NASHVILLE BALLET ANNOUNCES THE 2021-22 SEASON Nashville Ballet is thrilled to announce their 2021-22 season, featuring a sensational lineup of in-theater performances and new digital releases. Season highlights include fantastical family-favorites Peter Pan and Nashville’s Nutcracker at TPAC, iconic contemporary works, Nashville Ballet’s debut performance at the brand new Belmont Performing Arts Center, and the highly-anticipated reprise of Vasterling’s nationally acclaimed Lucy Negro Redux. Lucy Negro Redux will open with a multi-weekend run in James K. Polk Theater at TPAC before embarking on a nationwide tour in the spring of 2022. A cross-disciplinary tour de force, Lucy Negro Redux tells the story of Shakespeare and his Dark Lady, the illusive subject of many of his sonnets and a role created for an exceptionally talented woman of color. Based on the book of poetry by local author Caroline Randall Williams, the ballet also features spoken word by Williams and an original score by GRAMMY Award-winningmarvel Rhiannon Giddens. Season packages for Nashville Ballet’s 2021-22 season as well as individual tickets can be purchased on Nashville Ballet’s website or through their Box Office at 615-297-2966 x710 or tickets@ nashvilleballet.com. GYM THAT CATERS TO CHILDREN WITH AUTISM & SPECIAL NEEDS TO OPEN FIRST LOCATION IN STATE OF TN We Rock the Spectrum Kid’s Gym announces its first location in Tennessee: Franklin. The new owners, Steven and Samantha Komarnitsky, have secured the new location at 113 Murfreesboro Road, Suite 203, Williamson Square. Construction will begin after August 7th for this recreational space that is the first of its kind in the state. The franchise’s mission is to provide an inclusive community for children and young adults of all abilities. Owners Steven and Samantha Komarnitsky are the parents of Nash, age 7, and Colette, aka Coco, age 4. In 2017, Nash was diagnosed with autism. Though it was a difficult process, the diagnosis came as a relief, as it allowed them to figure out a plan of action in getting the right treatments, therapies, and resources. They first came across We Rock the Spectrum in Los Angeles, CA and fell in love with the concept and the services that it provided for their whole family. CONTINUED >

Scott did a fantastic job from start to finish. He has a very friendly style of regular communication that always gave us a sense of confidence and comfort. He advised on how to prepare the house for sale in order to maximize our return, including valuable advice about what was and wasn’t important to do. Once we were ready to put the house on the market, we had over 50 tours and 20 offers in less than 36 hours. I know that this is an unusual time with people scrambling for homes; however fortunate for us as a seller, this created a huge burden due to the shear number of offers, each requiring due diligence. Scott thoroughly summarized every offer for us so that we could easily understand the pros and cons of each. This allowed us to make a quick, confident decision that we felt was best for us and fair to all of those who made an offer. 5 out of 5 stars for Scott Hudson and the Compass team.

project graduation keeps kids safe on graduation night ARTICLE MARIA DINOIA PHOTOGRAPHY SAMANTHA JAY PROJECT GRADUATION (PG) IS A PROGRAM OFFERED BY MANY HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE UNITED STATES, IN WHICH ORGANIZED, ADULT-SUPERVISED AND ALCOHOL-FREE ACTIVITIES ARE PROVIDED AS PART OF A POST-GRADUATION PARTY, AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO STUDENT-RUN EVENTS INVOLVING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES OR DRUGS. At Franklin High School (FHS), it’s no exception. PG was started back in 2001 as a way to keep their students safe on graduation night. “Prior to PG, our county would occasionally have a student injury or death due to an auto accident the night of graduation. It’s been a great event for our students,” says Dr. Shane Pantall, Principal at FHS. Students are met by a red carpet entrance at 10:30 PM and games and activities are set up all over the school. Graduates enjoy a DJ, casino games, chair massages, bingo, dodgeball, inflatable games and so much more. Cash and prize giveaways, along with food and a coffee bar all night long round out the evening which usually ends at 6:00 AM the next morning. Prizes include Macbooks, Yeti’s, gift cards and tickets to places like Holiday World. Dr. Pantall adds, “We couldn’t have PG without the tremendous support of our parents.” There is a PG committee, headed last year by Samantha Jay and Marilyn Trussell, that begins working on the event in early March. Parents also help solicit donations and sponsors from local businesses. This year sponsors included Griffith Law, Lee Company, Culver’s, Birdwell & Mutlak Dentistry, Simon Real Estate, Studio 1-2-1, Club Forms, Best Life Balloons and Kane Fishing Gear. “What a privilege PG has been. I’ve had three out of four children attend as they’ve graduated. Every one of them has loved and enjoyed it, as do I as a mom!,” says Kristin Long, former PTO president. 40

JC: The main thing I see in this office would just be small cavities that are starting. That’s the most common issue I see here for sure.

