SUMMER FREEDOM IS DRAWING TO A CLOSE, AND THE SCHOOL BELLS WILL BE RINGING ANY DAY NOW. (Shhh, I'm secretly excited, but don't tell my kids.) Since we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: kids and pets! From painted family portraits to renowned swim classes and amazing local grooming companies that cater to your furry friends, we have lots of stories in this issue. After all, Franklin is meant for kids and pets. My own kids have grown up in Franklin, and they embrace every aspect of life here. Every month, there is a headshot of me up above. But now, I'm panning out to show you the rest of that photo. My family is as much a part of Franklin Lifestyle as I am. Telling the stories of the people, places and events in Franklin has allowed me to show my children what it means to value work, kindness, and community. But there have also been sacrifices. WILLIAMSON COUNTY SEES RECORD OF 1.72 MILLION VISITORS IN 2018 A record 1.72 million visitors were welcomed to Williamson County in 2018, a 13.6% increase from the 1.51 million visitors in 2017. This marks an increase of 500,000 additional annual visitors to Williamson County since 2014 and marks the fourth consecutive year that the county has outpaced the national average for tourism growth, which in 2018 was only 1.9% across the nation. In 2018, Franklin and the communities of Williamson County gained notable national attention when they were named among “The 25 Coolest Towns in America” by Matador Network, included in “The South’s Prettiest Towns” by Southern Living, and when Franklin’s Main Street was part of Architectural Digest’s “30 Most Beautiful Main Streets Across America.” The outlook for visitation in 2019 is also encouraging as Mic.com has named Franklin among its “Best Places to Travel in 2019.” Two signature restaurants, The Grilled Cheeserie and Ruby Sunshine, have opened along Franklin's iconic Main Street recently. Additionally, eight hotel properties have opened or are scheduled to open in 2019, including The Harpeth Hotel in downtown Franklin.

“WE WANT EVERY CLIENT TO WALK OUT WITH A TREASURE.” –CONNIE HILL

EDDIE AND CONNIE HILL HAVE BEEN CREATING CHILD AND FAMILY PORTRAITURE FOR MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS, OFFERING BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHIC WALL ART AND HANDPAINTED PIECES. So, what sets them apart from all the other photographers? It's simple. The Hills are true portrait artists. In a field that has been inundated by shoot-and-burn enthusiasts, The Hills have always insisted on controlling their artistic process from capture through the final piece. “We want every client to walk out with a treasure,” Connie says. “We want to create something for our clients’ walls that will help them appreciate the awesomeness of these children that they’ve been given responsibility for. It takes time. It takes effort. But we hope it’s worth it.”

“OUR GOAL IS TO TAKE THE EMOTIONAL, EMPOWERING, HAPPY AND INSPIRING STORIES OF OUR CLIENTS AND CREATIVELY WEAVE THEM INTO ART-PIECES THAT ARE POSITIVE AND MEANINGFUL.” —CONNIE HILL

When it comes to technique, the Hills employ the fundamentals of classical portraiture but with a twist. They rarely pose children. Instead, they put them in a starting place and then let them react as kids would react. “But there is a plan,” Eddie says. “We don’t simply follow them around a park. We put them in a carefully crafted environment and then become an observer. We watch what interests them and then gently engage them along those lines.” A big part of creating the ideal portrait environment is managing light, and the Hills credit much of their style to a thorough understanding of it. They favor soft, directional light. Whether they are working outdoors or in the studio, they create the same look. “Those who want true art for their walls will want something special,” Connie says. “Providing an art piece requires more intention and commitment to the final work. Our goal is to take the emotional, empowering, happy and inspiring stories of our clients and creatively weave them into art-pieces that are positive and meaningful." Franklin Lifestyle | August 2019

