LIFESTYLE LETTER
Join the Club I have a confession: I am not a fan of working out. I never have been. I’ve spent more money than I care to admit on gym memberships that I used once… maybe twice. The smell? Ick. The crowds? Ick. The sweaty equipment? Double ick. I know many people thrive in that environment — good for them! — but it has never been the place that motivates me. For years, I secretly wished I could have a personal trainer who would come to my home. Someone who would guide me, teach me proper form, and hold me accountable. But I always assumed it just wasn’t realistic — too expensive, too inconvenient, too… everything. And then, a little serendipity. I got a call from the owner of a new personal training company — our cover feature this month — offering something I didn’t even realize existed: a fully mobile training experience. They come to me. To my home. With all the equipment. All the knowledge. All the encouragement. And suddenly, something that once felt impossible felt surprisingly attainable. So there I was, in my kitchen (the only space big enough for me to flail around gracefully), learning how to move my body the right way — safely, effectively, confidently. And here’s the wild part... I’m actually gaining muscle, not pounds. I’m gaining confidence, not excuses. I’m discovering that exercise can be real, sustainable, and — gulp — even a little fun! Most importantly, I’m doing something healthy for myself. Not because I should or because someone told me to. But because taking care of myself at home, in a way that feels natural and doable, has become a small act of self-respect. As we step into this Health & Wellness issue, I hope you’ll find something in these pages that nudges you toward doing one good thing for yourself, too. Big or small, it counts. And if your kitchen becomes your new gym — well, welcome to the club. Abundant blessings,

AVOCADO TOAST WITH GREENS AND POACHED EGGS – A HEALTHY WAY TO START THE DAY!
GREEN, GOOD, & GORGEOUS ARTICLE BY PAULI REEP
A wholesome avocado toast piled high with vibrant greens and topped with a perfectly poached egg. Creamy avocado blends with crisp greens for fresh flavor and satisfying texture, while the warm, runny yolk adds richness. Served on hearty whole-grain or sourdough bread, it’s a nourishing, energizing meal that feels both simple and indulgent. A crave-worthy favorite that delights with every bite and leaves you feeling wonderfully satisfied.
HEARTY AVOCADO TOAST WITH GREENS & POACHED EGG Servings: 2
Ingredients
2. Crack the eggs Carefully crack each egg into its own small ramekin or bowl.
5. Prep the avocado Smash the avocado and season with salt and pepper. 6. Finish the eggs Use a slotted spoon to remove the poached eggs and briefly drain them on a paper towel. If they’re softer than you prefer, slip them back into the hot water for another minute or two.
Directions
3. Poach the eggs Turn off the heat. Working one at a time, tip the edge of each ramekin into the hot water, allowing a little water to swirl in and begin setting the egg. Gently release the egg into the pan.Cover with the lid and do not lift it. Poach 3–4 minutes for runny 4–5 minutes for medium

1. Heat the poaching water Fill a medium nonstick, wide saucepan with 2½–3 inches of water and add the vinegar. Cover and bring to a full boil.
4. Toast the bread While the eggs poach, toast your bread of choice.

SHARING Jarod
HOW LORI NEIDLINGER BREAKS THE MENTAL HEALTH SILENCE FOR MANY. ARTICLE BY PAM REID | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
20
I NSP IR E D BY | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
In a world where social media shines its bright light on perfection - smiling families, curated vacations, homes where laughter fills the halls - too many people quietly carry unseen pain. The Neidlinger family lived that hidden reality for years. Their story, known to many through news reports and community conversations, has become a lifeline for others who thought they were alone. Rob and Lori Neidlinger will celebrate 30 years of marriage this December. They built a life filled with love, faith, and the dreams most parents share. Their sons, Noah and Jarod, were born just a year apart, and in 2006, Rob’s work brought the family to Peachtree City. The boys were five and six. Then, slowly, the silence began. By age 10, their son Jarod’s sensitivity to sound grew so severe that family life began to change. Diagnosed with misophonia - a neurological condition where everyday sounds such as chewing or breathing trigger extreme emotional or physical reactions - Jarod could no longer tolerate the simplest of family moments. The word misophonia literally means hatred of sound. “The dinner table disappeared,” Lori recalls. “So many normal things disappeared.” Searching for relief from misophonia in his late teens, Jarod began experimenting with different coping methods. One of those choices would later be linked to a serious complication that intensified and prolonged episodes of delusion. That was the beginning of the second diagnosis: Schizophrenia — a complex mental illness marked by psychosis, disorganized thinking, changes in behavior, and altered emotional responses. While schizophrenia is not linked to misophonia and is often manageable with consistent treatment, the path to help is rarely simple. Lori and Rob are true opposites. “I’m the emotional one; Rob is steady and level-headed. He finds the positive when I can’t see it. That balance helped us survive.”

