LIFESTYLE LETTER

Bring It, 2026! January always brings a sense of possibility with it. As we step into 2026, many of us feel that familiar spark of "newness" that makes us want to reset and refresh. After a season of celebration and maybe a little overindulgence, there’s something calming about returning to ourselves with intention. Our Health & Wellness issue is designed to support you in doing exactly that. Inside, you’ll find stories that inspire self-care and sometimes a different approach to well-being. Whether you’re curious about the benefits of lymphatic treatments, looking for simple “mood food” recipes to boost your energy this winter, or building community through compassion like Kara Lewis, these stories will help you start the year feeling centered. We also shine a spotlight on former Franklin resident and actor Hunter McVey, who stars in 9-1-1: Nashville. As you move through the first days of 2026, I hope this issue brings you comfort, motivation, and maybe even a new ritual or two. Cheers to a year of growth and gratitude! Warmly,

PAINTING THE SOUND: HOW ROY LAWS TURNS MUSIC INTO ART ARTICLE BY ATHENA WEST | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

38

A RT IST ’S PA LE T T E | ARTS + CU LT U RE

In a city where creativity and community intertwine, Franklin artist Roy Laws has become known for painting the soundtrack of local life. His bold, expressive works pulse with the rhythm of live music and the soul of the South, making him a standout figure in the region’s thriving art and music scene. Whether performing live alongside musicians or capturing the emotion of a song in color and texture, Laws turns every canvas into a visual celebration of sound.

Roy Laws "Painter of Music"

“I’ve always been interested in art, even from a very young age,” Laws said. “My first step into this current journey was years ago when I wanted my kids' rooms to become little art galleries. I would find a style of painting that I wanted to learn and then create art for their rooms based on it. An impressionistic astronaut or an expressionistic robot, for example. I eventually took aspects from all these varied styles to create my own look and technique.” That “look and technique” has since become a hallmark of the Williamson County art scene...bold, vibrant, and alive with motion, Laws’ work is instantly recognizable for its bursts of color and dynamic energy, often reflecting his deep connection to music. “I’ve called myself a garage band artist before, and I feel it’s pretty fitting,” he said. “My style is fast, energetic, and enthusiastic. I get the feeling and the vibe of the subject matter rather than its fine details. If a home or office needs a visual focal point or a big splash of color, my art works out quite well. If anyone has ever been to Williamson Inc., they will have seen plenty of my artwork there.” While his style might be described as expressive, his subject matter often strikes a clear chord. Music is at the heart of almost everything he paints.

“Music is my main subject matter, but I’ve painted everything,” Laws said. “My tagline on my card is ‘Painter of Music’ and to me that takes on a couple of different meanings. First, my works are often music-related in themselves, be it instruments or portraits of musicians. Second, I try to incorporate live music whenever I can while painting. Music flows through my works.” That connection between sound and sight drives much of Laws’ creative process. His performances, often featuring him painting live as musicians perform, have become a local sensation, offering audiences the chance to see a piece of art born from the rhythm and emotion of the moment. “Basquiat said, ‘Art is how we decorate space; music is how we decorate time,’ and I completely agree,” Laws said. “My approach is to bring them together for a singular experience. I associate many of my paintings with the musicians who were performing when it was created. I often have them sign the back of the canvases since the piece is infused with their music just as much as it is with paint colors. In a way, they take part in the very creation itself.” CONTINUED >

Laws often sets up at Kimbro’s Picking Parlor, a well-known local venue that welcomes artists and musicians alike. “Often when I have a commission piece that I need to work on, I find my studio too quiet and calm,” he said. “So, I’ll pack up my gear and head over to Kimbro’s Picking Parlor. Owner, Will Jordan, has given me permission to set up there any time, and I certainly take advantage of that. The work is just better when there are people around with the vibrations of live music pushing the piece along. I also let whoever stops by take the opportunity to try their hand at painting.” It’s this openness and sense of collaboration that have made Laws a fixture in the local creative community. His approach to painting live differs dramatically from his studio work, adapting to the spontaneous energy of an audience.

“Over the years of doing live paintings, I’ve developed a technique that works great,” Laws said. “It is the total opposite of how I used to do paintings in the studio. Usually, paintings are done from the back forward, building the background first and working your way to the foreground. However, when doing them in front of an audience, I want it to be obvious what I’m painting the entire time. So, I have to do my layers in different order than I normally would. My live technique is built for speed.” His love for live performance and interaction also led to the creation of Painting Jam, a concept born out of necessity but sustained by passion. “Painting in the studio is a rarity now. Too quiet,” Laws said. “Back in 2017, I started doing live streams of my paintings from the studio. To replicate some of the

live experience, I set up an iPad where I could see people commenting, and I’d answer their questions in real time. Since I like having music, I’d have some playing in the background. This caused my streams to be struck for copyright violations.” That obstacle inspired a creative workaround that evolved into something even bigger. To solve this problem, I decided to bring in Jessica Dawn to play in my studio while I was painting, and we streamed it. This was the first-ever Painting Jam,” Laws said. “Now these shows are a regular gathering place for artists, musicians, and anyone who wants to be part of a unique experience. I’ve probably done 30 by now and they are still going on today. I’ve had musicians like Bee Taylor, Cody Brooks, Eric Philipi, Carson Hill, Jake Burman, Anthony Adams, Liv Noelle, Kristin Larkin, Lauren Conklin, and many more.” Beyond his performances and commissions, Laws is deeply involved in giving back to his community.

Through his art, he’s helped raise funds for numerous local causes, blending creativity with compassion. “Williamson County is extremely generous,” he said. “I work with multiple organizations in town to help raise money for their causes. I paint at events, and the piece is auctioned off at the end of the show. It’s a great way to entertain the audience and helps raise funds for great causes. Also, the winner has a great story to tell about what they won. It’s rare you get to watch the art in your home being created!” From transforming blank canvases into explosions of color to turning live music into visible energy, Roy Laws’ work captures the rhythm of life in Williamson County. His art isn’t just something you see; it’s something you feel, hear, and remember. In every brushstroke, in every note, Laws paints not just music, but the heartbeat of our community. RoyLawsArt.com

Get To Know KARA LEWIS

The Storytelling Heart Behind The Camera

44

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

In this digital world overflowing with content, few creators stand out for their sincerity, intention, and heart. Videographer, storyteller, and viral influencer Kara Lewis has earned millions of followers by actually listening to people whose stories often go unheard. Her journey from a homeschooled California kid to a Nashville-based filmmaker impacting lives nationwide is anything but traditional, yet it’s exactly that unconventional path that shaped her into the creator she is today. Kara’s early years were far removed from phones, screens, and the pressures of digital life. “I grew up in California and I grew up homeschooled my entire life," Lewis says. "I didn't receive a phone until I was 18, so I would say that was pretty sheltered. But I appreciate it truly at this point in my life now.”

Homeschooling actually represented freedom to the soon-to-be 25-year-old. “I didn't mind it," she says. "I actually was given the option to go to school, and I choose not to, just because I loved it. My two older brothers did homeschooling as well, and I loved the path because we could go to Disneyland on a Tuesday afternoon. But it definitely made me have grit, because I had to get up and create my own schedule." Part of that schedule was dance. "I grew up as a dancer and a competitive gymnast my whole life," Lewis says. "Just being able to be involved with a lot of other things without having to go to school. Like the extracurricular activities, we would still go to football games and proms and dances. So I really had the best of both worlds.” CONTINUED >

The party lifestyle didn't last too long and eventually clarity came, as did the pull back home. “After a few years, I realized that this was not what God was calling me to be, and so I moved back home," Lewis says. "My parents had been praying for me." Soon after, Lewis met rising country artist Chase Matthew, who offered her a role on his tour. “It was truly taking a leap of faith walking up to his tour bus,” she says. But she jumped at the chance. “I ended up touring with him for over a year-and-a-half. It was just a crazy lifestyle, but that's what brought me out to Nashville.” The two eventually parted ways professionally but kept their friendship strong. “And now I'm out here just really trying to help the community of Nashville and Tennessee, in general.” Before Lewis ever thought about stories of strangers' lives, she filmed in the entertainment world, including in spaces that didn’t align with who she wanted to become. But her pivot toward heart-centered storytelling came soon after. “I had a friend in Los Angeles and she was like, 'You should go up to strangers and ask to film with them,'" she says. "And I was the second person on social media to do just that.” Shy from her homeschooled upbringing, she resisted at first. But eventually she tried. “I ended up walking up to a group of kids at a skate park. I posted the video, woke up at 2:00 in the morning, and it had 20,000 views.”

