Maria Dinoia | maria.dinoia@citylifestyle.com

Ahhhh...we made it. We made it through the gray and dreary days of January and the cold and icy days of February. Here we are in March and spring is on the horizon. Hello warmer weather! Warmer weather brings with it thoughts of spring cleaning and getting your home party-ready and perfect for entertaining. And how lucky for you that March is our home and design issue, so we have lots of articles to help with that! From organizing and decluttering and helpful kitchen gadgets, to painting, remodeling and transforming your garage, we've got you covered. We also shine the spotlight on some Franklin residents who are doing some big things. And we've got lots of St. Patrick's Day ideas to share. And we can't forget our cover star and story on comedian Nate Bargatze. He's headlining Bridgestone Arena next month and his popularity is soaring. We had a chance to catch up with him at The Bobby Hotel before he heads out on the road. Make sure to get your tickets and be prepared for loud, unrestrained bursts of laughter! As we emerge from our winter cocoons, I look forward to seeing you around town in the warmer weather!

Celebrate St . Pat rick's Day R ight WITH IRISH STEW The month of March is here, signaling springtime is just ahead. There’s also that merrymaking holiday on the 17th, when many pull out the green outfits and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by cooking the traditional foods of Ireland while toasting with spirited Irish beverages. Known as the signature dish of Ireland, traditional Irish Stew is composed of a simple combination of lamb and root vegetables. But there is no rule that says we can’t get creative

in the kitchen and put our own spins on old favorites. This recipe features a few twists on the classic that create a richer depth of flavor. The addition of malty dark Guinness Stout Beer, the iconic beer of Ireland, gives this tomato based version an unexpected tangy sharpness. A swap out from the typical lamb to hearty robust slow braised beef short ribs takes this dish over the top, creating the ultimate comfort food and a decadent indulgence for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.

The decision to build from the ground up can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time and during a pandemic. The Legend team never missed a beat; they made the process so easy and fun with no delays. They are trustworthy, collaborative and their weekly communication updates through the app and throughout the process were superb. They were always available to answer questions and provide great advice even after we closed. We are so grateful for their team and our dream home. We would highly recommend Legend Homes to anyone considering building a new home in Middle TN. Amanda & Kevin

Ask The Expert: Becoming a Real Estate Agent Q & A With “Coach” Brandon Baca ARTICLE BY JESSICA WAYMAN

Brandon Baca, aka “Coach Baca,” Founder and CEO of Ten Oaks Real Estate, has been a real estate agent for 15 years and has been coaching people on how to become a successful real estate agent for the last decade.

1. WHAT DOES A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A REAL ESTATE AGENT LOOK LIKE? A real estate agent wears three hats. One of them is business development – figuring out how to get people to use you as their real estate agent. The second one is customer service – showing houses, listing houses, negotiating contracts, etc. And the third hat is transaction management. You’re running “air traffic control” for the transaction – title companies, lenders, mortgage companies – you’re arranging all that stuff. You progressively take off one hat at a time. But your number one job is to figure out how to get people to use you as their real estate agent.

2. HOW DO REAL ESTATE AGENTS BEST MANAGE THEIR TIME? If you really want to build a business, you have to create rhythms, routines, and rituals to your days and your weeks – that is what’s going to move you forward in the business.

3. HOW DO YOU BEGIN A CAREER AS A REAL ESTATE AGENT? First, you have to go to real estate school – that’s roughly 90 hours of education. You can do it online or in a classroom setting. Once you’re finished, you’ll take a PSI exam. After you become a licensed real estate agent, you have to sign on with a brokerage for at least two to three years. A lot of brokerages are a legal entity with a little bit of training and a few classes. We’re first about agent success at Ten Oaks. We dig in with our agents and help them build a plan to become successful in a way that fits their lives.

A NEW SEASON OF LIFE, HOPE AND JOY AN ARTIST HEALING HERSELF AND OTHERS THROUGH MUSIC

ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

B ACK STAGE | ENTERTA INME NT

While living in her native Minnesota and acting in local theaters, at the age of 21, Laura Osnes won an NBC reality TV competition and found herself moving to New York City to star on Broadway. After 15 years of performing on stage in a myriad of acclaimed shows, including those at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, the Tony-nominated star was flying high. When it all came crashing down in 2021, she had to find the fortitude to reinvent herself and discover new outlets for her incredible talent. "A gossip column published a narrative that caused me to face cancel-culture," she says. "It was a painful and hurtful time, but it also birthed new art and new relationships."

In September of 2021, Laura and her husband, Nathan Johnson, whom she met in Minnesota and has been married to for 16 years, found sanctuary in Franklin. “What I love about Franklin is that it’s close to Nashville, but there's also such a peace here,” she says. “We felt welcomed with open arms and it’s a place where people look out for each other.” She also found a creative way to reflect on the trauma she experienced while at the same time finding hope and joy in what she calls the new season of her life. In October of 2022, Laura released the EP On the Other Side - Part 1, featuring five original songs that are deeply moving and relatable for others who may be going through difficult times. “At my core, I’m a creative and a storyteller, and when I wasn't able to do that through the way I had been, songwriting became a beautiful vehicle both for healing and to tell my story in a new way,” she says. “And I really hope that this music reaches the ears and hearts of those who need to hear it.” CONTINUED >

Singing in a commercial contemporary space is very different than singing with a musical theater voice, explains Laura. "It's been a humbling and exciting challenge for me as an artist to discover a new side to my vocal quality, while still creating a sound that feels authentically me." Her songs are available on all major music platforms and through a link in her social media profiles. Part two of the EP, to be released this year, will contain at least another five tracks. Laura is also showcasing her acting talent again by starring in Shiners, a cirque-style show at the Woolworth Theatre in Nashville. “It’s a comedy and musical spectacular for grownups,” she says. “Country music artist Chuck Wicks created the show and he’s my co-star. We're having a great time together.” Laura is also teaching and coaching private students pursuing musical theater, singing and acting. “I've been forced to think outside my own box that I had put myself in,” she says. “It’s scary to try new things, but that’s also how we become bigger and better and hopefully reach more people through different ways as an artist.” LauraOsnes.com, @LauraOsnes

Clean Is Cool Nate Bargatze's Wholesome Path To Success ARTICLE BY JOE WEST | PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIELLE DEL VALLE @ THE BOBBY HOTEL, MAKEUP BY MERCY ANDERSON As Nate Bargatze prepares to embark on his most expansive year of comedy to date, he’s proving overand-over that his style of wholesome comedy is without a doubt, cool and trending. If you haven’t come across Nate this past calendar year, you’re certainly in the minority. He’s been making the rounds on late night television, clips from his performances are going viral on social media, he’s the host of his own podcast, Nateland, and has multiple stand-up comedy specials across streaming services.

