Maria Dinoia | maria.dinoia@citylifestyle.com
Happy New Year, friends! I hope you all had a magical holiday season, basking in the love of family and friends, and making lots of lasting memories. After all that merriment, January seems so dull in comparison, right? The dreary, cold weather, no time off from school or work, no parties, no nothing. But our January wellness issue is a shining light in all of that dullness! For starters, the legendary Brooke Shields graces our cover. She'll be keynote speaker at the Nashville Antiques & Garden Show later this month and will be talking all about her passion for home renovation and design. The majority of this issue is dedicated to wellness - from mental health to tranquil escapes, from relaxation therapy to happy feet, from staying active in winter to keeping your pets healthy, we leave no stone unturned in the wellness category. All of that and more will shine-up January's dullness! May you enjoy a beautiful and prosperous 2025. Yours in wellness,

For many people, the beginning of January often includes planning and making goals for the year ahead and many times those goals include prioritizing health and wellness. While it’s crucial to take care of yourself, it’s also important to take care of your furry friends. When it comes to making sure your pet is healthy, it’s key to have a veterinarian that you trust. But when scheduling vet appointments becomes another thing on the to-do-list, or when your pet is sick and needs immediate care, sometimes getting an appointment becomes a challenge. That’s why Williamson County Animal Hospital has a unique model, operating as a walk-in hospital to bring convenience and prompt care to your pets whether they are sick or injured or if it’s just their annual checkup. Since 1975, the team at Williamson County Animal Hospital has helped care for the pets of the area. They know that pets are like members of the family and when they are sick or injured immediate care is important. They even offer urgent care and service after normal office hours throughout the week. This past fall, the team of over 20 employees expanded as Dr. Courtney Beasley joined the practice, bringing her knowledge and love of animals to the hospital. A native of Parsons in West Tennessee, Dr. Beasley earned her undergraduate degree from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville where she majored in animal science with a minor in biological science before completing veterinary school at Auburn University. She says the practice’s positive work environment and Christian-based morals and values drew her to Williamson County Animal Hospital, as well as it being a privately owned practice. She is currently in her third year as a veterinarian but has known since she was a child that being a vet is what she was meant to do. “I just knew in kindergarten it’s what I wanted to do,” she remembers. “I would say even more so around sixth grade because I had my own personal pet get sick and kind of having that helpless feeling. I didn't want to ever really feel that again.” Growing up, Dr. Beasley had a lot of animals in her home and her family pets went far beyond your typical dogs and cats. She had those as well as horses, chickens, rabbits, fish, and lizards. Having such an array of pets has benefitted her profession as she cares for a variety of animals including dogs, cats, exotic animals, reptiles, small mammals, and birds. “I have seen and treated wildlife in the past, as well. So I'll see them here, too, in the future,” she says, as she works with Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency on that process. When it comes to making sure your pets stay in the best of health, Dr. Beasley highly encourages they get a vet checkup every year. “For just a general healthy animal, your yearly visits are usually sufficient. But if you’ve got a geriatric, ‘senior’ in animals is usually seven and up for a dog or a cat— younger in your big breeds—if they've got issues or for monitoring things usually they should see a vet every six months. If they have more serious issues, then that's kind of case-by-case, but I would say for your older ones, six months to a year depending on how they’re doing and what’s going on.” Additionally, Dr. Beasley says one of the best wellness treatments that you can do for your pets is a simple practice that can be done at home: brushing their teeth every day. “Brushing their

“Brushing their teeth is the gold standard in preventing plaque buildup.”
teeth, that is the gold standard in preventing plaque buildup,” she says. “The teeth are one of the big, big issues with small and large breed and can lead to a lot of other health issues too. Consider having some type of dental regimen whether it be with a certified chew or water additive. But brushing the teeth actually gets in there and knocks all of the buildup off.” She encourages brushing teeth daily for dogs, cats, and even Bearded Dragons, which can be done with a cotton swab. Another wellness marker that she encourages tracking is your pet’s weight. “Keeping an eye on the weight and knowing what a healthy weight is for that specific breed is important,” says Dr. Beasley. When she’s not busy looking after the animals of Williamson County, Dr. Beasley is hanging out with her own crew of pets which include her 11-year-old boxer, three cats, and a snake. With such a busy work environment, she enjoys relaxing hobbies like reading and painting but also is big into photography—primarily wildlife and landscape—as well as traveling and snowboarding. “I do a lot of traveling and hiking [and] camping. I just got back from Iceland in October, so I was there for two weeks. We were in a camper van around the island,” she says of the trip where she got to witness the Northern Lights. Williamson County Animal Hospital was voted as The Sizzle Awards’ “Best Animal Practice” in 2024, which recognizes the best businesses in Williamson County. WCAH.org

Planting the seed for future inspiration is the 2025 Antiques & Garden Show in Nashville. An annual benefit for Cheekwood Estate & Gardens and Economic Club of Nashville (ECON) Charities, the show, now in its 35th year, features a delightful lineup of lectures and exhibits including some of the industry's best and brightest in horticultural design, interiors, antiques, and landscaped gardens from across the country. Founded in 1990 as a way to give back to the Nashville community, the Antiques & Garden show remains committed to supporting the local community, and in the last 34 years has given $11 million back to these incredible organizations. A highlight of the weekend is the lecture series keynote, "Cultivating the Character of Home," moderated by India Hicks with Brooke Shields and her longtime collaborator and friend, British designer David Flint Wood. Shields recently unveiled her latest entrepreneurial project, Commence, a digital platform that inspires women over 40 to live their best lives. Shields' next book, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old will be released later this month. CONTINUED >

Show general co-chairs, Paige Hill and Dawn Looney, consider the annual show to be the gold standard of all things home and garden and an enchanting antidote to the winter blues. Hill and Looney agreed from the very start on what they wanted the look and feel of the show to be, and they say how fun it’s been to watch the brilliantly talented creative teams who surround them bring this vision to life. From the unique antiques and beauty and creativity of the gardens, to the inspiring and educational lectures and the relationships they are building along the way, Hill and Looney agree the Antique & Garden Show truly delights and fills their souls in a way few things can. Many factors go into making such an expansive show come together and this year's honorary co-chairs, Bunny Williams and Elizabeth Lawrence are pleased to share some of the behind-the-scenes magic. Considered one of the most talented names in design, Williams is an accomplished businesswoman and philanthropist known for balancing refined beauty, welcoming livable appeal and attention to detail. One of Architectural Digest’s AD100 Hall of Fame members, Williams lands routinely on various best-of lists, including ELLE DECOR’s A-List and Luxe’s Gold List, and has won numerous awards including the New York School of Interior Design’s Albert Hadley Lifetime Achievement Award, the Living Landmarks Award from the New York Landmarks Conservancy, a Kips Bay’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art’s Arthur Ross Award. Honorary co-chair Lawrence has spent her career working alongside Williams, designing projects across the country, from Manhattan to Palm Beach to Los Angeles. Since being named Williams' only partner in 2017, their firm, Williams Lawrence, has built a legacy of superior design. Recently, City Lifestyle was invited to chat with Lawrence about plans for the show. CONTINUED >

