MAY BE. Our slates have been wiped, and 2019 gives us 12 new months to inspire ourselves and each other. Every January, I try to take the time to admire those little "wins" and learn from mistakes or shortfalls in order to create a foundation for a better, more successful, more charitable new year. I challenge you to plan ahead this year and set aside time and space to do something for yourself, to take care of YOU to the best of your abilities. While diet and exercise are paramount to physical health, this month's issue focuses more on what's at the heart of wellness: self-care, personal growth and taking the time to experience our community. We asked local experts for their advice on selfcare, the best books for personal growth, workout routines and so much more. We at Fort Collins Lifestyle encourage you to live your best life by taking care of

MASTER YOUR ATHLEISURE STYLE WITH HELP FROM THE STYLISTS AT TRUNK CLUB

WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH AND FITNESS TRENDS, KEEPING UP WITH THE EVER-CHANGING INFORMATION THAT’S OUT THERE CAN BE DIFFICULT. “This one move will change your legs forever;” “You’ll never eat these foods again after you read this story;” or, our favorite, “A glass of wine a day can help you live longer.” When you’re busy juggling the latest workout app craze or cleaning out your refrigerator only to find out a week later that those items are good for you again, it can get overwhelming. So, when you want a break from it all but don’t want to give up feeling sporty, take the trends from your yoga mat to your closet instead and stock up on athleisure wear. As the stylists at Trunk Club, a Nordstrom Company, put it, athleisure isn’t necessarily about working out—it’s designed for a lifestyle. Incorporating chic, comfy silhouettes with sporty pieces gets you through the day with a fashionable vibe you’ll want to sport—no pun intended—on the regular! For more style tips and to get your own trunk today, visit TrunkClub.com.

01

B A SI C U P G R A D E If a fuss-free outfit is what you’re looking for, keep it simple! The Trunk Club stylists recommend faux-leather leggings and a scoop-hem tank as an easy way to take the essentials up a notch. Finish off your look with a lightweight jacket, a baseball cap and a backpack with unique detailing for just the right amount of edge.

02

E A SE D U P If you’re looking to reflect your laid-back outlook but need to appear put-together, consider pairing a sporty logo tank with cropped wide-leg pants. Pro tip: Keep your outfit fresh with pieces in a cool, earth-tone color palette, and then bring it all together with trendy accessories with unique detailing.

therefore it is a movement that those of us free of injury should have some ability to perform. We don’t need to lift a lot of weight or work with great intensity, but we should be able to perform the task at hand without pain or discomfort and with full functionality. The first step in performing the conventional deadlift is to set your feet up with a shoulder-width stance, making sure to evenly distribute your weight between your heel and the ball of your foot. Once your stance is set, grab the bar so that your arms are straight and run right outside of your shins. In order to properly engage your back during the lift, point your elbows backwards and squeeze them into the sides of your body while grabbing the bar. With a tight core, flat back and activated glutes, pull the weight off the floor by bringing the hips forward and the shoulders back. At the top of the lift, make sure you

can feel your glute, back and core muscles tightly engaged before returning the weight to the floor in a controlled fashion. Most mistakes that happen in the deadlift occur before any weight leaves the ground. ELISE RIGNEY AND HER PRACTICES, Impact Chiropractic and Impact Medical, have been a part of the Northern Colorado community since 2012. We sat down with Dr. Rigney and asked her how she tackles it all with her growing practice, two daughters, a husband and a full social calendar. Her answer? Self-care. We've been hearing this word thrown around a lot lately, but it's an important piece of what keeps us, us. We overwork, cancel our yoga classes, cut back on socializing and even skip a few meals from time to time. This fast-paced lifestyle can take a toll on our physical, mental and emotional well-being. To keep up with this Energizer Bunny way of working, we often put self-care on the back burner. More often than not, it takes a wake-up call to notice the toll this kind of lifestyle takes on our lives. No matter how indulgent it may sound, self-care is crucial for our physical, emotional and mental well-being. Dr. Rigney's self-care rituals are all preventative and holistic so that her mind, body and social health are all taken care of.

