them, may we be them, may we raise them!" It's one of my favorites. Even more so as

Megan Zinger

I write this letter because this WHOLE issue is dedicated to strong women! Starting with our cover story on Joanna and Clea from The Home Edit, we cover women business owners, women leaders, influencers, moms and more. An entire issue devoted to all the wonderful things local women are doing to make this world a better place. As you can imagine, it was so much fun to put together! I thought I'd share two more of my favorite women centric quotes: "A strong woman accepts both compliments and criticism graciously, knowing that it takes both sun and rain for a flower to grow." Annnnd... "A woman who knows what she brings to the table is not afraid to eat alone." There you have it. I am humbled by the women in this issue. I hope you feel inspired

She then went on to attend Vanderbilt University where she obtained her Masters of Science in Nursing in 2006. Jennifer is a board-certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner who, during her nursing career, gained over 13 years of combined Intensive Care, Cardiology, Internal Medicine and Aesthetics experience. LAURIE KILLIAN OWNER AT COOL SPRINGS FITNESS

Giving up isn’t an option for Laurie Killian, Owner of Cool Springs Fitness. CSFIT is an innovative health and fitness club in the heart of Franklin’s Cool Springs area, with plans to open later this fall. Owner Laurie Killian, former General Manager at Prairie Life Fitness, shares her journey to owning her own business. “The hardest part was deciding to create CSFIT right before the pandemic and we have been in a holding pattern for just over a year. We could have said, ‘This just isn’t the time for a gym,’ but we didn’t. We said, ‘There will be a time and we are willing to wait.’ Giving up wasn’t an option.” She adds, “In creating CSFIT, I’m focused not only on proper equipment, classes, and personal training but also on skin, food, community, kids, and the relaxation time needed to be our optimal selves!” Laurie, her childhood sweetheart and husband Tom, and their three sons have lived in the Franklin/ Cool Springs area for over 20 years. Her advice to other women? “Surround yourself with knowledgeable, respected, honorable women who will lift you up, and you them. Seek women who will pray with and for you, who will spend the time to walk through the weeds with you. Create a team who will show up, always. You can do this, so don’t give up!” lkillian@mycsfit.com www.mycsfit.com #MYCSFIT Facebook: @coolspringsfitnessTN Instagram: @coolspringsfitness

FOUNDER, TENNESSEE WOMEN CONNECT WHY DID YOU START THIS NETWORKING GROUP? I started this group for women because I had just not found the right fit for me. Quite frankly, I didn’t like the options that were out there. I wanted a place to bring women together in a comfortable and

lucy miller

supportive environment that would also feed their need to make business connections for growth. So I started Franklin Women Connect and planned our first happy hour. The success of the group and interest from other areas has led to our expansion efforts as Tennessee Women Connect. WHAT (DO YOU THINK) MADE THE GROUP SO SUCCESSFUL? There are a number of reasons, but perhaps the biggest one is that there was a desire that was not being met for women to connect and be supportive of each other. From day one, there was a tremendous sense of community and support between the women. I think that is the driving factor to the success and growth of Tennessee Women Connect. It also has been helpful that we have not excluded anyone or any profession. The fun we have doesn’t hurt either! WHAT HAS BEEN KEY FOR YOU THIS YEAR RELATED TO ADAPTABILITY? Obviously, the last 12 months have required a great deal of adaptability for everyone. Tennessee Women Connect is no exception. We have added virtual offerings on an app called Clubhouse, zooms, and webinars as well as a mix of in-person events to meet the needs of the women that we support. IN RETROSPECT, WHAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST SHOCKING: THINGS//TURN OF EVENTS/SITUATION THAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? The overwhelming support and desire to be a part of the group and in so many different areas was a surprise…but also expected as it was something I was looking for. It has helped drive us through this expansion. Apparently, there are many women looking for the same thing as me. WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR DAY/WEEK AND HOW DO YOU FIND THE MOTIVATION TO COMPLETE THE TASK? Working a busy career as a realtor while also running Tennessee Women Connect is a challenge in and of itself. Then throw in two busy kids and things can get hectic really fast. The excitement and happiness I see in the lives this group is impacting, gives me the results and motivation to keep building this group.

