The Elimination of Hurry this Year!
January 2025 PUBLISHER
Gavin Magee | gavin.magee@citylifestyle.com
Happy New Year, Fayetteville! January is here, and with it comes the chance to embrace fresh possibilities, new goals, and the energy of a brand-new year. In this issue, we’re highlighting local businesses and activities that help you feel your best. If fitness is your resolution, Fayetteville has great options! Rush Running Co. offers personalized shoe fittings for walkers, runners, and hikers, so every step feels lighter. If you’re curious about pickleball, now is the time to grab a paddle and check out the local courts, where there are classes and tournaments for every skill level. If you’re seeking a mindful, transformative workout, barre3’s high-intensity, low-impact classes are a wonderful way to build strength and connect with your community. Self-care is about nurturing yourself from the inside out, too. At Daily Beet, you’ll find delicious, nourishing dishes made with love—food that not only tastes great but makes you feel better. Pair that with a visit to Beem Red Light Sauna, where their cutting-edge red light therapy provides a relaxing way to recharge, helping you feel your best, inside and out. As winter sets in, it can be easy to feel a little isolated. Thankfully, Fayetteville has wonderful resources for maintaining your mental and emotional health. Whether it’s connecting with a local therapist, finding community groups, or simply taking time for rest and mindfulness, caring for your mind is just as important as taking care of your body. I also want to encourage you to add a fun resolution to your list this year. Life isn’t just about self-improvement; it’s about celebrating joy. Maybe try a new type of pasta every month or become an expert on something random, like the architecture of ant colonies or quirky roadside attractions across the country. For the past 15 years, I’ve made it a tradition to dive deeper into the music of a classic artist each year. Sometimes it’s someone I’ve never explored before, other times it’s a musician I love but only know through their biggest hits. This year, I think I’m going to get to know Solomon Burke’s music better. Whatever your goals are, I hope you approach them with kindness toward yourself. Resolutions don’t need to be about changing who you are—they can be about embracing what makes life beautiful, rich, and uniquely yours. Here’s to a year filled with possibility, adventure, and finding joy in unexpected places.

The Fayetteville Beem Team
We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of beem® Light Sauna in Fayetteville this month—just in time to kick off the new year with a fresh, innovative approach to wellness! As we head into 2025, this cutting-edge light therapy treatment is the perfect addition to your self-care routine. Whether you’re unwinding after a hectic day or looking to recharge, beem® offers a soothing, restorative experience that helps you feel revitalized, from the inside out. This exciting new venture is brought to you by Kristin and Tom Hayes, who are thrilled to share the life-changing benefits of beem® with their community. Tom, with over 20 years of experience in employee benefits consulting, had always dreamed of owning his own business. When he decided to step away from corporate America, that dream quickly shifted from an idea to an action plan. One night, Kristin was using a red light therapy wand, which sparked Tom’s curiosity. This soon led them to discover beem®, the leader in light therapy, and it was an immediate “YES!” from both of them. With a deep passion for health and wellness, they quickly fell in love with the innovation behind beem® and resonated with its core values: LIGHT—Love, Integrity, Gratitude, Health, and Tenacity. Their excitement grew even further when they visited the company’s headquarters Charlotte, NC and experienced beem® firsthand. Kristin was instantly hooked: “I love everything about this. My skin feels rejuvenated, and I leave with a glow.” And that glow didn’t go unnoticed. After sessions, Kristin even regularly receives compliments on her radiant skin, proving that what happens in the sauna doesn’t stay in the sauna. You truly carry your light with you. Now, Kristin and Tom are eager to help others experience this transformative wellness journey, empowering people to look and feel their best while embracing a healthier lifestyle. At beem®, members have two light therapy treatments: Red Light Therapy and the Infrared Sauna. Each treatment can be enjoyed independently or paired together for the ultimate rejuvenating experience. Before your first session, the staff of cheerful Wellness Associates and Sauna attendants, led by General Manager Sara Jayne Wilson, will work with you to create a personalized wellness plan, ensuring you get the most out of your time in the studio. Red Light Therapy involves a 15-minute session in a medical-grade red light suite, where the benefits are plentiful—from reducing wrinkles, fine lines, and acne, to offering relief for conditions like eczema, psoriasis, arthritis, and autoimmune disorders.