Jarod often heard voices and would retreat to a wooded area near the family’s home to “talk to them.” There, he felt safest. Lori barely slept. “I was always worried he might hurt himself. Always checking on him. It never left my mind.” When Jarod turned 18, the family encountered another shock: despite being his parents, they could no longer make medical decisions or even receive updates about his care. “We learned the hard way that once your child turns 18, even if they’re mentally ill, you must have legal guardianship to speak to doctors or make decisions,” Lori explains. “Without it, they wouldn’t even tell us what hospital he was in.” At 22, something beautiful happened. Jarod stood as a groomsman at Noah’s wedding. He couldn’t stay for the reception, as it would be too overstimulating, but after the ceremony, he approached his brother and said words Lori and Noah will never forget: “Noah, I want you to know how happy I am for you and Brittany, and how much I love you.” That moment remains one of the family’s treasures. It was just a year later that life took another heartbreaking turn. After resisting medication,
disappearing for days, even weeks at a time, and enduring rounds of hospital care, Jarod vanished again. This time, he didn’t come back. In that familiar stretch of woods where he once sought calm, his story reached its quiet conclusion. And somehow - even there - love remains. “That place has become my peaceful place that I can go to and talk to Jarod all I want,” Lori says. “I sit on the bench our neighbors placed and painted for me, and talk to Jarod. I’ve seen a buck feed, a muskrat build its home, and a blue heron land in the water.” It’s as if creation is reminding Lori that beauty still lives in that place. They call it Jarod’s Place. The neighbors planted a swamp azalea, and continue to pull the weeds to keep the space clear. “Because of Jarod’s story,” Lori says, “people have started opening up. They’re talking about their children, their fears, their exhaustion. They’re realizing they’re not alone.” In a community often defined by its picture-perfect façade, Jarod’s story stripped away the filter and replaced it with something deeper - connection. The Neidlingers’ courage to share their truth has created a ripple of compassion through Fayette County and beyond.
“Because of Jarod’s story, people have started opening up. They’re talking about their children, their fears, their exhaustion.” — Lori Neidlinger

RETHINKING THE WAY WE MOVE
Personal trainers are not a new concept, but GYMGUYZ took the familiar model and transformed it into something personal and accessible. By embracing a mobile format, the team shifted fitness from being a place you go to something that comes directly to you. Whether it’s easier for you to exercise at home, at work, or somewhere unexpected, GYMGUYZ trainers meet clients exactly where they are in their physical location and current stage of wellness. GYMGUYZ operates as a methodical, intentional, and highly personalized approach to wellness, one designed to remove the most common barriers preventing people from taking control of their health. That intentionality, along with the commitment to making a positive impact on the community, is what drew Erin and Joel Castro to bring GYMGUYZ to Fayette County in March 2025.

GYMGUYZ OFFERS CUSTOMIZED, MOBILE TRAINING DESIGNED FOR REAL LIFE, REAL SCHEDULES, AND REAL CHANGE.
Before opening GYMGUYZ, the couple was looking for a venture that aligned with their personal values while allowing for a practical division of strengths. Joel studied exercise physiology in college and worked as a personal trainer during those years before becoming a certified strength and conditioning specialist. Erin recognized that his technical expertise paired naturally with her business mindset. Together, they saw the opportunity to create something meaningful. “It just felt like a good fit,” Joel shared, noting that the GYMGUYZ model also gave him the flexibility he wanted both professionally and as a parent. With Erin taking charge of operations and Joel overseeing training and client services, the business became a family effort that the couple hoped would offer their children hands-on experience and an early understanding of entrepreneurship. And with that, GYMGUYZ Southwest Atlanta was born. The GYMGUYZ team is composed of eight to twelve trainers at any given time. Each trainer brings a wide base of knowledge to the table, along with unique specialties that allow for a deeply customized approach to client care. Altogether, the team serves
between 25 and 30 clients, though this number shifts depending on the time of year, the types of training packages clients choose, and community demand. What differentiates GYMGUYZ is their mission to serve individuals who may feel overlooked or intimidated by traditional gym environments. As Joel explained, “We fill a void. We fill a gap where you have a certain subset of the population who doesn’t like to go to the gym or is embarrassed or has anxiety or doesn’t know what to do.” This gap extends across demographics. Stay-at-home parents benefit from training sessions that allow them to remain close to their children. Busy professionals appreciate the convenience of fitting a workout into their schedules without commuting. Teenage boys who might otherwise retreat to video games can become motivated when a trainer arrives at the door with customized plans and hands-on encouragement. Because each trainer has specialties, the GYMGUYZ team can pair clients with the right person, whether they need strength training, mobility support, functional fitness, weight loss guidance, or post-injury help. The arrival of a new year brings the arrival of new resolutions, many centered around fitness or personal betterment. Technology offers endless self-guided resources, from YouTube workouts and fitness apps to AI-generated plans, but even the best digital tool cannot replicate the accountability that comes from someone physically showing up for you. “You can figure out what to do on your own,” Joel said. “But there’s nothing like personal trainers showing up at your door. They’re gonna hold you accountable.” That accountability often makes the difference between someone giving up after a few days and someone building a sustainable routine. Another obstacle people face is confusion. Broad, generalized online routines may offer a starting point, but they rarely address the complexity of an individual’s body, injuries, preferences, or long-term goals. This is where the personal in personal training CONTINUED >

