GRAND OPENING OF DRY EYE CENTER Dry Eye Center of Brentwood announces the opening of a stateof-the-art boutique, blepharitits and dry eye center. James Rynerson, MD uses a new cutting-edge protocol to finally fix the source of the disease…no artificial tears, no expensive prescriptions, no more daily suffering from red, irritated eyes. This unique practice is the first of its kind in the country that actually fixes dry eye and blepharitis. Recent discoveries reveal that dry eye disease is a form of blepharitis, a chronic inflammatory condition caused by a bacterial biofilm that accumulates on everyone's eyelids to some degree. If this biofilm can be eliminated, the glands that make our tears can recover and symptoms can be eliminated. Dr. Rynerson, the developer of this new treatment protocol, lectures all over the world teaching doctors how to finally fix dry eye disease by performing a BlephEx procedure, followed by the new Alcon ILux procedure, and his practice is right here in Brentwood. At Dry Eye Center of Brentwood, dry eye ends right here, right now!

A WA L K T O REMEMBER LOOKING FOR A HEALTHY, OUTDOOR, AND SOCIALLY-DISTANT ACTIVITY? Look no further than your local cemetery and volunteer to become a “Graver.” Wait! What? Walk around a cemetery? It is not as macabre as it seems. Gravers are volunteers who visit cemeteries to research, clean, transcribe, photograph and document graves, cenotaphs, and burial sites for Find A Grave. Gravers upload the information and photographs to a memorial they create on the Find A Grave website. Find A Grave, the world’s largest gravesite collection, is an online virtual cemetery (think Facebook for the deceased) with over 190 million documented burial sites from more than 244 countries and more than 100 million photo-

EVEN BEFORE DANICA PATRICK RETIRED FROM THE RACING CIRCUIT, SHE WAS EXPLORING ONE OF HER PASSIONS: WINE. "I went to Napa Valley back in 2006 – it was a trip filled with great food and private wine tasting tours and I’d never done that before. I just had so much admiration and respect for the process of making wine. Then not quite two years later, I purchased a Napa property, 24 acres of grapes. Not a lot of time went by from having my own private tasting to owning my own vineyard. I guess I'm an entrepreneur - I have an idea for something and all of a sudden it becomes real. It was that simple." Patrick is anything but simple. "I named my vineyard Somnium, which means “dream” in Latin, because I thought owning my own winery was something that would just be a dream, but it became a reality." Vineyard development began with Cabernet Sauvignon in 2011 and continued until 2014 when Danica discovered the glories of Cabernet Franc, also planted on the estate property. In 2020 she

hired a new head winemaker and wanted to create a new Rose`, making Provence her next adventure. Provence is one of the oldest wine-producing regions
in
France.
Patrick
explains, "There are different rules in America versus other countries – things they can add, things they can put on the label. Provence favors more traditional winemaking." She continues, "There are thousands and thousands of varieties of grapes and three-five different grapes in the rose,` a proprietary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot and Caladac. "I really just enjoy wine and fell in love with the process and what really goes in to making it." Is there any part of her that misses racing? Patrick responds, "No. I’m really happy. I’m having so much fun now. After I retired, just the idea of planning a weekend three months out was like 'Wow!' But I do find myself every now and again giving it a little gas in a road car." Patrick has really nourished her entrepreneurial spirit. In addition to her winery, she authored a book, gives inspirational speeches and hosts a podcast. Pretty Intense, a term she says describes her. "I have three big buckets of my life I spend a lot of time on - mind, mentalness and food.” Her guests are a diverse group, but reveals "the core is really about how things can help us as human beings evolve, grow and step in to our own power and our own awareness of who we really are. How to write the script for our life." Surely, Patrick has ways she likes to unwind. "I love to go for a walk. It’s a really great way to unwind. Yoga. Working out. It’s the only thing I do that shuts my brain off from everything else." She continues, "I love to go on trips and get some culture.

