Yes, it’s true. I like beer. A lot. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate enough to do a bit of traveling and have enjoyed local brews on four continents and a few islands, too. Though we may have been playing catch-up to Germany and Belgium, I can honestly say that the American craft brew scene is my favorite in the world. And those looking for a fantastic taste of great American brews need look no further than right here in Middle Tennessee. When I first moved back to Nashville five years ago (after more than 20 years away), I was disappointed to discover that there were only a handful of breweries in the area. Luckily, that disappointment didn’t last long as our brewery scene has exploded, along with our food, entertainment and culture in general. As this magazine goes to print, we have over 20 to choose from in Williamson and Davidson County alone! For this month’s beer article, I had the “difficult” task of visiting all of the open taprooms in town and I made it my mission to try each and every local beer I could get my hands on. It was a grueling job as you might imagine, but someone had to do it. In my research, I was fortunate enough to sit down with the folks that make, serve and love the beer. The passion and enthusiasm for their craft is evident in each and every can, bottle and keg. I listened to them speak with pride about our people, our brewery scene and our area as a whole. Not once did I hear someone say anything disparaging about their competition. Each brewery has its own specialties, its own personalities and its own unique character. My odyssey around town made me remember why I fell in love with craft beer in the first place. A few years ago, I was sitting in a small craft beer bar in Seattle, and I took a sip of a magical beer that practically knocked me off my feet. It was a one-time IPA from a small brewery and it remains the best beer I have ever had. Since that day, I’ve been searching high and low for an experience to match it. Something tells me that I’m going to discover it right here in Middle Tennessee. The next great American hop-spot and a place I’m proud to call my home.

istory, passion, honor, and tradition are a selection of words that define Lee Kennedy, Proprietor and Master Distiller at Leiper’s Fork Distillery. At the age of 16, a copper still sketched on a cocktail napkin sparked a passion inside Kennedy, who sought to learn the history behind distillation in Williamson County and the science behind crafting spirits. A career in distilling remained a dream for him until the state legislature passed a new law in 2009, allowing distilleries to, once again, plant roots in the historic land of Williamson County. With the support of friends and family, Kennedy set out to seek approval from neighbors and the local government. After years of preparation, his dream becomes a reality when Leiper’s Fork Distillery opens its doors in October. Located in a 200-year-old log cabin, the small batch distillery sits on 27 acres in Leiper’s Fork. The distillery prides itself on recapturing the lost history of distillation in Williamson County. After completing extensive research, Kennedy discovered there were seven distilleries located in Williamson County in 1850. “We had 23 years of prohibition. Before then, there were nearly 200 distilleries in Tennessee,” Kennedy says. “We are recapturing the lost history of small batch distilling.”

Kennedy draws inspiration from early 1800s settlers who traveled the Natchez Trace distilling and trading whiskey. Because of this, Leiper’s Fork Distillery will launch its Old Natchez Trace Brand white whiskey, priding itself on the tradition and history of original Williamson County settlers. “For them, it was part of everyday life,” says Kennedy. “Most of our fathers drank bourbon, not because it was trendy, but because they wouldn’t contemplate drinking anything else.” The Old Natchez Trace Brand white whiskey is handcrafted using grains grown along the Harpeth River as well as local water. It is a combination of limestone filtered water, corn, rye, and malted barley, filtered through sugar maple charcoal produced on-site. In addition to the Old Natchez Trace Brand, Leiper’s Fork Distillery will produce barrels of a bourbon and Tennessee whiskey that will age for 5-7 years. Since this will not be available for some time, Kennedy will bring back the pre-prohibition label of J.H. Womack & Bros. in collaboration with Dave Scheurich, a world-renowned master distiller, producing a White Maple Tennessee Whiskey. f you were able to travel back in time and stroll along Franklin's Main Street 70 or 80 years ago, you’d probably notice a lot of activity and foot traffic going in and out of Gray’s Pharmacy. The original Gray’s operated from 1926 until 1998 and during that time it was an important gathering and meeting-place for locals. Thousands of people went through those doors, picking up prescriptions, buying household items or just catching up on local news and gossip. Much like its earlier incarnation, the Gray’s On Main of today is still an important social center for the city of Franklin. The modern Gray’s On Main is the brainchild of Joni and Michael Cole. They met in Florence, Ala., where Michael was operating a restaurant with a similar concept. They fell in love and decided to move to Franklin, a place with a big city feel in a small town environment. When they discovered the vacant location of Gray’s Pharmacy, they knew they had found the perfect spot. “This empty building was one of the biggest voids on Main Street,” said Michael. “It just sat empty for years.” They traveled to speakeasies, restaurants, bars and musical venues around

the country to help shape and formulate their own unique spin. After six years of dreaming and planning, Gray’s On Main opened in 2013. “We tried to stay true to the building’s history,” says Joni. “We wanted to honor the past, both the history that was here and the Southern hospitality that came through these doors. We want people who visit us to really have that special Gray’s experience.” It was just the prescription the old pharmacy needed. Gray’s On Main is quickly becoming famous for its artful blend of handcrafted cocktails, eclectic Southern fare and welcoming hospitality. It also features live music and an authentic stage that rivals anything you might find off Broadway in downtown Nashville. Along with an enthusiastic crowd of regulars, it’s not uncommon to spot celebrities in the crowd enjoying the sounds of live jazz, blues, soul and R&B. “We love the live music, but we’re also very proud of our food here,” said Joni. “Michael and I have been blessed that our chef and his staff share our heart to CONTINUED > care for our guests.”

