What does “Explore” mean to you?
We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. And I admit - I fall into the trap sometimes too. The trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty.
But the truth is - that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life.
We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered and trust to be built.
In the last few months, I've really been analyzing my relationship with my kid, how our family operates as a unit and what we love spending our time doing. The way I made this more clear, was to first focus on the things that I don't love spending time on. For our family - it’s screens. For yours, it may be too many busy weeknights away from home or not enough dinners around the table together. But I've noticed that "adventures" and “exploration” don't even have to be something big and crazy. It can be playing a board game out on the patio, walking a new trail or going out to find a fun cookie place we've never been to before in a different part of town.
We hope that this issue encourages you to make room for exploration. To prioritize time away from the regular schedule of life. To lose yourself on a trail or in a book. To book that trip you’ve been thinking about, to make time for the things that matter most to you but often come last on the calendar.

THE FOLSOM PRO RODEO: WHERE WESTERN TRADITION AND FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT UNITE
Saddle Up for Summer Fun
ARTICLE BY JESSICA SHONA-STEWART | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JACOB CANTU WITH VOYAGE CREATIVE
“The rodeo, deeply rooted in cowboy values derived from Folsom’s rich western history, is a testament to the authenticity of this event and its traditions.”
Since its establishment in 1960, the Folsom Pro Rodeo has been a cherished event, welcoming residents of Folsom and neighboring communities with open arms. Inspired by the city’s Western heritage like the Gold Rush and the Pony Express, this annual tradition has evolved into a family-friendly celebration of Western entertainment and traditional rodeo customs.
As part of the 4th of July weekend festivities, families and individuals of all ages are invited to come together and experience the thrill and excitement of a sanctioned rodeo event courtesy of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PCRA). The event takes place at Dan Russell Rodeo Arena on Stafford St., a central location between Folsom City Lions Park and the Johnny Cash Trail near the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary. The arena was named after Dan Russell Sr., one of the founders of the Folsom Pro Rodeo in 1960, and owner of the Russell Ranch, which was initiated in the 1860s.
The rodeo, deeply rooted in cowboy values derived from Folsom’s rich western history, is a testament to the authenticity of this event and its traditions. Throughout the years, the rodeo has launched its event coinciding with a concert and picnic at City Park where attendees anticipate the upcoming days of celebration and entertainment. Last year’s concert, named the ‘Ride into The Music Festival’ hosted over 4,000 attendees, marking it as the city’s biggest country music festival. Other music genres can also be heard throughout the event as well. The concert, included
in your rodeo ticket, is family-friendly and includes a free lunch. What could be better than a fun concert, great food, and a community gathering before a big event like the Folsom Pro Rodeo?
The Folsom Pro Rodeo is known for its array of exciting events that draw anticipation year after year. One of the most popular is “mutton-busting,” an activity where children volunteer to enter the arena and hold onto a sheep for as long as they can. For extra safety, helmets are provided. If one of your kids wants to participate in this fun-filled activity, be sure to sign up the day registration opens as it fills up quickly. Your kids can have the time of their lives being a part of one of Folsom’s biggest rodeo traditions. Other events seen at the rodeo include barrel racing, bull riding, steer wrestling, and much more. Another fun activity is the carnival that is set up in the parking lot for everyone to enjoy during the rodeo. Games, food trucks, and vendors line the lot for added summer entertainment. After the rodeo, everyone gathers to watch the spectacular fireworks show that lights up Folsom's night sky.
Enjoy this year’s rodeo even longer with a fourth day added where the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office collaborates with the rodeo event to present their first-ever pro-am rodeo.
Grab your cowboy hat and boots and be sure to come out for one of Folsom's longest traditions and greatest summertime activities. July 3rd,4th and 5th.

CRAWDADS ON THELAK E
A NEW PLACE IN A FAMILIAR SPACE
ARTICLE BY JESSICA SHONA-STEWART

“It just has such good ties to the community,” Shults said, “I just couldn’t pass it up.”
If you like one of Sacramento's favorite restaurants, Crawdads on the River, you're going to love Folsom's new restaurant, Crawdads on the Lake. A new local hotspot is in town, replacing the long-lived Cliff House and bringing a fresh perspective to one of the best views in Folsom.
Crawdads on the Lake is a new addition to the Folsom food scene that Trevor Shults is excited to be a part of. After a long search for a second location, they finally chose this scenic spot in the heart of Folsom. For Shults, he said this move was sentimental, having fond memories of going to Cliff House and growing up in the area. “It just has such good ties to the community,” Shults said, “I just couldn’t pass it up.”
The owners of the new location are hyping up residents to come by and check out
the view, after all, they love to say it’s “on the house”. Shults said they've expanded the deck and built a new bar in the center of the restaurant, to further ensure visitors will have great food, drinks, music, and views.
In addition to remodeling the restaurant, their menu has been revamped as well with four to five of their existing items newly modified. At Crawdads on the Lake, you’ll see menu items like their Chowder Fries, Thai Kale Salad, and Mussels with Chorizo. Don’t forget to attend one of the restaurant’s many live music events hosted this summer, and bring your families with you to this family-friendly establishment. Come by and cool down from the summer heat at one of Folsom’s newest local gems. CrawdadsontheLake.com

