“Justin is the best. You could not ask for a more knowledgeable estate attorney. He helped my father with his will and trust. We just finished my will and trust. He listens to everything you have to say, then comes up with a way to incorporate your needs and wants into legal terms. Thank you so much Justin. It was and is a pleasure to know you.” --Janis, Thompson Station, TN resident

We can all probably think of a man in our life who has had a big impact on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, or someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or perhaps someone we don’t personally know but who inspires us by their greatness, we can recognize the impact these role models can make in our lives. This month we are honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community. We are highlighting talented men like 2021 CMT New Artist of the Year, Jimmie Allen, country singer and TikTok star, Cooper Alan, and singer-songwriter Anthony Smith. We shine a light on creative men like Franklin’s own “metal-morphosists” Kris Nethercutt, and “Franklin’s Best Dressed Man”, Isaac Ferguson Dillard. Be sure to read about our featured local men including Andrew Soss of Franklin Direct Mortgage as he shares his wisdom on the state of the current real estate market, David Crabtree who provides insight on the benefits of owning a business, and cosmetic dentist, Dr. Matt Kasiar who shares the results of the second annual “Second Chance Smiles” makeover. We reminisce about the great contributions of Jimmy Gentry to our community. We highlight the vast offerings at Barrels and Brews newest Franklin location, showcase the great event and music venue, Graystone Quarry and FirstBank Amphitheater and, as usual, give you a look at some of the people and places that make Franklin so special. We would like to thank all the men who work hard and inspire others to do the same. To all of the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you are making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it. Warmly,
Whitney Lockhart LAYOUT DESIGNER

Locally owned and operated spirits, beer, and wine retailer Barrels & Brews has hit the ground running since the grand opening of their Franklin store two months ago. Located in the former Shoney’s building on Murfreesboro Road, Barrels & Brews officially opened last November, but due to pandemic-related supply and staffing issues, they celebrated their grand opening two months ago, complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Barrels & Brews opened its first Williamson County location in Nolensville in 2019. Business there was booming and several store patrons inquired about the possibility of the store opening a second location across town. Barrels & Brews President Vru Surati notes that the site for the Franklin store was chosen because of its good location and the high volume of traffic and people who frequent the area every day. Says Vru, “Most people who hear about us only know us as a store that sells great whiskey. But we also offer a large selection of craft beer and wine and have a 12-tap growler system with a rotation of seasonal beers, all of which can be tasted before you buy." "Our store offers a look and feel unlike any wine and spirits store in Tennessee. We want an inviting and laid-back atmosphere for our customers to shop in,” adds Vru. “We speak to every customer who walks into our shop as we want to educate them and

help in the selection process. You may notice we do not have any signage in the store as it pertains to product location, which helps us to interact with customers when they are looking for products. Oftentimes we are able to educate them on products and give recommendations based on our conversation. We also have products available to taste so the customer knows exactly what they are getting.” The stores feature a variety of hand-selected single-barrel bourbons, whiskeys, and other spirits. Vru explains that a single barrel is a spirit aged and bottled from one barrel, with each barrel offering a unique tasting profile, color, and nose. Three single-barrel spirits he notes as patron favorites are Blue Note, Barrels & Brews - Private Label Single Barrel, and Whistle Pig 10 yr. Barrels & Brews is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 9 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Folks can also schedule a private tasting experience by emailing Vru at barrelsvs@gmail.com. So whether you’re looking for a specialty curated libation, craft beer suggestions, or a nice bottle of wine to accompany dinner, the knowledgeable and helpful folks at Barrels & Brews are there to assist you. A visit to Barrels & Brews is guaranteed to keep your spirits up! Instagram: @barrelsandbrews Facebook: @thebarrelsandbrews

Back To Where It All
Began Jimmie Allen’s Journey to Country Stardom 38

ARTICLE BY LISA VALENTINE
Downtown Franklin is made up of many charming, memorable places, but for country artist Jimmie Allen, Puckett’s Grocery & Restaurant will always be a particularly special place that changed his life forever. During his days aspiring toward a career in music, Allen was working at a gym and was introduced by a coworker to songwriter Chris Caminiti, who happened to be hosting a songwriters’ round at Puckett’s and needed two more songwriters to fill the slots. Allen played the round and it was there that he met fellow songwriter Ash Bowers, who signed Allen to his first publishing deal only a week later. “The crazy thing is we were actually both fill-ins because he [Caminiti] had two people cancel,” remembers Allen. “I wasn’t supposed to be there, and neither was Ash. It was crazy.” While some could say playing the songwriters’ round that day was fate, Allen has spent his life chasing music and makes it a point to show up every chance he gets an opportunity in life. “You never know which opportunity will be the opportunity that you’ve been waiting for,” says Allen. For the now highly successful artist, music was always the dream. There was never a backup plan for the humble yet confident and driven Allen, who moved to Nashville in 2007 and signed his record deal in 2017. “People ask me, ‘Well Jimmie, did you ever think in a million years you’d be doing what you’re doing now?,’” shares Allen. “Yes, I did – that’s why I put the work in. Nobody puts the work in to fail. Plan B is a distraction from Plan A. It’s impossible to give the career everything you need when you’re splitting it between two. But I feel like if you believe in yourself, you should just go for it.” The 2021 ACM New Male Artist of the Year and CMA New Artist of the Year’s rise to fame may appear as an overnight success to some, but the multi-Platinum selling country artist has had this vision for years, planning down to the most specific details of what he wanted his career to look like, and has made it a point to stay true to himself and do things his way from the very beginning. “I have a binder. It’s in the attic in my house. I created it in 2011. So everything I’m doing now is a part of a plan,” he shares. “In 2011, I kind of wrote out a landscape of how I wanted my career to go and that’s what I’ve been doing." He’s accomplished so many of the steps he mapped out over a decade ago, from releasing singles and playing on national television to later hosting shows, winning country music awards, and even being nominated for a GRAMMY. While he has accomplished so much already, Allen is continuing to look at the endless possibilities the future holds for him. “The next plan that I’m working on now is a reality show. I’m working on sitcoms, CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM / F R A N KL I N

