HOUSE-READY STAGING A HOME CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
12
Franklin Lifestyle | January 2018

O I REALLY NEED TO STAGE MY HOME? Why do successful sellers spend the time, effort and sometimes dollars to stage their home? A staged home can make the difference in getting top dollar and selling more quickly!
Buyers are looking for that emotional connection when searching
for a home. We are all emotional shoppers and often willing to spend above our predetermined limit for something that has that emotional connection. Staging rarely requires spending loads of money, unless your home has been somewhat neglected and is in need of repair. COLOR PALETTE Dark tan and gold paint colors used to be all the rage. The same is true of the darker kitchen backsplash, black or brown kitchen granite, sandy color bathroom tile and cultured marble countertops. If this describes your home, you may wonder what steps do I take to update my home? 1. Paint, paint, paint! Lightening the walls is one way to get the best bang for your buck. Can you believe soft white walls are now all the rage? 2. De-clutter by storing some furniture. If your furniture is dated, slipcovers can also be a good idea. Maybe a trip to Ikea is in order. 3. Take down all your family photos, heavy paintings and mirrors that require large nails, and remove all but a few nice tchotchkes from your mantle and shelves. Remember, less is more. 4. Have your carpets cleaned and remove rugs that aren’t calming. Remember, you aren’t decorating for yourself—you are staging to get top dollar.

“FINALLY, FILL YOUR HOME WITH FRESH FLOWERS AND A WELCOME MAT AT THE FRONT DOOR. NOW YOUR HOME SAYS “WELCOME” AND IS READY FOR BUYERS TO COME CALLING!”
OUTDOOR STAGING You’ve heard the term curb appeal. It’s true; folks make their second impression as they pull up to the curb. (The first impression was probably online when they saw photos of your home.) To boost your curb appeal, fix the items you can. Paint exterior wood that is chipping, trim overgrown plants/trees, add brightly colored plants and fresh mulch, replace or clean exterior light fixtures, replace worn outdoor seat cushions and power-wash your sidewalk and walkway. SO, WHAT’S LEFT? Use light or white bedding, light or white towels (used only for photos and when buyers come) and remove all clutter—even the cute things—off of kitchen counters, bathroom counters, bathtub corners and showers. Hide those trash cans, even the fun ones. Buyers are looking for a home that feels new and will happily buy a resale home if the home has been updated. Take an afternoon and visit several new construction models. You’ll come away giddy and understand what today’s buyers are looking for. Finally, fill your home with fresh flowers and a welcome mat at the front door. Now your home says “welcome” and is ready for buyers to come calling! WHAT’S TRENDING IN FITNESS IN 2018? A Q&A WITH THE EXPERTS
FROM WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY TO WELLNESS COACHING, TRENDS IN FITNESS ARE ALWAYS CHANGING. A new year symbolizes a fresh start, so many see it as a perfect time to undertake a new fitness routine or even reenergize a stale workout. Franklin Lifestyle surveyed the local gym landscape and talked to some top local owners to get their take on 2018’s trends. SHELLIE BLANKS CIMAROSTI, OWNER OF TEAM TAE BO FRANKLIN 1113 Murfreesboro Road, Suite 101 Franklin, TN 37064 615.348.5606 WHAT DO YOU SEE AS TRENDING NOW? The new trends for training are HIIT training, which is high-intensity interval training, where you are training at a fast pace for a certain period of time, using either a cardiovascular or strength exercise. You push yourself to your limits and beyond. People seem to be really into exercises that tap into pushing not only the physical but the mental aspect of physical fitness. CrossFit has also been an exercise that is trending lately. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES AN EXERCISE TRENDY? An exercise is trendy when a celebrity endorses it, and people become interested for that reason. Also, exercises become trendy when it is “the new thing” so to speak—when something is tweaked, or there is a certain “spin” to an already familiar exercise. WHAT TYPES OF CLASSES DOES TEAM TAE BO OFFER? We offer cardio classes, (Tae Bo) a strength training class (Flex), kickboxing class (contact with a heavy bag) and a body weight suspension training and core class called TRX. 20

SHARON THOMPSON, OWNER OF CYCLEBAR FRANKLIN 9040 Carothers Parkway, Suite A-207 Franklin, TN 37067 615.784.8902 WHAT DO YOU SEE AS TRENDING NOW? There’s currently high demand for boutique fitness experiences. We see this in CrossFit, barre, yoga and with our business, indoor cycling. We see the trend going towards smaller, more intimate experiences. The idea of group fitness is nothing new, but now, we’re seeing new business models that just make these experiences more accessible and
CYCLEBAR FRANKLIN
much stronger for people at all skill levels. IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT MAKES AN EXERCISE TRENDY? In order to be trendy, the fitness program needs to appeal to different demographics and transcend gender. The best workout programs are fun for both men and women at all skill levels. With the hot group fitness concepts that are out there now, I notice that they’re all able to accommodate everyone, regardless of age and where they’re at in their development. WHAT TYPES OF CLASSES DOES CYCLEBAR OFFER? We really have three kinds of rides. In our classic ride, it has something for everyone with a rocking mix of strength, endurance, challenges, hills and drills. In the connect ride, it’s more of a restorative exercise where we dim the lights, turn off the monitors and focus on the music. In our performance ride, we up the game with a ride that focuses on stats, group challenges and rider competitions. These classes are 45 minutes long and are in our CycleTheater which has the best audio, video and lighting technology. After each class you will receive CycleStats which contain your class rank, calories burned, average max RPMs, average/max watts and the instructor’s playlist.