Her family were all creators, and creativity ran deep among the artists, musicians, and actors as Lewis envisioned a future in that world. “I was going to open up my own dance production company with my two older brothers," she says. "That was the vision and the dream, create something cool for artists and dancers, singers, actors, everything, just production.” But life apparently had different plans. “It just turned out to be not God's plan for my life." At 18, feeling the pull of independence, Lewis left home. “I rebelled from my parents and I left home, moved to LA and I experienced the whole party lifestyle and that world," she says. "I did that for a couple years. I don't regret it because I needed to. And beat my own drum. I had to learn the hard way.”

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

“NOW I SAY, ‘I’M A STORYTELLER. I WANT TO TELL YOUR STORY. WHAT DOES YOUR LIFE LOOK LIKE?’”

That moment changed everything for her. “That was my moment of proving and showing my parents that I worked extremely hard with these videos," says Lewis. "And my heart had completely changed. Rather than filming with actors and models and dancers, I wanted to help people. I wanted to be able to share their story.” Lewis shifted her entire approach. “Now I say, ‘I'm a storyteller. I want to tell your story. What does your life look like?’” One story, in particular, left a permanent mark. “Recently, my parents and I were in Nashville and we came across a disabled veteran who was homeless," she says. "He has terminal cancer and the VA really won't help him out much.” Lewis and her parents shared a meal with him. What followed was extraordinary. “Now White Castle has reached out. And we started a GoFundMe and raised $76,000 for him.” Her content exploded with 4.6 million followers on TikTok and 1.2 million on Instagram. She still finds it surreal. Brand deals allow her the financial freedom to give back. And monetized reels keep her work sustainable. CONTINUED >

With fiancé West Webb

Lewis' next chapter is already underway. “My fiancé, West, is also a filmmaker and our plan is to create a whole documentary on this,” she says. They’re two are currently working on a life-changing project. “We're building a woman a house and we've almost raised her $100,000.” And this is just the beginning. “The five-year plan is to continue doing this on a bigger scale," she says. "Partner with different brands, get them clothing, get them food, shelters, etc.” Today, Lewis lives in Hendersonville and feels at home in Tennessee. She shares what she most wants people to know: her heart. “I just want people to know my heart," she says. "It really is truly not about the views. It really is getting to see it all firsthand and seeing the transformation.”

48

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L I FE + CU LT U RE

Approaching strangers is still difficult for the formerly shy homeschooled girl. “I can't even lie, it's a little uncomfortable for me too, " Lewis says. "And I've had people decline to be interviewed. But at the end of the day, it's their life and their story, and I have to respect that.” Above all, she hopes people understand what drives her. “I really am in it for the right reasons, and I care about people," she says. "I'm only showing people a glimpse of my life and what it really looks like. But, yeah, I would just say I just want people to know my heart.” And after hearing her story, it’s impossible not to. STRENGTH The Women Behind Female Urology of Nashville

ARTICLE PROVIDED | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TINA GIONIS PHOTOGRAPHY

“My family has deep roots in medicine starting with my grandfather in Vietnam,” she says. “A medical mission trip in Angola, where I repaired complex fistulas for mothers, cemented my love and respect for medicine and showed me how often female health is neglected.”

Dr. Tara Allen

At Female Urology of Nashville, medicine is more than diagnosis and treatment. It is a deeply personal mission. The clinic’s all female team, led by Dr. Marcy Abel, Dr. Tara Allen, and Dr. Ly Hoang Roberts, blends clinical excellence with empathy, creating a space where women feel seen, heard, and empowered. Each of these physicians has forged a remarkable career in a highly specialized field, shaped by the experiences that first drew them to medicine and continue to inspire their passion for female urology today. For Dr. Abel, the path began early. “I was exposed to urology at the young age of 7 when I dealt with a congenital abnormality of my kidney,” she recalls. “From there, I was naturally drawn to urology and a future in medicine.” Though she practiced general urology for years, she always felt most fulfilled working with women and focusing on reconstructive female urology. Dr. Hoang Roberts’ journey is rooted in family and global service. “My family has deep roots in medicine starting with my grandfather in Vietnam,” she says. “A medical mission trip in Angola, where I repaired complex fistulas for mothers, cemented my love and respect for medicine and showed me how often female health is neglected.” The experience, she adds, opened her eyes to the need for better women’s health care both abroad and at home. Dr. Allen’s calling was sparked by a personal childhood memory. “Growing up on a farm, I had a grandmother who was so healthy she could herd cattle on foot well into her 80s, but during this activity she would soak her clothes every time,” she says. “It pained me to see how someone so healthy dealt with something so humiliating that I now know was so easy to fix.” That early exposure, she explains, made the quality of life issues in urology resonate deeply with her. Female Urology of Nashville distinguishes itself not only through expertise but also through heartfelt compassion and a shared mission to elevate the lives of the women they serve. “Our mission is to provide a focused clinic tailored to the urologic needs of women that is different from what you would find in a general urology practice,” Dr. Abel explains. “Every decision, from waiting room decor to staff training, centers around truly caring for our patients and improving the symptoms that brought them in.” CONTINUED >

Dr. Marcy Abel

“Our mission is to treat each other and our patients as women caring for women.”

54

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Dr. Allen echoes that sentiment, adding that the clinic’s environment is intentionally warm, welcoming, and personal. “When women are seen in our clinic, they leave feeling like they have just visited a friend and are excited about the adventures we are going to take together,” she says. “By loving what we do and loving the population we focus on, we are able to make treatments that could be daunting seem well within reach for everyone.” From incontinence to pelvic floor disorders, many of the conditions these physicians treat are common yet often kept private. Breaking that silence and empowering women to seek help is a cornerstone of their work. “Statistics show that 40 percent of people will suffer from incontinence and 30 percent of women experience pelvic organ prolapse,” Dr. Abel notes. “When patients come to us after being dismissed elsewhere and finally feel understood, that is empowering.” Dr. Hoang Roberts adds, “Many women chalk their symptoms up to age or childbirth, but just because something is common doesn’t make it normal. If it bothers you, you don’t have to live like that. We can help.” Dr. Allen has noticed a cultural shift as well. “Social media has been wonderful in giving exposure to these issues,” she says. “Women are venting their frustrations and learning their options a lot of times before they even get into the office. I believe we are entering a new era of women who do not accept that it is ok to leak.” Together, the three physicians represent one of the rare all female urology teams in medicine, a dynamic that shapes both their care and their connection to patients. “We appreciate that women are the cornerstone of their partners, children, and parents,” says Dr. Abel. “Our mission is to treat each other and our patients as women caring for women.” Dr. Hoang Roberts agrees. “Patients appreciate being heard, being in a comfortable and refined setting, and receiving the best updated medical advice without judgment. It is the kind of care I would want as a patient, and it is what we strive to give.” For Dr. Allen, teamwork is one of the practice’s greatest strengths. “We all bring different strengths to our partnership and together we are so much better than any of us would be on our own,” she says. “This power we harness together allows us to touch so many lives and creates a team positive environment that patients regularly compliment us on.”