beem’s® The Infrared Sauna is equally unique. They use infrared light to provide a dry, comfortable heat (similar to the sun) that you feel rather than see. While relaxing, the sessions are customizable where members might read, take a call or watch a show while you detoxify. During a 40-minute session, you’ll experience a healthy sweat, burn 600 calories, and enjoy benefits like improved skin, boosted metabolism, reduced stress, pain relief, and toxin removal. The sauna also includes surround sound entertainment, complimentary mint-infused towels, and your choice of chromotherapy colors to set the perfect mood. Plus, if you want to share the experience with a friend, there’s even a social sauna with two seats available! After your session, treat yourself to a refreshing post-sauna shower, complete with complimentary beauty amenities. As you embark on your wellness journey, beem® offers the ultimate sanctuary for self-care—a tranquil space where you can unwind, recharge, and prioritize your health. Whether you’re seeking stress relief, rejuvenation, or simply a moment of pure relaxation, beem® is more than just a retreat; it’s a commitment to feeling your best. With benefits like stress reduction, detoxification, pain relief, and more, it’s not just a treat—it’s your opportunity to glow from the inside out! To kick off the new year and all the exciting goals ahead, beem® is launching a ‘New Year, Brighter You’ Wellness Crawl. Want to join in? Simply pick up your wellness passport at beem® and explore a variety of local wellness spots. For each place you visit, you’ll earn a stamp, and each stamp enters you into an incredible giveaway! Let’s glow together.

Maintaining Your Mental Wellness Fayetteville has several resources available to encourage a positive mental wellbeing during the winter months. Whether you like it or not, winter and its icy weather has arrived. Around town, you’ll see Fayettevillians wrapped up in oversized coats, scarves, gloves, and beanies. Winter can be a beautiful season – Northwest Arkansas in the snow is a grand sight to see. But hidden under the natural beauty can be a deep feeling of isolation. As you wait for the weather to warm back up, it’s vital to cultivate an environment that encourages positive mental wellness, and Fayetteville has several resources for this.
• A Balanced Diet: Fueling your body with healthy ingredients is necessary for tending to one’s mental health. Shopping for groceries at Ozark Natural Foods can both support local vendors and provide organic ingredients to be used in your next meal. • Staying Warm: Regardless of your choice of winter activity, dressing for the occasion is a necessity for both physical and mental health. Luckily, Fayetteville has a variety of local stores to consider when preparing for the outdoors. Local boutiques such as Darcy Apparel and RiffRaff offer upscale sweaters and coats. For the thrifters, local hot spots Recollect and Cheap Thrills offer curated selections of vintage clothes and accessories.
PHYSICAL HEALTH
EMOTIONAL HEALTH
• Caring For Your Body: Crunch Fitness of Fayetteville has every resource needed to encourage maintaining physical health. The gym offers a wide variety of exercise equipment and treadmills, but the fitness center also offers group workouts, stationary bicycles, and, if you’re struggling to warm up in winter weather, a sauna. If hardcore workouts aren’t your thing, Trailside Yoga provides a more serene form of exercise. Seeking comfort? Solace Day Spa offers several forms of care, including facials, massages, and skincare.

• Less Screen Time: It’s easy to bundle up in your bed and binge-watch a series or scroll through Instagram, but spending too much time in front of a screen can have a detrimental effect on mental health.
The Fayetteville Public Library
Replacing your screen time with more productive activities is a great way to start off the new year. Dickson Street Books offers a wide selection of used books to select your next read. Additionally, the Fayetteville Public Library has a wide selection of new books that are completely free. • Separate Work from Home: If you find yourself working from home this winter – whether full-time or temporarily – separating your work from your personal time can have a positive impact on your day. Try working from a different room in your house or relocating to a local coffee shop like Puritan Coffee & Beer or Old Pine Coffee Roasters for a warm beverage.
FINDING COMMUNITY
• Local Groups: Finding a community to call home has many mental benefits, and Fayetteville has a wide selection of local groups, including running groups sponsored by Rush Running Co., tabletop gaming clubs at Gear Gaming, or church community groups. • Online Community: Sometimes, the weather is just too treacherous to safely leave your home. Try using the technology around you to your advantage and bring the outside world to you! Start a virtual book club with friends and co-workers or attempt a workout routine with your friends over Facetime. The possibilities are endless. • Seek Support in a Crisis: If you or someone you know is experiencing a personal crisis or thinking about suicide, help is available. Call The Arkansas Crisis Center at 988 or 911 for immediate assistance. Winter doesn’t have to feel isolating. By embracing local resources and prioritizing physical, emotional, and social well-being, you can transform this season into an opportunity for growth and connection.