When he’s not entertaining arena-sized audiences, he’s also dabbling in acting. Sure, there are a few other comedians with a similar resume, but it’s Nate’s brand that sets him apart from most others. Nate is known for his observational humor, storytelling and southern charm. What some may not have noticed is his comedy is not opinionated, it’s not political, and it's certainly not risqué. “This is the comedy I want to do,” he says. “When you’re a clean comic, you don’t really want people to CONTINUED >

"I think sometimes clean comedy has a stigma and I don’t think it has to. I think you can make clean comedy cool.”

think about it. That’s the goal. I like when people don’t even realize I’m clean and I also like when people are there because I’m clean.” Nate says his style wasn’t a conscious decision. “Luckily, I started this way,” he says. “It’s just how my brain works. I think sometimes clean comedy has a stigma and I don’t think it has to. I think you can make clean comedy cool.” Raised in Old Hickory, Tennessee, Nate is one of the few touring comedians who appear to adhere to a strict clean brand of show despite the lewder approach to comedy by some of his peers. He doesn’t hold judgement against others, having partnered with many comedians with different styles. “On the Nateland podcast I introduce a lot of other comics,” he says. “When they are with me, they are clean, even if they are not always clean outside my shows. I don’t make anyone do anything. This is just what I do.” That doesn’t prevent him from wondering if he should be mimicking some of those styles. “I remind myself that I don’t think that’s what I’m being called to do,” he says. "I'm called to be entertaining." Nate takes pride knowing his comedy can bring the whole family together and appeals to all. “I have a 10-year-old and there’s not a lot you can do with them anymore.” He says it’s nice when the family can do something together and compares it to some of his own experiences growing up. “[Comedy] was such a big deal. Going with your family and a kid seeing their dad laugh really hard. I remember how great it is and how great it feels. You just want to recreate that for people.”

It’s working. Nate’s comedy and his career certainly have momentum, and he continues to churn out great material. His third hour-long stand-up special called Hello World dropped on Amazon Prime earlier this year. “I feel really good about this last special,” he says. “You never think you’re going to come up with something else. Every single time, [I question] how am I ever going to come up with something new. There’s nothing else to talk about, but you just have to trust you’re going to find something.” Hello World was taped in Phoenix, Arizona as an ‘in-the-round’ performance where the audience sits 360-degrees around the stage. “I love in-the-round,” he says. “I don’t move a lot and it makes you move and be a little more animated.” Nate will be performing a similar show at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on April 15. This will be his largest show ever and will be in front of a home crowd. As the audiences continue to grow, connecting with fans can become even more challenging, especially in venues that have multiple seating tiers. “I try to make it feel like I’m talking to each person individually,” he says. “But I’m hoping everyone is connecting with each other. You’re all laughing together, with the people next to you, and that’s the bond.” Asked if there is additional pressure performing in front of a local crowd as opposed to other venues around the country, Nate replies, “Everybody’s here. It’s different in that sense. You’re doing the same act. Maybe I reference Nashville more being from here, but I want everything to be more perfect.

“It’s home. I remember handing out flyers in New York on the sidewalks to get five minutes of stage time at the end of the night at one o’clock in the morning in front of four people. As I’m out there in the freezing cold in New York, I remember thinking if I could get to Bridgestone it would be crazy, but you don’t really think you can get there.” Nate won’t find himself in the position of having to hand out flyers for his shows any time soon. His tour last year was his largest ever and 2023 sets up to be even bigger. He’s fully booked coast-to-coast until June and then will begin his first European tour later this year. Catch his new special Hello World on Amazon Prime or download a new Nateland episode every Wednesday. NateBargatze.com

Have you ever wanted to do something different but had no idea what you should do instead? Michael Heyen experienced this feeling while working in the information technology world. In May 2022, he took a leap of faith and decided to pursue a life redesign and hasn’t looked back. Michael grew up on a farm in Illinois and attended college at Union University in Jackson, Tennessee where he met his wife, Lanetta. He started out in the finance field but transitioned into IT while implementing financial applications for FedEx and healthcare companies. In 2001, a close friend convinced him to take a position in Nashville, so Michael and his young family headed east and settled in Franklin where they have lived ever since. As COVID disrupted the world, Michael also felt the impact personally, professionally and more importantly, spiritually. A number of issues early last year, including the departure from his company of his entire IT team and many close friends, prompted some soul searching. One day, he received a message on LinkedIn asking if he would be interested in starting his own local business. He did some research on possible options and prayed through the process that doors would be closed to the roads he should not take. One business opportunity remained wide open -- Hello Garage. “I looked into the company and thought everything about it was attractive and just had a gut feeling that something was special,” Heyen says. He had always loved the idea of providing a service to people and wanted to upgrade his own garage, so it felt right. But it was when he visited the headquarters in Omaha that he knew it was the place for him. During a question and answer session, the CEO stated, “This is a Christian family-based company and with Hello Garage, we are able to accomplish kingdom’s work.” Heyen admits it is a challenge to leave the security of a monthly corporate paycheck, but he stands by his decision. “I love what I am doing and trusting God for the outcome," he says. "People call me that want to update and elevate their garage space, so it is a