movies a clothing brand is next. There are two shoe companies that I’m talking to. I want to be the very first country artist with a sneaker deal,” he explains. “I’m trying to do everything. It’s been part of the plan. The kids’ book was in there, Broadway’s in there. I want to go to Broadway and do a show.” However, there’s one thing in his master plan that will surprise even his most avid fan. “I added bowling,” he reveals of his list. “I’m into bowling now. I feel like I’m at a place where I want to do things I love, and I love bowling.” For the artist and songwriter who has written his own children’s book called My Voice Is a Trumpet, served as Executive Music Producer for Netflix’s series "Titletown High," and even competed on ABC’s "Dancing with the Stars," Allen has always pursued his own unique path in life, which has proven to be the key to his success. “I feel like you have to think outside the box because every artist, we have the same goals. But everybody’s path to get there is completely different and you have to be open to trying new things. You have to be open to just not relying on the ‘standard’ way of doing things,” says Allen. Set to release on June 24, Allen’s new album Tulip Drive is full of sentimental
40

meaning. Personal stories and experiences are intricately woven throughout the album’s title and songs, especially the album’s first single “Down Home,” which is a touching, heartfelt letter to Allen’s late father. “My first album is called Mercury Lane, the street I grew up on. The second album Bettie James Gold Edition is named after my dad and my grandma,” explains the Delaware native. “This album’s called Tulip Drive, named after the street my grandma lived on in Delaware. It’s the first album where I’m writing a lot of personal songs. I actually wanted to do this album [where] everything is based off of a moment in my life. The music’s changing, but it’s still me. You have some country stuff, some country-country stuff, some pop-country stuff, some rock leaning stuff, some pop leaning stuff, some R&B leaning stuff, but the stories are still there. It’s still me. The same kind of music I made on Mercury Lane is the same stuff I’m making now – just a lot more mature; situations are different, the instrumentation might change a little bit in and out to keep it fresh. I’d say it’s just more me.” With all of the projects Allen has excelled in, the “Down Home” singer and father of three knows that at the end of the
day, it’s doing what he loves and being with who he loves that’s the most important. “It’s been really cool getting a chance to do a lot of different things, and getting recognition for it is cool, but the best part is getting to do what I love and provide for my family,” says Allen. “I want my legacy to be someone who cared about other people. Someone who made music he could be proud of, that his kids and wife would be proud of, and just someone [who] always looked for ways to be better.” When asked if he could go back to the beginning of his career and tell himself one thing knowing everything he knows now, Allen’s answer is quite simple. “Keep going. You’re doing everything right,” he states. “I don’t have any regrets. I don’t wish a record deal would’ve come sooner because I wouldn’t have been ready. There’s so much I learned when I was trying to learn the business before I got a deal. I learned about publishing, how to read different kinds of contracts, booking agencies, business management, PROs, trying to understand things like merchandise, marketing, and really understanding the business. I wouldn’t change anything. I would just tell him: ‘Keep going.’” JimmieAllenMusic.com

It would be a challenge to find two people more opposite than Franklin residents Eric Wilson and Tripp Abney. Eric excels at swimming while Tripp reports he sinks in water. Eric enjoys being part of Waves Inc. podcasts where he talks with people and informs them about the available programs, whereas Tripp tried it once and decided podcasts were not for him. Eric loves horses and horseback riding, Tripp not so much. Dogs are not Eric's favorite animal yet Tripp loves dogs, especially his nine week old puppy, Jasper. Eric enjoys Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas music. Tripp prefers "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." Eric is not a fisherman while Tripp is proud to have his official fishing license. Eric finds hockey games “too loud” while Tripp loves to see the Preds play at Bridgestone Arena. Eric likes to take photographs. Tripp likes to challenge himself with 10,000 piece jigsaw puzzles. While Eric was a little apprehensive about being interviewed, Tripp was excited, and encouraged Eric stating “You got this. Just watch me.” You see where this is going, right? Despite their differences, these two men have formed a strong friendship and unbreakable bond. While opposites in so many ways, there is a similarity in their innocence and genuine desire to do their best and to bring out the best in each other. They both enjoy their jobs at Publix, with Eric proudly stating he has worked there for 11 years. Tripp adds his favorite day to work is senior citizen day because “They are my favorite customers.” Eric is currently training to represent Williamson County in the Special Olympics State Games in powerlifting. He currently deadlifts 315 pounds! Later this month, he will travel to Orlando, Florida to represent Tennessee in the Special Olympics USA Games in swimming. Eric is a talented multi-sport athlete, including a black diamond alpine skier and snowboarder. Eric also participates in AbleVoices, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides photography programs for individuals with disabilities as a means for self-expression, empowerment, and advocacy. Eric was proud to share his recent photos and is currently learning how to shoot angles. Tripp is also a talented multi-sport athlete. Having competed in basketball and flag football, Tripp and his dad, Joey, were the 2013 Special Olympics North America Golf Champions. When asked how he became such a great golfer, Tripp replied “I have to practice a lot.” When asked if he ever hit a hole in one, Tripp humorously replied, “That is why you bring two pairs of pants - in case you get a hole in one.” Tripp enjoys talking about Santa Claus CONTINUED > JUNE 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . and his buddy, Tyler Augusty, from the Best Buddies program. Tripp and Tyler just celebrated their 10-year buddy anniversary. Says Tyler, “Tripp is the most affable guy. We have a great time together. My children love Tripp and call him Uncle Buddy.” But Eric and Tripp are not so different that they cannot find a common ground. Each Friday, they dine out at their favorite Mexican restaurant. They both want to learn how to play pickleball, love Christmas, and dressing up as Santa for family and friends. They both enjoy attending Faith Friends at Brentwood Baptist Church each week. Wherever they are, it is not uncommon for them to be stopped multiple times to be greeted by locals - and they love it! So if you see them around town, be sure to say hi. Just don’t expect to get a secret handshake. That is a secret shared just between these two best friends.