Besides brushing, what’s a way that kids can keep their mouths healthy as they grow? JC: Go to the dentist. Just in case something is starting, we can catch it early and then it’s a much, much smaller and easier fix if something comes up. Keeping and establishing habits of hygiene and keeping your teeth clean—even as simple as after you eat something sweet or something that gets stuck to your teeth, taking some water in your mouth and swishing it around to clear some of that stuff off.

PUT DOWN THE IPADS. Turn off the televisions. Now, there’s a more stimulating way for children to play. Sensory play engages children’s senses while sharpening important developmental skills. Angela Davis, owner of Bumblebee Bins and Franklin resident of 16 years, discovered this form of activity when she found that her oldest son benefitted from a different approach to learning and developing behavior. Things like playdough, sand boxes and sensory bins that she would make for him at home would keep his attention for a lot longer than other activities. Eventually, during summer of 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Angela noticed that there were no kids outside in her neighborhood anymore and wondered what parents were doing to entertain them. “I knew I was fighting the battle of trying to keep my kids off screens, and I thought we were all 48

probably fighting the same battle,” said Angela. She learned how to make sensory bins and scented playdough and took off with it. A superior alternative to any child sitting in front of a screen, sensory play supports cognitive development and

development,

anxiety, encourages creativity and enhances problem solving skills that lay a foundation for future learning, according to Angela. When children are playing with the sensory bins, they’re using four of their five senses. Bumblebee Bins all come with a few items like scented playdough, a dough roller, and a cookie cutter. Then they contain items specific to their themes. For instance, the mermaid-themed bin contains things like mermaid figurines,

Likewise, the dinosaur-themed bin contains dinosaur figurines, black river rocks, lava rocks, and toy dinosaur bones. The divided bin comes in handy to sort the contents which can be very satisfying and calming to some children. Bumblebee Bins also include a caregiver guide that lists approximately 20 activities that an adult caregiver can participate in with their child. Bumblebee Bins are a great activity for children ages 18 months and older. Pick up one for your child at Fork of the South General Store located in The Factory or shop dozens of beautiful bins online and have them shipped for free at BumblebeeBins.com.

Your Doula Questions Answered AFTER 20 YEARS IN CHILDCARE, TANYA GRABBE DECIDED TO FOCUS ON HER FAVORITE PART OF THE PROCESS - HELPING PARENTS FIND SOLUTIONS. From sleeping to feeding after the baby is here to making an impact on the birth experience and helping with the postpartum period, Tennessee Family Doulas helps parents by supporting the entire family. WHAT IS A DOULA USED FOR? I like to say we are “peace in the chaos” especially for the birthing person. While we do focus on the birth experience and postpartum, we support the family, partner and siblings. We address concerns the partner is having as well as assist in sibling care and adjustment to the new member of the family. WHEN IS THE IDEAL TIME TO HIRE A DOULA? Like a lot of other items related to the pregnancy, it’s the time that works best for birthing person and support system. It can be as early as six weeks pregnant for those who like to plan or as late as 38 weeks. Typically, though the time frame is 15-20 weeks pregnant. HOW DO YOU FIND THE “RIGHT” DOULA FOR YOU? There is an initial consult with me and I will match the family with one of the several female doulas we have. Typically, the first match is a great fit and the families fall in love with their doula immediately.

Certainly a great and successful career so far, and her future looks very bright indeed. But life wasn’t always this rosy for Megan, and it was because of the struggles she faced in high school with chronic daily anxiety and panic attacks that steered her toward the successful career

she has today. Says Megan, “I felt very alone with my struggles in high school and wondered, as I sat in some school assemblies, ‘why aren’t they talking about real life issues or self-care?’ I really wish someone would have laid it out for me in high school.” Megan decided to attend community college, and it was with persistency, tenacity, and an extremely positive inner self that led her to leave college at age 19 and “follow her dream.” Since one of her life’s passions is helping others, it made perfect sense for Megan to choose a career path to fulfill that exact goal. At age 20, she started her own business and began speaking – for free – at local YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs, and inner-city schools. “I truly just never gave up,” Megan says. “I did what I knew, and what I knew was to just get started. My own journey with mental health is what inspired me. I am so passionate about sharing my story and inspiring people. There are so many stigmas with mental health and it’s important to remember almost everyone has things they struggle with daily.” Megan has used her platform, podcasts, books, blogs, and social media to grow her business to the point where today, she has spoken at over 750 universities across the country, her niche audience being millennials, Gen Z, and young adults. In addition, her fourth book, for which she will be out on a book tour this fall, will be released soon. Another incredible piece of Megan’s story is that she has single-handedly shaped her future. She notes, “It’s been just me for a really long time. I’m my own publicist and manager, and am super-passionate about CONTINUED >

