CHICAGO REVISITED

That first afternoon, we walked over to Navy Pier, the city’s top attraction, and people-watched. Completed in 1916, the pier stretches into Lake Michigan, and hosts fireworks displays, live music, theatre, and cruises setting sail daily. Our favorite, however, was Crystal Gardens, which we happened upon: This one-acre indoor garden oasis, filled with some 80 live palm trees and other tropical plants, delightful leapfrog fountains and hanging twinkling “I DON’T EVEN LIKE RELISH, BUT I LOVE THIS,” MY DAUGH-

Here, we found upscale shops, restaurants, hotels and many top attractions, such as the historic Chicago Water Tower, the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower, the Wrigley Building skyscraper and the 100-story John Hancock Center. The hotel was recently designated a Chicago landmark and underwent a multi-million dollar renovation. Spacious rooms and suites, with a cream and taupe color scheme, crown moldings and a 1920’s vibe, the Allerton was a perfect home away from home for our short stay. We decided, after much discussion, to walk the streets and experience the Chicago vibe, rather than visit the various renowned and excellent museums. Those would wait for another time, or maybe a winter visit. Now, in the glorious summer, best to take advantage of the surprisingly lovely temps and stroll. And we did stroll and stroll, so much that at night, we’d plop into our beds and immediately drop off.

BREW M A S TE R S BINDLE COFFEE For Andrew Webb, coffee wasn’t necessarily something he knew he wanted to pursue early on. Having bounced around from job to job he eventually landed at a Starbucks, his first coffee job. After four years there, with the encouragement of a co-worker, Webb struck out on his own. “What’s kept me in coffee is the idea that coffee is a vehicle for everything else,” Webb says of the passion he’s discovered for the business, “beyond the caffeine it just brings people together.” That focus on the community aspect of a coffee shop has been fundamental to his approach from the very beginning. With that philosophical approach, considering coffee as an essential one

HARBINGER COFFEE When Johnathan Jarrow first got into the coffee business he was just trying to work his way through school. He already enjoyed the staple breakfast beverage of course, but found himself enjoying the industry as well. As he learned more about the high end coffee business and the science behind it he felt he could improve on what was being done, though his peers didn’t necessarily agree. “They were telling me things like, ‘no it’s all about your special, fancy pour technique,’ and, ‘you can’t use science to determine how a good cup tastes,’” Jarrow says of when he first began developing his own methods. He didn’t take those words to heart, of course, and when he competed in the first annual Brewers Cup in Chicago in 2009, he won. From there he began roasting coffee for a small company and continued to hone his skills, working towards opening his own shop.

Johnathan Jarrow

“I wanted to start Harbinger when I was in Chicago,” Jarrow tells us, “but I missed the mountains and I really thought there was more opportunity for me out here.” So, in 2012 he moved back to the front range and opened his first coffee stand, occupying space in

maximizing the success of transitions TIPS TO EMBRACE CHANGE AND MAKE THE MOST OF LIFE’S TRANSITIONAL PHASES

ABOU T: “YOUR LIFE IS A STORY OF TRANSITION. You are always leaving one chapter behind while moving on to the next.” – Anonymous In the midst of change, reflect on the power of transitions and the next phases of your life. They can be unexpected, or the kind that forces us not to settle or to be stretched. When it comes to big change, we tend to give too much power to fear, worrying about all the things we lost, letting go of the familiar, or the “what if’s”. Here are three tips to maximize the success of transitions.

WOR DS I LIV E BY:

“Your life is a story of transition. You are always leaving one chapter behind while moving on to the next.” – Anonymous

TIPS:

+ TIP 1 - CELEBRATE YOUR WINS Write down all the wins with your transition and stay focused on them. Does the win bring new leadership skills, experiences, relationships, or financial well-being? Keep visualizing the wins and use it as a source of power on your journey through your new season.

+ TIP 2 - RELEASE YOUR NEGATIVITY Achieving greatness requires all your energy and emotions. You cannot invest energy in doubt or “what if’s.” When you find yourself in negativity, exchange the “what if’s” with positive energy.

+ TIP 3 EMBRACE YOUR TRANSITIONAL JOURNEY Life is not a straight safe line we are meant to move through seasons, this is a move to the path of our destiny and purpose. Embrace the next big journey of your life.

Many people resist change, perhaps due to perceived risk that change will not be beneficial in the end. Others resist change because it’s comfortable and familiar to stay with what you know. No matter how hard you fight it, change happens. So, take the leap and embrace the new seasons of your life, these milestones help define who you are and who you will become in the future.