This is the second year the generous Aldeans, their charitable organization Second Chance Smiles, and Dr. Matt Kasiar have joined forces to give the ultimate smile and glam makeover worth over $60,000 to one lucky person. That lucky person? Neal Price. Neal lives in Conroe, Texas with his wife and son where he works doing civil construction. His wife, Morgan, follows Brittany Aldean on Instagram and was the one who discovered the giveaway. It took a lot of encouragement for Neal to make the video. He explains, “I would avoid having conversations with people, so that way they couldn’t see my teeth. Or if I had to talk with someone, I would try to look away or keep my lips to where my teeth weren’t showing.” Neal’s grateful Morgan finally convinced him to submit a video just before the deadline. Dr. Kasiar and Brittany were excited to see more men enter the contest this year. After watching so many heart-wrenching videos, it was ultimately Neal’s vulnerability and kindness that stood out to them. Brittany says, “In my experience, I know it’s extremely hard for a man to submit something like that. It’s difficult for someone to be real and raw knowing people would be watching that video. It wasn’t planned to pick a man this year, but it was based off of a gut feeling and seeing how passionately he wanted a new smile and how much he knew it was going to affect his life.” Brittany and Jason called Neal with the news as he and his family were at a restaurant getting seated for dinner. His family was full of anticipation as they had been praying for this
every day. Neal admits, “I don’t even remember what I said. I was so shocked and nervous.” He was about to get the smile of his dreams. Dr. Matt Kasiar is the cosmetic dentist at The Practice in Franklin who designed Neal’s teeth. He says, “In Neal’s case, a lot of the teeth were in bad shape and had to go, so by the time we were looking at the remaining teeth, there wasn’t a lot to work with. We opted to remove the rest of them and place seven implants on his top and seven implants on the bottom.” Neal was in surgery for eight hours, but everything went perfectly. Neal made the final reveal to his friends and family in May and was almost unrecognizable! To complete the makeover, he had his hair done by Travis Mitchell from The Parker House salon and received a new wardrobe and styling by fashion expert Chérie Kilchrist. Everyone hopes that this transformation opens up new opportunities and relationships for Neal. Many people don’t realize how life-changing new teeth can be. Before the makeover, Neal was socially awkward and would try his best to hide his teeth. Now Neal is coming out of his shell and shows off his bright white smile everywhere he goes. Neal says, “I always try to be the best person and father I can be, but if anything, it’ll help me get better. I can feel my confidence changing every day and I’m definitely very blessed.” After the success and gratification of the past two contests, Brittany is optimistic about continuing these smile makeovers for years to come.

Isaac Ferguson Dillard He has performed for Diana Ross' family New Year’s Eve party, President George H. W. Bush, and at Congressman John Robert Lewis’ funeral service at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King served as pastor from 1960-1968. Isaac says, “Covid shut down my work, so I relocated to Franklin without knowing who and what Franklin was all about. I simply relocated following the voice of my heart and the voice of God. I must say, those voices haven't disappointed me. I refer to Franklin as my promised land.” Designing clothes (IFD Collection) began as another creative outlet. He began designing clothes for himself and shortly after people began to resonate with his style and brand. “I must say since moving to Franklin, people literally stop me, compliment me on what I'm wearing, and some actually ask me if they can take my photo. I am humbled by the accolades of my Franklin family. My @ifd_collection was birthed because of the people of Franklin connecting, resonating, and purchasing what I walk down the street wearing, from Kathie Lee Glifford, relatives of Kitty Wells, Luke Smallbone of For King and Country, Need to Breath’s Bear Rienhart, and so many others." MUSIC THAT CAPTIVATES WHETHER ON STAGE OR IN THE STUDIO, THIS TALENTED ARTIST PULLS LISTENERS INTO HIS SONGS Anthony Smith has always been drawn to music. As soon as he was able to pick up a guitar, he started playing. Later on, he would sing in his church choir. “From there it progressed, and I was playing in church bands.” he says. “Music was like a magnet.” Today, Anthony, who lives in Nashville, is a wellknown singer, songwriter and record producer. His debut album, "If That Ain’t Country," on Mercury Records Nashville, featured three Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. Most of his music, though, has been created for other big-name recording artists. He has written over 250 songs for various artists such as Blake Shelton, Faith Hill, George Strait, Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts, and Montgomery Gentry. “Most of the time, I just pitch a song to them, and after that they may either decide to use it or they’ll come back and ask if I can write another one like it,” says Anthony. Some of his most notable lyrics include "Cowboys Like Us" performed by Blake Shelton, "Run" by George Strait and "My Worst Fear" by Rascal Flatts. With his unique style of songwriting, listening to each rendition of his music evokes strong emotions and captivating visuals. Anthony has won many impressive awards from Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), as well as the prestigious Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year award by Music Row magazine. His love of performing keeps him on the road a good part of the year. “I still do a lot of shows, about 50 to 60 a year, from Nashville to Florida,” he says. AnthonySmith.com

