their children, retired and, most recently, launched C12 Maryland. David describes himself as a “very imperfect business leader” whose life and leadership was dramatically changed for the better by C12, a peer advisory group for Christian business leaders for which David was a member for seven years. After selling the business he co-founded (Immersive Active), David felt called to become a C12 leader in Maryland. He explained, “The mission and calling God has given me is to be a catalyst for businesses as a ministry in our community.” After the first few years on a mission to equip faith-driven business leaders to build great businesses for a greater purpose, David felt compelled to turn C12’s membership banquet into a public event to celebrate what God is doing through all Christian business leaders in Maryland. This led to the inaugural BaaM (Business as a Ministry) Awards at Oikonomia 2023. “Oikonomia (pronounced ‘oy-koh-noh-mee-ah’) is a Greek word closely translated to mean ‘administration’ or ‘stewardship,’ and describes how we manage all God entrusts to us,” explained David. “Oikonomia 2023, is a celebration of what God is doing in and through Kingdom-driven business leaders in Maryland.” This year’s event featured two keynote speakers (both Maryland-based CEOs): Scott Ryser, CEO of Frederick-based Yakabod and author of At Work As In Heaven, along with Frank Kelly III, CEO of Kelly Benefits and author of Influence and the Creator’s Game. Each shared inspiring messages focusing on their faith in God and how that faith is a core foundation in their lives, including in their businesses. Ted Robinson has lived in amazing places all over the world, but according to him, he’s found a true welcome and the deepest sense of home here in Frederick. Having spent a long career in the military, he bounced from Italy, Germany, France, Honduras, Saudi Arabia and other international locations—as well as places like Texas and New Jersey in the States—before finding permanent settlement in Maryland as a biodefense researcher at Fort Detrick. Before he and his wife Mary officially began calling Frederick home, they had driven through a few times and enjoyed visiting the community, but especially began to appreciate the welcoming local atmosphere after purchasing their first Frederick house in 2007. Children Nicholas and Ashley followed, and the Robinsons have been here ever since (Ted retired from active military service in 2008). Frederick has also provided an ideal location for Ted’s creativity to blossom. “It has so many diverse landscapes, from downtown, to country barns—all of these places that are uniquely iconic,” he says. Having been interested in photography since high school, where he was part of his school’s photography club, he really began to get serious about his main creative interest in 2010, after visiting a wildlife preserve in Oklahoma while traveling for work.
The preserve took him back to his childhood in Alabama when he used to sit in front of the television and watch Western shows after church. He has always been inspired by the vast unspoiled landscapes of the American West, the beautiful, vibrant colors of the desert—places where the buffalo literally roam. He captured so many amazing photographs at the wildlife preserve that he was inspired to invest in some quality camera equipment and put time and attention into photography as a hobby. Luckily, Frederick provided so much rich subject matter right in Ted’s backyard. The historical character of Frederick, the preservation of its interesting buildings and even more modern developments such as Carroll Creek Linear Park “force us to pause and appreciate the timeless beauty of our surroundings,” he says. It’s these moments of timeless beauty that he tries to freeze perfectly in his photos. Of course, there is no shortage of Frederick locals—and even those farther afield—who have an appetite for displaying these “iconic” moments and places as art. The transition for Ted to begin offering his photographs as prints for sale has been natural. He’s become well-known in the community as a photographer, with a special knack for turning an eye of wonder

toward those local pops of beauty we sometimes miss—and he has turned his gift and passion into a thriving business. He has recently redesigned and revamped his website and spreads the word about his art at regional vendor shows. He photographs other locations as he travels, but Frederick forms the heart and soul of his work, especially his popular, unique compilation of Frederick County doors. In keeping with his deeply-rooted appreciation for the community, Ted has also gotten involved in shaping local arts. Frederick Arts Council Executive Director Louise Kennelly approached him at a vendor show and invited him to interview as a member of the Frederick Arts Council board. He quickly joined the organization and became active in extending the benefit of arts programming and support to Frederick residents and visitors. “It’s important to me to make sure that the arts in Frederick are representing everyone in the community,” he says, “and that folks throughout the county are accessing those benefits, as well.”
Through his work with the Arts Council, he’s been able to participate in some exciting local creative efforts. One particularly close to his heart, he says, has been the redesign of the 7th Street Fountain Park, as spearheaded by the Downtown Frederick Partnership. As a member of the Arts Council board, he represented FAC in reviewing artist applications for a prominent public artwork that will commemorate the history of the 7th Street neighborhoods in the redesigned park. The artist will work with the AARCH Society, as well as other local organizations, to weave Frederick’s African-American history into a public sculpture of illumination and honor. He also looks forward to upcoming travels that will provide incredible vistas for some gorgeous photos. He has trips planned to Ireland and Greece—camera in tow, for sure, although to be fair, he never leaves home without it! And the holiday season, as always, will provide fresh opportunities for classic Frederick stills. Frederick in the snow is always the ultimate winter wonderland. ArtFrederick.com

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds.