becomes crucial. “Personal training is personal,” Joel emphasized. “We work really hard to get to know the person, what they like and what they don’t like… We figure out what you’re going to be able to stay consistent with long-term.” And consistency is the cornerstone of meaningful change. For GYMGUYZ, it isn’t just about helping clients reach a goal. “We are after long-term, sustained lifestyle, fitness, and health changes,” Joel explained. One advantage of the GYMGUYZ mobile model is the ability to work outdoors. Many traditional gyms confine movement to machines, walls, and f looring, but the GYMGUYZ experience breaks beyond those boundaries. Joel noted that the team “really loves working out outdoors” and wants to reconnect people with natural movement. “We really want to bring it back outside,” he said. “And the business model really allowed us to do that.” This freedom creates opportunities for

clients to rediscover joy in movement through fresh air, sunlight, and varied terrain. While most people already know the basics of wellness, the true magic of GYMGUYZ lies in the creativity their trainers bring. “We get creative. We show them movements they haven’t done before,” Joel said. This creative approach not only prevents workouts from becoming mundane but also broadens a client’s sense of capability. When someone discovers they can do something they never imagined, momentum builds. For those who feel intimidated about starting a wellness journey, Joel offers reassurance rooted in compassion. “A lot of times people are not intimidated by the exercise or routine, but by what their idea of that is,” he said. Managing expectations is crucial. Trainers remind clients that the journey is theirs; they set the pace and define what feels comfortable. The trainer’s
role is to guide and encourage, not dictate. “We think movement is human,” Joel added, emphasizing that celebrating small victories is essential for long-term motivation. “The first small victory, and an often overlooked one, is actually signing up and making the commitment.” The first step in the GYMGUYZ process is a free, no-obligation assessment. A trainer visits the client’s home for an hour to discuss goals, lifestyle, medical considerations, and any physical limitations. This is followed by a body analysis, movement assessment, and fitness assessment. “This lets us understand where you are with fitness so we can fully customize and make it fun for you,” Joel said. “It’s up to you to decide whether you think you can do it on your own or if you want us to hold your hand for a bit or for a long time.” For those ready to build or rebuild a truly personalized wellness routine, visit gymguyz.com/southwest-atlanta or call 404-882-1106 to get started.

THE Incredible 37,000-SQUAREFOOT Opportunity United by baseball, two partners created a facility where dedication and big dreams take shape.
Partner, Walker Searcy, coaching one of his players.
ARTICLE BY PAM REID PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS COLLINS PHOTOGRAPHY
Most people probably don’t know that one of the first recorded baseball games took place in 1846, played on a dusty field in New Jersey with rules that would look almost unrecognizable today. Since then, the sport has grown from an amateur pastime to a science of swing paths, pitch tunnels, and data-driven development. Yet despite the rise of technology, baseball still demands something beautifully old-fashioned: time, effort, and thousands of quiet reps no one else sees. It remains a game that molds character as much as talent. Home Plate stands alone as a resource for would-be players. Founded in 2002, the local training facility is a cornerstone for players across Fayette and surrounding counties. What began as a modest 15,000-square-foot facility has grown into an awe-inspiring 37,000-square-foot complex that draws in athletes of all ages and skill levels. When Walker Searcy purchased Home Plate from its original owner in 2016, he knew he wanted to do more than just run a business; he wanted to build a community. In 2021, he partnered with Ryan Childs, who had once worked at Home Plate years earlier. Both men grew up in the immediate area and played baseball through high school and college. Their shared love for the game and their deep local roots have become the foundation of everything they do. “Baseball is just one of those things where if it’s in your blood, it’s in there, and you can’t shake it,” Ryan says. “It’s hard to step away from the game when you love it as much as we do.” That passion is evident in every corner of the facility. With 18 batting cages, 4 pitching lanes, a 6,500-square-foot weight room, a physical therapist, chiropractor, and training staff in the weight room, Home Plate offers players access to the kind of resources