The food at Gray’s can be described as upscale Southern cuisine with a twist. With a strong emphasis on locally-sourced meat and vegetables, popular menu items include steaks, fried chicken, short ribs, fried pimento cheese balls, bacon-wrapped figs, fried green tomatoes and banana pudding. “We want our regulars to feel like they’re at home and tourists to feel like they’re coming home”, said Joni. “We truly want you to feel like your’re part of our family.” Upstairs at the bar, a talented team of mixologists creates their own syrups, bitters and an impressive array of unique hand-crafted cocktails. Their nationally-renowned brandy-forward bar program thrills patrons with creative concoctions like their award-winning Anthem Spirit cocktail. Guests will notice a deliberate emphasis on the little details of each and every drink. “We have always kept an eye on detail,” said Joni. “We encourage everyone who works with us to operate with this spirit of excellence.” The growing crowd of regular customers is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the close-knit Gray's On Main staff. As a team, they are proud of the legacy they are building on Main Street. “I love being here,” says Joni. “We love our job. We love this restaurant. And we love being part of the Franklin community. We’re thankful every day that the community continues to walk through our doors.” The walls of Gray’s On Main are adorned with historical photographs of Franklin luminaries and citizens from throughout the years. Interspersed with the pictures are dozens of antique mirrors. “The walls are checkered with old photos of past faces of Franklin," says Michael. “Right next to the photos, people can look into the mirrors and see the new faces of Franklin.” It isn’t hard to imagine that the faces of Franklin, both new and old, will be walking through the front doors of Gray’s on Main for many decades to come. Over the past five years or so, Nashville has gone from a city with a handful of brewers to a city brimming with local beers and breweries. Davidson and Williamson County alone have around 20 breweries, and more are on the way. With the growth of the brewery scene finally starting to keep pace with the area’s explosive population growth, local beer-lovers have much to be excited about. “I feel like the Nashville beer scene is finally starting to become what some of us craft beer connoisseurs have been waiting for,” says John Overby, brewmaster of Cool Springs Brewery. “I think it has exploded in the last couple of years because of people like me. People that love beer, love to drink beer and love to brew beer and create something of our own.”

Local brewing authorities, however, see it a bit differently. “The next decade should be very exciting,” says Spears. “Despite how much it has boomed, craft beer in Tennessee is in its early stages still. I expect and hope we’ll see a lot more breweries in the coming years.” Another catalyst for growth in the Nashville brewing industry is an upcoming change in local alcohol laws. Starting in January of 2017, the cap on high-gravity beers is going to be relaxed. “With this new law that changes the ABV cap on high gravity beers about to go into effect next year, I think most Tennessee breweries are going to really start experimenting and deepening their portfolios,” says Overby. “We seem to be gaining three-to-five new breweries per year so with that kind of

Meet Rebecca Frizzell FOR THE MONTH'S REAL WIFE OF FRANKLIN, NURTURING CHILDREN REALLY IS A FULL-TIME JOB.

ou remember the one about the customer who was so impressed with a particular product that he bought the company? Rebecca Frizzell, this month’s Real Wife of Franklin, can share a similar story. “It was through a simple Internet search when looking for childcare for my 2-year-old son that I first became involved with Primrose Schools,” she says. “Subconsciously, I think I was searching for reasons not to go back to school. But when Mason, started at Primrose of Murfreesboro, I immediately fell in love with the curriculum and the philosophies behind it.” That was way back in 2012. Watching Mason learn and develop in a variety of areas – academics, social skills, character development, music, language and movement – changed the way Rebecca looked at early childhood education. She knew she had to be a part of the business and began to research ownership opportunities and convinced her mother to become her business partner. Then, a stroke of good luck. “While working with the corporate office to find a location for our school, we learned that the Primrose 38

School of Cool Springs was available for a transfer sale and it was like a match made in heaven,” she says. “I grew up in this area and it was the perfect opportunity to come back home to Williamson County.” She became the owner officially in February 2015. “To say the last 18 months have been a learning experience is understatement!” she says. “In addition to my personal and professional growth as a small business owner, it is a true pleasure to be a part of this community of families and an honor to educate and care for their children every day.” Thanks to the relationships she’s made with Primrose families, Rebecca says she sees people she knows wherever she goes in Franklin. Of course, with her two sons, Mason (now 6) and Jonah (2), Rebecca and husband Joshua run in the same circles as her clients. And those children keep her running in circles, too. There are toys strewn about the car and the house. Pizza is a popular and frequent meal and she can’t remember the last time she read a book. “Moms have time to read?” she jokes. “What’s that like?” When she does have time to unwind, Frizzell admits to being a “sucker” for reality and competition shows. She also enjoys cheering for the University of Tennessee, her alma mater, where she earned a degree in urban studies and regional planning. The fact that she chose to do something with her career that seemingly has little to do with her college education would come as no surprise to those who know her best. “My close friends would describe me as a walking conundrum,” she says. “My food and music choices, hobbies, likes and dislikes are spread across the board and are generally unrelated.”

INGREDIENTS

• ½ cup stout beer • 1/4 cup espesso or strong cold brew • 10 ounces 60% bittersweet chocolate chips • 1 cup butter • 1 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • 3 eggs • 1 cup flour INSTRUCTIONS

• Preheat oven at 250 degrees F. Prepare a 9" X 9" baking pan with parchment paper allowing the paper to hang over the edges and spray with cooking spray. • Bring stout to a boil and reduce to simmer and cook for about 10 minutes or until reduced to ¼ cup. Set aside to cool. • In a double boiler or a small bowl atop a small saucepan filled with 1 inch of water, melt chocolate chips and butter over high heat, stirring occasionally, until melted. • Pour melted chocolate into a medium bowl and cool slightly. Add sugar, vanilla, salt and stout and mix well with a whisk or wooden spoon. Add eggs one at a time, mixing just until combined before adding the next egg. • Fold flour into mixture and pour into baking pan. Bake for one hour or until a toothpick comes out clean.