remained steadfast in its commitment to sourcing from local purveyors like Bear Creek Sausage, Benton’s Bacon, Tennessee Real Milk, and Muletown Coffee. In 2015, Bon Appétit named the East Nasty “The Best Sandwich in America.” This is high praise coming from the nation’s highly acclaimed food magazine. They remarked on their #1 pick, “East Nasty is a slightly-crunchy-on-the-exterior, fluffy, buttery biscuit topped with a ridiculously good piece of fried chicken, which is swaddled in rich sausage gravy, then topped with (you guessed it) the other half of the biscuit. Is it insane to even call this a sandwich? Definitely—that’s why we love it.” “We are very grateful to everybody who has helped us get to where we are. Because of the goodness of the food community we’re a part of, we’ve received a lot of support. Our Franklin location has a good mix of tourists and locals.” When asked about what he loved about Franklin, Karl replied, “I love the loyalty to the community. They have really done a good job embracing the history and leaving the old homes while integrating new into it." BiscuitLove.com

T he Butcher Block: A Mot her Daugt her Tea m ARTICLE ED ATLAS
WHAT BEGAN AS A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY QUICKLY BECAME A PASSION THAT’S SHARED WITH A LEGION OF FANS FROM THROUGHOUT WILLIAMSON COUNTY AND BEYOND. The Butcher Block is the antithesis of the meat department in the large grocery store that’s around the block from your home. That’s why customers are going out of their way for the unique experience and exceptional products and services offered by the mother-daughter tandem of owners Kim and Emily. “We source from smaller farms so we know our suppliers and that means we’re able to offer products that are consistently of the highest quality,” says Kim. “We can make recommendations based on a customer’s specific request and they can taste the difference.” Among the featured items are beef and pork from Creekstone Farms. Creekstone, which supplies many high-end steakhouses, is known for its humane treatment of livestock. Kim and Emily purchased The Butcher Block from the original owners in 2016 and the store has operated from its current location for 19 years. Kim brings her years of corporate retail experience to the operation. Emily came in as store manager but transitioned to the butcher side of operations. “Everything is handcrafted on site,” says Emily. “People plan their entire meal around the meat that they buy. We don’t take it lightly.” In addition to beef and pork, The Butcher Block sells poultry, fresh seafood and frozen sandwiches-to-go (the store does a robust lunch business) and pantry items. GRILLING THE PERFECT STEAK Here are some simple steak grilling tips from Emily at The Butcher Block:
+ Start with 4-5 steaks. (Emily recommends ribeye steaks from Creekstone Farms.)
+ Place your steaks on a sheet pan and rub them with a good olive oil.
+ Let them rest for an hour at room temperature, turning over after 30 minutes.
+ Next, cover them with about ¾ of a bottle of Rolling Rock Pale Ale.
+ Drink whatever’s leftover! + Let steaks rest for another hour at room temperature, again turning over after 30 minutes.
+ Season the steaks with The Butcher Block’s Robust Ribeye Steak Seasoning.
+ Then it’s time to place the steaks on a hot grill. + Emily recommends grilling to an internal temperature of 125 degrees for medium rare.
+ Remove the steaks from the grill and let stand for 5-10 minutes. Photo by Ed Atlas
+ Perfection! Enjoy!

WITH A FRESH AND CUSTOMIZABLE MENU, CORELIFE EATERY TRULY HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE FOR HUSBAND-AND-WIFE DUO SCOTT AND KELSEY SEARLES, OPENING CORELIFE EATERY LOCATIONS IN MIDDLE TENNESSEE WAS THE PERFECT PASSION PROJECT. With Scott’s experience in the restaurant world and Kelsey’s passion for health and wellness as a personal trainer and fitness instructor, the couple has loved bringing healthy, delicious and convenient dishes to the Franklin community. Moving from upstate New York, they could have chosen anywhere to open locations of the fast-casual chain, but as soon as they found Franklin, they knew it was the perfect place to raise their daughter. “We kind of took a year looking around the country, discovered Franklin and just really fell in love with it,” says Kelsey. A few short years after opening Tennessee’s first CoreLife Eatery in Murfreesboro, they established the Franklin location in October of 2020 just as soon as they found the right spot.

