October 2022 PUBLISHER S
Jahna Eichel | jahna.eichel@citylifestyle.com Jason Eichel | jason.eichel@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
This issue shares one of the most exciting encounters we’ve had to date. Words cannot describe the feeling you have when on the other end of the telephone, is a legend. I remember listening to the song “our house” by Crosby Stills Nash & Young as a kid. It may even be the first song in my musical memory. The idea that someone as talented and renowned as Graham Nash, would sit and share his thoughts on art with us, is just an incredible feeling that I am so honored to share with you. It leads us to truly sit in gratitude and share our “why” with you, dear readers. Since its inception, Fort Collins City Lifestyle has devoted itself to publishing “the good news,” of our community. Consider us the chief discoverers of what is newest and best in Northern Colorado. Taking inspiration from the incredible people, places, and organizations that make our slice of Colorado heaven so desirable, our stories encompass art, fashion, music, business, charitable giving, and more. We write about what we love, not as critics, but as participants in our community. Furthermore, we hope that you will enjoy what you read in our pages—most of all—that you’ll write in and tell us what you think. You love your favorite blogs, but you also know when to turn off your devices. You read your favorite magazines faithfully—and you love Northern Colorado as much as we do. We say there is plenty to interest us in the writing of our moment, and not only in the writing but also in the photography that says more than words ever could. Everywhere we look, whether it’s the new painting, film, or newly discovered hobby, we find beauty sufficient unto the present day, the only one we’ve got. Graham Nash 1972 While Writing "Camil" (San Francisco) By Joel
Graham Nash Follows His Heart A Journey Through Music & Photography ARTICLE BY JAHNA EICHEL | PHOTOGRAPHY BY GRAHAM NASH, JOEL BERNSTEIN
Legendary artist Graham Nash's reach spans generations. As a founding member of both the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash, Graham is a two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee who has seen rock history unfold at some of the industry's most profound moments. Graham may be an extraordinary Grammy Award® winning artist but at the end of the day, he's a self-described “simple man”. Nash was inducted twice into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, for his work with Crosby Stills & Nash and his work as a solo artist. Now in 2022, comes Graham Nash: Live, a unique project where he revisits those first two classic solo
albums, Songs For Beginners and Wild Tales. Nash was joined on stage by a seven-piece band led by his longtime collaborators, Shane Fontayne (guitar and vocals) and Todd Caldwell (keyboards and vocals), The album was mixed by Grammy Award® winner Kevin Killen and mastered by Grammy Award® winner Bob Ludwig. If that isn't enough to keep Nash, 80, busy. He's also released his first book of photography which is a birdseye view of those milestone moments of rock history that Graham was a part of. I'll admit, I was incredibly nervous to interview him but his calm, cool, and collected demeanor allowed me to see the "simple man" CONTINUED >

for the wise and down-to-earth megastar he is. His biggest piece of advice to humankind - is to just follow your heart. LS: "Is there significance in the timing of the release of your book of photography? GN: "No significance, Joni (Joni Mitchell) wanted me to share the images and pushed me to show them. Joni put me in touch with the gallery she worked with in Japan where her paintings are.

LS: "Back when you took the photos, did you know you'd share them one day?" GN: "For me, I've been a photographer longer than a musician. I was faced with many surreal moments in my life and prefer to be invisible when taking photos. The best ones I've ever taken were when my friends never knew I was there." LS: "What has it been like to relive those relationships and memories?" GN: "I observe people who are opening the book for the first time and notice them start to smile. That is the reason I wanted to share the book". LS:" It takes a lot of work and inspiration to continue to create, can you share with us what keeps that fire burning for you?" GN: "Follow your heart, have the desire to say something. I write what happens to me, that's what I want to do. My songs are real and from my life. Real songs are more meaningful. I follow my life and my heart, I don't force anything. I've been very lucky to find success and thank my mother and father who encouraged me to love music and rock and roll." LS: "Back to your long career in music, what was it like to re-record your first album live?" GN: "I've worked with Bob for 50 years, he worked on these songs in the 70s and said to me that I've been singing better than ever and wanted to record them live with me". LS: "Releasing a live album of songs from 1971 and 1973 and now performing them