Rush Running Co. of Fayetteville, a local supplier of health-and-fitness gear and accessories, is a business difficult to ignore. Located on North College Avenue, the red-and-black building is stamped with its signature logo: Rush Running, with “Running’s” R creatively designed to resemble a running person, complemented by lines of air to signify movement. Those unfamiliar with the store might guess that it is a vendor for running supplies, but its impact on Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas runs much deeper. In fact, it was named the best running store in America in 2018 by Running Insight. Rush Running Co. was established in Bentonville in 2008 by Mike Rush and his wife, Alison. The duo had previously held placement on the roster for The University of Arkansas track and field team. After a stint working for a running store and for Adidas, Mike decided it was time to switch lanes. “I begged my wife to let me take all of the money we had, and then some, and open our running store,” said Mike Rush. They had such a successful launch that the Rush’s decided to expand to Fayetteville in 2011 so that their team could reach more people. Residents of Fayetteville no longer had to drive several miles to utilize the resources Rush Running Co. has to offer. Rush and his team of highly-trained employees can match runners of all skill levels with the perfect pair

of athletic shoes, whether it be for walking, running, or hiking. Using video gait analysis technology, the Rush Running Co. team studies interested customers as they walk or run, which helps categorize them into a certain type of shoe. The service is $30; however, the shoe analysis is free if a customer decides to purchase a pair of shoes from the store. “The least amount of factors of getting hurt is what we try to accomplish,” said Rush. “We try a shoe on until their foot smiles the biggest.” Rush is also known for his passion for local races. Each year, he runs a training group of 350 people for the Bentonville half-marathon. “I really like to meet people that come into the store and say, ‘I’m not a runner, but I want to run a race, and we do everything possible to help them get to the finish line,” said Rush. Additionally, Rush Running Co. sponsors around fifty charity races a year in northwest Arkansas. His team works to make sure races have everything they need, such as planning out trials, providing gifts for runners, or advertising on social media. A hidden gem inside of Bentonville’s location is Rush’s nationally recognized shoe museum, which showcases the changes in design and development of athletic shoes over the decades. Luckily for Fayetteville, the museum is expanding into the Fayetteville location later this year.
Mike Rush, Owner
Need a recommendation?: If you’re overwhelmed by the number of options when it comes to trails and roads around Fayetteville to choose for your next running spot, Mike Rush recommends the Lake Fayetteville Trail, the Markham Hills Nature Trails, and Agri Park. STAYING WARM
The start of the new year is all about making resolutions. If you are interested in picking up running, Rush recommends that you keep in mind the freezing weather of late winter and early spring. While there are local gyms with indoor running tracks or treadmills, Rush feels that getting accustomed to running outdoors is much more fun and scenic. Rush Running Co. has all the supplies necessary to keep warm as you start taking running seriously. Rush recommends covering your chest, using gloves, and wearing a good hat when running through cold Arkansas wind. “The more comfortable you are, in whatever weather you’re in, the more inspired you will be to get outside and run,” said Rush. “Plus, it’s pretty to run after a good snow”
26
O FF R OA D | FI TNESS
No matter your body temperature or your level of comfort, running can be a difficult hobby to master at first, but Rush insists those who are serious about it should keep fighting. “If you have both consistency and patience, you will get whatever you want,” said Rush. “Getting fit in running doesn’t happen overnight. You have to be consistent and patient, and then you will reap the rewards.” There is also warmth in numbers. Northwest Arkansas is overflowing with residents that love to run, so much so that there are several Run Clubs active throughout the area. Completely free and open to all skill levels, running clubs are a fantastic way to find community, stay motivated, and bundle up when it gets too chilly. If you’re still hesitant to start running in 2025, Rush simply suggests you think about your health: “Don’t you want to live longer?”