ADVENTURE AWAITS CLOSE TO HOME
ARTICLE BY LISA WOLF AND JOHNNY VALENZUELA
PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISA WOLF
In and around Folsom boasts so many amazing places to visit and explore with a focus on the natural beauty of our area. You don't have to travel far away to feel like you are far from home. Just a few miles from your computer screen is a magical place that will take your breath away, envelop you in nature, and nourish your soul. It's called Montauk, an upscale camping resort in El Dorado County.
Nestled above Folsom Lake, this hidden treasure offers all the comforts of home, a comfortable bed, lighting, bathroom, outdoor shower, and places to cook, without sacrificing the natural beauty that is literally all around you with scenic views for miles. The location is only 9 miles from our home on Folsom but took us 45 minutes to get there as you drive up to Highway 49 and then cut back again towards the lake. The drive alone is its own adventure with so many add-on opportunities to explore places like Sutter Creek, Auburn, and Cool (and the area after Cool - which had a sign that read, "Beyond Cool"). The drive is full of twist and turns and things to see along the way like cows, llamas, goats, horses, turtles, and a property that the guys from American Pickers would screech to a halt to see featuring giant vintage gas station and restaurant signs. For a split second, my husband thought there actually was a Kentucky Fried Chicken way out there.
The private Montauk campsite is hidden (blink and you'll miss the Montauk Vista sign that takes you onto the gravel and dirt road to the location) and well thought out with much attention to detail and comfort with the focus still being on the surroundings. I wondered how the owners found themselves out there and decided to embark on this adventure. Here's the inside scoop.
In 2019, Ann and Chris Dillender, along with Johnny Valenzuela, were dedicated volunteers organizing community events for a small community in El Dorado County. Both Dillender and Valenzuela served as volunteer firefighters and were board members of an organization managing a lake and campground owned by the local Fire Department. They often dreamed of starting a business related to camping, and slowly but surely, that idea began to take shape.
“We honor the history of this place, which was so easily forgotten, and often find remnants of what once was here.”
Ann, with her keen eye for design and attention to detail, Chris, an imaginative builder, and Johnny, who brings marketing and business development experience, combined their unique skills and shared passion for community organization to bring their vision to life.
After years of exploring various properties in El Dorado County, Chris discovered the perfect location for their venture. Captivated by the stunning views, diverse topography, and majestic ambiance, Chris knew this was the place to bring their dream to life. Ann, Chris, and Johnny visited the property the weekend after Chris found the listing and the process of purchasing the land was underway. Properties near accessible water and away from large populations and neighbors are hard to come by, but they found a great place that is far enough from cities and development yet close enough to be accessible compared to other campgrounds.
During the acquisition process, the previous owner provided historical documents that unveiled fascinating insights about the land. It was once the site of a bustling mining settlement with several thousand people employed by the Montauk Consolidated Mining Company, run by a German immigrant, Jacob Zentgraf. The settlement had a schoolhouse, and a large stone structure from that era still stands today and can be seen on your drive in.
"We honor the history of this place, which was so easily forgotten, and often find remnants of what once was here," Chris shared. "Naming the road Montauk Vista Road was a crucial step in preserving this history for future generations."
Looking to the future, Montauk aims to enhance the visitor experience with an observation deck at the
summit, offering breathtaking 360-degree views across Northern California, from the Sierras to the Coastal Range and beyond. Additionally, Montauk is committed to fostering local creativity by hosting vendor events that feature artisans, boutique brands, and artists who can showcase their work in a picturesque setting at the foot of a historic mine shaft, surrounded by moss-covered rock walls and shaded by oaks. In addition to the generous individual campsites, some sites would be perfect for gathering. One had a large rock circle perfect for a group campfire. A retreat, reunion, or gathering of any kind would be amazing at Montauk.
It doesn't just stop at your luxury camping site, there's so much to do nearby. Enjoy a walk around the different campsites to experience the unique views from each location, borrow one of their kayaks (we brought our paddle boards), and park inches from shore to drop into a less traveled, serene, and scenic part of Folsom Lake. Bring your camera to take photos of the wildlife, butterflies, and birds. Our shore on the property had a gaggle of geese and their goslings close by.
I encourage you to visit Montauk whether for one of their artisanal events or a few blissful nights away. The view from our campsite had an eagle with its giant nest just above the grand view of Folsom Lake and beyond that, we could see to our house (past the levee). We were so close, but we were absolutely in a different world. Montauk was magical. Montauk.camp