AS THIS PRESTIGIOUS EVENT APPROACHES WHAT HAS YOU THE MOST EXCITED?
I always look forward to opening night. It’s just amazing to see everyone and explore the dealers’ offerings. It is a festive occasion, and you get to see how the committee has raised the bar yet again on the décor and the event.
CAN YOU SHARE WHAT INSPIRES YOU AS CO-CHAIR? IS THERE ONE LECTURE OR EVENT YOU FEEL IS A MUST SEE IF YOU ARE AN UP-AND-COMING DESIGNER, LANDSCAPER OR ARCHITECT?
The event is so beautifully planned each year and it is inspiring to see everyone come together to raise money for the community. There are so many amazing lectures and events. I’ve always been a fan of the work of designers Veere Grenney and Rita

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GARDEN STYLE AND WHY DO YOU LEAN TOWARDS THIS CHOICE? OF COURSE, PERSONAL STYLE DOES NOT MATCH WITH A CLIENT'S NEEDS. HOW DOES YOUR FIRM APPROACH NEW CLIENT PROJECTS AS CREATIVELY AS POSSIBLE?
I love English gardens for their combination of formality and comfort and the unrestricted feeling you have strolling through them. When it comes to projects, listen first. Always start by listening to what your clients want, then you can guide them with your expertise and knowledge.

DO YOU HATE YOUR CPAP? YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder affecting close to 30 million people in the US. It is characterized by interruptions in breathing during sleep, leading ProSomnus EVO to poor-quality sleep, daytime sleepiness and serious health consequences. Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy has long been considered the gold standard treatment for sleep apnea. While CPAP has proven effective for many individuals, some people simply cannot tolerate the masks and hoses required. If you or a loved one have sleep apnea and find yourself hating your CPAP, don’t despair. There is an alternative treatment that can help you manage your condition and achieve a restful night’s sleep….one that an experienced airway dentist can provide! Oral appliances, also known as mandibular advancement devices or mandibular splints, are an effective alternative for mild to moderate sleep apnea. These custom-fit devices are worn in the mouth during sleep, repositioning the jaw and tongue to keep the airway open. Oral appliances are comfortable, portable, and easy to use, making them a popular choice for those who can’t tolerate a CPAP machine. However, it’s important to consult with a specialized sleep and airway dentist, experienced in sleep apnea treatment, to ensure proper custom fitting and effectiveness. Often, these appliances are covered by medical insurance. In 1988, the Wisconsin Sleep Cohort Study began following patients with sleep apnea over the course of 18 years. We now have critical insights into the health impacts of sleep apnea (OSA). The study involved a sample of over 1,500 sleep apnea patients, monitored every four years with overnight sleep studies and comprehensive assessments. Key findings of the study include that those with untreated sleep apnea had a 3-5 times increased risk of death from heart disease. Conversely, those treated with therapy had significantly better survival outcomes. Sleep apnea was found to be strongly associated with hypertension, elevated blood pressure, and unhealthy nighttime blood pressure patterns. Participants with moderate to severe apnea were at increased risk of stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. The study also linked sleep apnea to depression and cognitive decline, emphasizing the broad impact of untreated SDB on health beyond cardiovascular risks. Currently, we know that untreated sleep apnea is highly prevalent in the population, and its frequency is expected to rise due to increasing obesity rates and an aging population. This underscores the importance of early detection and treatment of sleep apnea to mitigate its severe health consequences and improve long-term outcomes. Now, advances in Oral Appliance Therapy (seen above) can provide treatment of sleep apnea that sometimes exceeds the outcome of CPAP, especially because of improved compliance. And in 2015, the AASM revised its guidelines to reflect acceptance of an oral appliance as the first way to treat mild to moderate sleep apnea, instead of CPAP in every case. So, contact an experienced sleep apnea dentist to help you navigate your options for treatment for this serious condition. Do it for yourself and your family, and live your best life.

PROACTIVE MEDICINE TAILOR-MADE FOR YOU The team at Paradigm Health includes Cait Carnahan, Sarah Bolz, Dr. Matt McEvoy, Dr. David Edwards, Griffin Moore and Naomi Donalson
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER BENNHOFF | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED What if, instead of going to the doctor seeking treatment for a disease, you identified precursors of disease before they developed and were guided to prevent the disease from occurring altogether? This is the new paradigm of medical practice, known as “Medicine 3.0,” offered by Dr. Matt McEvoy and Dr. David Edwards at Paradigm Health, a new practice on Duke Drive in Franklin. “If you think about modern medicine being 2.0, and before that was 1.0 when we didn’t have antibiotics, insulin, or even clean water, Medicine 3.0 is a shift," says McEvoy. "Instead of waiting for something to develop and then trying to treat it, we catch the signs of diseases early and take a proactive approach to prevent them.” “If you feel healthy, why should you care about this now?," McEvoy continues. "15 percent of Americans have chronic kidney disease, 30 percent have fatty liver disease, a third have heart disease, 88 percent are metabolically unhealthy and 75-80 percent are unaware of these issues until they have symptoms. Instead of seeing a doctor for only 10 minutes and not learning of these issues until they’re serious, we take the time that is needed to be thorough.”

“The current story of aging and disease in America does not need to be your story.”

The doctors are also believers in the achievements of modern medicine (Medicine 2.0). “My youngest daughter had stage IV lymphoma when she was four,” says McEvoy. “I’m thankful for chemotherapy and for the doctors who discovered the best treatment.” A native Canadian, Edwards earned his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Maryland and did specialty training at the University of Florida and the Harvard/Massachusetts General Hospital system. McEvoy also attended Harvard University, where he played center on the football team, before completing medical school and residency at the Medical University of South Carolina. At Vanderbilt, as Division Chief, Edwards developed multidisciplinary pain clinics where he cared for all aspects of a patient’s health.
Similarly at Vanderbilt, as Vice-Chair, McEvoy built a medical optimization clinic for patients preparing to undergo major surgery. “Our clinic evaluated every organ system, nutrition, psychological preparation, physical fitness, and more," he says. "We were a one-stop-shop for our patients, leveraging colleagues in cardiology, hematology, and pulmonology, to name a few." But McEvoy's and Edwards' vision was broader; they wanted to practice Medicine 3.0. As an example of expanding the scope of their clinic, they achieved board certification in obesity medicine. “Many patients coming for surgery had diseases that resulted in excess weight that caused chronic pain,” explains Edwards. “I found myself treating the origin of the disease and their other conditions, and they would feel better, their blood glucose and blood pressure would normalize, they would even be more active, and weight would come off. In the end many didn’t need surgery or pain medicine.” “The reason we left such great opportunities at Vanderbilt to start Paradigm Health,” says McEvoy, “is because patients needed more help but the current health system isn’t set up to allow for that.” The doctors refer to themselves as “trail guides,” helping patients chart an individual course, make lifestyle changes and address root causes of disease. So why don’t all doctors focus on proactive Medicine 3.0? “Well, the current system is really one of sick care rather than promoting health," says McEvoy. "From medical school to residency training, there is very little education in this CONTINUED >