Their commitment is magnified by meaningful| moments that remind them of the human impact behind every appointment. “The best referral is one made by a family member or friend,” Dr. Abel says. “The compliment I love most is when patients tell me they are so glad they finally came.” Dr. Hoang Roberts treasures the emotional milestones. “I have patients who cry tears of joy because they finally feel better after years of suffering,” she says. “Those moments mean everything to me.” Dr. Allen recently received her own reminder of her impact. “Just today I had a patient in her late 70s come in because her older sister was a new woman after meeting me,” she says. “She wanted some of what her sister now had. That is the ultimate honor.” Serving Williamson County and greater Nashville has added richness to their personal and professional stories. Dr. Abel, who has lived in Nashville for decades, calls the region “a beautiful state with generous and kind people.” Dr. Allen, originally from Mississippi, convinced her family to relocate as well and now enjoys life on their family farm in Thompson’s Station. The practice brings a boutique sensibility to healthcare, balancing specialization with warmth. “We often have several treatment options,” Dr. Abel says. “The solution must align with a patient’s personal health philosophy, time, and budget.” Outside the clinic, each physician invests in her own well-being so she can continue leading with excellence. Dr. Abel runs and attends Orange Theory classes. Dr. Hoang Roberts cooks with her young children, finding joy in blending home and work life. She continues, "Both my husband and I are from Texas but Nashville has been like a second home to us- we even got married here! So moving here to be close to family on both sides, to raise our kids in the down to earth southern hospitality, we can’t ask for anything better!" Dr. Allen splits time between the clinic and her second home, embracing family life with her partner Brad and her two bonus children. At Female Urology of Nashville, expertise meets empathy and medical care meets human understanding. Through every consultation, procedure, and shared smile, Dr. Abel, Dr. Allen, and Dr. Hoang Roberts embody a quiet strength. They are shaping lives, elevating the standard of female urology, and empowering women throughout Middle Tennessee with knowledge, dignity, and hope. FUNUrology.com

THE P owe r O f FLOW “ONCE THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM STARTS RETAINING LESS FLUID, CLIENTS EXPERIENCE BENEFITS FOR LONGER AND LONGER FROM THEIR SESSION.”

Wellness trends come and go, but lymphatic treatments are proving to be far more than a passing fad. By activating the body’s natural drainage system, these treatments reduce inflammation, support immunity, and promote a glow that starts from the inside out. Whether you’re looking to enhance your wellness routine, recover after travel, or simply give your body a much-needed reset, give lymphatic treatments a try.

LYMPHATIC TREATMENTS ARE A WELLNESS ESSENTIAL

We spoke with Healthcare Optimization Expert Rachel Boryachinskiy at The Tox Nashville about redefining what it means to care for your body.

FOR READERS WHO MAY BE NEW TO THE CONCEPT, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE?

Our patented technique activates the lymphatic and digestive systems to rid the body of lymph fluid that causes bloating, swelling, and a number of other issues. The treatment is a safe, non-invasive way to help lean, sculpt, and improve your overall look and feel.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST COMMON BENEFITS CLIENTS EXPERIENCE AFTER A LYMPHATIC TREATMENT?

Clients usually feel lighter and leaner after each session, which is the instant benefit. There are so many long-term benefits from lymphatic treatment including improved health, strengthened immune function, decreased fluid/swelling, less puffiness, glowing skin, weight loss, and hormone-balancing. It also helps with post-surgery recovery. There are a number of conditions that benefit from lymphatic and digestive treatment, too.

HOW DOES STRESS AFFECT THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM?

Stress contributes to bloating, swelling, increased cortisol levels, fatigue, sluggishness, and even decreased immune function. Most of the fluid/swelling from stress is held by the lymphatic system with lymph nodes all throughout your body.

IS THERE AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR LYMPHATIC TREATMENT?

Our clients are men and women at least 18 years old. Our clients range from 25-60 by age. An ideal candidate would be someone who feels sluggish, puffy face in the morning, bloating, fatigue, or feeling stuck.

IF SOMEONE HAS NEVER TRIED LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE BEFORE, WHAT SHOULD THEY EXPECT DURING THEIR FIRST SESSION?

New clients can expect a luxury spa experience with highly trained technicians that utilize our patented technique to help sculpt, lean, and improve our client's health. The technique should not be painful, but can be a little intense. It's definitely a fabulous session.

HOW QUICKLY DO MOST PEOPLE NOTICE RESULTS, AND HOW LONG DO THOSE RESULTS TYPICALLY LAST?

Clients usually instantly feel lighter and more energized right after their session. For their initial treatment, benefits last anywhere from 1-3 weeks. Results do vary by client. To achieve optimal results, we recommend coming in every 2-3 weeks for the initial 3-5 sessions. Once the lymphatic system starts retaining less fluid, clients experience benefits for longer and longer from their session. It does take a couple of sessions to achieve longer-term results.

LYMPHATIC HEALTH IS A GROWING TREND IN BEAUTY AND WELLNESS. WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S GAINING SO MUCH POPULARITY NOW?

This is really only my opinion, but I believe we are unaware of how much the lymphatic and digestive systems control our overall health and wellness. It's also not very sexy to talk about the lymphatic system. However, with the growing focus on holistic health, the lymphatic system has really come into the forefront. To really activate and improve the function of your lymphatic system, The Tox Technique is the very best. I believe this will continue to become more popular.

ARE THERE SPECIFIC LIFESTYLE TIPS SUCH AS HYDRATION, DIET, OR MOVEMENT THAT YOU RECOMMEND TO MAXIMIZE RESULTS BETWEEN SESSIONS?

Yes, we recommend light exercise, sauna, steam, and moving around. The lymphatic system will continue to remove excess fluid 24-72 hours after a session. It is important to stay hydrated, add electrolytes when needed, and eat cleanly to help maximize results. We provide a recommendation in our post-session follow-ups. TheToxTechnique.com

A Partnership Built on Purpose Dr. Christina Rahm & Clayton Thomas | The ROOT Brands What was happening in your life when the idea for the ROOT Brands first took shape? Christina: ROOT started with a problem I couldn’t ignore. It grew out of the work I’d been doing for years as a scientist and formulator. I was trying to protect my family, and my work kept showing me things that didn’t sit right. When ROOT officially launched just before the world shut down, it reinforced why this work mattered. I wasn’t looking to create products for the market. I was trying to get to the root of what wasn’t working and find solutions I could trust for my family. Clayton: When Christina and I came together, it was clear her work wasn’t theoretical. I’d spent years around the realities of this industry, and I could see she was solving real problems with a level of discipline I rarely see. That alignment is what made us realize there was an opportunity to build something meaningful together. How did your individual strengths shape what ROOT became? Christina: I focus on the science, the sourcing, and the responsibility that comes with formulating products people put in and on their bodies every day. From ingredient selection to patented purification processes, quality and oversight matter at every step. Clayton: My role is building the structure around Christina’s science so it can grow responsibly. That means navigating compliance, global systems, and long-term decisions that protect integrity as the company scales.

What sets ROOT apart in today’s wellness landscape? Christina: Control and accountability. We built our own manufacturing systems at Strata Biotech so we can oversee every step, from raw materials to finished product. With today’s level of environmental exposure, oversight isn’t optional. It’s a responsibility to protect what goes into the body, not just what goes on the label. Clayton: I’m married to a world-class patent scientist and nano-biotechnologist, so I have a front-row seat to the rigor behind these formulations. My responsibility is making sure that level of science can scale responsibly and still reach people where they are, without wellness feeling exclusive. This company has grown globally, but you’re based here in Franklin. How do you think about responsibility as ROOT continues to expand? Christina: My faith is at the center of everything I do. I believe we’re called to use our gifts wisely and in service of others. Science is a tool, but purpose is what guides it. ROOT was never just about making supplements. It was about using what I’ve been given to help people, care for the world around us, and leave things better than we found them. Being rooted here keeps that mission grounded and personal.