A Midwife’s Tips on Staying Healthy During Pregnancy ARTICLE JAHNA EICHEL AND ALTHEA HRDLICHKA PHOTOGRAPHY DD WEYHRICH PHOTOGRAPHY

EXPECTANT MOTHERS ARE OFTEN TASKED WITH MAKING MANY IMPORTANT LIFESTYLE CHANGES DURING PREGNANCY SUCH AS DIET, EXERCISE AND THAT LAUNDRY LIST OF "NOT TO-DO'S." We sat down with local homebirth midwife Althea Hrdlichka to break down her most important tips on experiencing a happy and healthy pregnancy and postpartum journey. Althea is a Certified Professional Midwife serving Northern Colorado, a mother of four, a wife and the founder of Mother’s Life Tea. Althea has attended more than 300 births, working closely with midwives and doctors and helping care for women and their families during their special time. She's worked with women through both natural and medicated births and has assisted with both hospital and home births. Here are her tips for ensuring a happy pregnancy, delivery and postpartum experience.

1. CHOOSE A BIRTH TEAM THAT HELPS YOU FEEL EMPOWERED AND SUPPORTED. Physical and emotional comfort during pregnancy is perhaps the most important aspect of having a healthy and safe birthing experience. If you surround yourself with those who respect you and your birthing choices, your pregnancy and labor will not only progress better, but also fewer complications are likely to arise. This also significantly decreases your chances for emotional instability, unnecessary medical interventions, a Cesarean birth (C-section) or postpartum depression.

30

Fort Collins Lifestyle | January 2019

2. LOW-IMPACT EXERCISE THROUGHOUT YOUR PREGNANCY Pregnancy is a physically challenging time. Women who have prepared their bodies throughout their pregnancy with light exercise, yoga and other low-impact aerobics have an easier time not only giving birth but also heal more rapidly than those with a sedentary lifestyle. Althea suggests having a good routine of light cardio, strengthening pelvic muscles (such as squats) and modified yoga. Althea suggests using caution or avoiding all abdominal exercises due to the risk of diastasis recti, the separation of the abdominal muscles.

Expectant mothers are often tasked with making many important lifestyle changes during pregnancy such as diet, exercise and that laundry list of “not to-do’s.”

3. PAIR IT WITH PROTEIN This big P word can help prevent or decrease your chances of having morning sickness—or let’s be honest, all-day sickness!) Protein in pregnancy helps to stabilize your blood sugar and keep you fueled all day so that your tank never goes empty. Carbs and veggies are necessary, but to help you feel better overall, pair everything you put into your mouth with protein.

4. WATER: JUST DRINK IT! We know, everyone knows water is important, but it’s a little different in pregnancy as to why. Being dehydrated can cause more nausea, exhaustion and premature contractions. In addition, water helps to rid the toxins from your kidneys and liver so you have a healthier, uncomplicated pregnancy overall.

5. PRENATAL VITAMINS THAT ARE PURELY MADE AND FREE OF CHEMICAL ADDITIVES Vitamins are supposed to be in support of your body’s natural ability to grow and nourish your baby. Using a prenatal vitamin free of dyes, color or chemical additives is just as important as other dietary changes you make during your pregnancy. Althea recommends Standard Process prenatal vitamins. High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become that Way by Brendon Berchard Based on one of the largest surveys ever conducted on high performers, the book reveals that just six habits move the needle the most in helping you succeed. Who knew? I love the self-assessment test and the clear and concise messaging on how to hone in and move that needle in an authentic way.

The Messy Middle: Finding Your Way through the Hardest and Most Crucial Part of Any Bold Adventure by Scott Belsky Finding a book that puts into words the exact place your business is in is a tall order. There are no press releases for businesses in "operational mode," and creating your own "little wins" as the author suggests is one of the greatest pieces of business advice I've heard in a long while.