comprehensive approach. No training on personalizing nutrition plans and no training on evidence-based exercise prescriptions or how to advise on supplements before reaching for prescriptions." "We like to ask our patients what they want to be enjoying when they are 90 years old and then talk about what needs to be done now to help them achieve those goals,” says Edwards. “The evidence shows that if we focus on optimizing metabolic, musculoskeletal, and aerobic health, and assess for leading causes of death and combat those, we extend healthspan (living longer healthier). The current story of aging and disease in America does not need to be your story.” Both doctors plan to cap their patient load at about 200 members, whereas a typical primary care physician has 1,500 to 4,500 patients. Members of Paradigm Health contact the doctors anytime via HIPAA-compliant email or even text. The clinic feels more like a comfortable home with welcoming, coordinated furnishings, rugs and artwork. A gym and kitchen exist alongside private rooms for conferring with staff. Members don’t wait in sterile rooms wearing paper gowns. Typically, members sit with doctors discussing their health history in a comfortable office, on topics such as nutrition and exercise, hormone replacement, weight management, reducing heart and lung disease, and more. Members are encouraged to bring up ideas they read about. The doctors see health as an asset that belongs to the patient and one over which they should feel like they have control. A team, including practice nurse Sarah Bolz, physical therapist Griffin Moore, member experience coordinator Naomi Donalson and practice manager Cait Carnahan, assist members who, so far, range in age from 18 to 88. This includes coordinating with outside specialists, when needed. More staff, including female physicians, will soon join the practice. The initial workup includes extensive laboratory tests, most of which are not ordered with a typical annual physical, several imaging tests to look at heart health and body composition (DEXA scan with bone, muscle, and fat analysis). A cardiopulmonary exercise test is performed in the clinic to evaluate physical fitness and metabolism. Patients also spend extensive time with the physical therapist (who doubles as a strength and conditioning coach) to evaluate how every bone and joint moves in their body using the Dari Motion system. The initial in-clinic evaluation takes about four hours, with time at the end to discuss the results with the doctors. Each member receives a a very extensive personalized report that details their results in a helpful layout that acts as the backbone of ongoing planning with the team.

NOW OP E N | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
A cardiopulmonary exercise test for a member's heart, lungs and blood pressure being conducted while he exercises on a treadmill
In the end, the goal is optimizing health for the long run. “Patients often come to us and say things like, ‘I want to be able to travel when I’m in my 90s or, ‘I want to run around Disneyland with my grandchildren,’” says Edwards. “We craft personalized plans based on where they are now and with a long-range view in mind." “The evidence-based principles of disease prevention are applicable to everyone- exercise, nutrition, sleep, hygiene, cognitive and emotional wellness,” says McEvoy. "But the development and application of a health optimization plan is personalized for each member. What we do know is that wherever someone is in their health journey, we can meet them there.” “It’s akin to hiring a wealth manager to pay attention to your retirement portfolio even when you can’t,” says Edwards. “Invest early in your health so that it pays dividends in healthspan down the road. If we’re not healthy and in our best shape, nothing else is worth much because we can’t enjoy it.” To learn more about Paradigm Health and its membership plans, visit ParadigmHealth.org or email team@paradigmhealth.org

931 Beauty Co. Where Beauty Meets Mental Health 64

ARTICLE BY JESSICA WAYMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Hair loss is a significant concern that affects millions, transcending age and gender. Beyond its physical effects, this condition can profoundly impact one’s self-esteem and mental health. For many, experiencing hair loss can lead to feelings of anxiety, embarrassment, and decreased body image. Understanding the intricate relationship between hair loss, beauty standards, and mental well-being is crucial. Owner Jessie Mobley and her team at 931 Beauty Co. understand it very well. When Mobley’s mother died unexpectedly at the beginning of the pandemic, she faced emotional challenges that deeply impacted not just her mental health, but her physical health as well. Mobley experienced hair loss while grieving the loss of her mother, and after noticing that others were experiencing pandemic-related hair loss, she decided to take a deeper look into the science beneath hair loss and mental and physical health. “It’s all connected,” says Mobley. “Cosmetology, hair loss, and health in general.”
The 931 Beauty Brand is embracing that knowledge with a major makeover to kick off the year ahead. “A couple of years ago, we decided to expand more into health and wellness,” says Mobley. “Now we’re about to open up to offer more of an all-encompassing wellness lounge.” Mobley and others discuss these topics on her podcast, The Hairapist. She and friends offer heartfelt conversations and insight into the world of beauty, self-confidence, and mental health. After a year of construction, 931 Beauty Co. is redefining the salon experience into one of overall beauty and wellness, inside and out. Their upgrades will include two new head spa tables where clients can enjoy transformative scalp treatments that soothe, detoxify, and rejuvenate. The infrared saunas promote deep relaxation, aid in detoxification, and support overall wellness. Alongside these new features are soaking cedar tubs offering a tranquil space to unwind. “That’s the connection that we’re trying to make, says Mobley. "Bridging the gap between mental health and beauty.” Televisions provide light entertainment while soft, luxurious robes offer comfort as you transition between experiences. The bar and lounge elevate the experience even further as drinks and lunch are included. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the patio will be perfect for unwinding, with drink in hand. With an understanding of the emotional journey that accompanies hair loss, treatments and wellness for others who suffer are at the heart of the business. For those experiencing hair loss due to medical conditions such as alopecia or chemotherapy, 931 Beauty Co. offers a life-changing solution all the way from its laboratories in Italy– CNC Hair System using 3D CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 5 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The salon still offers traditional services. From expertly crafted hair packages including styling, cuts, and color, to luxurious blowouts and seamless extensions, the 931 Beauty Co. stylists ensure every strand looks flawless. Beyond hair, they offer professional makeup services to enhance any occasion and precise waxing for smooth, radiant skin. “Naturally, when working with makeup, the skin comes into play, so we started suggesting Hydrafacials to our brides," says Mobley. "Eventually, we just bought the machine and hired aestheticians.” Hydrafacials rejuvenate the skin, leaving it glowing and refreshed. Diving deeper into the skin care side of beauty, the aestheticians of 931 Skin Co. specialize in delivering radiant, healthy skin with a range of expert services tailored to your needs. Their signature ZO Skin Health gently exfoliates and rejuvenates. Dermaplaning enhances smoothness and texture by removing dead skin, while tinting services add a polished look to brows and lashes. Topical chemical peels target specific concerns, from fine lines to uneven tone, while custom masks hydrate and soothe.