The Emerging Actor Is Bringing Fresh Energy To TV's High Stakes Drama 9-1-1: Nashville

For most actors, the road to landing a major network role is a long and winding one, and often filled with rejection. But for newcomer Hunter McVey, the journey to 9-1-1: Nashville moved at lightning speed, mirroring the adrenaline-fueled intensity of the series itself. The Franklin-born actor had barely wrapped his first audition tape when his entire life changed. “That was the first audition tape I ever submitted," says McVey. "It was for a different role, but I had a feeling it may get me in front of the correct people. And then a month later, I was contacted to do a reading for 9-1-1: Nashville. I got the role. We started filming about six days later. So there was no time to think. There was no time to process. I didn't have a point where I said, ‘Hey, this is a leap of faith we're taking into this industry.’ It was just go, go, go. Here's the opportunity. Let's run. Let's start. And it's been one of the best things that's ever happened to me in my life.” McVey didn’t need months on set to know he’d found the career he was meant for. The realization hit immediately. "It was very, very evident to me after really the first day of filming scenes with dialogue,” he says. His first big day paired him with LeAnn Rimes, who plays his mom, Dixie. “I was extremely nervous. And we had eight or nine hours worth of two scenes to film. And that day, it went by in a flash because I was so present and so engaged and was able to feel every single emotion. I had never found anything in my life, besides the gym, that allowed me to be so present and so engaged and so fulfilled. I feel like a kid when I go to work.” CONTINUED >

“I had never found anything in my life, besides the gym, that allowed me to be so present and so engaged and so fulfilled.” Success was quick, but as is normal, not without its challenges. “The biggest challenge has been not creating my own schedule, like I was used to,” McVey says. “It's a 200-person production. And it takes a lot to get the ship moving. And once it's going, I don't know how they stop it, to be honest. But it's a lot of not being too obsessed with the outcome and more so enjoying every single day and just feeling blessed that I get to be a part of the chaos.” Though the fitness influencer didn’t have too much time to prepare or practice his acting technique, he approached his character, Blue Bennings, with total focus.“My biggest focus was learning Blue, learning why he is the way he is. That was my biggest priority,” says McVey. The process was organic. “Blue, he's a newbie. He doesn't really know what the heck he's doing. And it parallels exactly into my life as Hunter McVey because I don't really know what the heck I'm doing. So it's pretty natural.” Stepping onto a TV set for the first time taught him a few lessons about the acting business. “The first day on set was extremely overwhelming,” he says. And one moment in particular still makes him laugh. "After hours shooting a scene, someone said, 'turn around.' I asked, 'What does turn around

mean?’ And everyone kind of started dying of laughter. ‘We're shooting all the same stuff from the other side.’ I had no idea.” Luckily for him, he’s surrounded by seasoned actors like Chris O'Donell and Jessica Capshaw. “That's something I've been able to feel," McVey says. "And that's something that allows me to bring confidence into the scenes now. I try to just shut this mouth of mine and listen. And I'll learn a lot if I can do that.” Long days on set energize him. “The last week, I was on set 15 hours a day for three days straight and had to learn 20 pages and a new dialogue," he says. "But there was not a second in my head where I said, ‘I can't do this. I don't want to do this.’ There's no other option. I get it done. And it's given me a lot of confidence as an individual during the last six months.” When asked if he has a favorite moment on set, McVey says there are too many to choose from. “Every single day there's fits of laughter, there's deep discussions about the universe and God and reality and fulfillment and family," he says. "Every day is a productive day.” But one thing he really loves? “I will say one thing that I do really enjoy is stunts," he says. "And I love adrenaline. I always like being in the moment. And the stunts make me feel more present than ever.” CONTINUED >

McVey was born in Franklin though he grew up in Southern Indiana and Northern Virginia. His parents moved back to Franklin in 2017 and he spent a lot of time here. “It's where I've met the most incredible people, friends, family, co-workers of my entire lifetime,” he says. He talks fondly about riding his motorcycle through Leiper’s Fork and the Natchez Trace. “The beauty of Franklin is one of my favorite parts.” In fact, his first-ever scene for 9-1-1: Nashville brought everything full circle: “Driving my ‘66 Mustang up to Raleigh Manor... on that road is where I learned how to ride my motorcycle," he says. "Now we're seeing it in Blue Bennings’ life. And it's just such a surreal feeling.” So what's next for the emerging actor? “I think if I were to tell you, it would be setting ceilings,” McVey says. But he does know he wants more acting -- drama, comedy, “anything” that challenges him. And as for the second half of Season 1 that premieres on January 8? “If any of the viewers thought that the first six episodes were crazy disasters or crazy family dynamics, then buckle up because the next 12 bring it to a new level," he says. "But that's all I'll say.” As one of 9-1-1: Nashville’s most exciting new faces, McVey says, “I enjoy making human connection. I think it's one of the most important things that we have,” he says. @hunter_mcvey / @911nashville

SPOTLIGHT ON SKIN HEALTH: Why a Yearly Skin Check Matters More Than You Think Every year, millions of Americans make routine appointments for dental cleanings, yearly physicals, or eye exams — but far fewer schedule what dermatologists consider just as essential: a full-body skin examination (FBE). As skin cancer rates continue to rise nationwide, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) encourages adults to prioritize an annual skin check with a board-certified dermatologist.

What Happens During a Skin Check?

At Change Dermatology, we see firsthand how early detection saves lives. A simple 10-minute exam can identify concerns long before they become dangerous — and for many of our patients, that peace of mind is invaluable.

• Color variation

Why a Full-Body Skin Exam Should Be a Yearly Habit Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, and melanoma — the deadliest type — is highly treatable when caught early. AAD guidelines emphasize the importance of routine screening, especially for individuals who have • A personal or family history of skin cancer • A history of blistering sunburns • Fair skin, light eyes, or red/blonde hair • Excessive sun exposure or tanning bed use • Numerous or atypical moles

www.changedermatology.com 615-656-4055 7065 Moores Ln, Ste 100, Brentwood, TN

A dermatologist examines the skin on your scalp, face, ears, trunk, arms, legs, hands, feet, and hard-to-see areas like between the toes or behind the knees. Using dermoscopy, we evaluate moles for the ABCDEs: • Asymmetry • Border irregularity • Diameter larger than a pencil eraser • Evolving (changing over time) If anything appears suspicious, we may perform a quick in-office biopsy. Most are benign, but when they’re not, early detection makes all the difference.

WINTER IS THE PERFECT TIME FOR YOUR SKIN EXAM

While many people associate sun damage with summer, dermatologists often see patients more consistently in the colder months — thanks in part to winter-skin frustrations and a natural tendency to spend more time indoors. Benefits include: • Less tanned skin, making changes easier to detect • Better appointment availability • Comfort while healing from biopsies

Your Skin Is Worth the Appointment Whether it’s your first skin check or your annual visit, Change Dermatology is here to guide you. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Cambio provides expert, compassionate care to keep your skin healthy year-round. Schedule your yearly skin exam — it could save your life.

Winter Skin Tips to Keep You Glowing 1. Choose gentle, fragrance-free cleansers. 2. Take shorter, lukewarm showers. 3. Use thick, ceramide-rich moisturizers. 4. Wear soft, breathable cotton layers. 5. Add a cool mist humidifier to your bedroom. 6. Use oatmeal baths for itchy skin. 7. See a dermatologist if dryness, redness, or eczema persists. The Power of Prevention AAD recommends: • Daily sunscreen with SPF 30+ • Protective clothing and hats • Avoiding tanning beds • Monthly self-skin exams

Here in Tennessee many residents also carry unique, often overlooked risk factors. A large portion of our community has a history of farming, outdoor labor, or spending long workdays in open fields where shade is limited and UV exposure is constant. In addition, high‑elevation living — whether from time spent in the Appalachians or other elevated regions — in‑ creases UV intensity, raising long‑term risk Many people who have moved here from states with year‑round sunshine such as Florida, California, Texas, or Arizona also bring decades of cumulative sun exposure with them. All these factors significantly increase lifetime UV exposure and raise the overall risk for both melanoma and non‑melanoma skin cancers — making a yearly skin exam especially important for long‑term skin health.