Kris with his latest sculpture, Luther
From Scrap to Sculpture HOW ONE LOCAL ARTIST UPCYCLES SALVAGED METAL
ARTICLE BY KATIE SHANDS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Some artists draw inspiration from nature or music, but self-described “metal-morphosist” Kris Nethercutt finds his muse in scrap metal. From castoff tractor seats and animal traps to rusted fenders and exhaust pipes, everything has the potential to be transformed into a whimsical sculpture when Nethercutt gets ahold of it. “If [a piece of metal] is an interesting shape, I save it until I see something in it,” he says. Thanks to that creative eye, Nethercutt has amassed an impressive collection of junk metal to work with, including 26,000 pounds of remnants from Union Station’s train shed that was torn down in 2000. He bought the scraps from the Tennessee Preservation Trust and even has a letter of authenticity to prove their historic value. Nethercutt has fashioned all sorts of conversation pieces, such as one-of-a-kind lamps and tables, from the shed’s remains.
“If [a piece of metal] is an interesting shape, I save it until I see something in it.” — Kris Nethercut t
His workshop is tucked in a quiet neighborhood behind the Williamson County Administrative Complex. You can’t miss his place—a buzzard made from a gas tank is perched on the mailbox, and a scrap-metal cannon sits in the yard. A gravel drive leads to the back of the house where you’ll find Nethercutt’s headquarters. The tin-roofed shed may look inauspicious, but it’s actually the birthplace of several Williamson County landmarks. Perhaps the most notable of those icons is “Rusty Mechanism,” the 20-foot-tall, metal man outside of The Factory at Franklin, an industrial complex that’s been transformed into a shopping and dining destination. Nethercutt spent six years crafting Rusty from old machine parts that were pulled from the depression-era buildings during renovations. He even engineered Rusty to have an interactive component—if you turn the left thumb, the massive head moves side-to-side. Officially titled “Clocking Out,” the sculpture represents a factory worker who is leaving his job for the last time. “He’s a tribute to American industry, a way of life that’s a part of our heritage,” Nethercutt says. His latest project is another 20-foot-tall masterpiece, but instead of a factory worker, it’s a farmer in overalls and a straw hat. The ears are formed from two halves of a tractor seat, the mustache and hair are the tines of a rake, and the overall buttons are radiator caps. Sheet metal and other salvaged bits comprise the rest of the body. The former chairman of Dollar General, Cal Turner, Jr., commissioned the sculpture in honor of his grandfather, Luther, who was a farmer. When Turner’s assistant called with the proposition, Nethercutt agreed without a moment’s hesitation. “I told him I’d been waiting for the phone to ring for thirteen years,” he says with a chuckle. “Yeah, I’ll do another one.” This summer, Luther will be installed next to Turner’s pavilion
in Brentwood at the site where his old barn fell down in a storm. Rusty and Luther may be the largest of Nethercutt’s creations, but he’s left his mark all over town in other significant ways. The Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County hired him to recreate a jail cell for tours in the basement of the Old, Old Jail, and upstairs, he installed two sliding doors made from weathered sheet metal. Nethercutt’s handiwork can also be seen at St. Andrew Lutheran Church on Murfreesboro Road. He built the massive, stainless-steel cross in the belltower, as well as the aluminum frame for the cross in the sanctuary. Travel a bit farther north on Murfreesboro Road, and you’ll find yet another Nethercutt invention—a bicycle fence with riders made of mufflers. This structure is a traveling art exhibit of sorts, making its way from Nethercutt’s yard to Leiper’s Fork, O’More College of Design, and now, the property next to Pinkerton Park. Nethercutt says his love of metalworking began at the age of 15 when he moved to Franklin from Indiana and took a welding class at Yates Vocation School. “Most of the guys were just goofing off and having fun. But I was the new kid. They weren’t my buddies. I had nothing better to do than to sit down and learn.” He went on to work as a welder and machinist at the former CPS Industries in Franklin and John Bouchard & Sons in Nashville. After 13 years in the industry, he struck out on his own in 1998 and established his business, K.A.L. Metal Products. His bread-and-butter is wrought-iron curtain rods and other decorative items, but lucky for us, he’s been able to create his eclectic sculptures on the side. Thanks to Nethercutt’s talent and ingenuity, Franklin has a bit more art and a lot less junk. A pretty fair trade, don’t you think? To find out more about Nethercutt’s services, call 615-790-4929 or visit his workshop at 408 South Petway Street.