931 Beauty Co. is now the ultimate destination for celebrating life’s special moments in style. Perfect for bachelorette parties or anniversary celebrations, their luxurious packages create unforgettable memories. “If you examine online content trends, you really see people diving into self-care," says Mobley. "The idea really started therein bringing people together and creating beautiful moments while doing things that make you look and feel better in many ways.” The new space is a sanctuary where you can gather your bridal party or loved ones in an elegant setting designed for relaxation and fun. KELLUM Stem Cell Institute Tristan looks like any other 18-year-old senior in high school. He loves life. He has friends. He even has a part time job. What you can’t tell right away is that he has autism spectrum disorder. We have navigated through the world of autism by working to overcome its challenges. But even with specialized therapies he struggled to communicate and connect with those around him.
“We didn’t know what to expect. But we knew that if stem cell therapy could help him we had to try.
”
When we heard about Kellum Stem Cell Institute offering
stem cell therapy to people with autism we knew we had to check it out! Dr. Kellum was so kind to Tristan and we could tell he genuinely cared about him and his future. It’s been a year since his first infusion and we are thrilled with the gains we have seen. He’s able to communicate better, his eye contact has drastically improved, and he’s even able to hold a conversation with us. The sweetest part is seeing him connect with us and his friends on a deeper level.
We will forever be grateful for the impact stem cell therapy has had on our son!

“I CREATED CALMA FOR THE AMAZING WOMEN WHO FIND IT DIFFICULT TO GIVE THEMSELVES THE CARE THEY SO WILLINGLY GIVE TO OTHERS.”
WHAT IS CALMA RELAXATION THERAPY?
It’s an extremely restful blend of massage and guided meditation layered with holistic relaxation techniques. While Swedish massage relieves knots and tension in the physical body, energy work helps ease stress and anxiety in the emotional and spiritual body, promoting balance and well-being.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE CALMA RELAXATION THERAPY?
I’ve always been fascinated by the ancient roots and modern discoveries of holistic healing. I study acupressure, yoga, meditation, and the therapeutic attributes of sound because I believe in the power of these gentle therapies to calm the body, mind, and spirit. I find combining energy work with massage and other modalities invites profound, transformative calm. My clients love the results, and that’s how Calma Relaxation Therapy was born.
WHY CREATE A PRACTICE FOR WOMEN?
I know what it’s like to be a working woman—mom, wife, caretaker, juggling a career —too busy to take time for yourself. My mother used to say, “You can’t pour from an empty pot,” and I believe that. Calma is for the amazing women who find it difficult to give themselves the care they so willingly give to others. It’s a practice of understanding and compassion, encouraging women to step away from the noise of daily life and find a moment of tranquility to recharge and refill their pot.
HOW DOES A CALMA RELAXATION THERAPY SESSION DIFFER FROM A TYPICAL MASSAGE?
I offer three main experiences tailored to each client’s needs: Rest and Restore: A deeply nourishing session combining guided meditation and Reiki to encourage stillness and balance. Integrative Massage: Swedish massage infused with energy work to relieve both physical and emotional tension. Reset: A shorter Reiki and acupressure session for those needing to refocus during a hectic day. CONTINUED >

The beauty is the ability to customize each session to your unique needs and preferences. You might add aromatherapy or breath work to your integrative massage or a soothing scalp massage during your rest and restore session. While the basics remain the same, each session is as unique as you are. Ultimately, this is your relaxation journey, and I’m here as a guide.
Heather Sabellico, LMT CALMA RELAXATION THERAPY Heather Sabellico is a Licensed Massage Therapist and Certified Reiki Practitioner. Calma Relaxation Therapy is a mind-body practice designed to help women achieve a more centered and peaceful life through self-care.

WHY IS RELAXATION SO IMPORTANT?
When you’re not looking, stress and anxiety can take a serious toll on your health. I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know—you’ve read it and you’ve listened to the podcasts. But what are you doing about it? I provide the time and space for you to act on what you know to be true: you need moments to quiet the mind, look within, and reset your inner compass. The world isn’t slowing down. We’re only running faster trying to keep up, so it makes sense to incorporate relaxation as a necessary component of mental and physical wellness.
WHAT IS REIKI?
There are lots of misconceptions about Reiki, so it’s important to clarify: Reiki is not a religion. It’s a therapeutic practice developed in Japan in the 1920s and is used in major medical institutions like the Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital to support relaxation, recovery, and pain management. Simply put, Reiki is based on the idea that a universal life energy flows through all living things. When this energy is blocked or disrupted, it can lead to imbalance. Trained practitioners channel positive energy by placing their hands on or above the body to address these imbalances. It’s a powerful complement to my practice.
WHY NOW?
Calma Relaxation Therapy helps people. They feel better, and lighter in heart and mind. I want to share that. This work is more than a career for me; it’s a calling. While I can’t fix big world problems, I can do small things to create a flow of kindness. I hope to inspire others to embrace being kind to themselves and others. Kindness multiplies and grows and I feel the world could always use a little extra. Why not now? CalmaRelaxationTherapy.com

THE LOCAL DUO ARE EMPOWERING WOMEN THROUGH COMEDY ARTICLE BY KELLIE WALTON | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

It all started with a Lamaze class. Chloe Walton and Sweden Perkins, two soonto-be moms, found themselves giggling at awkward videos as they prepped for the arrival of their first daughters. “We were both pregnant with our first babies, both girls, and both due within a week of each other. We totally hit it off,” Chloe recalls. “Then from there, we swapped contacts and kept in touch. Our daughters were born about ten days apart.” Their connection, and shared passion for baby fashion, quickly blossomed into a business idea. “We wanted to start our own bow business because we couldn’t find any that we loved,” says Sweden. The pair launched Little Mint Julep, an Etsy bow shop that grew in popularity and even landed them in a few local boutiques. But as their little girls grew up, they knew it was time to wrap up the business and pursue their individual passions: Sweden would become Mrs. Tennessee, launch a podcast, and pursue content creation, and Chloe would start her own nutrition coaching business. A podcast episode with Chloe as Sweden’s guest reignited their creative partnership. “We had so much fun on that episode,” Chloe says. “Sweden called me and asked, ‘Would you want to just start a podcast together?’” They began recording in closets and at kitchen tables whenever their busy schedules would allow, amassing a small community of like-minded women who connected with their empowering (if not slightly chaotic) style. They navigated parenting, mental health journeys, and even a cancer scare together, in real time, always with an air of camaraderie and a touch of humor. All the while, they were showing women it was OK to embrace life wherever you may be, and that you don’t need to have it together all the time. CONTINUED >

