KEEPING IT ALL IN PERSPECTIVE

YOUR DREAM WEDDING AND RECEPTION ARE PLANNED DOWN TO THE MINUTE IN DETAIL. It is going to be perfect. You have counted and recounted the RSVPs and scoured all your sources for THE linens to bring the wow to the place settings. And you could just pinch yourself over the to die for custom-color on the cake. After all, this isn’t just any event—this is THE big day. The day you’ve dreamt of since, well, forever. What happens when things don’t exactly go as planned or you can’t afford the dress you’ve had your eye on? After all, it’s impossible to anticipate something like the cake not arriving on time, or being unable to book THE venue, or, on the wedding day, one of the groomsmen is stuck on a boat that’s run out of gas in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay (true story). With a bit of forethought and preparation, you can tame your inner Bridezilla.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS

Holy Yoga DE-STRESS AND DEEP BREATHS “YOGA IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS AMAZING STRENGTHENING AND TONING BENEFITS, BUT IT IS EQUALLY BENEFICIAL FOR REDUCING STRESS. Studies speak to how practicing this ancient series of stretches and poses along with mindful breathing helps to reduce anxiety and lower stress almost instantly,” says Jen Moye, Marketing Director for Holy Yoga. “Holy Yoga is for everyone and every body. No matter where you come from—if you’ve been practicing for years, never tried yoga before, aren’t physically fit, worry that you aren’t bendy enough or are overweight—you just have to show up on your mat and simply be there and be present in the moment. We are different from most traditional yoga programs. We don’t want you to feel like you have to have it all together to come. We believe yoga is a beautiful conduit to let God do His work if you allow Him to,” says Jen. “The goal in our community is that everyone would find a safe place to belong.” Much like traditional Eastern yoga, Holy Yoga’s practice incorporates the essential elements of yoga: breathing, meditation and physical poses with, for many in the Holy Yoga community, Christ as the focus of worship. Yoga is the perfect practice for anyone who desires to slow down and be fully present and, especially so, for a bride on her special day or a stressed-out mother of the bride. We all know how stressful the wedding day can be. A pre-wedding mini-yoga session with the bride and her bridesmaids could be the answer to minimizing that anxiety and getting off on the right foot. Utilizing yoga techniques that calm and bring perspective are great tools to have in your toolbox. There are things that happen, mentally, physically and emotionally, when you slow down breathing by taking deep, intentional breaths. The result is reduced stress and a clearer, more focused mind. Who couldn’t use that every day but, especially on your wedding day? HolyYoga.net Whether you join for your personal practice, instructor training, spiritual formation, or anything in between, Holy Yoga creates space for a life-changing transformation through their worldclass programs where you can experience a new way to worship. Pose 1: Standing Forward Fold Standing, take a deep breath in and as you breathe out, slowly lower the top half of your body toward the ground, moving your torso toward your thighs. Notice how you surrender your anxiety, worries and cares.

Pose 2: Easy Seated Pose Seated, with legs crossed or not. Sit up tall and in a posture in which you are still and comfortable. Notice your breath coming in and out of your nostrils. Simply observe your breath for a moment.

Pose 3: Extended Child’s Pose Sitting on your calves (buttocks on feet), take a deep breath in, raising your hands overhead. Fold forward into extended child’s pose. Rest here for as long as you need to, being mindful of your breathing.

Pose 4: Reclining Bound Angle Lie on your back and bring the soles of your feet together. Place cushions underneath your knees or hips for additional support if desired. Gently place one hand on your stomach area and one hand on your heart, as you begin to focus on your breath. Not judging it or trying to change it, simply notice the exchange of breath on your inhale and exhale. You can make it more of a heart opener by placing a block or rolled-up blanket under your back.

CHEERS TO M E M O R A B LE MOMENTS DREAM GOWN? Check. Persnickety florist? Check. Top-notch wedding planner? Check. Unexpected glitches? Check-Check-Check. I have attended and participated in many different weddings across the country. Every blessed event had one thing in common: some sort of unforeseen mishap. Amazingly, not one involved a wacky uncle + booze. To all future brides and grooms, “zillas” included, the only thing I can advise is to roll with the fiasco. With every marriage, your sense of humor is necessary icing on the multi-tiered cake. You may as well start laughing on day one. 4. A BRIDE IS ON A BUDGET BUT WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY IS IMPORTANT TO THEM. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO NAVIGATE THIS? Prioritize your budget with photography. A lot of people are working with modest budgets, just don’t skimp on what matters most to you. There are other areas you can cut back on to make it work, for example, wedding favors. In my opinion, that is the first thing that can go. Guests don’t need a personalized koozie, perfectly packaged s’mores or sunglasses paying tribute to your wedding colors. That’s not to say those things aren’t awesome if you have room in your budget but guests will not sit there wondering where their favor is; they’ll be eating, drinking, dancing and having a good time. Make sure you share your photos with family, friends and guests, making the investment even more worth it. 5. YOUR PHOTOS LOOK LIKE THEY ARE OUT OF A FAIRY-TALE. THE LIGHTING, THE GLOW, THE WHOLE BRIDAL ENSEMBLE JUST FEELS MAGICAL. CAN YOU SHARE A LITTLE PROFESSIONAL INSIGHT ON HOW YOU BRING THIS MAGIC TO LIFE? I think a lot goes into this! If you, the bride, feel comfortable and confident it will make a world of difference. Choose a dress that you love, have your hair and make up done professionally, even for a more natural look, and oops, I’m saying it again—trust your photographer! Clients may initially pick locations for photos without knowing how lighting impacts the overall look. I will choose a location with good, glowy light over a specific backdrop, every single time. Sometimes it’s best to stay in a spot versus moving all around the venue, if the lighting is that good. Amanda loves getting to see her couples through many milestones in their lives and the fact that she gets invited back year after year to see where life has taken them, makes her so happy! She cares about her clients and is invested in their lives, beyond just photo shoot days. If you feel she may be a good fit, reach out and start the conversation! AmandaSummersPhoto.com