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE TYPE OF MUSIC TO PERFORM? I love all kinds of music, but my main favorite genre of music is either pop or country, or somewhere in between. I love to perform and listen to slow, emotional songs, but I also love fast, upbeat songs with a positive message. If the venue I’m playing at is quiet and attentive, I’ll play a slow song, but if they are noisy, then I tend to play more upbeat songs. PLEASE SHARE A "FANGIRL" MOMENT—A TIME WHERE YOU MET A CELEBRITY THAT JUST TOOK YOUR BREATH AWAY! I met Colbie Caillat two years ago when I did a writer’s round, and she and her fiancee asked me to write a song with them. It was an awesome experience, and I loved the song that we came up with. It was crazy to think that I was writing with the person who wrote and sang some of my favorite songs growing up, like “Bubbly” and “Brighter Than the Sun.” She and her fiancee were both so kind and inspirational, and I love their music, their creativity and their voices. WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS? I’d like to be writing songs and singing just like I do now. I’d like to play out more and maybe even have my own band to play with. I’d love to travel to different places and play my music for people from all over. I want to write really meaningful songs that many people can relate to, and I hope that will come as I experience more things as I grow up. I want to make music that makes people happy, feel moved, and that they can connect to—just like I connect to music I listen to now. ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER YOUNG TEENS WHO WANT TO BREAK IN TO THE MUSIC BUSINESS? Some advice that I can give is to practice as much as you can, to play out at venues that have live music and meet new people who are also in the music industry. I would also say that sometimes it gets hard to keep doing what you’re doing, but no matter what, you need to keep doing it if it’s what you’re passionate about. It can be hard to not listen to what certain people say, but sometimes it’s best to stick to your opinion and your own confidence in yourself rather than people who try to bring you down. Also, don’t compare yourself to others and be confident in your own abilities. Stay true to yourself and do what you want to do, not what others tell you to do. SHARE HOW YOU BALANCE A MUSIC CAREER WHILE STILL BEING IN SCHOOL! It’s hard to keep straight A's in school and also balance my music career most of the time. I’ve considered homeschooling from time to time, but I love my friends, and I love being around people my age. Advice that I would give is to pay attention in class because that way, you won’t be confused when you have to go home and do your homework, or you won’t have to study as much. Paying attention in class saves time and it helps you have a better understanding of the subject. I know that sometimes it’s hard because you want to talk to friends or you just zone out, but try as hard as you can to pay attention. Another piece of advice is to stay on top of your workload and get your homework and projects done on time or in advance. I try not to stress too much about school and just do the best that I can do. DOGS WILL GO NUTS FOR THESE QUICK + EASY SNACKS

TREAT YOUR PET MAN’S BEST FRIEND DESERVES MAN’S BEST FOOD. Dogs will go nuts for these quick and easy peanut butter and oat treats. With just a few ingredients and a little bit of time, you’ll be well on your way to getting your dog to do anything you ask. And, if you get hungry, you can even sneak one for yourself—just don’t let your pup see!

Peanut Butter + Oats INGREDIENTS + 1 cup old-fashioned oats + 1/2 cup flour + 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter + 1 egg

INSTRUCTIONS 1. Preheat your oven to 300 F.

+ IMPORTANT Be sure the peanut butter you use

does not contain xylitol—the artificial sweetener can be fatal to dogs.

28

Franklin Lifestyle | August 2019

2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together oats, flour, peanut butter and egg until combined. 3. Roll your dough out on a flat surface to about 1/2-inch thickness. 4. Cut out your dog’s favorite shapes with cookie cutters. 5. Place your treats onto a baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Makes about 36 1-inch diameter treats.

For the majority of my life, I have been missing out on the “fillings” of life. Literally. I would eat a cheeseburger, and my teeth would leave the lettuce and tomato behind. I would attempt to eat chicken wings, and let’s just say this was never a pretty sight for me. The issue I had was not that I didn’t want these foods; the issue I had was my teeth. My top four front teeth never quite met with my bottom four, causing me to talk with a slight lisp and miss out on the glorious condiments filling life. After 20 years

of being told that my teeth could only be fixed with jaw surgery, I learned to adapt. I learned to give the issue a rest and move on -- that is, until I was referred to Kemp and Rice Orthodontics. These doctors told me they could fix my teeth with braces. One year of clear brackets versus a painful jaw surgery was a simple choice! The best part was how simple everything was after that. They set me up with an appointment to place on my brackets and wires, everything was clear and nearly invisible, and they accepted my insurance.