I can be salt and a light to a whole new community that I would’ve never been exposed to previously.” In December 2022, he was reminded that he made the right choice. “Lanetta and I were driving to pick up our grandson on New Year’s Eve for our first sleepover with G-Pa and Netta and suddenly were sideswiped off Interstate 65 by a hit-and-run driver.” Their car flipped over the guardrail and went into a ravine. “We see the pictures of the car (total loss) and are amazed we walked away unscathed.” That event renewed his focus on being a local business owner that helps others and a living example of God’s grace and protection. “People have stopped in and shared fond memories of this building,” says Sharon Hicks, co-owner of Carriage House Custom Homes & Interiors along with her husband Waine Hicks. “Fun memories of getting groceries here and eating baloney sandwiches with their parents.” The building Sharon is referring to is their Carriage House showroom, located at 1974 Wilson Pike in Franklin, and former home of Franklin gas station and store Jamison Market and Deli. This market was a thriving local business for many years before becoming the permanent location for Carriage House Custom Homes & Interiors. Sharon and Waine’s journey to opening Carriage House was anything but ordinary. Sharon, born in New Jersey, was 13 years old when her family moved to Sarasota, Florida. She explains, “My brother had bad allergies and Florida was suggested as a good place to move. I remember thinking, ‘You’re kidding - we’re moving to Florida?’ But it ended up working out fine and my brother’s allergies got a lot better.” Waine was raised on a tobacco farm in Southern Virginia and attended Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Maryland. “My baseball team played in the NAIA World Series, now NCAA Division III, and our team still celebrates every year with a reunion, usually centered around a baseball activity,” he says. He became a partner in a roofing and siding business in Virginia after graduating from college, and eventually moved to Sarasota to be closer to his mom. A mutual friend introduced him to Sharon,

and after tying the knot Waine formed his own company W.P. Hicks Construction, and Sharon worked in banking. After several years, they folded W.P. Hicks Construction into their new business, Cabinets Extraordinaire. They decided to move to Tennessee 10 years ago. “Tennessee was considerably closer to our family here and in Virginia,” says Sharon. “We were able to sell our business in Florida rather quickly and never looked back. The business continues to thrive in that area, which makes us very proud.” Waine and Sharon are the happy keepers of three horses, two Boston terriers and one donkey. A picture of their donkey, Clyde, was shown on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" a few years ago. “I have a friend who works for NBC at Rockefeller Center and he created a video of Clyde to play before commercial breaks,” explains Sharon. “In the video, he sounds like he’s saying, ‘We’ll be right back.’” Notes Waine, “We started Carriage House in an office space with a few displays on Downs Boulevard, then moved to a retail space on Columbia Avenue which gave us some great exposure. Breaking into the local market wasn’t easy, but persistence paid off.” “We were driving by the old Jamison Market building one day and noticed it was for sale,” adds Sharon. “Waine asked, ‘How about moving to this building?’ I give him a lot of credit for having the vision to see the big picture.” “We moved to Wilson Pike last year and it has proven to be a great location with lots of local and residential traffic. We love being in Franklin,” says Waine. Waine is a member of the local National Association of Home Builders, has several certifications, and has previously served on its national Board of Directors. Sharon is certified by the National Kitchen and Bath Association and is an Allied ASID (American Association of Interior Designers) member. They both volunteer for the Boys and Girls Clubs and are members of St. Philip Catholic Church in Franklin. “We’re very dedicated to our team,” adds Sharon. “We’re always trying to

Not Your Dad's 'Architect' With Inspiration From His Father, Turner Binkley Is Leading A New Generation In Home Design ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

D E C OR T R E N D S | HOM E + DE S I GN

Like so many others, Turner Binkley has fond childhood memories of tagging along with his father to the office. He would borrow colorful markers to create his own “renderings” while his dad, Ed Binkley, worked on a variety of new projects. “My dad is a very talented architect,” says Binkley. “He was, and still is, a rockstar to me. When I was in fourth grade, he won a design competition for Habitat for Humanity and appeared on CBS This Morning with Bob Vila. I remember the teacher stopping class so we could watch him on TV. “He’s done some big projects for Darden restaurants and designed homes for high-profile clients like Barry Bonds and Tiger Woods. Whenever there was a new restaurant opening or a big star was building a new house, he was the guy who made it come to life.” Born in Nashville, Turner’s family moved to the Orlando area when he was three so that Ed could start a new job with a major national firm. His formative years coincided with the proliferation of computers at home and at school. “By the time I was in seventh grade, we were no longer learning to write in cursive; we were learning to work on computers,” he says. Binkley entered the architectural arena at the age of 14 when his dad placed him under the supervision of a colleague. Despite his lack of experience, or maybe because of it, he was among the first in the firm to apply computer-aided design technology to a centuries-old craft.

“A new software application was introduced around 2005 and the firm tasked my father and myself with testing it to determine if it had any merit in the industry,” he says. “I took it home, and it was like a light switch was turned on. It started with shapes, then evolved into posting renderings on Instagram. It could make designs look like they were alive.” The software was SketchUp, which now is as essential to the modern architect as drafting boards were to previous generations. But the old guys at the firm were not quick to embrace the new fad. “There’s a saying that architecture is an old man’s game, and a lot of firms still struggle with {software} because of that,” says Binkley. “I was told it didn’t have a place in architecture, but I kept using it. Now it’s standard within the industry for 3D design and modeling.” Binkley was so far ahead of the curve that his college architecture courses were behind it. Instructors would call on him for assistance. So with a large and lucrative professional portfolio already in hand, he made the decision to leave school. To be clear, Binkley is not an architect, because he lacks a formal degree. Rather, he likens himself to an athlete that left college early to turn pro. “I got drafted as a sophomore into the big leagues,” he says. “Early on I met with big builders and high-profile developers and learned how numbers and design correlate with each other. It was a crash course in development.”