mindy tate EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, FRANKLIN TOMORROW WHAT HAS BEEN KEY FOR YOU THIS YEAR RELATED TO ADAPTABILITY? I am a social person, so it was incredibly difficult at first, but I just had to give myself some grace as it related to how I tick. I needed to continue to see faces and engage with people. IN RETROSPECT, WHAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST SHOCKING: THINGS/CLASS/TURN OF EVENTS/ SITUATION THAT LED YOU TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY? Becoming Executive Director of Franklin Tomorrow. I think it rounds out my career in community or public service journalism nicely. WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING CHALLENGING ABOUT YOUR DAY/WEEK AND HOW DO YOU FIND THE MOTIVATION TO COMPLETE THE TASK? I have always believed in just doing the task. Ann Landers once said, “Opportunities are usually disguised by hard work, so most people don’t recognize them.” You have to move through it. Always focus on and look for the solution. MY FAVORITE THING IS... Thing to do is travel and my favorite place is Walt Disney World. I went as a child but for the last 25 years, my spousal equivalent and I have been going several times a year and are annual pass holders. My favorite spot is World’s Showcase and Epcot and the classic, Magic Kingdom. It is a place where we can be carefree. I also love the beach, particularly Pensacola Beach and to visit our Canadian Sister City -Carleton Place, Ontario. WHAT DO YOU THINK MADE YOU SUCCESSFUL OR MADE YOU FINALLY FEEL SUCCESSFUL? Knowing my work has had a positive impact on my community and on others. I still have people come up to me and tell me how I wrote a story many years ago and what it meant to them. As it relates to Franklin Tomorrow, it’s the continued evolution of not just the organization, but our role in the community and greater recognition across the country about what a special place Franklin is.

POOLSIDE EXPLORING YOUR POOL OPTIONS AS SUMMER APPROACHES, A POOL SOUNDS SO REFRESHING AND INVITING. People without pools start to wish they had one, but they deserve one built to their specific wants and needs rather than a “cookie-cutter” pool. Jason Shapiro of Perfect 7 Pools designs and builds custom luxury pools for families in Franklin. His boutique-style business has been around since 2015. It is important for Jason to have a clear understanding of the family and their lifestyle before planning and building their pool. Every detail depends on their hobbies, preferences, yard, and home exterior. Jason renders a 3D ARTICLE BRIANNA MELANSON

a-kind pool while their kids have a swimming contest. Jason says, “When my clients and their children play the highlight reel of their life decades later, some of their memories will likely take place at the pool I built and designed for them. I approach every project with that in mind.” All of his clients have unique stories and motivations for adding a pool to their home.

DON’T BE SALTY; SALT VS. CHLORINE Many people think they want a saltwater pool for its silky feel and low maintenance. However, with more research, they’ll learn that salt water systems can require more work than expected. A saltwater pool does not mean chlorine-free. The water may not smell of chlorine, but the salt system is still producing chlorine to purify the water. Saltwater pools only thrive when they are consistently maintained and kept above 55 degrees. So in Tennessee, only a portion of the year the salt will naturally make chlorine. In addition, the mineral can corrode high traffic areas when it seeps into the deck’s pores resulting in more stress and money to spend.

THINK ON YOUR FEET; TRAVERTINE IS COOL Compared to concrete pavers, travertine pool decks are significantly cooler under the hot sun. You don’t have to worry about burning your bare feet when walking around the pool. The natural stone, sourced from Turkey, is available in a variety of colors to match the home. So ivory or silver travertine would go perfectly with a modern white brick home while rustic homes will pair well with the earthy look of scabos travertine. Jason says, “You want to carry the fixtures, finishes, style and feel of the house into the back yard so there’s no visual disconnect.”

