The Season to Give and Be Filled

Dear Fayetteville,

This time of year, I have found myself thinking about the motto: “Givers Gain.” It’s more than a motto from a networking group I am a part of - it’s a reminder that when we choose to give of ourselves consistently, we end up receiving something far deeper in return.

Giving doesn’t always mean gifts or grand gestures. Sometimes it looks like making a connection, sharing a meal, being a listening ear, or simply showing up. Even if the return isn’t immediate, those choices plant something deep within us that lingers in meaningful ways. Joy. Purpose. Contentment. During the Holidays and Christmas, the remembrance of Jesus Christ’s gift to humanity is the true example of generosity, a gift from our Creator that never stops giving. When I hold that truth close, it becomes much easier to give freely in my daily life, knowing I’ve already received something far greater than anything I could offer. In a season that can feel rushed or transactional, giving intentionally, generously, and with love will inevitably fill our own spirit, with everyone gaining.

In this Holidays and Giving Issue, we’re spotlighting stories that reflect that spirit right here in Northwest Arkansas. We start with KenzKustomz, a locally owned gift shop and creator filled with personality, heart, and hand-picked finds perfect for the people you love. Then, in Season of Giving, we highlight five nonprofits doing meaningful, boots-on-the-ground work in our region and how you can get involved.

For those looking to make the most of the season, Holidate in Fayetteville offers ideas for festive outings and cozy date nights around town. From Tracks to Trails tells the story of an iconic landmark being relocated and reimagined as a new chapter begins. And finally, Living with T1D gives a powerful and personal look at how Type 1 Diabetes impacts individuals and families in our community, not just during the holidays, but year-round.

Fayetteville, thank you for being a city that gives well. May your December be filled with light, laughter, and love—and may you discover the true joy of this season.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays,

December 2025

STITCHED WITH Local LOVE

When the chill settles over the Ozarks and the town square glows with Christmas lights, Fayetteville turns into a small-town holiday dream. But located right in town and online for shoppers around the world, there’s one shop adding its own sparkle to the season.

KenzKustomz is a vibrant, locally owned shop that’s redefining what it means to give a personalized gift. What began as a small business launched from Kendall Beykirch’s condo at just 21 years old has now grown into a national name.

Originally based in Florida, Kendall set out to create a business centered on gifts and monogramming. During COVID, when online shopping surged, the brand first gained recognition for its custom patches on bags and accessories. After one influencer posted with a KenzKustomz item, it went viral overnight, selling out the website just 4 months in.

After several years away, Kendall returned to her alma mater, Fayetteville, ready to continue her success story. Now, as the year draws to a close, KenzKustomz is holiday-ready with shelves full of gifts, travel bags, and stylish accessories.

Kendall Beykirch, Owner
“THIS journey, ALTHOUGH challenging , IS SO rewarding BECAUSE OF EVERY website ,
Kendall Beykirch, Owner

Featured in major retailers such as Scheels, Buckle, Altr’d State, Anthropologie, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, the brand has made its mark in the retail and gift industry. It has also been featured on E! News, Good Morning America, and People throughout the years.

As the holiday season approaches, so does the challenge of finding thoughtful gifts for everyone on your list. From embroidered travel bags to fun hats and totes, KenzKustomz’s offerings stand out from typical big-box fare. Shopping here means supporting a local Arkansas business—adding a feel-good element to every purchase.

Some of the most popular items include hats with designs and sayings that fit every personality. Travel bags remain a best-seller year-round, along with cozy sweatshirts and pajamas. KenzKustomz takes pride in its themed collections and in bringing modern trends to the fashion and gift industries. A few of their standout collections include a Western line featuring influencer Hallie Ray Light McCollum, a game-day collection, and their latest holiday collection.

Custom wholesale orders are also one of the company’s strengths—perfect for retailers interested in carrying KenzKustomz products, or for those planning bachelorette trips, weddings, and other special events.

Kendall also recommends subscribing to the “Hat of the Month” club. Your first month is only $5, and you’ll receive a brand-new trucker hat right on your doorstep at the start of the month. Membership also includes early access to sales and the VIP chat—perfect for hat lovers or anyone who enjoys a fun surprise.

“BEING A great PLACE FOR gifting IS WHAT WE LIKE TO hit ON HERE AT KenzKustomz .”