Leap of Faith Lacey Grace Aesthetics Takes Root in Grassland

S

tarting a new business is often described as a leap of faith, but for Lacey Steih, owner of Lacey Grace Aesthetics, it felt more like stepping onto a path paved by long-held intentions. Steih, a licensed aesthetician who has lived in the area for two decades, recently launched her independent studio within the supportive environment of Salon Suites of Grassland, bringing a unique blend of results-driven treatments and restorative relaxation to a part of Williamson County she has long called home. The decision to establish a presence in Grassland was not accidental; it was the realization of a years-long vision. “Many years ago, when I first dreamed of becoming an aesthetician, I prayed about one day opening a space in the Grassland area,” Lacey said. “Having lived here for more than 20 years, I’ve always loved this community, and I noticed there were no facialists along Hillsboro Road between Green Hills and Franklin.” The location felt instinctively right. The actual move to independent ownership, however, happened with surprising speed. Seeking greater flexibility in her professional life, Lacey began exploring the idea of a change. “Once I started praying and seriously considering the shift, everything fell into place surprisingly quickly,” she recalled. “Within about

two weeks, I had left my previous workplace and signed my lease. It truly felt like the prayers I had years before paved the way.” This rapid transition was a major shift, especially for someone who, just months before, was hesitant about the responsibilities of ownership. If you had asked me in January whether I’d go out on my own, I would have said absolutely not. Especially as I approached turning 50! I wasn’t sure I wanted the responsibility of owning a business. Now, I’m incredibly grateful this opportunity opened up when it did, and even more grateful that I chose to step into it.” The transition from employee to independent owner involved countless details, but the salon suite model provided a crucial framework. Lacey noted that while she focuses entirely on elevating the client experience within her studio, the management of the building’s exterior and shared areas by Salon Suites of Grassland allows her to keep her time and attention focused on her clients. “Knowing that my clients are greeted by a professional, well-maintained space from the moment they park to the moment they walk through my door has made the transition so much smoother,” she explained. “Their support in managing the aspects outside my suite has truly helped me create the warm, consistent, and professional atmosphere I want every client to feel.” CONTINUED >

This professional environment is essential for attracting a premium clientele who expect the highest standards, something Williamson County is known for. Lacey focuses on corrective facials, which combine targeted treatments for specific skin concerns with a calming, restorative facial massage. She notes that the private nature of the suite greatly enhances the experience. “Having my own private suite has allowed me to create a space that truly promotes peace and relaxation. It attracts clients who appreciate an environment where they can be completely themselves and feel that their time is truly their own.” The studio’s design is a thoughtful extension of this philosophy. Collaborating with ECH Interior Design owner Elisha Howell, Lacey curated a space that reflects her clean, calming aesthetic using soft, neutral tones. The luxury experience is holistic, extending beyond the decor to the comfort of a heated treatment bed, luxury linens, and even the soundtrack. Inspired by a massage training retreat she attended in Costa Rica, Lacey opted for a coffee-house style playlist over traditional spa music. “Since making the switch, so many clients have commented on how much more soothing and enjoyable they find it compared to typical instrumental spa music. It brings a fun relaxing element to my studio.” While confident in the financial side of her business, thanks to a background in economics and a CPA husband, Lacey admits the entrepreneurial journey still presents challenges, primarily in creative content creation. “The biggest challenge I continue to navigate is staying consistent on social media,” she shared. “It’s the marketing side that stretches me the most.” However, the location’s professionalism allows her to direct her energy where it is most needed. The local market has responded enthusiastically to having a high-end skincare option in Grassland. Lacey’s grand opening was well-attended, and she remains grateful for the community’s support.

Being part of the suite community has also been an unexpected benefit. “From day one, I have been warmly welcomed by all the tenants, and it’s clear that everyone genuinely wants each other to succeed,” Lacey said. “There’s a true spirit of collaboration. Whether it’s sharing ideas, supporting one another, or helping meet the needs of the community as a whole.” This sense of encouragement is invaluable for a new business owner. For others considering a similar independent path, Lacey is an advocate of taking the plunge. “If you have a passion, a clear vision, and the desire to grow both professionally and personally, I say go for it!” Her decision to establish Lacey Grace Aesthetics at Salon Suites of Grassland has proven to be an affirmation that planting roots in the right location, surrounded by a supportive community, is the key to cultivating a successful high-end business. Paws & Purpose Inside the Heart of Fluff & Boots To celebrate the brand’s first year, and its growing impact, we sat down with owner and local entrepreneur Ashley O'Bryan to talk inspiration, community, and the “pawesome” purpose behind Fluff & Boots.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START FLUFF & BOOTS?

My first inspiration was the challenge of finding high-quality, cohesive lifestyle products for my own cats that were functional, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing in my home. Outside of premium cat furniture,

most cat-centric products felt mismatched, hodgepodge, or overly quirky. I wanted to create beautiful products that were ethically made with premium, non-toxic materials to ensure durability, safety, and long-lasting comfort for both cats and their humans. My second inspiration was the idea of building a double-bottom-line business that could not only sell products, but also drive real change in the feline welfare space. I wanted to make a meaningful impact by supporting stray and feral cats, combating animal cruelty, and providing education and resources. By building a

community of cat parents who share these values and “give a fluff” about felines, I knew we could work together to do so. Combining beautiful, functional products with a purpose-driven business is what really inspired me to start Fluff & Boots.

HOW HAS YOUR CONNECTION TO CYPRUS, THE "ISLAND OF CATS," SHAPED THE FLUFF & BOOTS STORY?

My connection to Cyprus is woven into the heart of Fluff & Boots. It’s where the real Fluff and Boots came into my life, and where I first fell in love with the resilience and charm of community street cats. I became a first-time purr-parent in Cyprus, and without that experience, I never would have realized the need for better cat-centric products. Cyprus reinforced a style that blends beautifully with harmonizing tones, clean lines, and an effortless sense of cozy luxury. There’s a natural warmth to Mediterranean spaces and a refined simplicity to broader European interiors that creates a feeling of balance, comfort, and calm while still playing with color. I wanted our products to reflect that same effortless, playful elegance with pieces that elevate a home without overwhelming it, and that feel as good to cats as they look to their humans. On a deeper level, my time in Cyprus sparked a passion for feline welfare and the importance of caring for stray and feral cats. The island taught me that all cats deserve comfort, love, and beauty in their lives, and that philosophy continues to shape everything we create.

AS A NASHVILLE-FOUNDED, FEMALEOWNED BUSINESS, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE PART OF THIS CITY’S CREATIVE AND ENTREPRENEURIAL COMMUNITY?

Being Nashville-founded means being part of a city that never stops hustling. For me, it’s a city where hustle meets heart in the sense that everyone is striving for their own success, yet still shows up for others with genuine support, sharing of resources and ideas, and a willingness to lift each other up along the way. The energy here is contagious, and it pushes me to innovate, collaborate, and grow Fluff & Boots alongside a kind-hearted community of creatives, entrepreneurs, and dreamers making bold ideas happen every day. YOUR PARTNERSHIPS WITH ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THE NASHVILLE HUMANE SOCIETY AND NASHVILLE CAT RESCUE ARE CENTRAL TO YOUR MISSION. WHY ARE THESE COLLABORATIONS SO IMPORTANT TO YOU?

Fluff & Boots has always been about more than just products; it’s about making a meaningful impact for cats and the people who love them. Working with organizations that share our values lets us support cats in need, provide resources, and help build a community of cat parents who care just as much as we do. Engaging locally is especially important because it allows us to see the direct impact of our efforts, strengthen connections within our community, and inspire others to get involved through first-hand events and experiences. For me, it’s incredibly rewarding to see the tangible impact of these partnerships and to know that, together, we’re helping cats lead safer, happier lives in the Nashville area and beyond.

“My time in Cyprus sparked a passion for feline welfare and the importance of caring for stray and feral cats." FLUFF & BOOTS IS CELEBRATING ONE YEAR! WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES AND PROUDEST MOMENTS DURING THIS FIRST YEAR IN BUSINESS?

Being patient with slow, intentional growth has been a challenge. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of launching a brand and be tempted to make decisions that could lead to faster growth, but compromise our mission and business ethos. From day one, I’ve chosen to keep the business self-funded and influencer-independent, and to strive for authentic, meaningful connections with our community. We refuse to compromise on quality and ethics, or to put profit over purpose, and that commitment sometimes means progress takes a little longer. At the same time, hearing how much customers value the thought and care behind everything we make, seeing so many cats enjoy the products, and knowing our rescue initiatives are making a real difference and literally saving lives, are incredibly proud moments.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR FLUFF & BOOTS IN YEAR TWO?

In year two, we’re really focused on deepening the sense of community and the “we give a fluff” mantra that’s always been at the heart of Fluff & Boots. We’re planning more in-person events and experiences that bring cat parents together and celebrate the joy of living with cats. It’s important to create moments that help people connect, learn, and feel inspired. We’re also continuing to grow our partnerships in the feline welfare space and explore thoughtful ways to expand our product offerings while staying true to our mission of quality, ethics, and purpose. WHERE STILLNESS FINDS YOU

They explored every corner of the city and countryside, falling in love with its charm, culture and natural beauty.