It’s still amazing to me how simple they made the process. Now that I’m six months in with my braces, I’ve noticed a dramatic change. I am speaking better and with confidence, my smile has improved, and I can now take a bite of a cheeseburger and get the lettuce and tomatoes, too. Making the decision

to get braces as an adult is not easy. Thankfully, Dr. Kemp and Dr. Rice made that decision a simple one for me, and I can now enjoy the fillings of life!

KRISTEN FINCH SMASH

9 Months

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I’ve been the senior manager of community relations with the Nashville Predators for eight years. I really wanted a dog, but with my crazy schedule, it was hard to have one. When I found out we could have a team dog that I could bring to the office every day, it was perfect. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR TEAM DOG. We adopted Lord Banner of Smashville, or Smash, from Keely’s Friends Dog Rescue when he was 2-3 months old; he’s now about 9 months. We have no idea what breed he is; he’s a true mutt. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A TEAM DOG? Smash has really brought the mood of the organization up. He visits different departments, and if people are having a bad day, they stop by to give him hugs and kisses. He also visits the team in the locker room and helps relieve stress and anxiety. In addition, Smash is involved with Weber’s Woof Pack, our fan club for dogs. For $30, your dog gets a Woof Pack collar and leash, a dog tag, a dog bowl and invitations to exclusive dog park meet-ups throughout the city, where Smash likes to play. All proceeds go to the Nashville Humane Association.

It may be by nudging my hand, jumping in my lap or sticking her nose in my ear from the back seat while I’m driving. She brings me back to reality and gives me peace of mind. I love her unconditionally, and I don’t know where I would be without her.

ELIZABETH TREADWELL BOGEY 7 Years

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I was born and raised in Michigan, lived in Chicago and then moved to Nashville 4 1/2 years ago to obtain my MBA. I live with my fiancee and two dogs and work for Mars Pet Care in Cool Springs. I was always taught to help others whenever possible. Since I love animals and volunteering, having a pet therapy dog is a perfect fit. TELL ME ABOUT YOUR THERAPY DOG. Bogey is a 7-year-old, 100-pound yellow Labrador I adopted from a shelter. He was about 12 weeks old and just so laid-back. Remembering how much joy my grandfather got when a dog would visit him in the hospital, I decided to get Bogey, at age 2, certified as a hospital therapy dog. Unfortunately, he failed twice because he just couldn’t ignore the food plates passing by. He was able to pass another exam to work with kids in the Chicago Public Schools system. They would read to him and Bogey loved it; he would hang out with his belly up in the air. After moving to Nashville, Bogey, at age 5 1/2, finally passed the test to be certified as a hospital therapy dog. We were then told that the Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt was looking for volunteers, so now Bogey and I visit every other Tuesday morning. WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A THERAPY DOG? When the kids see Bogey, their whole demeanors change because they can focus on him rather than what they’re actually there for. The kids in rehab don’t even realize they’re still doing their therapy work by walking and petting him. August 2019 | Franklin Lifestyle

SUMMER MAY BE WINDING DOWN, BUT WITH THE TENNESSEE SUN STILL SENDING TEMPERATURES SOARING, MANY ARE STILL FLOCKING TO THE POOL IN HOPES OF CATCHING SOME RELIEF. But did you know that every year, an average of 356 children ages 0-14 drown in pools and spas? According to the CDC, drowning is the number one cause of unintentional deaths in children ages 1-4. But many of these deaths can be prevented with proper swim instruction. Well, there's a new business in town providing yearround, indoor swimming lessons. Owners of Goldfish Swim School Franklin and Darby Walden recently moved here from Chicago to open the school. "As parents to three little ones, we understand how important water safety is to all families. We know that this area has a strong swimming community, and we are thrilled to bring the Goldfish curriculum, high-quality instruction and state-of-the-art facility to Franklin. Our team wants to ensure that children have a safe, fun and friendly place to learn this lifesaving skill." Goldfish Swim School provides swim lessons to children ages 4 months to 12 years. Using "The Science of SwimPlay," the goal is to "develop life skills in and