The hardworking team also offers beautifully prepackaged gift boxes, ready to ship. Each box is thoughtfully curated with items wrapped to perfection. Their Christmas gift bundles are a customer favorite—ideal for placing under the tree for a loved one or friend. In November, the company launched a holiday pajama line for adults and babies—just in time for family photos or cozy Christmas Eve traditions. Be on the lookout for their upcoming Country Christmas collection, featuring another well-known influencer and fan of the shop.

Behind the scenes, a close-knit team works with heart and hustle to keep KenzKustomz thriving. From Kendall’s very first intern—now a full-time team member—to her mother, who oversees customer service, the group may be small, but they’re mighty. In the warehouse, it’s all hands on deck as online orders fly out the door.

KenzKustomz brings fresh style and function to everyday organization with its custom line of gifts and accessories designed for real life. And this holiday season, there’s no need to stress over gifting as KenzKustomz’s servant-hearted team has something special for everyone on your list.

T H E SEASONOFGIVING

The end of the year is finally here and while the spirit of philanthropy might be more evident during the holiday season, there are several Northwest Arkansas-based organizations who work to give back year-round. We’ve provided a short list of these organizations – learn more about their mission and how to get involved!

PUTTING A SPOTLIGHT ON SOME OF THE ORGANIZATIONS IN FAYETTEVILLE DEDICATED TO GIVING BACK

ARTICLE BY WILL NEWTON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA PRUITT

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas

For those unfamiliar with the nationwide program, Big Brothers Big Sisters is a free mentorship program dedicated to pairing children with older mentors. These services are provided in a variety of ways, such as bringing mentors to schools, the BBBS office or by spending time together throughout the community. The Northwest Arkansas chapter of the organization has been based in Fayetteville for 30 years, serving both Benton County and Washington County. At the start of the organization’s three decades of mentor-matching was its very first match in Fayetteville.

“We have some strong ties to Fayetteville, both with our first matches and we have a wonderful program with the Fayetteville school systems. We probably serve five different elementary schools, and it’s a really great way for Fayetteville kids to get to know each other and for the high schoolers to go back to the elementary schools they grew up in,” said Madeline Doran, director of marketing and strategy..

Although active throughout the year, the holiday season is a special time for the BBBS program. The organization hosts a celebration for its matches and their families, which Doran defines as a “great time to bring everyone together and really get into the holiday spirit.”

The organization is regularly looking for support to continue its mission. Whether it be through contributing to fundraisers or by volunteering to be a mentor, volunteering with BBBS of Northwest Arkansas is a great way to give back to our community.

Northwest Arkansas Harm Reduction

Northwest Arkansas Harm Reduction works to provide individuals dealing with addiction and substance use free resources (such as Narcan) and educational materials necessary to remain safe on the road to recovery – no questions asked. The organization was founded in 2022 by Brittany Kelly after witnessing her brother wrestling with addiction struggles.

“We didn’t really know anything about harm reduction, and it wasn’t until I learned more and educated myself that I really dove into it and saw the benefits of it,” Kelly said.

Alongside its focus on aiding individuals in active addiction and substance use, one of the goals with the nonprofit was to remove any negative stigma around the topics by providing educational materials to the community, including safe practices and vocabulary terms.

“That kind of outreach gives people a chance to feel like they’re a part of the community and making a difference and feel accepted,” Kelly said.

Kelly and the Northwest Arkansas Harm Reduction team are completely volunteer-based, so, instead of having a headquarters, the organization is mobile. Community members interested in the organization’s rehabilitation services, whether it be requesting supplies or educational materials, can reach out via a text hotline or their website to learn more.

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is a nonprofit on a mission to provide sanctuary for animals all over the world that have been victims of the exotic pet trade. The organization has saved over 500 animals in its 30 years of operation, including lions, tigers, leopards and cougars. Once saved, the refuge provides a home for the animals until the end of their life, as they can no longer be safely returned back into the wild.

“Every rescue tells a story of compassion and commitment,” said Cheryl King, Marketing Director for the nonprofit. “Our recent rescue from Canada is a perfect example of how far we’re willing to go to give these animals the care and safety they deserve.”

Currently, the nonprofit is hosting around 120 animals on 459 acres of land. Members of the public are able to visit the saved animals through various means, including open-air tram tours and lodging options.

