Your wellness mindset is the starting point of your health and wellbeing. When you value health highly, and are motivated for optimized quality of life potential, you will commit to positive behavioral changes. It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. A way for us to hold space for ourselves to reinvent our mindset with what we cherish most. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. While we LOVE goal setting here, our advice is to take it with a grain of salt. Set your goals but provide room to adjust and pivot them as needed. Some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. Our January issue is dedicated to wellness in the New Year, whatever that means to you! Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, love and fun! Cheers to a healthy and happy 2022!

THE CHILLY HEALTH ROUTINE IN OUR WINTER WATERS

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY TYLER WESTON

O UT D OOR A DV E N T U R E | S PORTS + RE CRE ATI ON

As the weather is turning towards winter and temperatures are steadily dropping, there’s a chance you’ve spotted those wild people wading into Horsetooth reservoir. The natural reaction to seeing people in the water, sometimes while ambient air temperatures are well below freezing, seems to be something along the lines of, “What on earth are they thinking?” I’ll admit that was my initial reaction, so I set out to learn more and eventually, dove in. As it turns out, cold water immersion has been shown to have a wide range of health benefits. Regular practice can benefit the health of your circulatory and endocrine systems, promote healing of musculoskeletal injuries, and even benefit a person’s mental health. The cold water also generates an endorphin boost, creating a natural energetic high, you could compare it to your morning cup of coffee but with a few shivers rather than caffeine shakes. For Theresa Adams, founder of the local social media groups that regularly meet to dip in the reservoir, the reasoning to dive into her new wellness routine was simple.

“I just wanted to feel happy,” Adams, a yoga and fitness instructor by day, says of her motivation to get in the water. She was ready to try something radical. Adams’ first dip was with a friend in Minnesota and she’s been hooked ever since. Now she’s on a mission to share the success and far-reaching benefits she’s found and is doing so with a close-knit community that has been steadily growing. While not everyone makes it out three days a week like Adams, they’ve all got their own motivations for being there. Some walk straight in up to their shoulders or sprint and splash headlong into the chilly water while others still work slowly away from shore, maybe only submerging their feet and ankles, the methodology like the motivation is personal and so long as you are safe there is no wrong way to dip. Aside from all of the purported health benefits one of Adams’ upbeat sayings seems to permeate the entire happening. “You can do hard things!” She’s often heard encouraging people forward. “This makes doing hard things easier,” Adams includes it among CONTINUED > the benefits she’s found in dipping. For those who want a different way to get into the water, and some extra motivation, there’s the option of the annual 5k race and polar bear plunge put on by Green Events. The annual race and cold plunge event is a fundraiser for the Larimer County Dive Rescue Team, who are on site to help make sure all the participants make it back out of the water safely. Lisa Sinclair founded Green Events ten years ago to create more running and fitness events in the area and when she noticed there wasn’t a Polar Plunge in Fort Collins she decided it was time to add one to her list of yearly events. Now seven years and as many chilly January swims later, the event has continued to grow and Sinclair loves seeing the laughter on peoples faces as they take the plunge with their friends. “It usually ends with a smile because people are so happy they did it,” Sinclair says of their reactions. The event provides an excellent chance for people to kick off their new years fitness goals and remind themselves of what they’re capable of. Sharing a similar sentiment to that of Adams, Sinclair tells us, “If you can jump into cold water, you can do anything.”

F U T U R E B E AU T I F U L HOW TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY ARTICLE BY MARK KOEPPSELL

It’s 2022 now and while we may not have arrived yet at the futures predicted by The Jetsons or Star Trek, we should take a moment and consider how technology has changed our lives in just the last ten years. From our phones to smart home applications, and computers to the cars we drive. There is no denying the rapid advancement of technology around us and the impact it has on our day-to-day life. The same advancements have happened in the world of aesthetics. What is available today has never been available before. Gone are the days of needing to see a plastic surgeon to achieve a more youthful appearance, to help shape and contour the body, and simply – to feel better about – YOU!