FRANKLIN’S FOOD LOVERS
THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC HAS HAD A MAJOR EFFECT ON EVERYONE'S LIVES. Despite the hardships, for Ashley and Dustin Hendel, something positive was born of it: Foodies of Franklin. According to Ashley, "It all started during the pandemic in quarantine. We were always posting about the food we cook at home. We have a lot of friends in the restaurant industry and were hearing their stories, so we then decided to encourage people and let them know that you could go out and eat safely. One of our favorite places was on the verge of shutting down. But you can still go out and you can still support local businesses. We just started the page from there." The couple, married for nine years with two children, also addressed the need of people continually seeking restaurant recommendations. "We go out and try different places all the time. I follow a lot of foodies in Nashville, but there wasn't really anyone doing this in Franklin." Their audience is a combination of people traveling to the area as well as locals. Ashley

continues, "It's not a job. It's a hobby we just enjoy. We weren't trying to make this a big money maker or anything. We're open to seeing where this goes. We'd love to connect with more local restaurants and get more business for them." While they don't claim to be professional chefs, they love sharing all things food and drink including what they cook at home. "We've done cooking classes - cooking with bacon - cooking with beer. My husband is an amazing cook. He loves to smoke meat and cure bacon. I love to cook too. We have a whole family recipe cookbook that I love to use. My mom's margarita recipe is in there. It's super simple and so good." For local and inspiring food and beverage ideas, follow Ashley and Dustin on Instagram at @foodiesoffranklintn.

Mine for Gold/Gold Rush Days Fun fact: the first major gold rush of the United States was not in California. In 1828, more than 20 years before the boom out west, Dahlonega welcomed an influx of miners after it was discovered to have the largest gold deposits found east of the Mississippi River. Today the city celebrates its rich past with attractions that visitors of all ages can enjoy - from educational opportunities including museums and artifacts to interactive experiences such as gold panning and mine tours. During the peak fall season, hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to Dahlonega to commemorate the discovery of gold. Gold Rush Days are always held around the Historic Square October 16-17 and feature more than 200 unique art and craft exhibitors, a parade, children’s activities, cloggers and square dancers, music, gold panning and fantastic food vendor choices.
Hikes to view fall foliage There are many hiking trails both for day hikes and back packing trips near Dahlonega in the Chattahoochee National Forest Trails of Lumpkin County. Before traveling, visitors can download the “Hiking Trails in the Dahlonega Area” guide to learn about 22 trails in the North Georgia Mountains within 32 miles of Dahlonega.
Animal Encounters Dahlonega offers two area wildlife viewing opportunities. Chestatee Wildlife Preserve & Zoo features more than 100 other rescued creatures not normally found in the state from Bengal tigers, black leopards, servals and African lions to lemurs and monkeys. North Georgia Wildlife Park is involved in the conservation of many rare and endangered species such as primates, wild cats, wolves, exotic livestock and more.
Dahlonega Butterfly Farm Open seasonally, from mid-April - Oct. 31st, The Dahlonega Butterfly Farm offers visitors the chance to learn about the life-cycle and get up close to 100+ butterflies in a tropical greenhouse. The farm’s outdoor garden features a “caterpillar habitat” with a variety of perennials and butterfly host plants. 106 Franklin Lifestyle | October 2021

Money Matters EXPERT MORTGAGE ADVICE TO OBTAIN BEST DEAL FOR NEEDS
THE REAL ESTATE MARKET IS HOT, AND MORTGAGES ARE IN HIGH DEMAND. Here to share details about these loans is Wade Quinn, the producing area manager for Bell Bank Mortgage in Brentwood. WHY IS IT A GREAT TIME TO OBTAIN A MORTGAGE? Interest rates are at, or near, an all-time low, making this an opportune time to get a mortgage. Capitalizing on lower rates helps you save money – and qualify for a higher mortgage amount. WHAT TERMS AND RATES ARE AVAILABLE RIGHT NOW? DO YOU SEE THOSE CHANGING IN THE NEAR FUTURE, OR DO YOU THINK THEY’LL HOLD STEADY FOR A WHILE? Currently, Bell Bank Mortgage interest rates are still low. Of course, a person’s loan-to-value ratio and credit score play a major part in determining the exact rate. As far as terms go, we work with clients to determine the term that best fits their needs and qualifications. A lot of people are taking advantage of low-interest rates and refinancing their homes to save money, and some are pulling out equity for other uses, such as debt consolidation, home improvements and investments. Some customers are also getting rid of the private mortgage insurance (PMI) they may have had when they purchased their home. Here at Bell, we offer a wide variety of loans including conventional, jumbo, FHA,

T r avel R ecom mend at ion s for Food ies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” In addition to travels, Dennis is a huge advocate for supporting local businesses and the connection grilling in your own backyard can make. “Grilling is inherently communal. You talk to your neighbors, they smell it, they ask you what you’re cooking; the whole act of it is a community. One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start?’ Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.” CityLifestyle.com/Franklin 117