Stillness is something most people chase but rarely catch, which is why Kevin and Amalia Logan built a retreat where stillness comes looking for you. North Star Nature Suites™, an intimate and design driven couples retreat in the Tennessee mountains, was founded in 2024 with a clear mission. The Logans envisioned a property that blended the restorative grounding of nature with the thoughtful comforts of modern luxury. Their journey began far from the foothills of Tennessee, but eventually led to a mountaintop that felt unmistakably like home.

“After raising our blended family in Minnesota, we had the opportunity to move to Nashville in 2021,” Amalia said. “It was just the two of us so we lived downtown while we determined where we wanted to settle down.” They explored every corner of the city and countryside, falling in love with its charm, culture and natural beauty. But after a year, the noise and congestion pushed them to seek something deeper. “We were ready to get out of the city and we were at a point in our careers where we wanted to do something more meaningful.” The spark arrived through an unexpected article about glamping. “A light went off and we looked at each other and said ‘This is it! This is something that would allow us to marry our careers and build something we can really be passionate about,’” Amalia said. CONTINUED >

“When we first stepped foot on this beautiful unspoiled slice of heaven, we felt at peace as though this is where we were always meant to be.”

94

M UST SE E | TRAVEL

That idea became the foundation for a refined couples retreat that lives in harmony with nature, elevates comfort and creates space for connection and inspiration. “We are no strangers to what defines luxury and the absence of luxurious experiences in nature was the inspiration for us to build the ultimate environment for connecting with one another in nature, but in perfect comfort.” Their combined backgrounds made the vision even richer. Amalia brings nearly three decades of interior design experience through her firm, Matriarch Design, while Kevin spent 25 years shaping luxury identity and member experience for a major fitness brand. Together, they set out to design an immersive destination that felt refined, soulful and grounded in nature. The first challenge was finding the right property. “We looked at nearly 100 properties before finding this one,” Kevin said. The moment they found the land, they knew. “When we first stepped foot on this beautiful unspoiled slice of heaven, we felt at peace as though this is where we were always meant to be.” Climbing the ridge where the eight Nature Suites™ now sit, they were stunned. “Our breath was taken away,” Amalia said. “Overlooking 60,000 acres of state protected land, Amalia’s vision came to life.” Their design choices reflect deep respect for the land. “We wanted others to experience that same sense of belonging,” they explained. “We thoughtfully considered every decision from the initial sketch of the buildings to carefully clearing the site for optimal views and privacy. From the topography and use of space right through to the textures of the materials and even our signature fragrance, each suite is simple in form and beautifully detailed.” The result is a five-star suite immersed in nature, crafted to feel intentional rather than imposed. The experience begins long before guests step inside their suite. “We have intentionally designed North Star Nature Suites™ for guests to feel excitement and anticipation ahead of their stay, solitude during their stay and a longing to return after their departure,” they said. Visitors often describe a shift the moment they turn onto the quiet country roads that lead to the property, winding alongside pastures and fields with mountains as the backdrop. By the time they cross the Caney Fork River and arrive at the gated entrance, calm has already begun its work.

“If you fall in love with any of the furnishings, rugs, decor, bedding or our signature fragrance and soaps, Amalia can order it and have it delivered to your home.”

Nature itself serves as healer, guide and companion. “Being in nature helps people heal by calming the mind and body,” they said. Zero noise pollution and zero light pollution give guests the rare gift of unbroken quiet. “We have created a place where guests can feel a sense of escapism, natural balance and harmony.” Inside each Nature Suite™, luxury appears in thoughtful, comforting touches. Guests are welcomed by their signature fragrance and sweeping mountain views seen through floor to ceiling windows. Centered on a large fireplace, a comfy king bed is cloaked in Belgian linens and European goose down bedding while a cozy reading corner and romantic dining area set the tone for relaxation and connection. A well equipped kitchen and spa-inspired bathroom with heated floors, smart toilet and signature soaps add to

the indulgent experience. Outdoors, a private hot tub, pizza oven, grill, smokeless firepit, heated chairs and panoramic views invite slow evenings under the stars. Personalization is woven throughout the stay. Guests can request curated packages, take a UTV excursion to Lost Creek Falls or shop an in-suite collection curated by Amalia. “If you fall in love with any of the furnishings, rugs, decor, bedding or our signature fragrance and soaps, Amalia can order it and have it delivered to your home,” Kevin added. For Amalia, luxury is not about excess. “Modern luxury is about environments that evoke feelings of warmth, energy and simple pleasure. Spaces that are soft, embracing and inspire a sense of harmony and natural balance,” she said. “Bringing my ethos to North

Star Nature Suites™ enables our guests to experience an aesthetic that feels effortless yet intentional, approachable yet sophisticated and simple yet curated while being fully immersed in nature.” The emotional impact of their work has surprised and moved them. Guestbook entries have become treasured keepsakes. One guest wrote, “ This is exactly what my heart needed after recently losing my Dad. I needed space to breathe and start the healing process. This atmosphere gave me that peace!” Another guest wrote, “Your design inspires me deeply as a fellow designer. Every thoughtful choice reminds me of why I fell in love with creating spaces in the first place.” A couple, while spending several days there during the husband's terminal illness, wrote, “We feel closer to heaven after spending time here.” “Overwhelmingly, guests leave messages of gratitude for creating and sharing this special place with them,” Amalia said. Operating the retreat themselves gives the Logans a rare connection to their guests. “Because we live on site, we have the opportunity to engage with our guests and deliver an exceptional experience. We are involved in everything from reservations to housekeeping and guest experience to groundskeeping, ensuring each stay feels curated and each guest feels special.” Kevin said. Located near Scotts Gulf State Wilderness Park, Fall Creek Falls, Rock Island and Burgess Falls, the retreat offers easy access to some of Tennessee’s most stunning natural landscapes. It has quickly become a destination for anniversaries, honeymoons, proposals, restorative company retreats and intimate celebrations. For Kevin and Amalia, the mission is simple: create a place where beauty, presence and connection rise to the surface, effortlessly. And every person who arrives at North Star Nature Suites™ discovers that stillness is not something you must search for, because in this quiet mountaintop sanctuary, stillness finds you. Adult Dental Expansion:

A Modern Approach to Sleep and TMJ Healing For many adults, chronic fatigue, morning headaches, jaw pain, and snoring are dismissed as the unavoidable effects of stress or aging. Yet these symptoms often signal a deeper, structural problem: an airway that is too small to support healthy breathing during sleep. As dentistry has evolved, we now understand how underdeveloped arches and narrow jaws contribute to both sleep apnea and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. One of the most promising, non-surgical approaches for adults is the use of removable dental expanders designed to gently widen the upper arch and support improved nasal breathing. Understanding the Problem: Constricted Jaws and a Restricted Airway A narrow upper jaw limits the space available for the tongue. When the tongue lacks room, it tends to fall backward during sleep, partially blocking the airway and contributing to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) as well as loud snoring. This restricted arch also forces the lower jaw into a less stable position, increasing strain on the temporomandibular joints. Over time, the combination of airway obstruction and joint stress can lead to poor sleep quality, chronic pain, and overall systemic fatigue.

Dr. Kellye Rice | DMD, FAGD, ABDSM Dr. Kellye Rice is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a Diplomate of the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and a graduate of Airway Health Solutions, dedicated to the ongoing care of children and adults with airway and breathing problems.

