Back in my single days, I had a fun little ritual with potential suitors: a series of unusual, sometimes revealing questions to see if they measured up. One of my favorites was, “What is the best gift you’ve ever received for Christmas as a child?”
Answers usually ranged from the classic new bicycle to the legendary Daisy Red Ryder carbine-action, 200-shot range model air rifle. (If you don't know what movie that's from, we can't be friends, LOL)

Now, with a few more years and life experiences under my belt, my answer has changed. The very best gift I could ever receive isn’t something wrapped in shiny paper or tied with a bow. It’s the love given to me by a tiny baby born over 2,000 years ago—Jesus. The One whose name is above all names. The gift of His presence, His sacrifice, His unending grace—this is a treasure that surpasses all others.
Truthfully, though, the holidays aren’t always bright and merry. For some, the season is full of loneliness, heartache, or memories that sting. Maybe a loved one is missing, a family gathering is stressful, or life’s challenges feel heavier than usual. In those moments, it’s easy to feel like the world has forgotten you. But here’s the truth that never changes—Jesus’ love is always there. His arms are open, His heart is full of compassion, and His gift of peace and hope is available for anyone who will take it.
This December, I hope we can all pause amid the twinkling lights and festive bustle to remember the true gift of Christmas: a Savior who came to live among us, to love us, and to make all things new. That gift is timeless, perfect, and meant for each of us—especially in the moments when life feels anything but perfect.
From my heart to yours, may your holiday season be full of wonder, joy, and the unmistakable peace that comes from knowing Him.
Merry Christmas, Fayette County.

Some businesses are born from necessity or trend. Others are born from talent. But the most memorable brands? They are born from meaning, woven with heart, heritage, and a calling to serve. JRee Designs is one of those rare gems.
Founded in 2018 by creative visionary Jameka Character, JRee Designs is a boutique holiday decorating and hosting consultancy known for transforming homes, events, and businesses into stunning seasonal experiences. For Jameka, beauty isn’t just visual, it’s emotional and meaningful. It’s about creating warmth, joy, and presence, one tree, one ribbon, and one thoughtful detail at a time.
Even the name carries love in its roots. A blend of her first name, her maiden name, Reese, and the affectionate nickname her husband Jason gave her in college - “JRee” - it represents family, legacy, and devotion. The Characters met in 1989 as students at the University of Georgia, reconnected years later, and have now been married for seven beautiful years. Together, they parent a blended family of five children who inspire creativity, tradition, and togetherness.
While many think of holiday designers as simply decorators, JRee Designs is far more. It is a creative custom design service and expert hosting consultancy devoted to elevating both the look and the feeling of a space.
Think:
• Holiday trees, garlands, staircases & mantels
• Large-scale ribbon artistry & ornament curation
• Seasonal décor for homes, corporate offices, and events
• Design planning, styling, installation, dismantling & storage support
• Custom wreaths, bows, and year-round tree themes
• Hosting coaching - modern hospitality etiquette and guest experience
Jameka teaches clients that hosting is an art. It is not about perfection. It’s about intention, warmth, and guiding the atmosphere. “People sometimes hear the word etiquette and think old-fashioned,” she says. “I focus on presence, planning, flow, and how to honor guests. Your space can look beautiful, but the environment should feel beautiful too.”

It’s thoughtful. It’s refined. It’s modern graciousness.
JRee Designs specializes in holiday installations that rival luxury magazines with lush ribbon work, layered texture, large ornament variation, and impeccably placed design elements.
“We build looks that feel special,” Jameka says. “Most people have beautiful items. They just don’t have enough scale, quantity, or the right blend. We enhance what clients have, curate what’s missing, and bring it all to life.”
The studio’s signature is year-round themed trees - Valentine’s, Easter, Fall, Baby Shower, Graduation, and even Travel Trees adorned with passport ornaments, tiny luggage tags, and charms from clients’ journeys. For many families, these trees become memory keepers and conversation pieces, a joyful visual diary of life lived fully.
“We want people to enjoy the seasons, not rush through them,” Jameka adds. “Celebration should be year-round.”
JRee Designs handles everything from shopping, transporting, installing, styling, dismantling, and packaging items for client storage. It is white-glove holiday service for clients who value beauty, ease, and excellence.
“Our ideal client wants a festive, polished look, but may not have the vision or time, and is willing to invest in convenience and a custom experience. We honor their style, their life, and create something that reflects them.”
Most repeat clients aren’t home during installations, which demonstrates the level of trust that’s been established, not only in Jameka but in her creations. These “loyalty clients” book months ahead, filling much of the November calendar. Expansion is underway to increase capacity for new clients.
Beyond elegance, there is purpose in Jameka’s work. One client family, grieving a recent loss, watched their home transform and later shared that the trees brought unexpected peace and uplifted their spirits. Another client’s daughter waits all year to see the new design; her excitement reminds Jameka why she loves this work.
“When I decorate, I become one with the tree,” she smiles. “It’s therapeutic. I turn on Christmas music no matter the season and pour love into every detail.”
This passion extends into the community. JRee Designs provides complimentary services to select local schools, surprises families in need, and partners with businesses and organizations. Recently, Jameka received the Joe Biden Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for dedicating more than 4,000 hours of service - a prestigious honor recognizing leaders strengthening communities nationwide. This distinction was awarded at the 2025 Mogul Awards.
Jameka is a creative, a woman of faith, a wife, mother, and servant leader. Her gift is creating spaces that feel like hugs. Spaces that breathe joy, magic, and memory.