16

S PA DAY | BEAU TY

There is little doubt that the phone apps that “enhance” our appearance are having a crossover to the medical aesthetics world as well. If my phone app can make me look that good – why wouldn’t I want to achieve that for my everyday appearance? The truth is, much of it actually CAN be achieved, with a little help from some aesthetics technology at your local med spa. It is safe to argue that there are two major outcomes technology advancements have created in the industry over recent years. One is the effectiveness of the treatments and the other is the decrease in pain and “downtime” associated with these treatments. Likely, the most important to our clients is how well these procedures produce results. If I pay for it, will CONTINUED >

it work? Each year the marketplace is delivering more and more devices that achieve a higher and higher level of satisfaction with the outcomes they deliver. For example, CoolSculpting has been around for more than 10 years now. But the CoolSculpting of today is not the same as what was originally launched. The technology has greatly improved both the effectiveness and the often discussed side-effects of this treatment, resulting in body contouring and shaping to eliminate fat bulges that are impossible to get rid of through gym time alone. Similarly, we are now able to provide non-invasive face lifts. Procedures that can literally erase a decade from your face. All without having to fly to Mexico for an extended stay to allow for recovery time from major cosmetic surgical procedures! Second is the pain associated with these procedures. Many clients feel that the outcome would be great, but the pain that comes with getting there isn’t worth it. For example, Laser Hair Removal today is a totally different pain experience than it was just five years ago. Not to mention the treatments are so much faster. Today clients at Xanadu Med Spa rate it at about a 2 for pain on a scale of 1-10, whereas they used to often rate it closer to a 7 or 8. An impressive improvement thus making the “worth-it” score for never having to shave or wax again much higher. Another phenomenal advancement comes in the form of being able to analyze your skin using high powered camera devices that actually measure everything like sebum, pore size, pigment damage, wrinkle creation, collagen, and hydration (just to name a few). Our ability to see below the dermas makes our team so much more effective as they can more accurately determine what treatments and products are going to be the biggest game changers for you. It’s a highly individualized approach that allows us to customize everything we do for each client. Technology is an incredibly important part of the modern-day medical aesthetics conversation. It is important that you understand the range of technologies available to you from your provider. It is also important to know and understand the age of the devices being used to treat you. Is there better technology that has entered the marketplace from another provider? Do your homework and ask questions. If you haven’t been to the med spa in a while, you might be surprised at what opportunities technology will have created for you. Taking Control of Your Fitness Mindset TIPS TO MAKE THIS YEARS RESOLUTIONS STICK

ARTICLE BY RACHEL PASTOR

The beginning of the new year is always a time when people are refreshing their goals and focusing on fitness and nutrition. I’ve seen it, again and again, working in the fitness industry for nearly 15 years. I say if you’ve got some new year momentum—run with it. However, I’ve also seen in my time that people have difficulty keeping promises to themselves. If you’ve got a New Year’s Resolution to work out five days a week and eat clean, that commitment only takes you so far. Maybe within a few weeks, you’re hitting snooze on your alarm instead of getting up early to exercise. I totally get it, I’ve been there! But that’s why I’ve found there is something missing from most fitness and nutrition programs, and many New Year’s Resolutions—it’s the mindset. I’m so convinced that mindset is key, that I recently wrote an ebook called “Unf**k Your Fitness Mindset.” CONTINUED >

“In the book, and in all of my programs, I explain the four pillars of a transformation that will last. I know that if you incorporate these four pillars in your fitness and nutrition goals for the new year, you’ll have success.”

In the book, and in all of my programs, I explain the four pillars of a transformation that will last. I know that if you incorporate these four pillars in your fitness and nutrition goals for the new year, you’ll have success.

ACCOUNTABILITY Keeping yourself accountable to a friend or coach will help you gain and maintain momentum. What I ultimately want for everyone to learn though, is the value of being accountable to yourself— keeping those promises about early morning workouts as consistently as if you’d made a promise to meet up with a friend. When you begin valuing the commitments you make yourself, that’s a game-changer!

FITNESS I am a huge fan of all movement! Whatever lights up your soul, that’s the movement you should do. Whether that’s group fitness, lifting weights, running, biking, dance, martial arts, yoga—you do you! I will add that if weight loss is your goal, it’s essential to have a balance of both cardio and strength training. When you’re doing cardio, you only burn calories

24

I NSP IR E D BY | FITNESS

during that activity. When you do strength training, you increase your metabolism and continue to burn calories long after the workout. Don’t miss strength training as you tackle your fitness goals!