What if your food not only tasted amazing but also made you feel better, inside and out? That’s the philosophy behind Daily Beet. Lucky for us, Dylan Maisel has brought this delicious hub of health from New Orleans to Fayetteville, where you can now find some of the tastiest and most nourishing food in the city. “Our passion for creating wholesome dishes is driven by the belief that when you eat well, you feel well, and when you feel well you are able to be present for those simple, yet special daily moments.” Dylan and his family, who love Fayetteville’s keep-it-local spirit, enjoy exploring the outdoors, visiting the farmer’s market, and appreciating the charm of the city’s neighborhoods. This local focus extends to Daily Beet’s menu, which is a feast for both the eyes and the body. In a world where so much of the American diet is beige or brown, Daily Beet’s dishes stand out—bursting with color and packed with nutrients. Research shows that eating a rainbow of colorful foods can do wonders for your health, with each color offering unique benefits. For example, vibrant blue and purple foods are known to boost brain function and support healthy aging. Daily Beet is committed to health from the inside out, partnering with local farmers and bakers to encourage the simple yet powerful idea: pay your farmer, not your doctor. Two common misconceptions about healthy eating are that you need to be 100% committed to a clean diet to step into a health-conscious restaurant, and that vegan food

simply doesn’t pack enough protein. At Daily Beet, those myths are quickly debunked. This vibrant spot welcomes everyone with protein-packed dishes designed to fuel both body and soul. “I want to offer flavors that people are comfortable with,” says owner Dylan, emphasizing their belief that healthy eating should be accessible, delicious, and joyful. They aim to empower people to prioritize their health without feeling overwhelmed or excluded—no matter where they’re starting on their wellness journey. As a first-time visitor, be sure to try these four standout dishes: 1. Banana Oatmeal Pancakes: Light, fluffy, and naturally sweetened with ripe bananas, these pancakes are made with organic oats and topped with protein-packed cashew crema. You won’t believe it’s good for you.

2. Orbit Bowl: Their #1 bestseller and for good reason! This vibrant bowl is their twist on the classic Korean Bibimbap, featuring a perfectly cooked local pastured egg, hearty wild rice, and their homemade vegan kimchi—packed with probiotics to support a healthy gut. 3. Cosmic Blue Smoothie: A vibrant blend of blue majik spirulina, pineapple, banana, almond butter, coconut, hemp hearts, vanilla, and agave. This creamy, tropical smoothie is packed with antioxidants and healthy fats, delivering a refreshing, energizing boost in every sip! 4. Acai bowl: A refreshing, tropical bowl of goodness! sweet coconut flakes, and a drizzle of honey. It’s the perfect balance of sweetness, texture, and nutrition in every bite. In a world of fast food and fad diets, Daily Beet offers a refreshing reminder to listen to our bodies and eat with intention. As founder Dylan Maisel puts it, “in my ideal world, a customer can come into a welcoming and beautiful space, enjoy a meal loaded with nutrients, and leave feeling better—both physically and mentally.” At Daily Beet, the focus is on simple, nourishing food that empowers you to prioritize your health and well-being, one delicious meal at a time. After all, as Michael Pollan wisely says, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” Here, eating well isn’t just a choice—it’s a celebration of life’s vibrancy.

Jill Goodwin, Fayetteville Junior Civic Leagues Pickleball Chair
Within the last decade, a new sport has taken over the town. Pickleball, similar to tennis and ping-pong but with volleyball scoring, is quickly becoming a major pastime. Nationwide, people are finding that whether you live in a big city or a small suburb, there is a court to play on – and lucky for us, Fayetteville has many. The most important aspect of this up-and-coming sport is its inclusivity—it’s welcoming to all ages and demographics. The rules are simple, and the game is easy to pick up, making it an accessible way to stay active. Played primarily as doubles, the goal is to hit the ball over the short net onto the opponent’s side of the court. While fast-paced, it’s easy to keep up with and provides a solid workout. Older adults particularly appreciate pickleball for its low intensity and nonaggressive nature. Whether you’re playing as a casual hobby or as a competitive outlet, the sport’s popularity continues to grow.
WHERE TO PLAY IN NORTHWEST ARKANSAS
Northwest Arkansas is home to several pickleball courts that hold tournaments and classes for both beginners and experts. If you’re new to the sport, Fayetteville Athletic Club (FAC) hosts how-to clinics with pickleball-specific coaches to help you get started. FAC also offers open play sessions on Saturday mornings for all skill levels. One standout feature of this location is its indoor court, insulated in a bubble for the winter season. Beyond pickleball, FAC provides opportunities to run in their gym, take workout classes, or swim laps in their pool. CONTINUED >

