February - Love Local Issue I don’t know about you, but this time of year I am always torn. I find myself torn between resisting the commercialization of another greeting card holiday and indulging in all the sweet excuses to enjoy the season. To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? I usually land somewhere a little in between. We’ll each arrive at different answers based on our preferences and personalities, but what we hold in common is an opportunity to make sure those around us know we love them. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we celebrate and highlight what’s to love in your local community. Valentine's Day holds a special place in my heart, as it is also my Father's birthday. It has always been a day of celebration with my loved ones. I love to decorate our home with red and hearts galore as a month-long reminder of the love in our lives. While we teeter between the chill of January Winter and the excitement of Spring, we hope you’ll be inspired to take a moment to come together with the people in your life - the ones in your home and on your street, in your neighborhood, and your community. “Love local” means your local businesses, those in your community - but it also means loving what is near. Those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Sociology or your favorite local coffee shop and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine from Willamette Wineworks and some cheese from More than Olives and indulge in a movie night. We’ve always believed what we can do together is so much more than what we can do apart. We continue to see that demonstrated through the many stories told in these pages month after month. Thanks for letting us be a part of the life you’re building, whatever that may look like. We hope that we inspire you to love it just a bit more than you did before. Happy February!

As you step into Sutter Street Theatre, the up-close and personal stage feels intimate and warm while buzzing with the magic of past performances. The charming and comfortable theatre allows audience members to feel like they are close enough to be a part of the show as performers utilize the full stage, walkways, and entrances to bring the entire theatre to life. Being close enough to the performers to see their emotions and energy allows for a genuine escape into the productions, as audiences get caught up in the magic of the stories. Our family has been swept away on imaginative adventures numerous times as audience members at Sutter Street Theatre, and our children attend their Intro to Theatre classes in the “Annex”, where they have developed what will hopefully be a lifelong love of performing. The opportunities to be in the audience and work towards stepping on the stage

at Sutter Street Theatre are plentiful for our local community, and I encourage you to grab a seat or step onstage to immerse yourself in this local treasure. Connie Mockenhaupt shares, "We're just so grateful to the City of Folsom and the Folsom Historic District for welcoming us and the theatre to Sutter Street all those years ago. It has truly been phenomenal to watch the Sutter Street Theatre grow and expand as community members, students and actors alike pass through its doors. Now as we enter our 19th season, we can't wait to see it thrive for many years to come. We're not going anywhere!" Through Sutter Street Theatre’s class offerings, budding performers of all ages can learn the art of being on stage to gain a love of performing. The opportunity to get on stage and work through one of the most dreaded and common fears, public speaking, is a valuable skill to acquire, which strengthens communication skills and interpersonal relationships and develops confidence. Sutter Street Theatre has a strong emphasis on education and offers a wide range of learning opportunities that cater to artists of all ages, interests, and experience levels. Learning opportunities include Tap Dance, Musical Theatre Dance, Musical Theatre, Children’s Intro to Theatre (ages 5-7, “Rising Stars”, and ages 8-11, “Bright Stars”), Improve for Young People, and Private Acting Lessons. They also host a variety of intensive workshops for children and teens where seasoned professionals teach theatre techniques to build stage confidence in a safe and enjoyable environment while working toward mainstage performances. Over the

past 18 seasons, productions have earned recognition in the form of nominations, awards, grants, and press on the local and national level, including features in the Folsom Telegraph, Sacramento Bee, Good Day Sacramento, KFBK, Sacramento Magazine, and a mention in the Wall Street Journal. They have received numerous Elly Awards, an Arts Achievement Award from the Folsom Arts & Cultural Commission, a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, and many nominations. Sutter Street Theatre has recently announced its calendar for the 19th season, which contains shows for the Off-Broadway Series and Family Series as well as their monthly Storybook Time and Olde Tyme Radio Show. their hot off-the-smoker meats are the stars of the show, we were pleased to know that J.Wild’s menu also offers options for vegetarian, plantbased, and gluten-free meals. Plus, they have an impressive selection of over 60 whiskeys to choose from. Sammy and James Youmans are second-generation owners with a 20-year family presence on Sutter Street. Sammy is the daughter of Eric Schnetz, the founder of Chicago Fire Pizza. Paying homage to their deep community roots, Sammy and James decided to name the restaurant J.Wild’s in honor of the first commercial use of the building, dating back to 1902 when John Wild originally opened the location as a Livery and Feed store. There is a beautiful handpainted mural inside depicting the street as it looked back then. If you're looking for a tasty bite on Sutter Street, just follow your nose to J. Wild's.

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting 4 large eggs

what you do 1. Mound the flour in the center of a work surface with a well in the middle. Crack the eggs into the well and beat with a fork until smooth, then work flour into eggs with the fork. Use a bench scraper to work in the rest of the flour a little at a time. When the flour is incorporated, form the dough with your hands into a rounded mass for kneading. Lightly dust your workspace with flour and knead dough about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Cover dough with a bowl or plastic wrap and rest 1 1/2 hours, or chill overnight. 2. To roll by hand, flour a clean work surface. Vigorously roll dough to a very thin circle and roll constantly with even pressure as it stretches for several minutes until as thin as possible, almost translucent. 3. Dark Chocolate Truffles what you need 1/2 cup heavy cream 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1 cup cocoa powder, for dusting

what you do 1. Bring the cream to just a simmer in a saucepan over low heat. Pour the cream over the chocolate in a bowl and let stand about 10 minutes to melt the chocolate. Add the vanilla, stir until smooth and set aside to cool for 1 hour at room temperature. 2. Beat chocolate at medium speed until thick and light-colored. Spread over the bottom of a baking dish, smooth and refrigerate 2 hours until firm. 3. Pour cocoa powder onto a deep plate or shallow bowl, and using a melon baller or small ice cream scoop, scoop out balls of chocolate.