Graystone Quarry & FirstBank Amphitheater: Diamonds in the Rough ARTICLE BY JESSICA WAYMAN | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
The abandoned site used to build part of Interstate 65 in the early 1960s, once full of litter and loiterers, is now home to Thompson’s Station’s Graystone Quarry and FirstBank Amphitheater – an event venue that dreams are made of and a music venue that’s unlike any other in the United States. Acres of sprawling beauty now surround the limestone quarry. Owners Rick and Nancy McEachern discovered the quarry as it sat full of abandoned car parts, tires, wires and, by night, some seedy visitors. They heard of crimes like car thieving rings and drug activity and even rumored tales of moonshiners and of train robbers staging horses there from long ago. Not a trace of that can be seen there today. After six months of clean-up, an estimated 900 tons of trash were pulled from the land, including 245 tires! Being good neighbors is important to the McEacherns, and the clean-up has been greatly appreciated. “This is a largely generational neighborhood, and we want them all to be proud and happy that we’re here and to be good neighbors to them,” said Nancy. Having built these magnificent venues from the rocks up, they have
kept the community as one of their greatest interests by using as many resources as possible from the quarry land and surrounding artisans and businesses. The property’s own eco-friendly water treatment plant was built on site which allows them to purify their own water. Cement culverts left in the quarry from the construction of the interstate were crushed to pave the roads throughout the property. Wood used to build different structures throughout the venues is all locally grown and milled by a family mill located in Williamson County. All stone found around the landscape and in the buildings came from the quarry itself. And to top it all off, the amphitheater is plastic-free. Anything tossed by visitors is either recyclable aluminum or compostable. The wholesomeness is matched only by the beauty and the quality. Graystone Quarry is an event space unlike any other. If historic homes and rustic barn weddings aren’t your style, maybe a wedding photo by a dazzling quarry pond with a romantic 20-foot waterfall will better suit you. You can start you day in luxurious bridal suit, tie the knot in the charming Hillside Pavilion, and celebrate

your special day with loved ones in the Gathering Hall which features a striking two-story fireplace and double staircase – all tucked into the romantic landscape of the quarry. Maybe this isn’t your year for a wedding, but it’s definitely the year for a concert at the world-class FirstBank Amphitheater. This season, FirstBank will host artists such as Steely Dan, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Willie Nelson & Family, just to name a few, having already welcomed Miranda Lambert and Halsey. Walking through the quarry, the amphitheater is almost unnoticeable until the sound and scenery suddenly open up before you. A concert in a quarry amphitheater is a stunning experience. Colored lighting wraps the rock walls of the amphitheater creating the ultimate concert mood lighting. Each of the 7,500 seats available offer a great viewof the stage and great sound. Cliffside suites include in-seat service and the use of a private bar, and concessions offer a wide range of elevated southern fare. Last but not least, the venue plans to widen the roads leading from Lewisburg Pike (TN-431) to the entrance of the amphitheater, reducing traffic and allowing for faster travel to and from the venue. New lanes should be complete midway through this year’s concert season. Don’t let the Franklin postal address confuse you – the location is actually Thompson’s Station land, but Graystone Quarry and FirstBank Amphitheater are proud to be a part of both communities. Planning With The Pros HOST EVENTS YOUR GUESTS WILL NEVER FORGET

When people in the Nashville area want to host an amazing event, they know to call in the professionals. After all, there are many details that have to be coordinated in order for everyone to have a great time. FADDS Events has talented event planners who can do this and more. Founded over 20 years ago by David Heimbach, FADDS is an offshoot of David’s entertainment enterprise. “I had the first party bus company in Nashville, and from there we morphed into a DJ service, and then the event planning business.” “It’s a one-stop shop with a great reputation,” says David. “We know a lot of people and can get customers what they want, not just what they need, at any given time by partnering with a lot of other vendors in town.”

David hires those who are skilled in their respective duties and who will represent the company to the best of their abilities. “That’s what makes our company click,” he says. Angela Mills is one of these employees. As the director of sales and marketing, she is often the first contact people have with FADDS Events. “Sometimes customers are not sure what their vision is, so we have to present a vision for them, and sometimes that's the big challenge,” she says. “We use our expertise to figure out what they want.” It’s critical, says Angela, to know exactly what they're looking for budget-wise in order to stay within that budget. The most popular and requested events are casino nights. “David is an entrepreneur who has built the inventory for our rentals,” she says. “He's so creative, and every game we rent has been built in-house.” All the wooden yard games, such as Jenga, ladder toss and corn hole, are all made in-house as well.
78

FADDS also provides inflatables and carnival games, and no event is too big or too small. Last fall, they did a huge carnival at the Governor's Mansion, but have also provided backyard games for get-togethers at people’s homes. Corporate events are in demand too, and they can design a myriad of fun team-building activities for employees. FADDS is also a family business. “I’ve been happily married for 27 years to Jodie and we have four kids, including triplets,” says David. “I had all of them working in the business at one time. They started when they were about 12 and went all the way through college.” One of the triplets, Mason, is still working alongside his dad as an event specialist. FaddsEvents.com

Zolo’s Family Zolo’s Italian Restaurant was a regular dining spot for Johnny Weber and his longtime friend and business partner Cam Harrington. Zolo’s has been in downtown Franklin for over 15 years. The location has always been a quaint Italian restaurant, originally named Antonio's and then Palazzolo’s and finally shortened to Zolo’s in 2007. When they noticed Zolo’s was closed last summer, Johnny called the previous owner and chef, Brian Holmes, to check in on him. Brian explained that he was ready to sell and Johnny instantly decided to buy it with a promise to continue serving their