That led to stints with a variety of well-known firms and architects here and in Florida. By the time he was 21, he had worked with the developer and owner on the initial designs for what is now Harpeth Square in historic downtown Franklin. Binkley began working on that project, “when it was just a blank piece of land.” “I am blessed to work with some notables such as Mark Mitchell at BSB Design, Greg Gamble of Gamble Design Collaborative, and Mike Hathaway of 906 Studio Architects, just to name a few,” says Binkley. “My point is not to drop names, but to point out that I’ve had some really good mentors. I embraced the traditional approach to learning architecture by apprenticeship under some very talented architects and designers.” In 2019, he opened Binkley Designed, his first foray into running his own design firm. He’s teamed with Steven Edwards to create a small but powerful company that’s driven not by men in their 50s, but a group of “young guns” in their mid-30s with young families. They’ve designed hundreds of homes in developments like Troubadour, Oman, Governors Club, Kings Chapel, The Mill at Bond

Springs, The Grove, and Natures Landing. They’ve even done in-fills in Nashville and historic remodels in Franklin. “While the majority of our designs reflect more contemporary and modern elements, we have worked on a wide range of styles that have been developed throughout our projects. Whether it’s a modern infill, or a historic remodel, our focus is on designing projects that will withstand the test of time, not just what is popular at the moment. “We know what’s going on trend-wise throughout the country,” continues Binkley. “Architects are typically two years behind what we’re doing now. Steven is super talented and understands construction. I work on the creative side. We listen to the client and take notes so that we understand their thoughts and emotions and how that relates to their individual lifestyle.” From there, it goes on paper, into the computer and is brought to life as they partner with many of the area’s leading builders. “We’re not out to conquer the world and that’s by design,” says Binkley. “We like operating from behind the curtain.” Like father, like son. How Can I Make Money By Decluttering My Household? ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

Sell, Refurbish and Donate Unused Items

FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE AND OTHER RESALE APPS From clothing and furniture to games, sports equipment and more, posting items on Marketplace is an easy way to rid yourself of unwanted and unneeded merchandise, make money and create more space where you need it. Preloved clothing apps like Poshmark, thredUP, and Vestiaire Collective are also great avenues to raise cash (or an economical way to change up your wardrobe!)

CONSIGNMENT SHOPS

GARAGE/YARD/ ESTATE SALES Have people come to you and browse through your and your family’s unused or unwanted items. For a successful event, clean up merchandise, organize similar items on tables and other tidy display surfaces, and have everything priced for a quick sale.

These are not the thrift stores you remember from years past. Many consignment stores will buy everything from Gap t-shirts and jeans to high couture evening gowns, shoes and purses. When something sells, you get an agreed upon percentage of the proceeds.

DONATING TO LOCAL CHARITIES

REPURPOSE, REFINISH AND RESELL If you’re handy, building furniture from cast-off wood, or sanding and staining old but sturdy pieces of furniture found in an attic or at a garage sale, can be a one-time money maker or a new source of income. Buyers are often looking for something unique to display in their homes or businesses.

While this option won’t generate cash, donating pays in other ways. It provides not only the joy and satisfaction of knowing other people who are less fortunate are able to obtain much-wanted items, but donating provides a deduction you can claim on your taxes. Incorporating Locally-Influenced Design In Your Home What brought you to Franklin? Was it the picturesque streets, a perfectly preserved snapshot of a simpler time? Maybe it was the history woven through every piece of land and storefront, the community of friendly folks around every corner, the suburban lifestyle mere miles from a major city? Or was it the infinite rolling hills and farmlands interspersed with every retail and dining option imaginable? Whatever your draw to Franklin, we can all agree it’s a town as special as they come. As you leave the city behind and settle into your own home after a long day, allow a touch of Franklin to come home with you. There are plenty of ways to incorporate locally-influenced design in your home, from major decisions like wallpaper and carpet to simple accent pieces.

PURCHASE ART FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES. With a myriad of locally owned and operated businesses in the area, incorporating meaningful pieces nodding to Franklin is an easy way to bring local touches in-home. Make plans to stroll the Franklin Art Scene, a free monthly event that takes place every first Friday during which a collection of artists and galleries display their works along the streets of Historic Franklin. Not only do guests have the opportunity to purchase art from a variety of local vendors, but the art crawl is sure to make a memory that comes through each time the piece is admired.

MAKE MAJOR DESIGN CHOICES MEANINGFUL. For those building a home, undergoing a major renovation or looking to spruce up a space, consider design choices that nod to the area. From custom wallpaper likening to a street map or color choices influenced by a particular place, these choices, whether subtle or bold, not only help a home stand out, but also hold a special meaning for homeowners. Paige Harris, director of design at Valor Hospitality, worked to incorporate locally-influenced design when overseeing the build of the Harpeth Hotel and its onsite restaurant, 1799 Kitchen & Cocktails. “Every detail of 1799 (a nod to the year that Franklin was founded) was purposefully crafted to continue telling a neighborhood-centric story through design expression,” Paige shared. “Central to the restaurant is a semi-private dining area surrounded by wood millwork reflective of a whiskey barrel, with a ceiling detail that mimics the mash, an integral component in distillation. Lastly, the carpet was custom designed to radiate the pattern of the bottom of a rocks glass, complete with ice cubes.” While exploring a renovation, however, preserving as much of the home as possible is a nod to Franklin in and of itself. “Try to keep the integrity of the home even if you are renovating,” said Paige Williams, CEO of Paige Williams Interior Design. “Keep the history. We design for clients and the way people

want to live, but we’re not going to incorporate something ultra-modern if it will clash with the home itself.”

FILL SMALL SPACES WITH LOCAL TOUCHES. Spaces like coffee tables and bookshelves are the perfect opportunity to add a local touch through tchotchkes and trinkets. With a bit of planning and thoughtful shopping, these spaces can quickly go from mundane to meaningful. Consider adding a book to a coffee table or bookshelf sourced from right here in Franklin, from a variety of historical works by American historian and author James A. Crutchfield, Joe Johnston’s Franklin (Images of America) or The Bridge, a romance novel set in Franklin by number one New York Times bestselling author Karen Kingsbury.