Podcasting forayed into social media, where they created videos offering a behind-the-scenes look at their lives and these themes. That struck a chord. Their viral content—including a series of videos about friendship and mental health —has amassed more than 166 million views. On the cusp of something great, they were ready to take things to the next level, and this month, they’re unveiling their exciting rebrand. “Our goal is to create a supportive and empowering community of women,” Sweden shares. “We’re embracing being a little unhinged, a little chaotic, and completely unashamed of who we are.” This January, Nonchalant with Chloe and Sweden will officially debut. The refreshed podcast will take place exclusively in the car at different locations around Franklin – their favorite place to catch up, debrief, and share a little gossip. “It’s where girls sit before or after a night out, a workout session, or post-lunch—that’s where the real gossip happens,” Chloe says. “We’ll be talking about pop culture, health and wellness, therapy and advice, and featuring some guests.” “Don’t worry, we’re keeping 'Friends in the Trunk,'” Sweden adds with a laugh, nodding
to their former series inviting subject matter experts to pile into the trunk of their car. (As a 'Friends in the Trunk' guest myself, I can verify it’s a great time.) Nonchalant also introduces new features like audience interaction – listeners can send in their questions for a monthly segment called 'Drive Thru Therapy,' where Chloe and Sweden will offer their “nonchalant” advice based on personal experience. And as for their viral Instagram account? “The page will change to Chloe and Sweden, but expect the same quirky, chaotic content,” Chloe says. “We’re so excited about our photoshoot because we’ll be broadcasting our new colors and this concept that we are fully…” “...fully nonchalant,” Sweden finishes with a smile. Your neighbors -turned-inf luencers are creating a community that spans far beyond Franklin’s walls, all with a shared mission to lift each other up and laugh at yourself when you need to. As the rebrand unfolds this month, follow along on their Instagram page – @chloeandsweden – for exclusive merchandise drops, giveaways, and a continued confluence of real life and laughter.

MEET DR. ROB SMITH:
Franklin’s Thrill-Seeking Orthodontist 82
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | LO CAL SE RVICE S
ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
You may know Dr. Rob Smith as owner and orthodontist of Happy Harpeth Pediatric Dentistry + Orthodontics in Cool Springs, but what you may not know is that he has a love of adventure sports that’s taken him all over the world for once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Dr. Smith graduated from Harvard Dental School and began practicing in 2015. He initially owned two general dentistry practices in Ohio—where his wife Heidi’s family is from— but when he decided to move from general dentistry to practicing orthodonture, a residency opportunity at Vanderbilt eventually led the Smiths to relocate to Tennessee. After moving to Tennessee, he went on to build three startup practices from scratch—Greenwood Local Dentistry + Orthodontics in East Nashville and Smith Local and Happy Harpeth in Smyrna—because he wanted to be able to utilize
the best equipment, materials, and technology in the industry. Dr. Smith was approached in 2018 to see if he’d like to take over a practice in Franklin and jumped at the chance to add a fourth practice, purchasing what is now Happy Harpeth’s Cool Springs location. Happy Harpeth is unique in that it specializes in pediatric and youth orthodontic care, bringing topnotch care to Franklin with doctors who received their dental training from universities such as Yale and Columbia. “What’s unique about both of the Happy Harpeth offices is that we have specialist pediatric dentists who did three more years after dental school of hospital-based pediatric residency to be able to care for all children including autistic kids, severely disabled kids, the whole spectrum of dental disease among young at-risk children because of other things,” says Dr. Smith. His team also works to help with conditions like infant tongue tie. They even have a group of lactation consultants and myofunctional therapists that they work within their office. Working with both adults and kids, he also helps those who have issues with undisturbed sleep or snoring by opening their airways; this allows for more oxygen to get to the brain, which can bring better sleep, more energy, improved ability to pay attention, and overall enhanced health. While his experience in the dental world is clearly impressive, his life outside of his profession is equally remarkable. Describing himself as an “avid outdoor enthusiast,” Dr. Smith grew up playing typical childhood sports like baseball, basketball, football, and soccer. While he continued to play soccer throughout high school and college—he even plays to this day on a team in Williamson County—as an adult he dove headfirst into his love of extreme sports including heli-skiing, surfing, whitewater kayaking and rafting, and mountain biking. His love of the outdoors and adventure can even be seen in the décor across his offices, which feature surfboards in the waiting room, mountain murals, and more. Rather than simply going to a typical ski resort, he and his friends—whom he’s known since middle school— take a helicopter up into mountain ranges in places like Anchorage, Alaska to do ski runs. “It's one of the best feelings for me, being out there and just bombing powder and taking in the sights and being with friends, of course,” he shares. “But it's a whole investment of time, year-round, just to be in shape to go do it and that's why I play soccer and mountain bike here.” In addition to time in the snow, he and his friends also like to spend time on the water, but rather than leisurely floating on the lake in a boat, these adrenaline seekers opt for whitewater kayaking and rafting instead. Not only does he do extreme sports with his friends, Dr. Smith loves to do adventurous activities like surfing with his entire family in places like Costa Rica and Mexico. For the Smiths, family vacations have included getaways such as an epic, 12-day unguided rafting trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. At the time his oldest was 17-years-old and his youngest was 11-years-old, so being away without phone reception allowed for a special bonding time for their group of family and friends. Entry for this 320-mile paddling trip is extremely limited, so it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that they got to experience. The Smith family is a talented and athletic crew in a variety of ways. Dr. Smith’s wife, Heidi, has completed approximately 30 marathons, five Iron Man races, and an array of intense bike races. All five of their kids have been

involved in competitive rock climbing with two of his daughters being “the first girls from Tennessee to make it to U.S. Nationals Indoor Rock Climbing.” As his kids have grown and gone to college, many of them have opted to attend universities in places like Utah and Colorado to allow them to enjoy the outdoors and adventure sports. So next time you’re in for an appointment at Happy Harpeth, be sure to ask Dr. Smith what adventures he’s got planned next. HappyHarpethSmiles.com

ON THE MOVE (And Loving It!)
Alex Tran is a nomad at heart, but growing up in foster care limited her opportunities to travel. As an adult, she has embraced her desire to live in various cities in the United States, such as Nashville and Denver, and visit countries all over the world. Experiencing new and different foods and customs inspires her to stay on the move. “I took my first international trip when I was 19,” she says. “I went to Mexico on a trip with my church to build homes for an orphanage. I learned how to cook amazing carne asada and guacamole and hung out with the orphans and learned their stories.” CONTINUED >

She has continued to travel internationally at least once a year and has now visited a total of 45 countries. Everything she does is shared with a community of 15,000 followers at Alex Goes Global on Instagram. “I started blogging in 2012 after being asked by multiple people where I bought my yoga outfits,” says Tran. “I decided a blog would be a good place to publish my activewear reviews.” Over the years, her blog has evolved into a total lifestyle blog where she shares everything from travel and clothes to food and photography. “I review restaurants, fashion, and activities around the world,” she says. “People mostly follow me to find out new things to try and places to go domestically and internationally. I offer advice on how to navigate traveling and offer content that might be of interest to them.” After the pandemic hit, Tran began to include travel guides on her blog and socials. “We were grounded and I could no longer travel, so I took all my photos and began to write-up guides.” Since she’s also into keeping her body and mind healthy, in addition to yoga, Tran makes it a priority to get in a workout. “When traveling, I make sure to bring enough activewear and have access to gyms. I also prefer to walk a lot while traveling, and plan hikes and excursions that get me off the beaten path and keep my body moving.” She loves to cook and pays attention to the foods she’s putting into her body while at home and on the road. “One important thing that I always do while traveling is ensure that my travel companions and I get in our greens and split meals,” she says. “It can be very easy to forget about our health while traveling, but if you make it a habit to eat healthy, drink lots of water, and move your body daily, then you can stay fit while on the road.”