out of the water in a one-of-a-kind, play-based learning environment." Classes are small, and instructors undergo an extensive hiring process and comprehensive training period. Think of it as a one-stop-shop for learning how to swim. And it's taking out all of the guesswork and hassle. Is it stormy out? Too cold to swim? No problem! Goldfish Swim School Franklin is located at an indoor facility with 90-degree water temperatures and an air-conditioned viewing facility with free Wi-Fi. Forgot to bring goggles and snacks? Goldfish Swim School offers "The Snack Shack" snack bar and "Treasure Island Pro Shop" for treats and gear. Don't forget to take advantage of its hair drying station, swimsuit dryers and private changing rooms. Goldfish Swim School Franklin offers something for everyone from casual drop-in lessons to group lessons, annual memberships and parties. The Franklin facility is open seven days a week, and families can register for lessons by visiting their website by calling. 1113 Murfreesboro Road, Suite 201 615.680.7946 GoldfishSwimSchool.com/Franklin

5 Ice Cream Shops To Visit Before

Summer Ends Elliston Place Soda Shop

It’s a classic that’s now right here in Franklin. Known for their yummy sundaes, splits and thick milkshakes, Elliston Place has its second location right off Carothers in Cool Springs. Have someone in the family who doesn’t have a sweet tooth? Grab a basket of fries or onion rings and make the whole clan happy.

Bobbie’s Dairy Dip A Nashville staple located on Charlotte Avenue, Bobbie’s has been around since 1951. A true ice cream stand, Bobbie’s is only open in the summer. Both kids and adults alike will have fun with the nostalgia of walking up to the window and ordering a cone.

Sonic Shakes, slushes, sundaes—oh my! Any Sonic is yummy and brimming with a million cool treat choices from creamy to fruity, but one of the more fun locations is close to Franklin High School on Hillsboro. Got young ones you don’t want to chase around? Load them up and let them eat right there in the car.

Whole Foods Market—McEwen Needing to get some things done and everyone is in an afternoon slump? Hit the Whole Foods coffee bar to grab some of their delicious gelato and roam the store to gather your grocery essentials. Wanting to branch out? Try some mochi at the mochi bar near the bakery. Mochi has a cakelike exterior with ice cream filling.

Las Paletas Located in 12 South and on-site at lucky local festivals, these Mexican ice cream bars and fruit-based popsicles are out of this world. In flavors you’ve never concocted in your own kitchen and some classics, you’ll have every member of the family choose a different flavor simply to taste them all!

I will continue to be involved!” GOTR offers scholarships based on family income and will not turn any girl away. PARTING THOUGHTS

H ow to S e t Yo u r K i ds U p f o r S u cc e s s ARTICLE REBECCA FRIZZELL

PHOTOGRAPHY MISTY WESTEBBE

Rebecca Frizzell + CO-OWNER OF PRIMROSE SCHOOL OF COOL SPRINGS + MOM + DEVOTED TO CHILDREN

Children start learning from the moment they are born, and research shows that the first five years of a child’s life hold the most potential for development. That’s a lot of pressure for parents! What is the best way to make the most of this once-in-alifetime opportunity for learning? “We know every child and family is different— there is no one-size-fits-all approach to teaching and learning,” Rebecca Frizzell says. “At Primrose, our approach is all about balance— balance between purposeful play and guidance from teachers, balance between traditional early education methods and the latest research, and balance between different developmental areas.” “We believe who children become is just as important as what they know,” Rebecca adds. “Character development and life skills are also key components of our balanced learning approach.” 3 TIPS FOR SUCCESS 1. Balance play with guidance and instruction, which maximizes each child’s opportunity to learn, make choices and become independent, no matter his or her learning style. 2. Encourage curiosity, creativity, confidence and compassion. 3. Reinforce skills and concepts through different, yet connected experiences. In a classroom setting, a learning theme might be living things. When the children go outside to play, they will observe the grass, trees, insects and birds. Then they may explore the different stages of a plant’s life cycle at the science center, read a book about living things with the teacher and write a story or paint a picture based on living things. Children can explore any topic in a variety of ways. As a result, learning comes naturally and is so much fun—in or out of the classroom.