live, these songs feel incredibly relevant and meaningful in 2022. Are you enjoying reliving those moments again on tour?" GN: “I'm grateful and honored that my music has lasted for decades but ultimately I'm pissed off that my music is still relevant today, we've not learned our lesson." LS: "Many of the songs are about your relationship with Joni Mitchell, and her photos are ever present in the book- any chance of a duet now that Joni is performing again?" GN: "You never know, it's been an amazing journey she's been on with her healthcare issues. Even though we were lovers and friends, I have incredible respect for Joni as an artist". LS: "Any advice for musicians hoping to have a long career in music?" GN: "Follow your heart. Your heart knows what's good and what's bad. More than Motorcycles HOW THE COMBAT VETERANS MOTORCYCLE ASSOCIATION DEFENDS AND SUPPORTS THOSE WHO DEFENDED OUR COUNTRY
ARTICLE BY TYLER WESTON PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY CVMA
Not like your average hobby group, the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) is very different from even the groups they share the most similarities with. For starters, they are not a Motorcycle Club, they’re a 501c3 non-profit organization, who’s members happen to also be motorcycle enthusiasts. At first glance this difference may seem small, perhaps even unapparent, but it’s a major part of the groups guiding principles and is intended to help them combat the sometimes negative connotations that can be associated with motorcycle groups. As an association, rather than a club, they don’t maintain any sort of clubhouse and all of their meetings are held in public view. With a mission like theirs, there isn’t anything they need to hide anyways.

“We have one mission,” Jay Pilger, the local chapter - CVMA 3-6 - Public Relations Officer explains, “it’s vets helping vets.” — Jay Pilger
“We have one mission,” Jay Pilger, the local chapter - CVMA 3-6 - Public Relations Officer explains, “it’s vets helping vets.” It’s a mission that Pilger, a former Sergeant in the U.S. Army, and the rest of the organization take seriously. So much so that they ritually empty their chapter's bank account at the end of each year. Whether that means they’re buying food and gifts to support a veteran family through the holidays, making improvements to a disabled vet’s home, or distributing those funds to other veteran-centric nonprofits who can get more bang for the buck - CVMA is entirely about giving and money in the bank means there’s more to give. While there are a lot of veteran-oriented nonprofit organizations that are doing important work in the area, CVMA has a boots-on-the-ground, quick-to-act sort of approach that drew Pilger into work with them specifically. It was at one of his first meetings with the group that it was decided to build a wheelchair access ramp for a vet’s house. Within only a few days materials were bought, the project designed and built, and a ramp installed. “That really inspired me to get involved,” Pilger says of the group's rapid response approach to addressing that need. It’s much more than that of course. Every CVMA member is a veteran or the
28
M UST SE E | L IFE + CU LTURE
spouse of a veteran and having a tight-knit community that understands the experiences that are precursors to that title can be a major difference maker. “It’s a support system,” says Pilger. Whether they’ve run out of gas on a long trip, could use expert advice or professional resources, or just need to talk to someone with a shared understanding, there’s a national network of people ready to respond and take care of one another. Pilger himself says he often finds himself helping members with their business taxes, since leaving the Army he and his wife have built a successful business providing tax services. This year, in what Pilger sees as evidence of their growth and active pursuit of community involvement, CVMA 3-6 was asked to lead the first group of riders participating in this year's Realities Ride and Rally, the world's largest poker run and a major fundraiser benefiting Realities for Children. If you’d like to learn more about CVMA, donate, or know a veteran who could use their help, Pilger says to reach out on their social media or visit the website at combatvet.us to find more information on your local chapter. Or, you can just “approach any member wearing that patch.”

VAMPIRES KISS: INGREDIENTS 1 ½ ounces Vicieux vodka 1 ounce* Chambord 1/2 ounce 100% unsweetened cranberry juice (not sweetened or cranberry juice cocktail) 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice 1/2 ounce grenadine 1 small dry ice cube, optional
INSTRUCTIONS: Make the drink: Add the vodka, Chambord, unsweetened cranberry juice, lemon juice, and grenadine to a cocktail shaker. Add 2 handfuls regular ice cubes and shake until cold. Strain the drink into the prepared glass. Break the dry ice into 1-inch chunks (if using): Do this as close to the time you’ll be serving the drinks as possible, though you can buy the dry ice a few hours in advance. Start by dropping the plastic bag with the dry ice on the ground several times to allow it break into large chunks. Remember never to touch the dry ice with your bare hands! Put on goggles and gloves. Use a chisel to break the dry ice into smaller pieces using a screwdriver or ice pick. The ideal size is 1/2-inch to 1-inch chunks that are large enough to sink to the bottom of the drink, but small enough to disappear in a few minutes. Wrap the small chunks in a towel and place them in a cooler with the top off until you’re ready to serve the drinks. Do not place the dry ice in the freezer. Add the dry ice: Using tongs (do not touch the dry ice!), add a 1/2inch to 1-inch chunk of dry ice to the glass, which will sink to the bottom and immediately make a smoking effect. The ice cube will disappear in about 5 minutes. Do not drink the dry ice! Wait until the cube disappears before enjoying your drink OCTOB ER 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/FO RTC O L L I N S

Meet Our Team Making an impact requires passion, drive, creativity, and a curator's mindset. It takes a team of incredible people to not only put together a beautiful publication every single month but to also serve our partners and our community in a multitude of ways. We've kept busy over here at Fort Collins City Lifestyle and now that we're also the proud owners of Loveland & South Lifestyle we think this is the perfect time to introduce everyone who makes our team so special.