At Premier Foot & Ankle Centers of Tennessee, Dr. JennaLou Hollnagel-Kauffman Is Promoting The Benefits Of Fit Feet For All ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice gymnast, avid runner or collegiate athlete, the pathway to victory is much less treacherous for those who enter the field of competition with a pair of fit feet. Dr. JennaLou Hollnagel-Kauffman (most call her Dr. JennaLou) of Franklin can attest to that score. She grew up as an equestrian rider, later participated in fitness competitions and at one time was a Certified Personal Trainer. Even when she wasn’t actively competing, she remained close to the action, serving on the administrative staff of the Florida Gators football team while an undergrad at the University of Florida. Dr. JennaLou is also the owner of Premier Foot & Ankle Centers of Tennessee where she is triple board-certified in podiatry, foot/ankle surgery and wound care. That is where she helps Middle Tennesseans recover from a variety of foot and ankle ailments ranging from general podiatry like warts and ingrown toenails to traumatic injuries like fractures and tendon tears. “People don’t realize how much they rely on healthy feet until their feet hurt,” she says. “The foot is complex with multiple joints that work together. When one has a problem, the others have to step in. Wound care is especially critical in podiatry. Open sores from trauma, diabetes or other vascular insufficiencies can be debilitating and alter someone’s lifestyle if not taken care of quickly and properly.” A native of South Florida, Dr. JennaLou majored in pre-professional Botany. “I started to understand different (non-synthetic) ways to treat the body,” she says. “I had an opportunity to work with the podiatrist for the Miami Heat (of the NBA) and I liked the variety podiatry had to offer. I could be in the operating room or wound care or the office.” After graduation she attended Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine in Miami Shores, one of only nine podiatric schools in the country. She also trained as a fellow of Dr. Lee Dellon, a leading neurologist and neurosurgeon and a pioneer in the field of peripheral nerve decompression. Of course, medical school is stressful so, as a counter measure, she turned to competitive bodybuilding. “I’ve always liked working out so when I wasn’t studying, I would exercise,” she says. “It was more for the challenge, but it also helped me stay fit physically, which helps you stay sharp mentally. All of that was necessary in order to be successful in school.” CONTINUED >

Three years ago, Dr. JennaLou and her family moved to Middle Tennessee and settled in Franklin. “My husband's from the Northeast and I’m from South Florida; he’s a city boy and I’m a country girl,” she says. “So we met in the middle.” She credits her husband as being her biggest supporter throughout her career. Premier Foot & Ankle Centers of Tennessee is located at 600 Church Street in Franklin. Dr. JennaLou also has a second office, Advanced Wound Care and Vascular Center of Tennessee, located in Smyrna. As with all healthcare specialists, Dr. JennaLou offers a few healthy hints and tips that can alleviate the wear and tear on your feet. “One of the most important things you can do at all times, but especially in winter, is to stay hydrated and protect your feet,” she says. “Hormones change as we age and not being properly hydrated and keeping your feet warm and supported during the cold-weather months can lead to foot pain.” Dr. JennaLou is a fan of the trend of men wearing athletic shoes to work and when dressing up. She says they can look great from a fashion perspective but the wider widths and smaller heals are significantly more foot friendly. Likewise, she says women should avoid high heels. But if you must, try to wear a wedge heel with a gradual lift of no more than an inch. “Everyone’s pain

tolerance is different but if it’s ongoing, get it checked out,” she says. “It could be as simple as wearing the wrong shoes.” Of the many services available at Premier Foot & Ankle, regenerative medicine, which includes Stem Cell/HCHAPTX3 protein therapy and PRP (platelet rich plasma) treatments, helps reduce pain and keeps patients out of the operating room. She also provides KeryFlex nail restoration. “It’s a synthetic toenail that’s made from dental resin so it will not harbor fungus,” she says. “It restores the natural look of the nail. We do it in the office and it’s painless.” Among the newer services for 2025 is the introduction of a Class IV laser. This treats all ailments including fungus, warts, pain and inflammation, wounds and neuropathy, tendonitis and arthritis. Even with the growing practice, she still finds time for athletics. These days that means working with Special Olympics. She provides foot exams for the competitors at three annual events: winter in Gatlinburg, summer in Nashville and fall in Murfreesboro. “They’re great events for athletes of all ages and disabilities,” she says. “We work hard to obtain sponsors for inserts, shoes, socks and laces that are easy for athletes to use." Because no matter what the activity is, the pathway to success requires a pair of fit feet. DrJennaLou.com

WINTER WELLNESS GUIDE
Fo r S t ay i n g Ac t i ve With The Dark And Cold Months In Full Swing, Here Are Some Ways To Keep Our Minds And Bodies Healthy
ARTICLE BY MORGAN RAUM