NUTRITION Nutrition can be a tricky thing for many people, and a lot of us have baggage from years of yo-yo dieting and diet trends. What I recommend to anyone trying to lose weight is to begin tracking the macronutrients found in their food—fat, carbohydrates, and protein. Tracking macros is superior to counting calories because a piece of pizza is going to work with your body differently than steak, a baked potato, or a salad with the same calorie count. You can calculate the ideal macros for your body and goals for free online by simply searching for “macros calculators.” Of course, I get a lot more nuanced with my coaching clients, but it’s no secret formula. You can figure it out and track your macros on free apps like My Fitness Pal. “Unf**k Your Fitness Mindset” has a whole section called Macros 101 if you want to dive deeper. CONTINUED >

NEUROPLASTICITY Mindset is the main thing most people miss when they’re tackling a goal to get healthy. We all have unhealthy mindsets developed through growing up, past trauma, relationships, the media, and our life experiences. Neuroplasticity is the idea that we can develop new and healthier pathways in our brains, kicking bad mindsets to the curb. You can read more about it in my book if you’re curious. You do have the ability to be your highest self. The work of changing your mindset is the most important element of a transformation that lasts, and I’m living proof of it! So, as you plan to tackle your fitness goals for the new year, don’t neglect the impact of your mindset. And if you’re curious to learn more about neuroplasticity and changing your mindset, check out my ebook, “Unf**k Your Fitness Mindset.”

VIKING CRUISES RIVERS, OCEANS, AND MORE

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY IRENE MIDDLEMAN THOMAS

En route to the airport, after a weeklong, I-don’t-want-toleave Viking Ocean Cruise in and around the island nation of Bermuda, I lamented that we hadn’t had the time to visit St. George, the historic former capital. I had been told it was delightful, historic and charming. As we departed the transport van, I asked the driver various questions about what we had seen while driving to the airport, and mentioned my sadness at not seeing St. George. “Well, what time is your flight?” he asked. “Come back up, I have time if you do!” My husband and I, astonished at the generous offer, climbed into the van, happily. Serendipity and friendliness had a lot to do with our Bermuda experience, and the type of drivers and excursion guides that Viking selects is indicative of the kind of quality and detail they consistently provide to their guests. Oh, and yes, St. George WAS indeed delightful, historic and charming, and is certainly a don’t miss. I’d been on four Viking cruises - three rivers and one ocean, before this one in August, 2021. I was used to outstanding staff, delectable and varied cuisine, sumptuous staterooms, intelligently designed, creative excursions and superb onboard programs. The readers of Condé Nast Traveler have voted Viking both the #1 River Cruise Line and the #1 Ocean Cruise Line in the 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards. Viking, now 24-years-old, has its mission statement as “Viking will never try to be all things to everyone. We provide an intimate, small ship experience for the intelligent and engaged traveler who values enrichment over extravagance. We promise you The Thinking Person’s Travel Experience. You can count on more time in port to explore the world’s great destinations; thoughtful enrichment programs that open doors to diverse cultures; and like-minded adults to share the journey.” We have found that statement to be accurate on each of our Viking cruises. Viking ships are state-of-the-art with an elegant Scandinavian design, superb and varied cuisine and outstanding entertainment and enrichment on board - even planetariums on ocean ships with attending astronomers, as well as exceptional excursion options. Viking cruises are not for those who desire an all-you-can-drink party experience, although beer and wine are included with lunch and dinner and for a nominal fee. The line boasts that you will not find casinos, children nor umbrella drinks, rather, you will find an “atmosphere that is serene and refined.” Bermuda, a tiny island country closer to North Carolina than to the Caribbean, chose Viking to bring in tourists this summer due to the cruise line’s protocols and responsible reaction to CDC regulations and recommendations. There are also several other island and tropical destinations which are definite. Viking is not only a European river cruise line. Indeed, the company goes to all seven continents with cruises ranging from 8 days to 245. Viking offers river cruises, ocean cruises, and the newly launched Expedition cruises to Antarctica, the Arctic, Canada and the Great Lakes in the U.S. With Viking, you can choose to partake in the included shore excursions, or opt for additional excursions or simply explore on your own. It’s not just the big things with Viking that people enjoy. It is the small touches too. the hot, steamed washcloths handed to passengers returning from excursions. The bookmarks, placed beside books in the staterooms. The baristas who remember how one likes their coffee. The almost 1:2 employee to passenger ratio. We still keep in touch with some folks we met on cruises - with such small passenger counts, it is likely to run into folks over and over and develop relationships. The temporary closeness a small cruise brings to its passengers is special and makes the vacation a much richer experience. Who knows, maybe we’ll meet again on another Viking Cruise... www.vikingcruises.com
