The 159th Great Frederick Fair is Worth the Wait After a quiet 2020, the legendary Great Frederick Fair came back in full swing. Music, laughter and chatter filled the air all week long. Families enjoyed countless bags of cotton candy and plates of funnel cakes. People of all ages won awards for their artwork, baked goods, craftwork and animals. As in years past, the fantastic fair gave Frederick a week of nostalgic fun. TheGreatFrederickFair.com

Intrigued by both the anonymity and the potential for a great story, I set out to find out more about him. When I inquired after the officer, the Public Information Officer only shared my questions. He and the Chief of Police jumped in to help with my query. After phone calls and email chains, the officer’s identity was discov-

of the day, “husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, and soldiers—as well as police officers. Like the rest of us, they face life’s challenges—joys, sorrows, triumphs, failures, life and death. They were called to serve the public, and they have responded to that call admirably.” As a chaplain for the police department, Chaplain Myers is available for spiritual and emotional support in any way an officer may need. He explains, “The amount of stress that officers are expected to manage can take a toll on the officer, but also on the family. So, any way that I can help them manage and process that stress means that they can take a bit less of it home with them.” Policing is a profession that requires a solid skill set and an exemplary mental capacity, to be sure. It is a profession nothing short of admirable. And it is certainly not for the faint of heart. I ventured to ask OFC Salahov what he likes most about his work. After all, it was his own choice and passion to begin with! “There hasn’t been a day where I don’t enjoy coming to work...It is a fun job. You get to help people!” OFC Salahov shares warmly. The officers in our communities truly care. They love our communities and want to keep us safe. They want to build relationships. These men and women serve as role models and peacekeepers. It isn’t explicitly stated in the job description, but it’s part of the job all the same. If you happen to see a police officer this holiday season—and chances are, you will—be sure to thank them for their honorable service. CityofFrederickMD.gov

Decorate a wall or corner of a room with a balloon display. One of the best parts about a custom balloon arrangement is that you can choose any color(s) to match your palette. Going for a winter wonderland theme? Perhaps white and silver will set the mood. All out Christmas? Red and green, of course! Balloon arrangements (such as an arch) can double as a photo backdrop, so you’ll get more out of it. In the words of Caity Byrne, award-winning balloon artist and owner of Frederick Balloon Co., “Balloons can really bring an event to life...If you want to memorialize the perfect moment in time encapsulating the party atmosphere for Instagram and beyond, the professional balloon installation is the perfect fit.” FrederickBalloons.com
Set the scene with music—but, not just any music. The Frederick Strings, which consists of string and flute-string quartets and trios, is an elegant and unique way to entertain your guests. Imagine sipping cocktails and laughing with friends as the melodious sounds of cello, violin and flute dance through the air. The Frederick Strings will immediately give your party an elegant feel, one that will be remembered for years to come. FredStrings.com 24

GIVING BACK
Gratefully
ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES
GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!
ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. Anna Sarol
“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent.
26
Frederick Lifestyle | December 2021
When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.”

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GIVE AWAY $3OO,OOO This year the company will have nominations for the giveaway open from December 1-15, 2021. To submit a nomination, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and fill out the form found in the bio link. The amount given to each recipient will be based on need. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them with their company’s continued success, so they in turn wish to be a blessing and encouragement to others as they increase the amount of this year’s giveaway to those in need to $300,000 for the year.
In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy 28