The Tennessee native grew up in Union City, but most of his childhood was in Franklin. He left the "super small town" at the age of 10 and landed in Franklin in 1997. "I mean just to see how it's changed over the years and how its grown. To see Grey's go from an actual pharmacy to this super upscale restaurant now. I'm just proud of the entire downtown area." And his favorite place? "We love Cork and Cow and 55 South. I mean to build your own bloody Mary is a fantastic thing they got there." RussellDickerson.com

USUALLY HELD IN MAY, THE IROQUOIS STEEPLECHASE, LABELED AS NASHVILLE’S GRAND TRADITION, TOOK PLACE ON JUNE 26 THIS YEAR DUE TO THE PANDEMIC (IT WAS CANCELED ALTOGETHER IN 2020.) The race, held at the Equestrian Center at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, attracts more than 25,000 spectators each year. In addition to the races, there are art auctions, hat and style contests, tailgating and the Parade of Hounds. A steeplechase is a distance horse race in which competitors are required to jump diverse fence and ditch obstacles. Started in 1941, the Iroquois Steeplechase was named by then President of the Volunteer State Horsemen's Association, John Sloan, Sr., for the 19th century horse Iroquois, that was the first American bred horse to win the Epsom Derby, the preeminent race in England, in 1881. “My family has been involved for a long time,” says Marianne Byrd, the current president of Iroquois Steeplechase. “My mother’s uncle was one of the founders of Iroquois, and my father was a part of the work crews who built the course.” She notes that the race wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of the volunteers. Marianne herself started volunteering at the age of 12 and only missed one race in all the years since (that year, her son was due to be born on race day and she thought it was best to stay home). “The volunteers who work Iroquois have done it for generations and come from all over Middle Tennessee and Northern Alabama,” she says. “We couldn’t do this without them.” She adds that there are easily over 200 volunteers doing everything from emergency response, to cooling down the horses after the race, and setting up the chairs in the box seats. Since the safety and health of the horses are top priorities, veterinarians are on site. Tennessee Equine Hospital, based in Spring Hill, has donated their services for years. They bring all their veterinarians to support the horses who are running. “These horses are superb athletes, and their care and training facilities are about as careful and rigorous as they are for your professional athletes,” says Marianne. “If anyone suspects anything might be wrong with a horse, they cancel all of his upcoming races.” Most of these horses start out on the flat track, she explains, and if they show an inclination towards the ability to jump or the desire to do so, they then go to a steeplechase course. From there, most go into the fox hunting or show jumping world. Many of the horses taking part in Iroquois each year are from Franklin and Williamson County, but others come from Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia, South Carolina, and Kentucky. And some of the horses are shipped in. This year, one came all the way from Europe!

In the 1930s, a group of fox hunting enthusiasts began their quest to build a permanent Steeplechase court. A valley at Percy Warner Park was chosen, and work was started in 1938. By 1941, the race course was completed and its inaugural race was held in May. The winner of the first Iroquois was Rockmayne, ridden by Dinwiddie Lampton and owned (leased) by Barbara Bullitt. Leading up to the featured Iroquois, other races were held, such as the pony races, a grooms’ race (on mules), the Marcellus Frost Hunter Race and the Truxton Purse, a race on the flat named for one of Andrew Jackson’s favorite horses. Volunteers were local fox hunters and those coming from the pasture race circuit. These volunteers eventually created the Volunteer State Horsemen’s Association.

TEACHING YOUR KIDS TO EAT WELL

AS PARENTS, ONE OF OUR BIGGEST PRIORITIES IS ENSURING THAT OUR KIDS ARE GETTING THE NUTRIENTS THEY NEED. But getting them to eat their fruits and vegetables isn’t always easy, especially if your kids are picky eaters like many seem to be. As a mom of two little boys, I know how stressful it can be to feed your kids. But it’s important to establish healthy eating habits early in their life, so they establish a taste for a variety of nutritious foods. Let’s talk about the benefits of introducing healthy food to your kids at an early age. Read on to find helpful information about feeding picky eaters, plus some healthy lunch and snack recipes for kids.