beloved family recipes. Johnny had never owned a restaurant before, so he brought on Cam, who has been in the food industry for over 24 years. They also own the Juice Bar together off of 5th Avenue. Before reopening, Johnny and Cam worked hard to hire new line cooks, deep clean, and make some cosmetic renovations to enhance the restaurant, but keep the charm the community grew up with, such as the white and red checkered tablecloths. They collaborated with Brian to get all of the homemade recipes written down in detail, as he had them all memorized, so they could be recreated and passed down for generations to come. All of the classics from the chicken parmesan to lasagna are made to order and the bread is freshly baked locally. The Spicy Tortellini Diablo is a crowd favorite and Johnny’s go-to on the menu. Customers also love to start with calamari and the hand-breaded mozzarella sticks with a side of their incredible red sauce. Guests will enjoy a taste of Italy with every bite. Zolo’s hosts up to 50 people and the dim lighting and intimate atmosphere make for the perfect date night. The staff is always happy to give their wine recommendations to pair with the upscale take on Italian comfort food. Zolo’s remains family-owned and operated. Johnny has two sons, a 23- and 25-year-old who help in the restaurant. It’s important to him that they learn how to take care of people and run a successful business. Guests will also be greeted by Johnny’s father as you enter the restaurant. Johnny says, “It’s fun to see him at Juice Bar in the mornings and at Zolo’s at night. He opens the door for people as they come in or as they leave to make it that southern hospitality experience.” The family strives to make sure all of their customers receive excellent service. Cam says, “Having the Juice Bar and Zolo’s gives us a big footprint in downtown Franklin. The local business owners, neighbors, and tourists we meet on a day-to-day basis have been incredible.” They hope that all guests will leave feeling like part of the Zolo’s family.

SIZING UP NASHVILLE’S REAL ESTATE MARKET A NEWCOMER’S PERSPECTIVE ARTICLE BY ED ATLAS People moving to Middle Tennessee from many of America’s largest cities has continued largely unabated for more than a decade. And at this juncture, it seems that a happy medium has been reached. Newcomers enjoy the less hectic pace and lower cost of living while longtime residents marvel at the magnitude of growth and the byproducts that come with it. Namely, skyrocketing property values. None of this is lost on Andrew Soss of Franklin Direct Mortgage. In a little less than two years, he’s seen his firm’s business flourish as a direct result of the booming market. He’s also one of those new arrivals to the Nashville area, having relocated here from San Juan Capistrano, California in 2020. “I wanted to get out of California and move to Tennessee for all the same reasons everyone else does,” says Soss. “Greater freedom, no income tax, a better pace of life and a reasonable cost of living.” Franklin Direct Mortgage is not some clever name designed to appeal to search engine algorithms. It’s the actual name of a California-based firm that’s been in business for decades. Today it operates in 15 states with Soss leading the Tennessee division. “We’re growing quicker than I thought,” he says. “We focus on serving the real estate community directly and they, in turn, refer their clients to us.” Soss and his wife bought a house in The Grove where they raise their two children. By pure coincidence, his neighbor down the street is Brian Bogs, a real estate agent with whom he did business back in California. Bogs has since joined the Franklin Direct Mortgage team as a business development director. As a mortgage loan officer for 21 years, Soss acknowledges that the imbalance in terms of supply and demand makes the Nashville market particularly competitive. And while a correction is likely at some point, he says it is difficult to predict when that might occur. “We’re insulated because so many people want to move here,” says Soss. “That keeps demand up. And many of these buyers have extra cash on hand because they have sold homes for more than they are going to pay for their new one in Middle Tennessee. “Eventually it will taper off and drop a bit - it’s just difficult to know when. But in the meantime, people who own houses are reaping the benefits.” AndrewSoss.com

BUILDING A MUSICAL CAREER HIS OWN WAY TIKTOK LOVES COOPER ALAN
Country singer Cooper Alan has independently built a fanbase of over 8.5 million followers and has earned over 80 million streams on his music. How you ask? TikTok, the video-focused social networking app. Alan says, "It's wild. I'd been writing songs and developing my sound for a while. Then the pandemic hit and it gave me the opportunity to get on social media since there was really nothing to do! My girlfriend told me to get on TikTok, but I thought it was just kids dancing. But then things just started to work. I got more followers in a day from a viral video than I have from anything else. And it gives me the opportunity for a direct connection to fans." He explains, "The way it works for me is to drop singles. This year I will drop an album's worth of songs, but I do it one at a time with two weeks to a month in between. I let each song breathe. It's the nature of my platform. I like to get the fans super involved in every single song. I ask if they like a song. If they say yes, I put it out. If they say no, we'll throw it away for a little while." Well, it's working. Alan adds that he writes stuff that's real. "It has to speak to me. I like not taking myself too seriously and having fun with it," which is definitely a big part of his appeal. Originally from Winston-Salem, NC and now residing in Nashville, Alan loves to spend time in Franklin. He says he and his girlfriend, who most of his songs are about, are "suckers for Franklin." Copper is on tour all year. TikTok: cooperalan1