What better time to focus on health and wellness than with the fresh start of a new year? With the winter months now upon us, it is essential that we do all we can to take care of ourselves - both mentally and physically.
GET UP AND GET ACTIVE
It is no secret that it can be hard for our minds and bodies to adjust to the shorter days and freezing temperatures, but being active doesn’t always have to mean spending hours in the gym. The CDC recommends that “Adults should aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate to intense activity a week.” Experts have seen a reduction in anxiety and blood pressure by those who implement exercise into their daily routine. Taking your dog for a daily walk, shoveling snow, ice skating, playing a sport, stretching, dancing, doing chores, doing yoga - or even making a choice as simple as deciding to take the stairs - are all examples of workouts that contribute to staying active and getting our bodies up and moving. Fortunately, Tennessee has some of the most beautiful landscapes that can help make exercise feel less intimidating. For example, bundle up, grab a friend and spend the morning walking the trails at Radnor Lake or Smith Park. Having such beautiful sites in our backyard is something we should all take advantage of.
NOURISH YOUR BODY
In addition to exercise, diet is an important factor to consider when discussing health and wellness. According to Dr. Vesna Skul of the Comprehensive Center for Women’s Medicine, “Loading up on healthy fats, such as avocados, fatty fish, dark chocolate, chia seeds, whole eggs, extra virgin olive oils, nuts, and even cheese help beat winter fatigue.” All these foods are natural fats, which also act as natural anti-inflammatories, and can help alleviate joint aches and pains, enhance brain function and improve your mood. Incorporating fiber into meals is also important because it can help to rebalance the sweet indulgences many partake in during the holiday months. Dr. Skul also recommends cooking with turmeric as it is known to help boost the immune system and helps benefit the heart. “Spicing your tea or coffee with cinnamon to prevent blood sugar spikes," "adding onions and garlic to sautéed and/or steamed dishes, have antibacterial and antiviral properties,” she says. Next time you’re walking down Main Street in downtown Franklin, you may want to consider stocking up on immunity boosting spices at Savory Spice Shop. Starting your morning with a shot of apple cider vinegar, ginger, and spices such as turmeric and cayenne can also work magic in the winter months. “Making sure you have plenty of me-time is not an indulgence, but rather a self-care necessity.”
is another option that also serves as a great alternative to the sweet coffee drinks offered this time of year since it has several inflammation and immune health benefits.
BATTLING THE WINTER BLUES
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is real and occurs in more people than you may think. The dark and cold days can take a toll on mental health, so it's important to do the little things that can help brighten the day. The Comprehensive Center for Women’s Health states, “Making sure you have plenty of me-time is not an indulgence, but rather a self-care necessity.” Staying well-rested and getting a good night’s sleep can also work wonders. The stress of the holidays can create a lasting effect on minds and bodies. Picking up a new hobby, listening to favorite songs, and surrounding yourself with people and things that make you smile are all small ways to try and help defeat the winter blues.
BENEFITS OF COLD WEATHER
While getting out of bed in the morning is a dreaded moment for many - especially during the colder months exercising in cooler temperatures can actually help boost your immune system. According to Loyola Medicine, Dr. Yaroslav Bodnar states, “Physical activity increases the production of immune cells and antibodies, helping the body defend against illnesses. Exposure to cold air during outdoor activities may also stimulate the production of white blood cells, enhancing overall immune function.” When exercising, the body releases endorphins which help boost your mood. Exercising in winter months also helps to maintain heart health, including improving circulation, keeping a steady and reduced blood pressure, as well as enhancing our heart function. Whether it be in the gym or the outdoors, in Middle Tennessee there are ample options for staying active both outdoors and indoors between Pilates studios, yoga studios, boxing classes, barre and strength classes, to name just a few.

BUILDING WELLNESS AND BREAKING STIGMAS
Tennessee Voices for Children Inc., also known as TN Voices, is a nonprofit mental health provider that is a community based organization in all 95 counties of Tennessee. With staff that live in all counties, they seek to ensure that mental health needs are met across the whole state. Chief Executive Officer, Rikki Harris shares more about this organization, and how our community can be engaged during January's Mental Health Awareness month.
Q: WHERE DID TN VOICES BEGIN AND HOW HAS IT GROWN?
A: We were founded in 1986 by Tipper Gore, who worked with a group of people who were concerned about children’s mental health needs and their ability to be educated when they have a diagnosis that might cause educational struggles. This group started to explore how to work alongside schools, parents, and kids who might be struggling with mental health needs to accommodate those needs and make that a more collaborative topic between schools and mental health partners. We’ve grown over the last 38 years. With 250 employees, we now have services that are tailored to all different stages of life. We also have programs for adults who may have come out of mental health hospitals or institutions to provide housing options for them to live in our homes with support around them so that they can enjoy being a part of a community. At the
heart of TN Voices, we try our best to advocate for peoples’ mental health needs and use our own lived experiences to help others.
Q: WHAT ROLE DOES TN VOICES PLAY IN CREATING SOLUTIONS FOR THESE CHILDREN, ADULTS, AND FAMILIES?
A: We partner with families and meet them where they are to guide them to the services they need, which can be anything from talking with their school to get an individualized educational plan set up, to accessing services to have outpatient therapy and medication management. Most of the time we have services to help, but other times we walk them to a partner organization to ensure that their needs are met. So collaborating with schools, hospitals, and anywhere else that people show up with mental health needs is important. We also do a lot of training sessions to help support the workforce and families who work with children. CONTINUED >

“I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A WORLD WHERE WE ALL VIEW PHYSICAL HEALTHCARE AND MENTAL HEALTHCARE THROUGH THE SAME LENS.”
TN Voices Staff focus on involvement and connection in the community
112 M EN TA L WE LLB E IN G | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS
Q: WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT OUR COMMUNITY CAN ENCOURAGE PURSUING MENTAL HEALTHCARE?
A: I would love to see a world where we all view physical healthcare and mental healthcare through the same lens instead of separating mental health as an embarrassing struggle or something that’s not real. This would make it a normal conversation for children to identify feelings and teach them how to express them instead of avoiding them. It also looks like encouraging and celebrating those who seek help and well-being in their life. Most families know that it’s a good idea to make sure that their kids have annual check ups, regular dental checks, eat nutritious food, and participate in physical activity, but when it comes to mental health, there’s not one specific idea that most families know is a way to prevent their kids from having mental health struggles. A focus on mental wellness is really just a focus on whole-self care and understanding your needs. We all need to figure out what we need physically, mentally, spiritually, and socially, and then make time for those things. TNVoices.org

ARTICLE BY MARIA DINOIA | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED The Horse Shoe Farm is a sanctuary where time seems to slow, inviting guests into a world of holistic wellness and healing with time to just be — perfect for those looking to cultivate a deeper sense of wellness, enhance their mental clarity, or simply escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Kicking off in January 2025, The Horse Shoe Farm will debut a Winter Wellness BEtreat Series, where guests will be guided on either a two or three-night program by renowned wellness coaches and providers who specialize in holistic practices and personal growth. What’s a BEtreat, you ask? It’s simple. It’s the notion that a retreat should not be centered around the idea of escaping life, but rather embracing the present moment, learning and growing, and moving forward on your path to become your best self.