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED) DIVE IN; THE DEEP END Perfect 7 pools typically go down to between 5.5 and 6 feet deep. This makes playing pool games such as Marco Polo and volleyball a breeze. If you want a diving board, the deep end must be a minimum of 8.5 feet deep. Take a moment to think about how often a diving board would be used in your household. A typical pool size is 40 by 20 feet, so if 24 feet of the pool is designated for diving, you’ll be treading water in more than half the pool. The pool can be perfect for exercise purposes, but more often the pool is a leisurely place to relax and have fun. THE RIGHT ANGLE; CIRCULAR OR RECTANGULAR While Perfect 7 can create any shape you want for your pool, round and rectangle pools are the most common. Between the two, sleek rectangular pools are both classic and on trend. The geometric, clean lines present a formal and contemporary vibe. The simplicity makes it a wonderful foundation to add special wow-factors. These premium components include water features, negative edges, fire features, copper scuppers, and more. Rectangular pools are also great for those who swim laps because of the extra length. The rectangular shape is the easiest to cover and a better option for narrow yards. Perfect7Pools.com

THE FEMALE PERSPECTIVE ON HOMEBUILDING

ARTICLE ASHLEY HUTCHESON McClain Franks 42

Franklin Lifestyle | May 2021

PHOTOGRAPHY GINA WHALEN

THE CUSTOM HOME BUSINESS IS BOOMING RIGHT NOW IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE AND THERE ARE SOME WONDERFUL WOMEN AT THE HELM MAKING THESE HOMES THE BEST OF WHAT CUSTOMERS CAN EVER ASK FOR. Two of those women are McClain Franks of Tennessee Valley Homes and Lauren Spangler of Hidden Valley Homes. Having both attended high school in Williamson County, they are no strangers to the area and the wants and needs of clients that are specific to the region. Both agree that being a female on the management team is a win for the client. As a woman, McClain believes that an added depth of how a house can efficiently function is added to the planning process. Additional personal touches like colors, trim and requests of the clients can be further realized while a woman is at the table. On a larger scope, they focus on the placement of rooms and daily functionalities that often feel like an afterthought, such as the location of the laundry room. Lauren firmly believes that the female perspective adds a lot of value and a livability to a custom home. One thing that is clear is that McClain and Lauren both have a great deal of humor and positivity in what can at times be challenging situations. McClain explains that it’s often their job to get everyone on the same page while ensuring the tasks are completed within the challenging parameters this exploding climate brings along with it. She warmly refers to it as “wrangling.” While becoming more common in the home building arena, women are not the majority. A potentially daunting thought, both Lauren and McClain don’t view it that way. They both call on their local resources and networks they have actively developed; sourcing for the expert and extra eyes and ears to make sure their customers are not only happy, but ecstatic. Both agree success is how they feel about their career more than it is about any other measure. For Lauren, her feeling of success was after the initial learning curve, when she was confident not only in herself but in what she provided for the customers. For McClain, it’s that “it’s never the same job,” and that she is learning something new every day, being kept on her toes. Being in the same industry they share a common goal and Lauren is clear that it’s to go after it and excel. When all standards are kept high, it keeps expectations high, which is good for the homeowners and creates a continuity in the community that is important. With enough

business to go around in this flourishing climate, McClain is quick to point out that one good builder succeeding only bolsters the rest of the building community.

REORGANIZING YOUR HOME WITH THE HOME EDIT

IN AN ISSUE ABOUT FUN AND FABULOUS WOMEN, IT'S ONLY NATURAL THAT WE'D INCLUDE TWO OF THE MOST WELLKNOWN FUN AND FABULOUS LADIES, JOANNA TEPLIN AND CLEA SHEARER OF THE HOME EDIT. These two have been changing the way America gets organized for the last several years through their Instagram following, their Netflix show and their New York Times best-selling books. Clea moved to Nashville from Los Angeles in 2013. "I did not know a soul." In 2015, a new friend introduced her to Joanna who had also recently moved to the area and previously owned her own organizing business in San Francisco. Clea was thrilled and thought 'Maybe we can do it together.' Joanna did not have quite the same reaction. Armed with a resounding "no," Clea still managed to convince Joanna to go to lunch. And the rest is history. "We just clicked," says Clea, "and we started our business that very same day." Joanna adds that the secret to their success is due to never having been friends first.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS (CONTINUED)