ORANGETHEORY FITNESS FRANKLIN MEGHAN LITTLEJOHN, OWNER OF ORANGETHEORY FITNESS FRANKLIN 3301 Aspen Grove Drive, Suite 107 Franklin, TN 37067 615.504.1110 WHAT MAKES AN EXERCISE TRENDY? The development of new fitness-related technology. New workouts and fitness studios are trying to keep up with the evolving trend of technology. At Orangetheory, everyone wears a digital heart rate monitor that can be paired with our Orangetheory app. Our OTbeat app allows our members the opportunity to record a workout, join a challenge with other local members, review the results from their workout and book class sessions. We try to make our members’ experience convenient, fun and challenging.
“We try to make our members’ experience convenient, fun and challenging.”
WHAT DOES ORANGETHEORY OFFER? Orangetheory Fitness is a 60-minute workout broken into intervals of cardiovascular and strength training, led by an experienced coach. The heart-rate-monitored, high-intensity workout is scientifically designed to keep heart rates in a target zone that spikes metabolism and increases energy, allowing clients to continue burning calories for 36 hours following the workout, backed by the science of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). Participants burn an average of 500+ total calories per 60-minute training session (individual results vary).

Honoring the Children of the Fallen A STORY OF COMPASSION AND EMPATHY ARTICLE PAIGE SWOPE
WHEN A MEMBER OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY PASSES AWAY, A CELEBRATION OF HIS OR HER LIFE AND SERVICE IS PROVIDED BY THE U.S. military. During the funeral, a folded flag is presented to the family. By presenting the flag to a fallen soldier’s family, the military is honoring not just the soldier’s sacrifice, but the family’s sacrifice as well. Daryl Mackin, founder and executive director of A Soldier’s Child Foundation and author of the book A Life Worth Celebrating, understands the importance of this tradition as the foundation’s three Points of Service represent the three points of the folded flag. In his book, he says, “First we celebrate their lives (children of the fallen) by honoring them on their birthday each year until they turn eighteen ... Second, we provide opportunities for mentorship as they grow. Third, we facilitate financial support for secondary and post-secondary education through scholarships awarded by our partners at The Fallen Patriots and The Folded Flag Foundations.” Daryl is a veteran himself as he served in the United States Navy for six years as a chef and served on five different Navy vessels. He understands the sacrifices that are required of the soldier and the soldier’s family. Daryl’s vision for the foundation began when he was planning his son’s sixth birthday party. He began thinking of Christian Golczynski, who lost his father, Marc, on March 27, 2007. Daryl was neighbors with Marc’s dad and stepmom, and they gave him a picture of Christian accepting his father’s flag at his funeral and a picture of Marc in an Assault Amphibious Vehicle (AAV). In the book, he explains, “The first photo does for me what it does for everybody else. You see Christian holding back the tears; his chin is buckled. He’s trying to be brave while he receives his father’s flag. It’s the picture of an eight-year-old boy stepping up … That second photo reminds me that Marc was just another guy, a man with hopes and dreams … a man with a family. I would never forget his sacrifice.” Thus begins the journey of developing A Soldier’s Child Foundation. In the eight years since its beginning, the organization has become nationally recognized. Daryl and the foundation were

Q&A WITH DR. ALICIA GORDON FRANKLIN DENTAL CARE EXPLAINS THE IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY MOUTH
I
T'S CERTAINLY NOTHING NEW, BUT IT SEEMS MORE PEOPLE HAVE BECOME AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF DENTAL HEALTH AS AN INDICATION OF OVERALL HEALTH. Dr. Alicia Gordon with Franklin Dental Care gives us the scoop on why.
IS IT TRUE THAT THE HEALTH OF YOUR MOUTH IS AN INDICATOR OF THE WELLNESS OF YOUR BODY? Yes. The mouth is one of the first features others notice when they look at a person. Health care professionals consider it a window to the rest of the body. Someone who values health realizes that, in addition to proper diet and regular exercise, routine preventative dental care and necessary restorative care are essential to good health. If dental disease is present, it is likely other body systems are not operating at an optimal level. Many diseases that begin in other parts of the body are evident in the mouth, and some diseases that originate in the mouth can affect other organ systems. Not only is a healthy mouth aesthetically pleasing, it also gives the impression of a healthy body. WHAT ARE SOME WAYS FDC GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY? Over the last 3 1/2 years since we opened, my partner and I have completed four free smile makeovers, typically around a $15,000 value, for local applicants who do not have the means to obtain comprehensive dental care. We both have a huge heart for serving others, and it is very rewarding for us to help someone who is not otherwise able to obtain a healthy mouth, and maybe more importantly, a smile that brings them confidence. God has blessed Dr. Paul Maizan and I in so many ways, and we are grateful to be able to give back to others in a meaningful way that literally changes their lives. Franklin Dental Care also hosted our second annual Free Dentistry Day this summer. We invite other doctors and hygienists to join our own team to provide a full day of free dental work to those in need in our community—what an amazing opportunity to create something bigger than ourselves, and to give back to this wonderful community that supports us and has voted us "Best Dentist" in Franklin for two years in a row. Our office also donates to several Williamson County Schools athletic programs and PTOs. Both doctors spend time giving back to their communities outside of work as well. Pre-med, Gordon was a piano major at Vanderbilt and still uses music to give back to the community. She has organized and played piano for several benefit concerts for underprivileged women and children. She also volunteers on her days off as accompanist for the Heritage Middle School choir concert and competition each spring. Maizan volunteers monthly for the Good Samaritan Clinic, doing extractions for those in need as well as doing extractions in more than 25 Remote Area Medical clinics in several states.
