For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Fort Collins City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. It’s not what you do some days - it’s what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, filling and fabulous 2023. Here’s to you! We’re rooting for you. Financial Wellness During a Recession

Notes From Layman Lewis Financial Group

18

I NSP IR E D BY | FINAN CE + LE GAL S E RVI CE S

We live in a world today that is increasingly focused on wellness, self-care, and mental health. Admittedly all these things are important to living a happy and healthy life, but a multitude of factors are involved, and they all must line up to be successful. While it may be hard to pinpoint one single focal point that contributes to all of these, I believe that maintaining your financial wellness would be at the top of the list for many. We define financial wellness as the state of well-being in which a person can manage their ongoing monthly bills, expenses, paying debts and then have the resources to address any unexpected financial emergencies that happen along the way. Meanwhile, we also need to plan for longer-term goals such as saving for retirement, college funds, and any large-scale purchases. Clearly, there are many considerations that come into play to reasonably meet these objectives, all while enjoying life. This can be further exacerbated by all the things that are beyond any one person’s control. Things like inflation, rising interest rates, stock market volatility, as well as an impending recession can complicate the process of becoming financially fit. To be financially well during turbulent economic times there are some key factors that are involved. For many having a strict budget is not too common, but when the economy begins to contract, knowing where your money goes can be very advantageous. This allows us to be more rational about elective purchases when we understand how that can impact our ability to pay for our other obligations, like the Excel Energy bill. It also gives us a better determination of how much money we could be saving for those longer-term goals like retirement instead of frittering that money away on something else. By maintaining a reasonable budget and working within those parameters it can also reduce the risk that we need to use leverage by taking out loans or using credit cards excessively. This can also be addressed by maintaining an emergency fund that can be easily accessed to pay for unexpected things that would result in some

type of financial hardship. There are lots of “rules of thumb” here on the amount you should have, but every person’s situation is different and being candid about your situation will prove beneficial. For some, the emergency fund may be there to pay for a hot water heater or furnace. For others, it may be the safety net in case of a layoff or otherwise. This is where debt becomes a critical component of your financial wellness. While there are many “good” attributes of debt there are also many potentially negative ones as well. So, maintaining a healthy relationship with debt becomes paramount when the economy changes its tune and our dollars become exceedingly more important. If our relationship with debt becomes unhealthy then that generally becomes a source of significant stress. Therefore, using a budget in conjunction with assessing debt can help to significantly alleviate the concerns that come with meeting your monthly obligations. Much of this can be attributed to “living within your means” which is not always easy or popular in our social media-obsessed world. Which emphasizes the point of having a budget, because that determines what your income must be. From here a person can then objectively look at how a debt payment can fit into their own personal budget. While all of these forces impact us in a general sense the outcomes will vary based on our own specific situation. This is why a personalized approach to planning for financial wellness becomes increasingly important. The financial wellness of a single 20-something is wildly different than that of a 60-something pre-retiree. So a different approach and focal point are going to be necessary depending on factors like life expectancy and the ability to generate income. For the 20-something, maintaining a steady income and emergency fund can translate to financial wellness for the most part. However, for someone approaching the golden years of retirement will have a much longer “to-do” list in order to feel financially fit. Keeping in mind that our single largest source of revenue in our lifetime is our own personal output. Once our CONTINUED >

We can never achieve success or financial wellness if we believe that things will never improve. working years wind down our need for a consistent income does not and that income is the primary metric of financial wellness in retirement. Having assets is great, however, turning those assets into consistent steady streams of income can be the difference between success and failure. In order to achieve this, we need to invest and have our money work for us along the way. Which requires an investment plan that accommodates not only our objectives but our risk tolerance as well. Maintaining risk parameters that you understand and are comfortable with can help reduce the temptation to make those detrimental “knee-jerk” reactions when the markets get volatile. It can help us be diversified in our investments and look to use multiple streams of income rather than relying on just one single source. Keeping a good perspective is often easier said than done especially when it seems that the end of the world is imminent. I always try and remind folks that the end of the world can only happen once, and while I say this tongue-in-cheek, it still rings true. We can never achieve success or financial wellness if we believe that things will never improve. This is especially true in investor behavior when we see a market decline and it becomes reactionary to either stop investing or to pull back. It's funny because when we as consumers see things go on sale, we get excited to make some purchases. However, when the stock market starts to go on sale, we clutch our wallets a little tighter and can too often miss those buying opportunities. So it’s