With over 1.3mm Instagram followers and over 250,000 visitors each month, Kids Eat in Color is a VIBRANT, educational, and inspiring national resource for parents to learn the ease and creativity of “what to feed kids” who “love to have fun.” About the Author

Known for her beautiful and colors-of-the-rainbow photos of flavorful meals, Jennifer Anderson is a registered dietician who has a FUN and playful approach to guiding parents to reduce mealtime stress.

4 B E N E F I T S O F H E A LT H Y LU N C H E S A N D S N A C K S F O R K I D S TO E AT NUTRITION IS ESSENTIAL TO KIDS’ DEVELOPMENT My first child fell off the growth chart, and I learned how much effort can go into feeding a child. Kids develop quickly in the first few years of life, so incorporating a variety of nutritious foods is essential to their growth and development. BALANCED NUTRITION LEADS TO HEALTHY KIDS Feeding your child a variety of foods is the key to getting them many different types of nutrients. Each food and group of food helps your child’s body in a different way. For example, foods high in fat such as avocados, olive oil, nuts and seeds, fatty fish, and more support your child’s brain development. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables can help your child fight off illnesses. If your child is struggling to eat veggies, don’t worry about feeding them more fruit while they are learning to eat more veggies. For those kids who won’t eat fruits and veggies, keep having them available at meals so that they can learn to like them.

White and brown foods such as cauliflower and whole grains have plant compounds as well. All the colors count!

HEALTHY EATING AS CHILDREN EQUALS HEALTHY EATING AS ADULTS When little kids learn to eat fruits and vegetables at an early age, they are more likely to continue eating healthy foods as adults. So many of our tastes and eating patterns begin in childhood. COLORFUL FOOD PROVIDES ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS Different plant compounds have colors that give food their colors. For example, beta carotene is a plant compound that makes carrots orange. Each plant compound does something different in your body, which is why eating lots of different colors helps keep our bodies healthy. Sometimes people think of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple as the only “colorful” foods. White and brown foods such as cauliflower and whole grains have plant compounds as well. All the colors count!

3 T I P S F O R G E T T I N G YO U R K I D S TO E AT H E A LT H Y F O O D S MAKE SNACKS AND MEALTIME FUN We all know that kids like to play and have fun, so why not make food fun? Whether you’re turning broccoli into a microphone at dinner, or playing tic-tac-toe with edible carrot sticks, kids get into it. They also love trying new utensils, helping prepare food, and using new kitchen tools. The more fun they have, the more they are willing to try new things and eat more foods. Kids, especially kids who may be picky or selective, often like a little bit of novelty. There are lots of ways to add a little bit of novelty without spending a lot of time. My top recommendation is toothpicks. I call it “toothpick magic.” Whenever your child is ready to use toothpicks, try it with any food that they are hesitant to eat and see what happens. It’s hard for kids and adults to resist eating food off a toothpick. We also love silicone muffin cups, mini cookie cutters, food picks and fun silverware. I also love our stainless steel lunch boxes. If you’re trying to decide which one is best for you, I wrote a surprisingly honest review of the 16 most popular stainless steel lunch boxes on the Kids Eat in Color blog. DON’T GIVE UP Parents often assume that if a child doesn’t eat a food the first or second time it’s served, the child doesn’t like the food. Teaching kids to eat a variety of foods is a long game. Many children may need to see or taste a food 10 or 20 times before they are willing to eat it. Especially selective kids may need hundreds of exposures before they learn to like a new food. What’s important is that as parents, we don’t give up. A child will never learn to eat a food that isn’t on the table. If you’re struggling with a picky eater, I highly recommend the Kids Eat in Color® free picky eater guide (at KidsEatInColor.com) that walks parents through how to help a picky child eat more foods. FORCING HEALTHY FOODS ON KIDS OFTEN BACKFIRES Another assumption is that we have to make kids eat healthy foods. Often, making a child eat food or eat a certain amount of food backfires. It may backfire in the short run by making a child more selective and less likely to eat the foods you want them to eat. It can also backfire in the long run and make it hard for a child to tell when they are hungry or full. If you’ve ever felt a compulsion to finish your plate even after you feel full, that may come from your previous experiences of having to finish your plate.

S TA R T H E A LT H Y H A B I T S E A R LY The key takeaway here is to introduce healthy foods to your child at an early age. Be patient with your pickiest of eaters, and re-introduce a food several times. Stick with it; their longterm health habits depend on it! Children tend to mimic adults, so try to be a good example and eat the foods you want them to eat. Your health will benefit too! Try to make snacks and mealtime fun for your kids so they will want to participate and develop a healthy relationship with food. 108 Franklin Lifestyle | August 2021