How the Gaddy family turned a simple Christmas display into a Fayetteville tradition.
AND PHOTOGRAPHY

What began as a modest display on Sandy Creek Road, featuring a cheerful “Ho Ho Ho,” a gingerbread house, and a few elves, has since blossomed into a beloved Fayette County tradition. For nearly four decades, the Gaddy family has transformed their home into a dazzling winter wonderland that draws visitors from near and far, spreading warmth and nostalgia throughout the holiday season.
Mike and Gwen Gaddy both grew up in homes illuminated by Christmas lights each holiday season. When they had children of their own, they decided to carry that tradition forward in their own special way, blending childhood memories with a shared love of celebration.
In 1987, the Gaddys placed their first light display along the roadside, as their house sat too far back to be seen by passing cars. The following year, they added another display, and then another. Thirty-eight years later, the driveway winding through their seven-acre property becomes a breathtaking light exposition each December. Today, the Gaddy Christmas Lights Extravaganza features at least 40 displays and more than 200,000 lights, celebrating what many call “the most wonderful time of the year.”
Families who once drove through as children now return with kids of their own, continuing a legacy of shared joy, laughter, and
holiday spirit. The Gaddys always knew their light display had grown popular, but they didn’t realize the depth of its impact until a devastating day in August 2023.
Every year, the family begins setting up in August and doesn’t finish tearing down until mid-February. That summer, as all the displays were safely stored in their barn, a neighbor pulled into their driveway with alarming news: black smoke was billowing from the back of the property. Mike rushed outside to find the barn engulfed in flames. In moments, decades of decorations and many personal items were lost.
It was a heartbreaking experience, but one that revealed the extraordinary kindness of the community the Gaddys had brought together through their lights. When a woman they didn’t
know offered to create a GoFundMe, Gwen politely declined, saying they didn’t need money, just supplies. Word spread quickly, and soon, neighbors and strangers alike showed up with wire, lights, replacement decorations, and heartfelt encouragement.
With the community’s help, the Gaddys rebuilt the displays, determined to keep the tradition alive. That December, the Gaddy Christmas Lights Extravaganza shone brighter than ever before — a symbol of resilience, faith, and unity that touched every visitor who came through.
Among the hundreds of displays, Gwen’s favorite remains the gingerbread house from the very beginning. The same dolls and wooden frame still stand, lovingly repainted and repaired through the years. For her, it represents not just the start of the display, but the enduring spirit of family, faith, and community that has carried it forward.
To see the gingerbread house and experience the magic for yourself, visit 898 Sandy Creek Road in Fayetteville from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Thanksgiving night through December 30. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or returning for another season of sparkle, the Gaddy family’s Christmas Lights Extravaganza promises a glowing reminder of what the holidays are all about: joy, generosity, and togetherness.

AN
OPULENT HOLIDAY CLASSIC, RICH WITH CREAM, WARMTH, AND TIMELESS CHARM.
Classic Eggnog
There’s something magical about a glass of good old-fashioned eggnog. Long before store-bought cartons lined the shelves, families stirred this festive favorite by hand, warming the kitchen with the scent of nutmeg and tradition.
INGREDIENTS:
• 4 cups whole milk
• 5 whole cloves
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 12 egg yolks
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 2 1/2 cups bourbon (my choice) or light rum
• 4 cups light cream
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
Whether you sip it by a glowing tree, share it with friends, or save it for a quiet moment by the fire, this classic homemade eggnog brings the season to life in the most comforting way. Creamy, comforting, and classically elegant — the spirit of the season in a cup.
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Combine milk, cloves, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and cinnamon in a saucepan, and heat over medium-low for 5 minutes, slowly bringing the milk mixture to a boil.
2. In a large bowl, combine 12 egg yolks and 1 ½ cups sugar. Whisk together until it is fluffy. (You can use a mixer with the whisk attachment as well)
3. Temper the egg mixture by slowly whisking the hot milk mixture into the eggs. Pour the mixture into a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes, or until thick. Do NOT allow the mixture to boil.
4. When thick, strain the mixture to remove cloves, and let cool for about an hour.
5. Stir in bourbon or rum, cream, 2 teaspoons vanilla, and nutmeg. Refrigerate at least 8 hours before serving. Serves 12 thirsty guests.
“Creamy, comforting, and classically elegant — the spirit of the season in a cup.”