With antique shops aplenty, spend a day strolling Main Street or Leiper’s Fork to find accent pieces. From vases to picture frames, adding a locally-sourced antique nods to Franklin’s historic past and patronizes a local business all the same.

DELIGHT THE SENSES WITH LOCAL TOUCHES. Thoughtful interior design often stimulates the senses: through sight, sounds, smells, touch and taste. Think about the senses that are evoked when walking through Franklin, the historic buildings and aged interiors, green spaces, blooming trees. “Franklin makes me think of history, preservation and the outdoors,” Williams shared. “Think of bringing the outside in by incorporating things like wood, wool, linens and natural stone. We did a remodel in Downtown Franklin and used fabric that was vibrant, floral and fun to match the energy of the area.” Textures appease sight and touch, but don’t forget about smell and taste too. Head to the Franklin Farmer’s Market on Saturdays to grab fresh local produce for the kitchen or flowers to spruce up any room. Or light up a “Franklin” candle by Amber Vale Home.

Raise A Glass! To Huckleberry Brewing ARTICLE BY LINDA DOHSE | PHOTOG R APHY BY DE B SCALLY Adam Levine (L), Mat Lumm and Jim Harney (R)

Adam Levine and Jim Harney crossed paths several years ago on their sons’ Cub Scouts camping trip and quickly realized they shared a common interest – owning their own business. The pair decided to open The Whiskey Shot in downtown Nashville’s Printer’s Alley four years ago. When Covid hit in 2020, Jim decided an occasional change of scenery when home schooling his kids was a good idea – and he chose the former Cool Springs Brewery. After they found out the brewery owners were looking for a new opportunity, Adam and Jim decided to make Huckleberry Brewing Company their newest endeavor in 2022. Brewmaster extraordinaire Mat Lumm, who Adam and Jim met through a mutual friend, joined them to open the brewery. Stop in for some delicious craft beer brewed onsite, scrumptious food from their scratch kitchen, and lots of family-friendly neighborhood camaraderie. Huckleberry Brewing presents a rotating lineup of its beer on tap, along with guest taps featuring creations from local Tennessee breweries. HucksBrew.com

Huckleberry Brewing prides itself on offering a wide selection of distinctive craft beer including:

Hazy Loco Lager 11 IBU 5.1% ABV Clean, crispy, and crushable. Delicately hopped, the subtle bitterness allows the light-bodied malt character to really pop in f lavor. This beer is intentionally made in a non-traditional and unconventional manner, however, it will surely please even the pickiest of lager lovers. A balanced bite of hops paired with a crisp, cracker-like f lavor and aroma will have your taste buds singing.

“I can’t get enough of this stuff.” - Grady, Local beer enthusiast and regular customer

Jamie's Juicy IPA 85 IBU 7.2% ABV Bitter yet balanced, with a big aroma and juicy hop flavor. New Zealand and American hops provide a well-rounded hop profile. Massive amounts of hops give this beer its "juicy" character. The light malt backbone allows the bouquet of hops to really shine through. This isn't a West Coast IPA or a New England IPA. It's a mutant hybrid of both. Expect to taste /smell lemon peel, grapefruit rind, honeydew, honeysuckle, and tropical fruit.

“Best IPA I’ve had since leaving the West Coast.” – Nick, Local beer enthusiast and regular customer

Maroon Six Amber 23 IBU 5.4% ABV Subtle notes of caramel are distinct in this medium-bodied amber ale. Light fruit aroma balances well with the roasted malt for a nice refreshing finish without being overly sweet.

“I love Maroon Six.” – Adam Levine, Owner

Dark Vade-r 36 IBU 8.9% ABV Big, dark, roasty, rich, and bold flavor with a nice dry finish. Notes of toffee, caramel, coffee, chocolate, and subtle raisin are what you can expect when sipping this brew. Best to enjoy after allowing the beer to warm in the glass for a few minutes to truly enjoy the complexity of the malt. Don't over-indulge or you may find yourself asking, "Who’s my father?" This one isn’t for the faint of heart!

For Nashville native Aaron Villanueva, his work has always been centered around family. He began his career learning the ropes of painting while working with his father, who was a painter. Eventually the time he put into gaining experience and knowledge of the trade led him to open his own company, AllBright Pro Painting in 2015. Just like with any new venture, the early days of getting the business up and running were no easy task, but after putting in the work to develop his business plan,

Villanueva decided to, in his words, “leave it in God’s hands.” In that time, he felt that the Lord showed him the path to take with his business and is grateful “for the blessing to be successful in this part of my life’s journey so far.” In keeping with tradition, with family as the center of his business, Villanueva is proud to say that his company is family-owned and operated. DIGGING DEEP INTO JORDAN DAVIS' HIT 'BUY DIRT'

98

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY UMG NASHVILLE

ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE

A SENTIMENT ALL ABOUT HOME

I NSP IR E D BY | ARTS + CULTURE

It’s often said that country music is three chords and the truth. When listeners can connect with the stories, emotions, and experiences in the lyrics of a song, that’s when the magic happens. For country artist and songwriter Jordan Davis, it was a song about the importance of planting roots that connected with audiences in an authentic way and took his career to the next level, landing him his first CMA Award for Song of the Year. “Buy Dirt,” the song that has been so big for Davis’ career as an artist, was even more special because it was co-written with not only his own brother Jacob Davis, but another pair of songwriting brothers, Josh and Matt Jenkins. The song depicts the narrative of a wise older man on the cusp of his 80th birthday, giving advice to someone younger who may not have their priorities in the right place. Encouraging