Historically, it was believed that adults could not achieve meaningful skeletal expansion because their sutures were fully fused. Today, research and clinical outcomes show that adults can experience significant improvement with removable, physiologically guided expanders when used consistently and under experienced supervision. How Removable Expanders Work Unlike traditional fixed expanders used in children, adult removable expansion appliances are designed to stimulate gentle remodeling of the mid-face and dental arches. These devices apply light, consistent forces that encourage the palate and surrounding structures to widen over time. While the rate of expansion is slower in adults than in adolescents, the biological process remains the same: the appliance guides the jaw toward its genetically intended width. Most adult expanders are worn during afternoons, evenings and overnight, making them convenient for busy schedules. Because they are removable, comfort and compliance are significantly improved compared to older, cemented devices. The Airway Benefits As the upper arch widens, the tongue gains more functional room, reducing its tendency to collapse into the airway during sleep. Patients often report improvements such as: - Reduced or eliminated snoring - More consistent nasal breathing - Fewer nighttime awakenings - Improved oxygen saturation during sleep - Enhanced energy and mental clarity during the day By improving nasal airflow and tongue posture, expansion supports more stable sleep patterns and can dramatically reduce symptoms of mild to moderate sleep apnea. Even for patients using CPAP therapy, expansion can make the treatment more comfortable and reduce required pressure settings. TMJ Relief Through Balanced Jaw Position TMJ disorders often arise when the jaws are forced into an unnatural, constricted relationship. A narrow upper arch can prevent the lower jaw from resting in a healthy position, leading to joint compression, muscle tension, and inflammation. Expansion helps decompress the TMJ by: - Allowing the lower jaw to settle more naturally - Reducing the biting interferences that strain the joints - Lowering nighttime clenching and grinding caused by airway stress - Improving muscle balance and facial symmetry As the airway opens and breathing improves, the nervous system relaxes, reducing the parafunctional habits that contribute to TMJ pain. A Non-Surgical Path to Better Health Adult removable expanders offer a conservative, biologically sound approach to improving both airway health and TMJ function. Patients often experience benefits that extend beyond the mouth, including deeper sleep, reduced headaches, easier nasal breathing, and improved overall vitality. When guided by a dentist trained in airway-centered care, expansion therapy can be life-changing. For adults seeking a non-invasive approach to sleep apnea and TMJ issues, removable expanders represent a powerful, modern solution.

The Heart of Franklin’s Pet Community

Inside Williamson County Animal Hospital

“It has been a unique Walk into Williamson County Animal Hospital on any given day and you can feel it immediately, that easy, familiar energy that comes from a place that has been part of the community for nearly fifty years. Since 1975, the clinic has been caring for Franklin’s pets and the people who love them, long before the town became the busy, fast-growing place it is today. Their history is something the team is genuinely proud of. Not because it sounds impressive on paper, but because it has shaped who they are, a group of neighbors showing up for neighbors. Over the years, WCAH has cared for multiple generations of families, and that continuity is what keeps many clients coming back. People often say the clinic feels more like a family living room than a medical office, where conversations flow easily and pets are greeted like old friends. In a county filled with new developments and new residents arriving by the day, the comfort of a familiar, locally owned practice hits a little differently. Few people reflect that spirit better than Dr. James Reynolds. A true Franklin kid, he grew up inside the clinic. One of his earliest memories is watching the work around him, absorbing the pace, the personalities, and the small routines that make a veterinary hospital run. From there, he became an assistant, then a college student learning the ropes, and now a veterinarian standing in the same exam rooms he once swept as a teenager.

and cool opportunity to step in and provide care for families that have been coming to WCAH for so long.”

His favorite part of the job is simple. “Working with my family, and with coworkers who have become family over the years,” he says. And he means it. For him, the true joy of the work is getting to care for people he has known since childhood, sometimes caring for a pet while swapping stories about how the client remembers him running around the clinic years ago. “It has been a unique and cool opportunity to step in and provide care for families that have been coming to WCAH for so long,” he says. The fun extends beyond the exam rooms, too. WCAH stays connected to the community in small but meaningful ways. They donate to local events throughout the year, and every now and then, they post educational videos on Facebook, the kind that answer everyday questions like, “Why is my dog doing that weird thing?” or “Is this normal, or should I panic?” These videos are friendly and easy to understand, usually delivered with the same warm tone you’d hear if you called the clinic with a question. When it comes to medical care, the team focuses on preventive wellness, the kind of everyday maintenance that keeps pets healthy long before a problem shows up. Yearly exams, detailed health histories, and routine wellness bloodwork form the core of their approach. Nothing fancy, just consistent attention to the things that matter most. Whether they are addressing a minor concern, talking about nutrition, or preparing for a surgery, the staff takes time to ask questions and make sure owners feel informed. They like conversations, not checklists. What makes WCAH feel different is not a single policy or program, but the overall atmosphere. Even as Franklin expands and the client base grows, the clinic has held onto the same approachable,

relationship-driven style it always had. Pets tug their owners in excitedly, staff members greet families by name, and it is common to hear laughter coming from a back hallway. It is the kind of place where history shows up in small ways, like a client telling the team they remember when Dr. James was “this tall,” while holding their hand at knee level. Through all the growth and change surrounding it, Williamson County Animal Hospital remains one of the constants in Franklin, a place rooted in relationships, familiar faces, and a shared love of the animals that bring so much joy into people’s lives. It is not flashy, it is not corporate, it is simply part of the community, carrying forward nearly fifty years of care with the same warmth and friendliness that shaped it from the start. WCAH.org

REWIND MEDICAL SOLUTIONS THOUGHTFUL APPROACH TO WELLNESS

THE LUXURY

of Renewal

112 LOCA L’S CH OICE | HEALT H + WE LLN E SS

The approach seems to resonate with the area’s residents, many of whom look for care that is both knowledgeable and thoughtful. As Long puts it, “People want providers who are educated, intentional, and invested in long term outcomes. They don’t want to choose between beauty and wellness, and we don’t think they should have to.”

CARE THAT FITS A BUSY LIFE

In a community that values balance, refinement, and intentional living, many people in Williamson County are seeking more than routine self care, they are looking for meaningful renewal. For Rita Long, owner of ReWind Medical Solutions, the work her team does isn’t about chasing perfection, it’s about helping people return to themselves in a deeper, steadier way. “At ReWind, we define the luxury of renewal as the privilege of feeling like the most restored, confident version of yourself, not just temporarily but continuously,” Long says. “Renewal isn’t a moment, it’s a lifestyle.” That guiding idea has shaped the practice into something that blends aesthetics, wellness support, and age management under one roof, with an emphasis on long term wellbeing rather than quick fixes.

ReWind’s clients often arrive juggling career responsibilities, family commitments, or active retirements. Long says that reality led her team to design plans that work with a person’s life rather than adding pressure to it. “We design treatment plans that support real life, not complicate it,” she says. “Self care shouldn’t feel like another task. It should feel like an upgrade to everyday living.” That might look like simple, sustainable skincare routines, quarterly maintenance treatments, or wellness therapies that help with energy, sleep, or stress. The goal, she says, is always the same, to help people feel better without overwhelming them. Although ReWind offers medically grounded treatments, the atmosphere remains calm and unhurried. Long believes that science and serenity can, and should, coexist. “Our treatments are rooted in medical precision, but the experience feels like an exhale,” she says. The environment is intentionally quiet, warm, and designed to help the nervous system relax, a contrast to the pace outside its doors. CONTINUED >

A TEAM WITH RANGE

Long describes her team as a mix of experienced medical providers and skilled aestheticians who collaborate closely. “Our structure allows us to treat the full spectrum of beauty and wellness,” she explains. Medical professionals focus on hormones, metabolism, peptides, and injectables, while aestheticians lead skin correction and long term maintenance. This combination, she says, means they are able to look at each client as a whole rather than through a single lens. “We don’t guess,” Long says. “We assess, analyze, and customize.” Long sees a shift toward preventative wellness, particularly among clients looking for long term vitality. “We believe prevention is the most powerful form of anti-aging,” she says. Rather than emphasizing damage control, ReWind educates clients about collagen preservation, hormones, and healthy skin habits. Peptide and stem cell therapies support this philosophy, working at the cellular level to improve recovery, energy, and resilience. For Long, these tools aren’t about trends, they’re about building a strong internal foundation that influences everything else.

WELLNESS THAT MOVES WITH PEOPLE

For those who live active, ambitious lives, Long says flexibility matters just as much as results. Programs are adjusted to match schedules, energy levels, and lifestyle needs. “Our patients don’t slow down and their wellness shouldn’t either,” she says.