“We are the animals’ voices, telling their stories and where they come from, why they’re here and why they can never be released back into the wild as captive animals,” King said.

Although community members cannot work directly with the animals due to safety concerns, Fayetteville community members can provide support in several other ways. The organization provides a sponsorship program for its animals and accepts donations year-round.

CASA of Northwest Arkansas

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to recruiting, training and supervising volunteers to advocate for children who are experiencing foster care. The nonprofit has been based in Fayetteville for over 25 years and has successfully served every child in need of their services.

“Our primary focus is being able to recruit enough volunteers to be consistently meeting children’s needs,” said Ryan Clements, Volunteer Services Manager.

Alongside CASA’s core mission, the nonprofit offers the CASA Closet, a year-round program that provides gifts and clothing for families that may not be able to afford them – judgment-free.

“We’re giving them to caregivers and saying, ‘put these under your tree, say they’re from you or from Santa…however it makes Christmas the most magical,” Clements said.

In addition to financial donations, the CASA team is always looking for volunteers, especially males and bilingual individuals. Volunteers go through a five-week training process before they are eligible to handle their first case.

“(At the time of this interview), we have almost 30 kids in Washington County who are waiting for an advocate.”

Walton Arts Center

Walton Arts Center is a nonprofit based in Fayetteville on a mission to bring great performing artists to Northwest Arkansas in order to connect and engage all people through inspiring arts experiences. Although the organization might be primarily recognized for its schedule of live theater, comedy and music throughout the year, Walton Arts Center also is responsible for a variety of community-focused programs.

“We want to help people build empathy and a sense of community by seeing themselves and their neighbors represented on stage, and to make the arts something everyone can access and enjoy,” said Sallie Zazal, Director of Learning and Engagement.

Walton Arts Center’s programs include Take a Seat, which gives free tickets to nonprofit partners for their clients, 10x10 Arts Series, which provides $10 tickets for each of the ten shows in the series, the Classroom Series, which brings teacher and students to performances for free, and the newly-introduced Hip-Hop 101, a free afterschool program that teaches students the basics of the hip-hop genre, among others.

Take a Seat is a year-round program that provides free tickets for clients of partner nonprofits, and can have a big impact, especially on those who are struggling during the holidays.

“Getting to come to a show for free, especially around the holidays, can lift your spirits and provide a fun and immersive activity for families who might not otherwise be able to attend,” said Rachel Pianalto Strickland, Director of Individual Giving.

Community members interested in supporting the nonprofit’s mission can make a tax-deductible donation, join the Friends annual-giving program or volunteer for one of several positions needed to support performances.

Preserving Fayetteville’s Iconic Train Cars

From Tracks to Trails

ARTICLE BY SYDNEY SULLIVAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREA PRUITT

For nearly 30 years, a red caboose and a green passenger train car have been more than just a quirky branch of the Bank of Fayetteville. They’ve been a downtown landmark, a conversation starter, and a small but mighty piece of Fayetteville history. Tucked at the corner of Dickson Street and West Avenue, these train cars were reportedly the only bank branch in the world housed inside a train. Now, with downtown development on the horizon, the cars have moved just a short distance away, ensuring they remain a vibrant part of the city’s landscape.

Fayetteville’s railroad story is full of adventure, growth, and a touch of drama. For years, the railroad served as the XNA of Fayetteville, the hub for all coming and going in Northwest Arkansas. The first passenger train rolled into town on July 4, 1882, connecting the Ozark region to the wider world and transforming life for a once-isolated community. Over the years, three depots served the city: a wooden station lost to fire in 1897, a sturdy brick-and-stone replacement, and the current 1925 Spanish-style depot, which once buzzed with six trains a day and now houses a Chipotle restaurant. Nearby, the Freight House—once home to Arsaga’s at the Depot—remains a tangible link to the city’s railroading past, reminding locals that downtown Fayetteville has always been a place of movement, commerce, and creativity.

“These train cars will remain in downtown Fayetteville as a lasting part of our community’s culture and history.”