important to objectively look at your situation and to make changes and adjustments, not only to your perspective but to your behaviors in order to start making better financial decisions. Once we do this then we have the potential to find true financial wellness regardless of the economic outlook. This is intended for informational purposes only. It is not intended to be used as the sole basis for financial decisions, nor should it be construed as advice designed to meet the particular needs of an individual’s situation. B Bold “If I had a magic pill to regrow my leg, I don't think I'd take it.” The para jujitsu champion says to me as he cheerfully waves at some of his students who are leaving the gym, “All the experiences that I've had since I lost my leg… It took a hell of a lot of determination.” Meet Rustin Hughes: husband, father, veteran, and a “Person of Determination.” At least, that’s what he is known as in the United Arab Emirates, where Rustin first heard the term. “We flew to Abu Dhabi as a part of the para jujitsu team, and they said that they don't have the term disabled or disability,” Rustin explains, “In Abu Dhabi, they say people of determination instead.” This anti-discriminatory language is meant

to recognize strength and focus on individual achievements, rather than obstacles along the way. Nowadays, Rustin’s individual achievements in fitness and community impact are impressive. He’s an amateur MMA fighter, and on his way to becoming one of three above-knee amputee Brazilian jujitsu black belts in the country. He not only trains fellow MMA fighters but teaches a wide variety of classes for all ages and abilities, from kid’s classes to Rock Steady classes and beyond. He also owns and runs B-Bold, a non-profit here in Fort Collins, which features adaptive boxing and grappling classes for the differently abled.

As his training continued and his happiness grew, Rustin realized that this could help a lot of other people too. That's when the idea for the nonprofit began to form. The name B-Bold was chosen in honor of his late wife, Brandy. “Anytime that she would see her grandpa, he'd always shake his fist and say, ‘Be bold, Brandy!’” He says, “That's what she had on her license plates, just kind of a motto.” A motto taken to heart. Just three months after B-Bold’s official start, Rustin took off on his 600-mile bike ride: a celebration of both overcoming his amputation, and to kick off his new non-profit. They left from Fort Collins and rode for six days. “You know, I think there were two days in a row where we had 100-plus miles. And the most that we did was 120 miles and that was on my birthday. So, when I was done, I was yelling at the wind.” Since then, Rustin has dedicated himself to building B-Bold up to what it is today. He prides himself on his community of boxers from all ages and abilities, who build each other up.

His classes attract a huge variety people of almost every ability out there and everyone gets a good workout. “Amputees, paralysis, Parkinson's, MS, CP, vision impairment, PTSD, you name it, I think that they've been in” he says, “and if they haven't yet, we can accommodate them when they do. That's one thing I think is really cool about boxing, is that anybody can do it.” Everyone in Rustin’s B-Bold classes are people of determination. The term ‘disabled’ isn’t used. “It changes people's mindsets of their ability. It's easy to say that you can't do something because you're disabled, but it's hard to say you can't do something because you're a person of determination.” There are events in life that can either be a blessing or a curse. “At times I think we all are disabled. There's something that disables us from doing certain things at times. And, you know, if you can come into my boxing class and get over whatever that is, then we did our job.”

Kristi Shefferd, owner of Pearl Fox Company says that wellness is “a continuation of care and being able to escape for a while.” Practicing self-care has been clinically proven to reduce anxiety, depression, stress, and increase happiness. In 19th-century Europe and the United States, a variety of intellectual, religious, and medical movements developed in parallel with conventional medicine. With their focus on holistic and natural approaches, self-healing, and preventive care, these movements have provided a firm foundation for wellness today. As these have evolved, proliferated, and

gone mainstream—they’ve informed healthy-living practices; self-help; selfcare; fitness; nutrition; diet; spiritual practices—and becoming a flourishing wellness movement in the 21st century. While there is certainly the element of luxury in practicing self-care these days, Kristi and her team are committed to crafting an ideal, practical and worthwhile wellness routine for every client. From the products, they source to the curated service menu Pearl Fox wants to set a high bar of expectation that enables a new standard for the beauty industry.