Whether it’s hormone therapy, IV treatments, or body contouring, the goal is to support the life someone already leads, not require them to rearrange it. One unexpected offering at ReWind is allergy testing and treatment, something Long incorporated because of the ripple effects allergies can have. “Allergies influence skin health, inflammation, fatigue, and overall quality of life,” she says. By addressing these underlying triggers, she believes clients often experience improvements that go far beyond aesthetics. “Beauty improves when the body functions well,” she adds. “It completes the circle.” Though ReWind’s work involves visible changes, Long says the internal ones are the most meaningful. “We watch people soften, brighten, and stand taller,” she says. When clients make time for themselves, she sees them rediscover confidence and joy they may have set aside for years. “Beauty treatments may enhance the exterior, but the true transformation is internal,” she says. “It’s not vanity, it’s vitality.” To Long, ReWind reflects the qualities she sees throughout Franklin and Williamson County, a commitment to learning, a desire for quality, and a steady pursuit of growth. She describes the practice simply, a place rooted in professionalism and care, but also warmth and humanity. “Our clients lead boldly,” Long says. “We simply help them look and feel just as strong as they are.” RewindMedicalSolutions.com

We’ve all had days when a cozy bowl of something comforting seems to turn everything around or when a sugary snack makes us feel great for ten minutes and then completely drained. While we often think of food in terms of calories or flavor, emerging research confirms something most of us have known intuitively: what we eat can dramatically influence how we feel. “Food and mood are deeply connected,” says nutritional psychiatrist Dr. Uma Naidoo, whose work highlights how the brain relies on key vitamins, fats, minerals, and amino acids to produce mood-regulating neurotransmitters. Serotonin, dopamine, and even our stress-response hormones are built from nutrients we consume. The good news? With a little intention, our daily meals and snacks can become simple, delicious tools for boosting emotional resilience, motivation, and an overall feeling of wellbeing. So what makes a food “mood-boosting”? Several categories play key roles:

118 C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

• Omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods like salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds, support brain function and reduce inflammation linked to depression and anxiety. • Complex carbohydrates, such as oats, sweet potatoes, and quinoa, help stabilize blood sugar and allow serotonin production to run smoothly • Antioxidants, found in leafy greens, berries, and colorful vegetables, combat oxidative stress— one of the body’s hidden drains on mental clarity and energy. • Probiotics and fermented foods, like yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha, nourish the gut microbiome, which produces over 90% of the body’s serotonin. • Magnesium-rich foods, including bananas, legumes, and pumpkin seeds, help relax muscles and regulate the stress response. • Dark chocolate (in moderation), rich in flavonoids and mood-enhancing compounds, provides a measurable lift in positivity.

Mood food isn’t a diet but an approach to eating that recognizes the powerful relationship between our plates and our emotional well-being. We can still enjoy comfort foods, indulgences, and favorites, but by including more omega-3s, fiber-rich vegetables, probiotics, and antioxidant-packed ingredients, we’re giving our bodies the building blocks for resilience and joy. Whether you’re digging into a creamy golden soup, grabbing a chocolate energy bite between meetings, or starting the day with a mood-steadying breakfast, every nourishing meal is a small act of self-care. With the right ingredients, meals become more than just fuel. They turn into emotional nourishment. And incorporating these foods doesn’t require complicated shopping lists or restaurant-level cooking. Here are four easy, uplifting recipes designed to boost mood, sustain energy, and satisfy the soul.

Life Reimagined

Real Patients, Real Transformations at Ankle and Foot Centers (AFC) of Tennessee ARTICLE BY KIMMIE MORRISON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MEGAN HILL

126 G E T ACT IV E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

For many people in Williamson County, life changes not in a dramatic moment, but in the small steps they can no longer take. At Ankle and Foot Centers (AFC) of Tennessee, those steps are often where the healing begins. Dr. Jeffery Mitchell and Dr. Jamil Hossain have built a practice that blends advanced technology with a deeply personal approach to care. Patients range from infants and children, to athletes, grandparents and busy professionals who often arrive only after months or years of ignoring a problem. “A lot of the Franklin/ Williamson residents are parents of young children, who use us for foot and ankle pathology. We create a friendly and comfortable environment for both kids and parents to be treated for simple things… from warts to complicated ongoing problems like grown pains.” What they find at AFC Tennessee is a team that treats far more than a foot or ankle. They treat the whole person. “Whether it’s a lingering foot problem or an unresolved issue, many patients come to us because they haven’t been able to find answers elsewhere,” the doctors shared. Some arrive with symptoms that others have misunderstood or missed. “There have been instances where patients arrived with pain or symptoms that were misdiagnosed simply because their presentation didn’t fit the typical pattern.” Their work often begins with listening, not operating. Simple conditions are easy to spot. The challenge lies in the cases that require time, clarity and instinct. “Treating a straightforward sprain is easy but what we truly specialize in is diagnosing and treating

the out of the box cases where others have struggled,” they said. “In many of these situations, truly listening to the patient’s story and following every detail feels like detective work, piecing together clues to uncover the real problem.” When answers lead to healing, the result is shared progress. “The best part is working collaboratively with patients to find a solution. And when they ultimately become pain free, it’s a meaningful accomplishment for them, for us, and for our entire staff.” One of the most powerful transformations they see is in active retirees who worry their days of golf, hiking or traveling may be behind them. The practice has become known for minimally invasive surgery that shortens recovery time and reduces patient risk. “We’ve had many cases in which patients came to us with chronic problems that severely limited their mobility,” the doctors said, describing individuals whose wounds or deformities made even basic movement difficult. “In these situations, offering minimally invasive surgery became a life changing option.” For many people, recovery time dropped by more than half, giving them their freedom back. The success stems from a willingness to rethink what is possible. “The instruments used in minimally invasive surgery are designed for specific procedures, but by keeping their capabilities in mind and reimagining how we approach different pathologies, we’ve been able to achieve remarkable outcomes,” they said. “This innovative mindset has brought significant success to many of our patients’ lives.” Some cases require more than advanced tools. They require trust. One patient, a caregiver for older adults, had lived for years with worsening ankle pain that left her nearly unable to walk. She had seen multiple specialists but had never received a clear diagnosis. “By the time she reached our office, her deformity had progressed so far that even walking had become nearly impossible,” the doctors recalled. She feared surgery would end her ability to work.

127

The first step was understanding her condition correctly. “It was clear she needed surgery, but the most important step was arriving at the correct diagnosis,” they said. With a clear plan and her family included in every discussion, she agreed to move forward. “Not only were we able to correct the deformity and relieve her pain, but she ultimately returned to work and resumed the life she thought she had lost.” Technology is only one part of the equation. AFC Tennessee takes pride in designing treatment plans that fit the real world demands of the community they serve. “Many of our patients in the Franklin and Williamson areas are hardworking professionals who lead fast-paced lives and spend long hours on their feet,” the doctors said. To support this, the practice has many non-operative options including custom orthotics, laser therapy, and amniotic injections. If surgery is needed, advanced surgical techniques offered at the practice reduce both operating time and recovery. But the plan is never simply clinical. “We don’t just treat the foot and ankle, we treat the whole person,” they explained. They consider lifestyle, activity level, family plans and long-term goals. “Our patients feel comfortable enough to talk to us, and we give them the opportunity to be heard.” A key part of that is their staff, who the doctors describe as the heart of their environment. “Our incredible staff not only make patients feel welcome but also go the extra mile to ensure every need is met.” Rehabilitation is where many patients experience their first glimpse of a new life. “Rehabilitation after surgery is essential, and nearly all of our patients receive detailed guidance throughout the process,” they said. Education is central because a knowledgeable patient becomes an empowered one. Strong relationships with physical and occupational therapists ensure that each person receives continuous, high-quality support from the first step to the last. Sometimes the hardest part for a patient is simply deciding to seek care. “Our message is this: don’t wait,” the doctors emphasized. Foot and ankle pain rarely improves without attention because the body depends on the feet all day. “Think of it this way: your feet carry you through your entire life. Getting ahead of a problem before it grows can mean the difference between a quick fix and a long, difficult recovery.”

128 G E T ACT IV E | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS

Ultimately, restoring movement transforms more than the body. “The results we see are remarkable,” they said. Patients often gain renewed confidence, energy and momentum. They travel again, take on hobbies they missed and live with a freedom they thought was gone. For Dr. Hossain and Dr. Mitchell, AFC Tennessee is about more than treating symptoms. It is about building something lasting. “Our vision is simple but profound: to remain in this community, do good work, and build a sustainable practice grounded in honesty, integrity, and trust,” they said. “We are proud of what we created. It was not easy getting here, but we sure are glad that we are here.” And for the patients whose lives have been restored one step at a time, the feeling is mutual.