"We had no expectations about how business would effect our friendship and didn't know each other in any other way." And in spite of their differences (if you follow them on Instagram, you know), they actually are very much the same. "Who we are as people, how we want to run a business, what priorities we have and what matters to us in life, we are so so similar and totally aligned," states Joanna. Even when it comes to organizing, their favorite thing to organize is a pantry, hands down. Clea says, "Because it's a challenge. I mean a closet is laid out in a way that is designed to be fairly intuitive. The blueprint is there. When you get in to black belt organizing, the real challenge comes with tiny puzzle pieces. You dump the entire 5,000 piece puzzle on the floor and have to put it back together again. "It's so fun!," adds Joanna. Clea continues, "Very early on, Joanna and I were fiercely devoted to the blending of form and function. We've changed the visual landscape of organizing when it comes to social media. It wasn't really out there before. Function comes first, but form is equally as important to what we do and what we deliver to a client. The aesthetic quality is what motivates you to keep it going." So aspiring organizers, listen up. If you're starting the spring cleaning process, Joanna advises, "Start very small. You want to see a small space through from beginning to end." Clea adds, "You want to start small so you don't get overwhelmed and you know how it works. Start with a purge. Really go through and edit things out. It's free and costs nothing. It's something you can do right away without any real knowledge of how to organize the rest of the items. Getting rid of things you don't want, need or use is incredibly transformational."

THE BUYING POWER OF WOMEN

Furthermore, women play a significant role in the purchase of real estate, the biggest investment most families make. According to a report by Lending Tree, in analyzing data from the 2017 American Community Survey, about 22% percent of single women are homeowners as opposed to only 13% of single men being homeowners. Married women also markedly influence real estate decisions. According to David Powers Homes of Houston, Texas, couples ultimately agree on the purchase together. Women, however, have become increasingly educated consumers, and businesses that don’t recognize this are learning the hard way. Many women, offended by these biases, walk away from a purchase and go elsewhere, demanding to be treated with respect. Advertising and marketing specialists are also catching on. Advertising that stereotypes women and marketing explicitly geared to male audiences doesn’t sit well in the minds of women today. Stereotyping and the absence of

HOUSE AND HOME Women today account for well over half of the spending on household goods and personal items. That's because they take more interest in shopping for these items, especially non-essentials. Women control most of the expenditure not only on décor, linens, and kitchen gadgets, but furniture, cabinetry, carpeting, lighting, and more.

THE SOUTHERN INSPIRED ENTREPRENEUR WALKING INTO FORK OF THE SOUTH YOU CAN’T HELP BUT BE ENAMORED BY THE ENTIRE STORE. The unabashedly southern inspired store is clearly curated by someone who loves what they do and with fantastic taste. In owner Stefanie Gorman's own words, “If I don’t love it, we don’t carry it.” The former Williamson County elementary school teacher credits her charge to female entrepreneurship to God and “really taking that leap of faith.” Hailing from East Tennessee, Stefanie is quick to point out she “won the parental lottery.” She was empowered by both her mother and Mamaw to be herself, without any apologies. Having two strong

southern women by her side, specifically her Mamaw, was instrumental in Stefanie’s life. Her learning to cook, her subsequent love for it and her attention to detail are strictly from her Mamaw’s influence. As a host of two rental cottages, Stefanie was constantly encouraged to share her great style with others; often people wanted to purchase the items in the cottages. When she made up her mind to open a store, she jumped in with both feet to open Fork of the South. The store has 14 employees and supports 85 makers, small businesses and women-owned businesses. Zero in on any product, ask any question, make a comment and Stefanie can tell you all you need to know, and the people and the stories behind the businesses she supports. Honest, positive and upbeat, her emphasis is on everyone feeling valued. When you walk in her door you feel welcomed and important. She’s emphatic about the appreciation she feels when people choose to spend their time and money at Fork of the South over all their other options. Not just for shopping, Fork of the South serves food, and like the merchandise she carries, if she doesn’t like it, she won’t serve it. As a woman who dislikes anything bland and learned from a true southern cook, their food is “good flavored stuff.” They serve a variety of deliciousness - pulled pork, milkshakes, all beef hotdogs, coleslaw (Stefanie’s own non-mayo, non-vinegar super-food recipe) and chili, to name a few. The most exciting part of the menu is the all-day option for a waffle and not just any waffle, a made-toorder Liege waffle. With only a handful of places you can find these types of waffles in the entire country, you are in for a treat. Slightly crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, the best part is the sugar pearls hiding inside. There are two savory and two sweet flavors, all with sweet local-themed monikers like Leiper’s and Franklin. A quintessential southern lady, Stefanie's hard-working drive and ambition is inspiring. In fact, she is opening a second location in Columbia, TN in late summer. Our community is lucky to be the recipient of all her efforts. Visit Fork of the South in the The Factory at Franklin and follow them on Instagram at @forkofthesouth.