More Than Meets The Eye Edge Optics ARTICLE BY RACHEL HAWLEY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CASSIE SUPPES

St. Jerome once said, “eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart.” But what if our eyes are holding another secret? According to Doctor Mason Bryant, owner, and Optometrist of Edge Optics, they are. One look into our eyes and a doctor can discover an array of hidden information about our health. “That old saying that eyes are the window to the soul, that’s true because we can see a lot of systemic diseases through the eyes, diabetes, high blood pressure, sickle cell anemia, MS, the list goes on and on,” said Dr. Bryant. And yet, the eyes are one of the most overlooked areas of the body. So, how can this be when so much of our everyday lives involve using our eyes? Dr. Bryant says he understands because it wasn’t until a rare condition drastically changed his life that he realized the importance of his own eyes. When Dr. Bryant was a senior in high school, he and his classmates took a rafting trip that would lead to an unknown parasite entering his eyes. Awakening the following day with little to no vision his condition only worsened. After a visit to his physician, he was declared legally blind. “I was about to go into college and I wasn’t sure I would be able to do it. It really gave me a new perception of how important vision is and how quickly it can leave you. So that sparked my interest in the field and I started taking pre-med courses in undergrad.” With fortune in his favor, eventually, the rare unknown parasite that caused his blindness cleared and he regained his vision. Dr. Bryant’s extreme loss, accompanied by his miraculous recovery, inspired his new passion and career, Optometry.

In 2011, Dr. Bryant and his wife Mindy opened Edge Optics. An eye exam and unique eyewear store with a deep Colorado theme. “We wanted to try to reflect the passions of the local community for the outdoors and sustainability, so when we choose lines for eyeglasses we choose places that have a story, that give back, and are doing eco-friendly products.” As our team was in-store, our Editorial Coordinator and Photographer, Cassie, pointed out that the only thing missing was beer on tap. As the store is filled with artwork from local artists, pine beetle kill wood display cases, and snowboards mounted on the walls, Cassie couldn’t be more right. As a way of furthering its deep connections with the community, Edge Optics offers a VIP program to encourage everyone to focus on their eye health without worrying about overwhelming costs. “We have a VIP program for anyone that comes in, so if you don’t have insurance it’s kind of a discount program, we do it for local businesses too so it will give all your employees and their spouses a discount.” Even with insurance, unfortunately, it doesn’t always have eye coverage, but Dr. Bryant wanted to make sure that wasn’t stopping anyone from getting the care they deserve. With adults ignoring their own eye health, it is no wonder that one of the most overlooked patients is children. “A lot of times the kids don’t know there is anything wrong with their vision and they can’t explain it because they think everyone sees that way,” Dr. Bryant warned. Because of this, children can go

“We’re a family practice, we have two kids of our own, and we want to be open to everyone. There are a lot of doctors that don’t want to deal with kids but we welcome kids and enjoy helping children." with undiagnosed conditions for years. Dr. Bryant and Mindy wanted to create a space for children to enjoy their eye care and be excited to come back. “We’re a family practice, we have two kids of our own, and we want to be open to everyone. There are a lot of doctors that don’t want to deal with kids but we welcome kids and enjoy helping children.” Out of their family-oriented approach came the Kids' Zone, a corner of the store dedicated to children’s eyewear and fun.

To this day, the parasite that entered his eye is still unknown, but because of Dr. Bryant’s own experience of losing his sight, he can connect to his patients better than any other Optometrist. Edge Optics combines healthcare with the personal touches that make every patient excited for a check-up. Dr. Bryant understands his patient's concerns and why it is so important to be seen by a Doctor you trust. When it comes to providing the best eye care, or if you just need a new pair of stylish glasses, there is no better place to go than Edge Optics.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS

Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.

Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!

MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.

SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Self-Care, Wellness, New Year Resolutions, and the Aesthetic Frontier ARTICLE BY MARK KOEPSELL, OWNER/OPERATOR, XANADU MED SPA

As a society, we spend a lot of time, energy, and focus on the topic of self-care throughout the month of January. Whether it is losing a few pounds, expanding (or starting) an exercise routine, eating cleaner, or any number of other opportunities, self-care comes front and center as we look to start a new year with fresh and healthy habits. More and more the focus of self-care is expanding as alternative opportunities for self-care become more and more prevalent in our lives. Aesthetic practices are falling smack in the middle of individual self-care and wellness conversations. Feeling our best is always high on a priority matrix, but more and more we find that looking our best falls equally within that same matrix. According to one source, the global aesthetic medicine market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 9.6% from 2022 to 2030 to reach a whopping 145.7 billion by 2030. Why is that? Because of the expanded focus of aesthetics in the mainstream conversation of health and healthy living. Once upon a time, these conversations were only had by the wealthiest among us – but in 2023 it’s a conversation that is fully accessible by a much broader socio-economic footprint. Self-care and wellness often get used interchangeably. The truth is they both do show up interconnectedly in our lives. One influences the other and oftentimes a focus on wellness means one is also better at exercising self-care. An increased focus on healthy living has really put these conversations in the spotlight of society. Watching what we eat, where that food is sourced, and what ingredients are used is only one form of healthy living. In the growing world of aesthetics, we see many other opportunities to engage in quality selfcare and wellness that can have bountiful outcomes in our journey to wellness. What are your resolutions in 2023? Is it time to update your resolution methodology? And how might you do that? Let’s explore… THE MEDICAL GYM Connected to this conversation is the evolution of some of those traditional self-care resolutions. No more do you have to go to the gym to build muscle and lose fat. A body contouring center can provide the same types of outcomes with a much easier path. Combine some medical weight loss and nutritional support from that same body contouring center and that entire conversation is much more easily achieved. These are opportunities that didn’t even exist just

10 short years ago. Med Spas are now offering medical gym memberships where devices help dissolve the muffin top and provide those abs of steel you’ve always coveted. In sessions as short as 30-minute lunch procedures you can achieve and maintain phenomenal results all without breaking a sweat. BOTOX AND INJECTABLES The self-care conversation expands to injectables as well. Botox has now been around for just over 20 years and its use has become as commonplace as that vitamin C tablet with your morning breakfast. People under the age of 30 are using it as a prevention technique so they don’t have as much to “undo” as they age. People over the age of 55 are using it to turn back the clock. And in between is every example of both conversations combined. Even filler is talked about as a wellness topic. Making sure that facial atrophy is effectively managed to age just that much more gracefully is often times seen as a necessity. With mental health being so closely linked to one’s own self-image, looking good and feeling good about looking good can even become a center point in managing anxiety and creating a high sense of self-worth for some people. Is that vanity? It can be. Especially in extreme cases. But feeling good about oneself has proven time and again to have a positive correlation to mental health. SKIN CARE The largest organ of the body is what? Our skin! True wellness incorporates skincare as part of a comprehensive approach. Whether it comes from regular facials, HydraFacials, or simply from an at-home skin care plan (or more likely a combination of all of these), skin care is absolutely falling within the wellness conversation. Like every other organ, it requires care and attention to keep it in tip-top shape. And as we age, well, it just requires just that much more care and attention. Obviously, there is the benefit of looking good through these procedures, but more importantly, it’s the topic of maintaining a healthy approach toward caring for that all-important organ of the body. We take vitamins and supplements internally to care for our internal health. Facials and good (medical grade) products provide a similar vitamin and supplement approach to caring for your skin. As you consider your resolutions for 2023, don’t forget to include a little aesthetic support within your wellness plan. The benefits are never-ending. And really, who ever complained about maintaining a little youthful look and spirit?