Moving Music Down the Highway Jon Long isn’t what you would call a ramblin’ man, and he’s not exactly running down the road trying to loosen his load. As a matter of fact, he keeps it pretty tight as the tour bus driver for Dierks Bentley and other big-name artists because he’s the one responsible for keeping the music moving from town to town. A Spring Hill resident of twenty years, Jon drove trucks for two decades before a neighbor and friend, Glenn Dustin of southern gospel group Legacy Five, having driven tour buses himself, talked him into shifting gears. It’s not an easy gig to break into. To earn his credentials, Jon had to drive for a short time as a Williamson County school bus driver. Soon, he would start getting seat time with acts like Devin Dawson and Colt Ford. Friends on the road like Mark Banks, driver for Lee Greenwood, showed him the ropes on how to operate tour buses. Once he got his feet wet and was driving crew buses for acts like Little Big Town, he got his next big break. Andrew Morton, lead driver for Dierks Bentley, hired him on as the driver for the band, and he’s been driving Dierks’ bus for six years now. When he’s not on tour with Dierks, he gets to drive for other artists such as Lady A, Maren Morris, Miranda Lambert, Clint Black, Chris Stapleton, Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, and, of course, a gritty little band known as the Hot Country Knights. Jon catches most shows still in rehearsals when he’s not
sleeping, but it beats waiting for tickets to go on sale any day. “I get to meet all kinds of cool people. I haven’t met anybody yet artist-wise, band or crew that hasn’t been nice. They’re all pretty laid back and easy going,” said Jon. While there’s plenty fun to be had, driving a tour bus is serious business, and Jon is responsible for the bus and all its passengers while they’re on the road. “You drive differently than a tractor trailer because there are people on board, and your center of gravity is higher, so you have to drive slow on your ramps and slow on your curves,” Jon explained. A big tour like Dierks Bentley’s can travel with something close to eight buses and nine trailers. Tours leave out of a town and drive all night to get to the next one. When they get to the venue the next morning, the drivers park the buses and get them all cleaned up and ready to go back out that night. Jon goes to sleep about 3:00 pm, then he wakes up at midnight, picks everyone up back at the venue, and they head back out into the night to do it all again the next day. Jon says you can’t beat it. In a sense, he gets paid to travel, and that’s his favorite part. He’s traveled with artists from north to south, east to west. On days off while on tour, he takes the opportunities to go out and tour some cities for himself. “I’ve been all over the U.S., all over Canada, and it never gets old,” said Jon.

THE BENEFITS OF OWNING A BUSINESS If you own a business, large or small, providing an attractive benefits package is one of the keys to retaining great employees. The trick is finding plans that are not only affordable but offer meaningful protection. That’s where David Crabtree of Crabtree Benefits can be an invaluable resource. A former Franklin High School teacher, Crabtree enjoys the arduous task of making the complex understandable. In a recent conversation, he explained how his services make life better for you and your employees as well.
RIGHT TO THE POINT: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO FORM CRABTREE BENEFITS? Everything I’ve ever done has been oriented toward helping people. As a teacher, my passion was trying to help students not just grasp knowledge in the classroom but to help prepare them to be responsible young adults. Now it’s about being able to help people allay their fears of the unknown. That’s the protection that insurance provides.
IS THERE AN EXAMPLE OF HOW YOU’RE ABLE TO PROVIDE THAT LEVEL OF PEACE OF MIND? I’ve had people call and tell me they’ve been diagnosed with cancer and their fear of the financial burden is almost as great as their fear of the disease. It is gratifying to be able to explain how their treatment is going to be covered. When the anxiety over cost is removed, they’re able to focus on recovery. That’s why I go to work every day.
I want everyone to be taken care of the same way I want my family to be taken care of.
ARE SMALL BUSINESSES ABLE TO SECURE REASONABLE RATES? A lot of companies think that the more employees you have, the greater discount you’ll get. But that’s not necessarily the case. There are certain carriers that focus on larger groups while others focus on smaller groups. What I do is identify those carriers that are going to be suitable for the individual client. If you own a small business, even if it’s just a few employees, call me. There’s likely a plan available that makes sense for you.
SPEAKING OF BENEFITS, WHAT IS THE BENEFIT TO THE BUSINESS OWNER WHO CHOOSES TO WORK WITH YOU? First and foremost is service. I have a saying: ‘Friends don’t let friends call insurance carriers.’ What that means is I’m not going to come in, setup a benefits package and say, ‘See you next year at renewal.’ I’m going to help that business if there are any billing issues or questions. I work with employees too. Many of my clients’ employees call me directly. You’re not calling an 800 number - you’re calling me. Crabtree Benefits offers group benefits for businesses of all sizes. Products include medical, dental, vision, short- and long-term disability, critical care and life insurance. CrabtreeBenefits.com

Effortlessly Cool Men in Cool Jobs What makes a job ‘cool’? A subjective question with probably 100 different answers. For the purposes of this article, we’ll define a cool job as one that provides a fun topic of conversation. Almost everyone enjoys discussing fascinating, adventurous, out-of-the-ordinary, or impactful careers. These five men in cool jobs were all asked the same question: What advice would you give to people wanting to get started in your {respective} business?
Nick with Tanner Jeannot during a postgame interview earlier this season.

“It’s a cliché, but it’s one for a reason – diversifying your skillset and comfort zone can take you a long way, especially in professional sports. With PR, social media, reporting, digital media, marketing and so much more, there are almost always opportunities to chase, so see what you like doing and run with it. It’s as competitive an industry as any, but the people in it are willing to help; once you make those connections, follow up with tangible examples of what you are doing to get to where you want to be. Learning AP Style and the Adobe products will be a big-time help also!” 104

“First and foremost, follow your passion and share your brand’s authentic story. You can’t underestimate the amount of investment, not just monetary, but with personal hard work and sacrifice that it takes to launch a brand successfully, and the genuine passion that you have for your product that will carry you through the hard times.”
“Surround yourself with as many smart people and industry experts as you can and ask as many questions as you can. This industry, and especially this town, is unbelievably supportive. I am continually blown away by the encouragement and insight we get from other businesses in this industry. Those that most people would consider to be our competition have actually become close friends and confidants, and their support and mentorship has been priceless to us.”