once reserved for collegiate and professional athletes. Just 150 yards from the front door lies their state-of-the-art turf field, making the complex one of the best in Georgia. Ryan laughs, “If I had walked in here at 16, I might not have ever left.” Home Plate is more than equipment and space. It’s about mentorship, perseverance, and opportunity. “Walker and I do this to instill the love of the game and teach the game the way we were taught to play it,” Ryan explains. “Not just from a fundamental standpoint, but the whole approach to the game.” Walker adds, “It’s about passing it forward to the next generation.” CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . The partner’s “why” is deeply personal. Walker, who is a father, says, “I have kids, and I’d love for them to come through Home Plate one day.” Every year, they help hundreds of players map their path forward, from youth leagues to collegiate play. With HitTrax technology for batting and Rapsodo analytics for hitting and pitching, Home Plate provides real-time data that helps players fine-tune their mechanics. Every two to three years, the coaching team sits down to evaluate progress and adjust training plans. “It’s a place where you can come and grind it out,” Walker says. “Get what you train for.” Their results speak volumes. Out of all high school players nationwide, only about 7% go on to play in college. But since Walker took ownership, more than 400 Home Plate athletes have advanced to the next level. Beyond the metrics and milestones, both men emphasize character development. “Baseball is one of the biggest character-building sports there is,” Ryan reflects. “Every parent wants the best for their kid, but the hardest part is allowing them to fail because that’s how they truly get better.” For both Ryan and Walker, the success of Home Plate is about shaping good athletes and better people. They are quick to credit their families for supporting the dream. “We couldn’t do what we do without our wives,” Ryan says, referring to his wife Caitlin and Walker’s wife Amanda. Home Plate Baseball has grown into a place where commitment and opportunity meet - a space built intentionally for athletes who want to work hard, grow deeper, and chase something bigger right in their own backyard. Home Plate Baseball is located at 611 Highway 74 South in Peachtree City. Visit www.homeplate1.com or call 770-631-3044 for more information.

Values Is the most important key to living a full and healthy life hiding from you? There are many factors to consider when thinking about what constitutes health. The food we eat, exercise, environmental influences, our emotions, and our spiritual awareness are all pillars of health. However, there is one factor that tops the list which often goes unspoken; living in alignment with your value system. Defining values helps a person to structure their life based on personal belief systems by determining what is most meaningful and important to them. From there, a sense of purpose is derived and defined values become tenets from which to live. There are plentiful examples of values, and they vary from person to person. Some examples of values include family, humility, benevolence, leadership, kindness, independence, creativity, and adventure. Our emotions serve to guide us to understanding whether our actions are in alignment with our values. When we live incongruently with our value system, we are betraying ourselves and delivering a subconscious message that we do not matter. Emotions that can come from not living in accordance with our values are based in fear and include anxiety, depression, anger, resentment,

and jealousy. Living from a place of fear tends to foster bad habits such as addictive behavior, poor dietary choices, negative sleep habits, and unhealthy relationships. Physiologically, the natural flow of energy in the body becomes stuck, wreaking havoc in the body physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. From there, symptoms and illness ensue. However, when we love and respect ourselves enough, we will spend our time and energy according to our values and emotions where love becomes more prevalent. Those emotions include gratitude, joy, peace, comfort, connection, trust, and happiness. Living from love leads to a desire, willingness and commitment to engage in activities that fulfill our sense of purpose. By doing so, our body’s energy moves with ease. When our energy flows freely, we feel vital, healthy, purposeful, and joyful. Identifying our values becomes easier when we create space in our lives to understand what brings us meaning in life. Here are five steps to create space to aid in identifying your values:
5. Speak your values out loud
1. Grounding/Earthing I have experienced it myself and I hear so many others share a similar experience, that being in nature is healing. Getting our hands into the earth with gardening, walking along the beach, taking a hike, or even lying in the grass brings an almost indescribable sense of well-being. Connecting with the earth’s electrical charge is thought to aid in pain reduction, modulate the immune system, and reduce inflammation. It also can lead to feeling more centered, allowing us to focus on what is most important to us.
There are many benefits to literally speaking our truths and discussing our values out loud with a trusted confidant. Bouncing ideas and having meaningful discussions can help us determine our framework and organize our thinking. Sometimes friends and family may not provide the most objective perspectives and professional counseling or life coaching may be more appropriate, while at other times a friend or family member is the most perfect fit! When we live in alignment with our values, we are honoring ourselves in the most self-loving way. From there, our vibrancy shines to our loved ones, our neighbors and even strangers we see out and about. It becomes not only the best gift you can give yourself, but that of our community. So cheers to 2026, let’s make this the best year yet!
2. Meditation/prayer Setting your intentions in quiet solitude using meditation or prayer provides clarity. Meditation may seem overwhelming, but you can make it simple by not expecting perfection in the process. I suggest finding guided meditations online that grab your attention. Try various guided meditations until you find one that feels right.
3. Exercise In addition to the more obvious benefits of exercise, it temporarily unblocks stagnation thereby creating space for objectivity.
4. Journaling Getting thoughts on paper helps clarify intentions.