them as only someone with years of life experience can, to not place so much importance on accumulating wealth and climbing corporate ladders that they let the things that really matter like family, faith, and pursuing your passions fall to the wayside. “Buy Dirt,” as the song’s chorus shares, gives sage advice about finding a sense of home and a deeply-rooted connection, not only in a physical place but also in people and in doing the things you love. The four songwriters shared in an exclusive American Songwriter video that “Buy Dirt” was one of those rare songs that came to them quickly within about 30 minutes and they knew instantly that it was special. “Sometimes those are the best songs,” shared Matt Jenkins. “When you almost feel like they are there waiting to be written, just for you to pick up the pen and start writing it.” “Well, they’re 100% a gift,” added Jacob Davis. “I think they’re a gift from the Lord, man. We’ve talked about that since we wrote that song. There was something about that morning.” When working on the demo a few days after writing it, Josh Jenkins knew there was something different about the song. “[All] I know is every time I listen to this song I feel like the hairs on my arm stand up,” Josh Jenkins remembered telling his brother. “I don’t know what this means, but there’s something special.”

Photo from Instagram

At the 2022 CMA Awards this past November, the four brothers took home the award for Song of the Year, which was a first CMA Award win for all four songwriters. The award, which goes to the songwriters rather than the artist—however in this scenario with Jordan being both—is one of the most prestigious awards in the country genre for songwriters. To win would be a monumental moment for any songwriter, but to win with your brother is a unique event that not many people get to experience. Jordan Davis said the win was unexpected when the four songwriters got up onstage to receive the award. 'We wrote a song about faith and family, and if that’s not country music, I don’t know what is!,' he said in his acceptance speech. The song, which features country superstar Luke Bryan, became the title track for Jordan Davis’ album in 2021. The values and sentiment of the poignant song connected so deeply with listeners that Davis decided to include it as the closing track of his most recent album "Bluebird Days," which was recently released last month. The 17-song album includes multiple tracks written by both the Davis and Jenkins brothers, “Tucson Too Late” and “One Beer In Front Or The Other.” JordanDavisOfficial.com

ON AIR WITH SUZANNE ALEXANDER How to Persevere in Nashville’s Booming Music Industry

Growing up on Long Island, Suzanne Alexander stood out from her peers thanks to her love for all things country. “I used to listen to American Country Countdown on the radio all the time and record it on my cassette on my boom box,” Suzanne recalls. “I was just obsessed.” A childhood steeped in country radio sparked Suzanne’s early interest in broadcast, one that ultimately led her to a tenured career spanning the best of the west: from country music to western sports and agriculture. “I couldn’t sing, I couldn’t write, I was just obsessed with music and said, ‘I can talk about it,’” Suzanne shares. Suzanne’s broadcast career began on Long Island with an afternoon country music show, which afforded her introductions with record labels and artists that turned to friendships. Ultimately, Suzanne made her way to Nashville to continue pursuing her dreams. What she didn’t know, however, was that her career would soon evolve from the radio waves to the TV screen. “TV came later for me,” she says. “When I was doing radio in Nashville, a friend of mine said Great American Country (GAC)

needed someone to host a special. I didn’t do TV, but I said, ‘Ok, I’ll try.’ I was bit by the bug to do country music broadcasting in a different medium.” GAC became Suzanne’s broadcast home for many years, leading her beyond country music and into the world of rodeo. She traveled all across the country covering the professional and championship bull riding circuits, and when the broadcast was ultimately moved from GAC to CBS Sports, Suzanne made the switch. One defining moment (among many) came during the National Finals Rodeo, when allaround world champion Tuf Cooper took matters into his own hands mid-interview. “In my ear, they always say don’t let go of the microphone because we’re live on television,” Suzanne recalls. “Tuf Cooper comes up, because he wins again, and he’s trying to grab the microphone. Finally, I acquiesce, and he gets down on one knee.” He proposed to his girlfriend seated in the audience. “That actually went viral,” Suzanne laughed. While having a front row seat to a championship athlete’s proposal was surely memorable,

Suzanne’s career has also allowed her to interview some of the world’s biggest stars: Kevin Costner, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, the list goes on. “GAC once did a show called 'Shortcuts,' and we interviewed a young girl from Hendersonville High School,” Suzanne shares. “I saw this beautiful young blonde-haired girl coming down the red carpet [of the ACMs] with her mom, and I gave her first interview at an award show live.” It was Taylor Swift, who would go on to win more than 500 awards (and do likely as many interviews) to date. Suzanne’s career has been defined by resilience, perseverance and a commitment to never stop learning. Where she once recorded the American Country Countdown on cassettes, she now not only writes the show, but fills in on air for her friend, Kix Brooks, when needed. “Here’s the thing,” Suzanne says. “When they came to me and said GAC needed somebody to host a TV special, and I hadn’t done TV, I said yes. When you master a way to communicate, or whatever your job is, you get really good at THAT thing. You can then adapt and evolve as you go on to another position. Even if you think that’s out of your wheelhouse, don’t say no and take yourself out of your comfort zone. You never know what that opportunity will lead to.” Years of saying yes, working hard and taking chances has landed Suzanne at RFD-TV’s Nashville studio, a television station dedicated to rural issues. “My love of rural America, country music and rodeo all seems to wrap up with what I do at RFD-TV,” Suzanne says. “There were things I had to learn. It was baptism by fire, and I still have mess ups, but I study, I prep, and it’s been amazing.” Follow along with Suzanne as she sheds light on rural America, agriculture and more, occasionally with the help of her friends in country music, on RFD-TV and on Instagram, @Suzanne_Alexander.

A S K T H E E X P E R T: MOVE MANAGEMENT SERVICES Moving? Remodeling? Renovating? A Fresh Space will make your life easier!

Let’s face it, life can be stressful - even more so if you are living through a remodeling project, a home renovation, relocating your office, considering moving to a new home or are still fumbling through boxes from your last move. For the average homeowner, living through these experiences without feeling frustrated, overwhelmed or exhausted can seem like an impossible task. Franklin Lifestyle spoke with A Fresh Space (AFS) founder, Liz Jenkins, to learn how the AFS team of professional organizers makes the tough task of living through a remodel, renovation or a move easier.