FINANCIAL BUZZ

keystone financial resources - helping women retire with confidence

Glenn Price 82

Franklin Lifestyle | May 2021

ARTICLE BUFFIE BARIL

DO YOU WORRY YOU WON’T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO LIVE COMFORTABLY DURING YOUR RETIREMENT YEARS? Many of us never dreamed to live a year like 2020 with so much uncertainty. Would you love a customized “Retirement Road Map” to success so you can focus on the present, trusting your financial future is secure? Keystone Financial Resources in Brentwood, Tennessee specializes in helping women with their finances. Co-owned by Jonathan Scott and Glenn Price, they have 30 years combined experience in investments and retirement planning. Jonathan Scott explains, “The reason I’m so passionate about helping women take control of their financial future is from watching my mother go through a challenging divorce from my father as a young boy. Her entire security washed away very quickly, and she was forced to become the primary breadwinner. I grew up wanting to protect her. Today, that same protective nature is what I feel when helping clients, but especially our single, widowed, and divorced ones. It’s so rewarding to teach them how to take control of their finances. Lucky for me, my mom works with us here at Keystone.” Co-Owner, Glenn Price, shares a similar story. “As a young boy, I spent weekends and summers helping my nana and pa work on the family farm. Nana was the rock in our family. She was strong, smart, diligent, and organized, and had an amazing heart for the Lord. When pa unexpectedly passed away, I watched fear overtake her because they didn't have a well-thought-out financial plan, and in many ways, we lost her that day too. I too am passionate about educating women to have financial confidence. So many men handle this responsibility. It's essential women know they have a good plan with good people around them to help them accomplish their goals. When they do, these women flourish with confidence, knowing they can have a bright financial future ahead!” “It's really imperative they don't take a backseat role, but a proactive front-seat role,” says Jonathan. “If they face their fears and overcome their financial challenges now, they're going to find freedom.” Glenn adds, “Take time to read books like, Smart Women Finish Rich by David Bach. Most importantly, schedule an appointment with a trusted financial advisor to ensure you have a solid financial plan.” This is where Keystone Financial really shines in developing tax-efficient strategies for your assets and investments. “We're not like big-box firms where you may be reassigned to somebody new periodically," explains Jonathan. "As an independent firm, you're going to be dealing with the same person year in and year out.” “The beautiful thing is we’ve never yet had a plan fail. There's 100% dependability to the plans we’ve created which is really unique in today's industry. One of Keystone’s mottos is we don't want your retirement dictated by what the market does or does not do. We feel your retirement should ultimately be dictated on the lifestyle you desire to live.” Keystone’s Retirement Road Map includes comprehensive income, investment, tax, healthcare, and legacy planning. Drain then toss pierogies with 1 tablespoon olive oil to keep from sticking. In 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat, heat 1 tablespoon oil. Season chicken with salt and pepper, to taste, and cook 8-10 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to plate, cover and allow to rest 5-8 minutes. Slice thin. While chicken rests, lower heat to medium-low and add remaining oil to same skillet. Add garlic, spinach and tomatoes; saute 1-2 minutes until garlic is fragrant. Season with Italian seasoning and salt and pepper, to taste. Stir in chicken broth, heavy cream and 3/4 cup Parmesan. In small bowl, whisk cold water and cornstarch then stir into pan. Simmer 4-5 minutes until thickened and creamy. Return chicken and pierogies to skillet and toss to combine. If desired, top with additional seasonings, to taste. Garnish with fresh basil, Parmesan and red pepper flakes, if desired.

Masterson moved to Nashville from Chicago to grow her father's event fencing business. She was also styling celebrities on the side and developed Epic Rain, an online boutique focused on the clothes of women in music. I want to inspire other women to get out there and lift each other up."