The outdoor community also embraces pickleball, with courts available at parks across town. Some popular locations include Wilson Park, the University of Arkansas courts on MLK Boulevard, Walker Park, Farmington, and the Matrix in Lowell, AR. For those seeking membership-based options, Fayetteville Athletic Club memberships start at $99, while Matrix memberships start at $199. For a more social pickleball experience, PB&JJ’s at JJ’s Live North Steele Boulevard is a great option. With food trucks, areas for large groups to hang out, and plenty of space to cool off, it’s a hub for both recreation and connection.
FROM HOBBY TO COMPETITION
Once you’ve learned to play, pickleball tournaments are gaining traction in Northwest Arkansas. Grab a partner and sign up for a competition at the Matrix, where fun and sport come together. Wilson Park also offers 10-week camps for $135, organized by skill level to provide helpful instruction.
— Jill Goodwin
The Fayetteville Junior Civic League (JCL) has embraced pickleball as a way to bring people together and give back to the community. This good-hearted group is dedicated to improving the quality of life for families in need through grants and volunteering.

PICKLEBALL AND COMMUNITY

JCL’s initiatives include fundraisers like The Pickleball Classic, Trivia Night, and Big Party, which have collectively raised nearly $1 million to support Northwest Arkansas. Marta Hobbs, JCL president, and Jill Goodwin, the organization’s pickleball chair, also team up on the court as doubles partners. For Jill, “getting to compete either for fun or in tournaments locally” is one of her favorite parts of playing in Fayetteville.
Pickleball’s rise has also led to a demand for merchandise and gear. Locally you can visit Academy Sports in Fayetteville or any Walmart Supercenter, and look for brands like Joola, Selkirk, Paddletek, and Vulcan who offer custom paddles, bags, and rackets tailored specifically for the sport. With the smaller paddle size, players can choose designs and patterns that reflect their personal style, adding flair to their game.
NEW YEAR, NEW HOBBY
As pickleball gains momentum, there’s a growing potential for it to rival tennis in popularity. So, grab a paddle, find a partner, and head to a local court to embark on your pickleball adventure. Whether you’re there for fun or competition, it’s a great way to stay active and connect with the community!

The workouts target all major muscle groups with isometric holds, small pulses, and functional movements that engage the whole body in ways that mirror real-life activities. Morgan Riddles
Morgan Riddles, the owner, shares how barre3 has been a constant source of strength throughout various seasons of her life—whether recovering from cancer, navigating pregnancies and postpartum, or managing rheumatoid arthritis and other health challenges. “No matter the challenge, barre3 has always been there for me, adapting alongside my journey and reminding me that movement is a gift—one that’s as unique and resilient as the body that carries it,” she says. Whether she’s instructing or taking a class, she always leaves feeling energized and refreshed. Rooted in inclusivity, the focus is on fitness that feels good, not just looks good. Rather than chasing an aesthetic or a number on the scale, barre3 makes you feel stronger, calmer, and more connected to your body. This principle is reflected in the environment, where instructors are not just coaches but also cheerleaders, celebrating small victories and helping clients stay focused on their goals. Newcomers can expect a thorough introduction to the class structure, available modifications, and cues to ensure comfortability. The supportive atmosphere encourages moving at your own pace, with no pressure to “keep up,” and focuses on honoring your body. A standout feature of barre3 is its community. Longtime member Chandler Cartwright shares, “I’ve tried many other studios, and nothing compares to what barre3 offers. The combination of community and wellness creates an experience where working out truly feels good.” The group atmosphere fosters a shared sense of purpose, where everyone’s presence uplifts others. Many clients find that this collective energy helps them push through challenges, stay consistent, and hold themselves accountable. It’s also a great way to connect with like-minded individuals, making it easier to stick to a fitness routine. If you’re looking for a new fitness routine, barre3 is here to meet you exactly where you are. There’s no need to strive for perfection. Every person in the studio is on their own unique journey, and the welcoming community ensures you’ll always feel supported. Choose to show up for yourself in 2025 and embrace lasting habits that extend far beyond the New Year, fostering balance, strength, and empowerment in every season of your life.