FRANKLIN LIFESTYLE (FL): HOW DID A FRESH SPACE GET ITS START? LIZ JENKINS (LJ): In early 2005 I read a book on organizing and thought ‘People do this for a living? And get paid for it?’ I have been organizing my whole life. I knew my talents and strengths would lend themselves beautifully to this industry so I jumped in. In addition to organizing, AFS provides full service move management and unpacking services.

FL: WHAT IS MOVE MANAGEMENT? LJ: Our highly detail-oriented team of experts manages the process of a move in an organized and efficient manner that encompasses move prep, the move itself, and the unpacking plus everything in between. Our team is different from movers. We help declutter before the move so you are only moving what you want or need. We manage the entire move process from start to finish with move oversight, coordinating the movers and other services, plus

our amazing unpacking service which includes unpacking items quickly and efficiently. The A Fresh Space move management team prides itself on helping you get there without all the stress.

FL: TELL US ABOUT THE AFS TEAM. LJ: Almost two decades since the start of AFS, we have grown to a professional team of 25. Five team members have been working alongside me for seven to 12 years. I am proud to say our team and culture can’t be beat. Everyone steps in and everyone steps up! The feedback from our clients always includes the words 'kind,' 'hard working,' 'amazing,' and the like. My team is truly amazing and I am blessed to have them as part of the company and as my family.

FL: HOW CAN AFS HELP BEFORE A MOVE OR WHEN MOVING OUT OF A HOME? LJ: Specializing in relocation clients as well as local moves, the AFS process has been thoroughly refined - coordinating everything from start to finish with stepby-step guidance and support. If you are moving out of your home, AFS will sort, edit, declutter, contain and label the contents of your home. We don’t just declutter to make something pretty, we are looking down the road for the next phase of the project. If needed, we add multi-functional products that are easily transferable to your new space. We also make arrangements for clients to donate or sell furniture, donate or consign clothing and baby gear and our team of handymen can make repairs if necessary. Specialty services are our thing and our vendors can crate and pack specialty items such as art, crystal, chandeliers, pianos, pool tables and more. We even have a wine shipper! With our move oversight, our team makes sure that the process is efficient, the movers have guidance and direction, your trash isn't packed, things are labeled properly, lamps and shades arrive together, the parts for your bed remain with your bed and they even complete a final check for things often forgotten in a move like the dishwasher, dryer, etc.

Liz Jenkins (second from left) pictured with members of her team.

“Our professional unpacking team sets up your home quickly and eff iciently while making it look amazing! From the f irst day in your new home, you will feel as though you’ve been living there for years.” FL: HOW CAN AFS HELP WITH MOVING INTO A NEW HOME? LJ: Unlike most unpacking services, our organizing professionals meet the movers, check that everything was delivered, unpack all boxes (including disposing of packaging materials), organize, and focus on creating zones, systems, and spaces for all of your items. We have babyproofers, professional installers to hang televisions and high-end art installers. In utilizing the perfect organizing materials for every space, we make sure your house is a home in three to four days instead of three to four years. Our services allow you to settle in and live in your home immediately with an Instagram-worthy space that functions perfectly for you and your family. CONTINUED >

“After your big move, our team will leave you with beautiful, organized spaces so you can hit the ground running and get back to your regular schedule.”

FL: WHAT OTHER MOVE MANAGEMENT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? LJ: For people staying in their homes during remodeling or renovation projects, our team steps in at the beginning to declutter spaces, handle the logistics of packing, create temporary living spaces and find creative storage solutions. Once a remodel or renovation is complete, we coordinate the move back into the new space then get everything unpacked and organized into the new space - making sure every space functions perfectly.

FL: WHY IS MOVE MANAGEMENT IMPORTANT? CAN’T I JUST DO IT MYSELF? LJ: Of course, you can do it yourself, however our services allow you to focus on the important stuff - from getting kids settled in school, meeting neighbors, to starting that new job. Moving entails a lot of moving pieces and AFS move management is such a time saver for homeowners. When using our move management services, moving won’t get in the way of living your daily life!

LEAVE NO TRACE Find Quiet Beauty at the Alvord Desert ARTICLE BY DONNA BURKLO PHOTOGRAPHY BY DONNA BURKLO AND GARY CALICOTT

The Alvord Desert is simultaneously simple and complex, stormy and calm, untouchable and embracing. It is a dry lakebed 12 miles long by seven miles wide located 260 miles southeast of Bend in the eastern shadow of the Steens Mountains. The desert never called out to me as it does for some. Friends told me that I was “missing out” when I didn’t join them at the Alvord for Burning Man-like weekends in the heat of the summer. It just didn’t seem like a place for me. It took the request of a quiet, introspective, gentle one to accompany him on an adventure to arguably his favorite place on Earth to get me to go. Through those eyes, I fell in love. At the Alvord playa, I found a dome of stars the likes of which I’d never seen. The Milky Way shone full length and breadth with incredible clarity. I found freedom – complete freedom – to walk and dance and sing knowing no one would scare me or judge me or bother me. I found silence. I found that the playa was never the same, yet always what I was looking forward to

at the end of a long drive. I learned to listen for the sound of the lakebed drying – to notice the wide variety of patterns each cycle of damp and parch would create. I learned to pick a reference point on the Steens or Tule Springs Rim when I went for mileslong headphones-on mind-cleansing walks lest I become completely disoriented in the wide open. My guide instilled in me a deep respect for the potential danger inherent in driving miles out into the middle of what is sometimes a shallow lake and most of the time a series of sun baked tiles. You can get impossibly stuck in the fine mud with no hope of a tow for hours and it’s often difficult to tell where solid ends and mud begins. For me these days, the Alvord Desert is a regular several-times-yearly pilgrimage. Sometimes I arrive and the playa is inaccessible due to its current wish to become a lake again. Sometimes I hope for the most glorious night under the stars and there is cloud cover. Sometimes I’m reminded that, even though I can, I ought not drive CONTINUED >

at top speed because of the fragile lives – human and animal – that I may disrupt. I’m always glad I made the trip. If you go, plan your trip around a stop at The Fields Station for gas, groceries, a burger and shake. Visit the Alvord Hot Springs, a spot for a wonderful soak with a killer view. Bring the kids to offer them a lesson in the power of nothingness. Let their senses acclimate to the pace and subtleties. The Steens are nearby for a completely different experience on a day trip. Bring along your common sense, your respect for nature and fellow humans, extra water, extra gas, your plan B, and, most importantly, your sense of wonder.