January 10-12 Outside of the BEtreat Series, The Horse Shoe Farm also offers a laundry list of holistic treatments and journeys for guests to embark on and has also partnered with Yona FrenchHawk, a full-blooded Cherokee Wisdom Keeper and Ceremonialist to build a sweat lodge on property and be the host of community ceremonies each full and new moon. Yona was born and raised on the Qualla Indian Boundary in the Great Smoky Mountains in Cherokee, North Carolina, and to keep his traditions alive, he is honored to bridge the ancient past to the ancient future which is in constant need of support. In addition to the full and new moon ceremonies, he will also offer private ceremonies for both individuals and groups to book through the hotel's equestrian stable-turned-spa, aptly named the Stable Spa, which sits directly above one of the known vortexes on-site. It’s a new year and many of us are turning our attention to eating healthier foods. And don’t forget the supplements! You may have already spent a small fortune packing the pantry with protein bars and shakes and powders that, if we’re going to be honest, stand about a 50-50 chance of being right where they are a year from now. It’s the annual conundrum: If only healthy eating were tasty and less expensive, we’d all be fit in time for pool season! What you may not know is that at least part of your solution can be found in the frozen food section of your neighborhood grocer. That’s where you’ll find a variety of top-quality burritos and breakfast sandwiches from Franklin-based Red’s All Natural. “I’m certainly not suggesting that everyone only eat Red’s burritos, but there’s an element of quality and portion control, and a balance in the nutritional profile that’s hard to beat,” says Red’s All Natural Founder and CEO, Mike Adair. “Combine that with the fact that it’s something you’ll actually enjoy eating, compared to a protein bar that you’ll eat, but not be super excited about.” Adair admits that he’s biased but he also says that he eats two to three Red’s products every day: a breakfast sandwich in the morning and a burrito or two for a snack or fulfilling meal throughout the workday. And at roughly 200-300 calories and 13-15 grams of protein per five-ounce portion there’s plenty of room to spare for a satisfying dinner at home every evening. “One of the ways we’ve been successful is that our products are very approachable in terms of size and price point,” says Adair.
Another way has been by an uncompromising commitment to sourcing ingredients of the finest quality, including organic whenever possible. “When we started, I did not know a lot about the food business but I knew that if the ingredients were simple, I wanted to put them in the product,” says Adair. “What my wife and I are cooking at home are the same ingredients that go into Red’s. Then as I learned more about the industry, I began to understand that anti-biotic and hormone-free and organic and non-GMO were, in effect, just descriptions of what food was like 50 years ago. There was no organic; it’s just the way it was grown.” From that point forward, Adair and his team sourced farmers and suppliers who shared those values. “We simply wanted to put the highest quality ingredients we could into the products we made,” he says. “We wanted to enjoy them and feel good about feeding them to ourselves and our families. And we thought there was a market for a lot of people like us.” CONTINUED >

The Adair Family
In 15 years, Red’s has become the nation’s second-largest producer of frozen burritos, and first in the premium category, with nationwide distribution. Eight years ago, Red’s opened a plant in South Dakota where everything is made. Tortillas are made from scratch with flour, water and a little oil, salt and sugar. Beans are kettle cooked, cheese is shredded, and sauces are all made in house. Each burrito is hand-rolled then flash-frozen at the peak of freshness so there is no-to-negligible degradation by the time you pop the item in the oven, microwave or air fryer. A culinary team led by some of the nation’s best chefs are engaged in the ongoing process of perfecting existing recipes and developing new ones. Red’s was inspired by the recipes of Adair’s wife, Paige, when the young couple were living in Connecticut. Prior to founding the company, Adair worked in financial sales (he has an MBA from Dartmouth) which he characterizes as a great experience in a sector he never really loved. “I was in between meetings one day, wearing a full suit, when I walked into an animal shelter that was down the street,” Adair says. “By the time I got to the last cage there were three big mangy-looking mutts and one of them was big and reddish-looking. And he was just kind of looking at me like, ‘man, please, I’ll be good, I promise; just get me outta here.’ And I just couldn’t walk away.”
122 EAT R IGH T | FO O D + BEVE RAGE
That mangy mutt became Red, the company’s namesake. He was with Adair for 12 years before passing away about five years ago. “He was an amazing partner and super loyal,” Adair says. “He came to the office every day for the first 5-6 years at least, always asleep at my feet as I was trying to figure out how to continue to survive and build the company day-by-day.” Adair and Paige moved their family to Franklin 12 years ago–they have family in town and thought it would be good for the cousins to grow up together–and relocated the company headquarters as well. About 40 people are employed at the Cool Springs office. The Adairs can often be found at ball fields across the area, cheering or coaching their children’s teams. They have two daughters, Finley (15) and Samantha (14); and a son, Hunter (12). And they added a new dog, a golden retriever called Mac, about two years ago. It’s along those sidelines that conversations about Red’s come up. “There’s no bigger compliment or highlight than meeting someone on the sidelines of a game and they figure out I’m the burrito guy and they say ‘Oh, my gosh, we love this item’ or ‘we love that item,’” says Adair. “To me that’s the most rewarding thing. It’s what keeps me going all day, every day.” RedsAllNatural.com

SWEETS The beginning of the year is packed with inspiration and motivation to get back on track after a sweet-filled holiday season. It can feel extreme, and it also can be depleting to cut oneself off from everything indulgent after weeks of eating favorite sweet and savory recipes. For sugar lovers who believe going cold-turkey feels intimidating or overwhelming, nutrition-packed desserts are a great way to stick to healthy food goals without the guilt.

Quinoa BREAKFAST Bars
This recipe is a classic favorite. If you cut the bars into 16 pieces, they are around 270 calories each. They are very filling, packed with healthy goodies and taste, oh so delicious. If you can’t finish them yourself (it makes a lot!), bring samples along to your next workout class to share the love. Your accountability group will be asking you for the recipe! These come in handy for a quick breakfast on-the-go or an afternoon snack. You’ll want to taste these out of the oven once they cool a bit... simply scrumptious. Combine: • 1 cup wheat flour • 2 cups cooked quinoa, cooled • 2 cups oats • 2/3 cup of your choice of chopped nuts • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 tablespoons chia seeds • 2/3 cup raisins • Optional: chocolate chips as desired • Optional: add additional seeds or nuts on hand such as pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc. Notes: Boil quinoa at a 2:1 water to rice ratio. For estimating, 1/3 cup of uncooked quinoa yields 1 cup cooked quinoa. Add this mixture slowly to combine: • 2 eggs • 2/3 cup peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower butter • 1/2 cup honey • 1 banana • 1 teaspoon vanilla Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes, or until when the edges get golden brown. Bake in a 9x13-inch glass dish. After they cool, slice and enjoy. Keep them covered to maintain freshness.

1. Cut a banana into 8-10 small slices, around 1/2 inch each. 2. Spread 1/2 tablespoon of peanut butter (or your choice of nut butter) on each banana slice. 3. Drizzle a small amount of melted chocolate chips or caramel over each bite. 4. Freeze for 15-20 minutes and enjoy! Pro tip: A dash of sea salt flakes on top of these can be *chef’s kiss.* These are great to keep on hand in the freezer all weeklong. Once they set, add them to a closed container to keep the bananas from browning.
Late night snack cravings are real! When finding yourself rooting through the cabinets for a sweet fix, these protein cookie dough bites are a great way to curb temptation. This recipe yields around 20 small bites, which can be cut into small squares or rolled into dough balls. Each bite is around 105 calories. If you find the dough is a little too dry, add a dash of milk as needed. Ingredients • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 cup vanilla protein powder • 1/4 cup maple syrup • 1/4 cup peanut butter (or alternate nut or sunflower butter) • 1 cup almond flour • 1 teaspoon vanilla • Chocolate chips as desired Pro tip: Use mini chocolate chips and for a dash of savory add sea salt flakes on top. Once combined, store the bites in the refrigerator in a covered container to keep them moist.

Frozen PEANUT BUTTER Bites
Danger ahead: this snack is amazing. It’s the easiest of the bunch and also satisfies a sweet tooth craving. This can be whipped together in just 5 minutes and makes just a small amount. Feel free to take creative liberty here with your amounts, but if you make it to this recipe, they are around 90 calories per bite.