-Ted Belden & Greg House

The Bank of Fayetteville’s train cars became part of that legacy when John Lewis, the bank’s president, transformed them into a branch that captured the imagination of the community. Now, as a Hilton-brand hotel prepares to rise on the original site, developers Greg House and Ted Belden have stepped in to preserve the cars. They’ll be relocated to a spot adjacent to the Razorback Greenway and the Freight House, just 100 yards away. “They’re going to stay in downtown Fayetteville and be part of our culture and history moving forward,” Belden and House said, noting that the

considerable expense of moving the cars is a small price to pay to preserve a community treasure.

Looking ahead, the future for the train cars is designed to honor both history and the city’s playful spirit. Plans call for vintage-style lounge spaces inspired by the elegance of the Orient Express. The passenger car could become a cozy coffee shop, the caboose a whimsical ice cream spot, and the Freight House could host a bar, bakery, and retail shops. Together, the spaces promise to become a “distinctive and memorable destination” for locals and visitors alike.

“From

the first trains that opened the Ozarks to the evolution of downtown spaces like the Freight House, these historic pieces remind residents that growth and tradition can coexist”

Preserving the train cars isn’t just about nostalgia—it’s about keeping a tangible connection to Fayetteville’s story. From the first trains that opened the Ozarks to the evolution of downtown spaces like

the Freight House, these historic pieces remind residents that growth and tradition can coexist. With the cars moving to their new home along the Greenway, Fayetteville is poised to celebrate its past while creating a lively, engaging space for the present and future. As the cars prepare for their journey, the developers are inviting the community to share ideas for their new life. It’s a chance for locals to help shape a piece of history, proving that when a city treasures its past, it can create something truly magical for everyone.

Type 1 Diabetes [T1D] is a dynamic and often misunderstood condition. While many are familiar with Type 2 Diabetes – typically associated with lifestyle choices – T1D is an autoimmune disease, commonly linked to genetic markers and environmental triggers. Individuals living with T1D are unable to produce insulin on their own and rely on injections or a pump to manage blood sugar. For some, including the ambassadors in this article, the diagnosis experience can be sudden and scary; something Breakthrough T1D is working to rectify through early detection and increased awareness, in addition to its primary mission to find a cure for those living with Type 1 Diabetes.

According to Breakthrough T1D, common symptoms include: Frequent urination, extreme thirst, fruity odor on the breath, increased appetite, fatigue, sudden vision changes, and unexplained weight loss.

Now, when I’m low [glucose], some things taste really sour.” For Sutton, one of the most difficult things about living with T1D is explaining her devices. She wears her continuous glucose monitor [CGM] and a watch, which sends her and her caregivers alerts when needed. “People are always concerned about me,” she says. “When little kids ask me about it [CGM], I say it’s a special bandaid, but when older kids ask me, I’ll actually explain it.”

Jackson is ahead of the game in T1D advocacy. The high school freshman recently represented Arkansas at Children’s Congress in Washington, D.C. “I wrote a one-page essay about my experiences, and they selected 170 kids to go and speak to Congress.” While in D.C., he had the opportunity to meet with representatives to talk about T1D and funding for the Special Diabetes Program. “It’s cool to see our highest officials are still looking to the people for insight,” he said. Jackson was in fifth grade when he received his T1D diagnosis, and remembers a classmate’s experience being a huge help when navigating the change. “He had been diagnosed the year before. We were good friends, so I knew what it was like for him, and we could talk to each other about it.”

ROXANA HUTCHCROFT SANDY RAINEY

Unlike the others in this article, Roxana was diagnosed with T1D as an adult. “I hadn’t been feeling well for a while, and I remember being really thirsty all the time,” she said. “I was later diagnosed with endocarditis, which is likely what led to the diabetic ketoacidosis [DKA].” When Roxanna was unresponsive to messages from friends who knew she was ill, they contacted police to conduct a welfare check, which likely saved her life. Today, she helps others like her as a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist at the Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Springdale. Roxana also serves on the Board of Directors for Breakthrough T1D - Arkansas.

Diagnosed at eight years old, Sandy grew up without the modern tools benefiting those with T1D today. She recalls her mom being her greatest asset. “My mom was pretty aware and kept on it. She boiled syringes, tested my pee, and regulated what I ate, drank, my exercise, and my insulin.” When she was young, doctors said she wouldn’t have kids, but Sandy ended up having three sons, including twins. “When my sugar was low, my kids would say, ‘She’s going banana sandwich!’” Now, with her CGM and a pump, she feels more freedom with her T1D management, but still does what she can to spread awareness.