OFF THE SQUARE T H E AT R E C O M PA N Y KEEPS FRANKLIN E N T E R TA I N E D ARTICLE BY DAWN BURNS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Off the Square Theatre Company (OTSTC) has been entertaining the Franklin community for the past eight years. Shannon and Greg Pope, along with other like-minded families, founded OTSTC to create a Christ-centered musical theatre and arts company that delivers exceptional and entertaining productions. “We wanted to see generations of students become leaders who value excellence in artistic expression and work ethic, and who are inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit,” says Shannon Pope. Originally from the Raleigh, North Carolina area, the Pope family has lived near downtown Franklin for 20 years. The Popes have eight children who have all been involved in community theatre productions before OTSTC was founded. The Popes say they wanted to give their own children as well as other students a “challenging and rewarding outlet for their talents.” Over the years, all of the Pope children have held various roles in productions, such as costume design, building sets and marketing for the shows. The company has had a few homes in Franklin including Mockingbird Theatre and Generations Church. When the Williamson County Performing Arts Center at Academy

Park opened, OTSTC was invited to hold the venue's first production and has been based there ever since. The theatre group caters to families and engages audiences through song, dance, acting and visual storytelling. Greg Pope says he knows that they’ve delivered an excellent performance when a fellow Dad approached him after a show to say he felt he was being dragged to “another high school theatre performance” and was instead blown away by the energy, creativity and vibrance of the performance. The Popes did not expect their theatre to grow into the close-knit community that it has become. “The kids love the OTSTC community as much as they love the shows we do,” states Greg. It is not unusual for former cast members who have graduated or are in college to return to be a part of productions. Past shows have included Matilda, The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins and most recently, Willy Wonka. OTSTC is currently in the planning stages for its next production with details coming soon. USE THE RIGHT SOIL

Different flowers have different soil requirements. Make sure you check what soil will fit your plants' needs best.

SUN AND WATER REQUIREMENTS

Look at the location of the flower beds. Is it in a sunny area or a shady area? Depending, make sure you choose flowers that will thrive in that area.

INCLUDE A FOCAL POINT

Create a centerpiece with some fun decor. You can use a bird bath, fountain, or even an antique wagon filled with more flowers.

LOVE YOUR LAZY LAWN An easy way to help the ecosystem

Give some thought to this. Almost all US fruit and grain crops depend on pollination, yet our insect population has declined by 75% in the last 25 years - and most pollinators are insects. Fortunately, keeping pollinators (and our local farms) alive couldn’t be easier. Just get lazy about your lawn! Lawns mowed every two weeks offer more food for pollinators than lawns mowed weekly. So, while you’re lounging on the couch every other Saturday, your longer grass will be supporting American food systems. As a bonus, longer lawns also need less water, so being lazy saves you money, too. Perfect lawns are literally the empty calories of the ecosystem. By letting go of that green-carpet ideal, you’ll add color to your landscape by allowing dandelions, violets, and white clover to decorate your grass. More important, these “weeds” feed pollinators which, in turn, feed us. Here’s one more way being lazy can save the world: skip the pesticides. Pesticides kill pollinators, and they’re hardly health food for humans, birds, and pets, either. In fact, research shows that when bees visit plants treated with neonicotinoids (a chemical in most pesticides), even small amounts can build up over time and kill the hive. Neonicotinoids disorient bees and disrupt their fertility. Worse, they can linger in plants and pollen for 2-4 years. So be a hero. Stay in bed this weekend and stop fussing over your lawn. Holly Consults Answers Your Burning Landscape Questions

ARTICLE BY HOLLY CONSULTS | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED WHAT CAUSED SO MUCH PLANT DEATH THIS WINTER? The pre-Christmas sudden drop in temperatures—around 50 degrees over twelve hours or less—combined with the duration of below zero hours created a flash freeze. Put simply, water in plant leaves crystallized, damaging cells and, potentially, woody tissue. It was an unusual weather occurrence, but not unique. There may be, probably is, good and bad news in all the brown we see right now. The good news is that some familiar broadleaf evergreens that look dead today may renew after leaf drop. Others may need to be pruned back to live wood, meaning a reduction in height (maybe even to the mulch line) but no long-term harm. The bad news is that we likely do have some plant death out there, perhaps a significant amount.

WHAT SHOULD WE BE DOING NOW TO HELP OUR GARDENS RECOVER? The unsatisfying answer here is to be patient. It’s still winter, of course, and we don’t yet have a good read on what

plant recovery or failure will look like. That said, ordinary late winter/early spring tasks like deadheading herbaceous plants should still be on your gardening calendar. If you have essential plants—say for screening—and want to get a quick diagnosis of health, bend a small branch. If it’s pliable, that’s a good sign. From there make a shallow scratch below the bark. If you see green, the wood’s vernal. That’s great, but we won’t have a certain read on vigor until May, maybe later.

HOW DO WE AVOID THE RECURRING EXPENSES OF PLANT DEATH? Of course, extreme weather circumstances are out of our control. What we can do is make smarter choices. Engage with landscape architects or professional horticulturalists for plant selections. Choose native plants. Have a written maintenance calendar and hire qualified gardeners to work in the gardens. We can help with the calendar as well as periodic inspections.