“I would encourage anyone trying to break into the sports industry to relentlessly follow your passion. Lots of people have a passion for sports. Know why and where you want a career in it and follow that passion. The business side of the sport is different from playing the sport. It might be creating fans for life, helping people make lasting memories, or just having a passion for building relationships, but do the research to know how your unique skills can add value to an organization. Then go prove it.”
“You should ask yourself: ‘Do I “want” to do this or do I “need” to do this? It kinda picks you. It’s a very tough business to break in to. If you do get in and are having hits on the radio, it’s awesome!! If you’re not, it’s scary. The smartest advice I can probably give is to have a Plan B. That being said, we moved here in 1994 with no jobs ... and no Plan B. But I can’t imagine doing anything else.”

A great celebration begins with the clinking of glasses and heartfelt cheers. Father’s Day is no exception. The men we celebrate are deserving of a special day to feel extra loved and appreciated. A classy cocktail served alongside good company and a hearty meal is just what this day calls for. In the words of David Wondrich, a foremost authority on cocktails, “A proper drink at the right time - one mixed with care and skill in the true spirit of hospitality - is better than any other made thing.” Shaken? Stirred? On the rocks? Blended? However they like their drinks, the men in your life should only have the best for their Father’s Day cheers. Here are three cocktails that are sure to be winners.
SAZERAC INGREDIENTS • 2 oz. Rye Whiskey • 1/4 oz. Absinthe (or Anise Liqueur) • 1 Sugar Cube • 3 Dashes Peychaud’s Bitters • Lemon Twist for Garnish

CLASSIC MARTINI Made notably famous by none other than the iconic movie character James Bond.
If you want to up the mixologist game, use a smoke infuser and burn wood chips to enhance the taste of the Old Fashioned and Sazerac. For the Classic Martini, consider using specialty olives stuffed with blue cheese, garlic or peppers. One day out of the year is simply not enough to express appreciation for all that fathers do day in and day out. They are a daughter’s first love and a boy’s first teammate. They are mentors and best friends. They work hard and love hard. And in good ole dad joke fashion, they’re the olive to our martini and mint to our mojito! To all the fathers and father figures out there, cheers to you! We hope you get to sit back, relax and enjoy a cocktail.

“I love you so much.” It’s one of Austin’s many remarkable and Instagrammable street murals but is also a love letter from locals and visitors alike who adore this “weird” and wonderful city in the South. The capital city of Texas is best known for having a personality of its own, one bursting with foodie and fashion finds, outdoor activities and “Austintatious” art creations, a booming sphere of pro sports experiences (we see you Formula 1 and Austin FC), and seven days a week of live music to boot. Did we mention it’s sunny nearly 300 days a year? It’s time to GET AWAY!
Photography Nathan Fluellen
This month, our City Lifestyle family of travel enthusiasts are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Austin to introduce an exclusively curated guide to this lively destination paired with a GIVEAWAY* opportunity to win a 2-night trip for two, with round trip airfare from American Airlines! Sunny most days of the year, Austin is recognized for a myriad of outdoor experiences which you can experience both in downtown Austin with scenic views of the skyline, as well as the surrounding area, including local treasure, Lady Bird Lake. When it comes to luxury accommodations, one of the most stunning hotels in Austin is the Commodore Perry Estate. This striking and historic property, once a 10,800-square-foot private mansion known to host Jazz era social extravaganzas, has been transformed into a modern and European-influenced spectacular resort now open to the public.
Austin is renowned for pleasing palates, with an exceptional restaurant scene, including barbecue and tacos as its true soul foods. Pair your tacos with queso and the must-have margaritas for an authentic Tex-Mex meal, or indulge in Austin’s quintessential barbecue. Austin’s slowcooked, fall-off-the-bone brisket is a mouth-watering experience not to miss. Beyond barbecue and Tex-Mex is an entire mix of palate pleasers, from upscale Mediterranean and Asian to James Beard award-winning eateries. Geraldine’s inside Hotel Van Zandt is one of Austin’s iconic Rainey Street destinations. Equal parts restaurant, bar, rooftop and live music venue, Geraldine’s overlooks beautiful Lady Bird Lake and offers 4th f loor cabanas, a nightly concert lineup and a chef’s contemporary menu. Jimmy Gentry HONORING A BELOVED COMMUNITY MAN
Franklin lost a beloved resident in April 2022. Jimmy Gentry was born in Franklin's Wyatt Hall on November 28, 1925 and was the seventh of eight children. His childhood was filled with hunting, fishing and trapping. After losing his brother David in World War II, he entered the war as a private in the army and served in 42 Rainbow Division in European front and was a liberator at the concentration camp Dachau. Following the war, Jimmy came back to Franklin and married his high school sweetheart Rebecca Channell and they had three sons. Jimmy began his coaching career before he even graduated from college when the Franklin High School principal asked him if he would be interested in coaching the football team. Soon after graduating from Peabody College he started teaching at Franklin as well. In the early

1960s he moved to Battle Ground Academy to teach biology and coach and ended his career at Brentwood Academy teaching Tennessee History and coaching football. Many students remember his chalk drawings of funny fish and other diagrams which made his class a favorite. He coached over 10 state championship football programs in his lifetime. During his retirement, Jimmy enjoyed raising strawberries and continued to volunteer coach several local teams. Jimmy also enjoyed speaking to groups all over the country, telling of his WW II experiences. He continued to run his summer day camp at Franklin's Gentry Farm until he was in his 80s and always loved seeing the children visit the farm for field trips. Franklin Lifestyle honors the legacy and memory of a man who brought so much joy to our community.
